    I think you have come a long way in art and design here. I can't quite judge your engineering because you are the professional, but compared to a lot of your past designs, visual wise, this one has turned out the best so far. Elegant and beautiful.

    • @rRhyan
      @rRhyan ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The most impressive aspects are the parts you added onto the original radio. You mixed and blended the style very well here, keeping both the classic look while adding a retro-futuristic touch to it

    • @CarterHurd
      @CarterHurd  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rRhyan Thank you!
      When the dual-screen PC video went viral I had to recognize "wow... video performance is super tied to how cool the thumbnail looks, I better up my aesthetic game" ... So I really tried to go all-out here. And I'm really happy with how it looks in my living room setup, fits in well and looks nice with my speakers and plants.
      As for the engineering: It's crap. Lol. Even worse airflow than the laptop was..... but it's just good enough to not throttle during gaming so I'll take it.

      @@CarterHurd Sometimes you win with the algorithm, sometimes you don't. I think because it looks so impractical/practical (yes both) it's easy to get people to click on to watch it. The title as well, "I used this as my PC for a month" is what a lot of popular channels are doing as well which seems to generate interest.
      I've enjoyed watching all your hacky projects not just that one though, so I think if people genuinely like the content they should hang around.
      Cool stuff you're doing, definitely inspiring me to buy a 3d printer and be more creative instead of just being a mindless consoomer.

    I've been searching high and low for inspiration for a build and set ups that don't look like an arcade (they're great, but there's a time and a place and it isn't any time I have my eyes open in my apartment). Loved the look of this. I'd love to check out that hoarding situation you stumbled upon.. sounds like a gold mine. Enjoying your vids, thanks!

    In 2014 I cut down the overall height of a floor standing 1939 Philco radio cabinet, and built a PC case out if it that would take a full ATX motherboard, as well as eight 3.5 inch hard drives. The motherboard is on a hinged door, similar to the old Blue and White Powermac G3 Apple made in the late 90s, early 2000s
    Last year, I began building a SFF PC case from the leftover parts from that old radio cabinet that I had cut out to reduce the original's size. I plan to design a front and rear grill pattern, and have it cut out of brass plate with a water jet, to serve as the front and rear grill. The SFF case also just barely fits a full ATX motherboard. The bottom I/O panel was taken from a 2u server chassis, and has a standard I/O shield cutout with seven _low profile_ PCIe slots. From the front, the case has kinda the shape of an UNO reverse symbol 🔃 with the I/O coming out the bottom, and the GPU air intake on top (a repurposed rectangular brass floor drain grill). The three slot GPU bracket and SFX PSU are mounted to the rear grill. The whole unit hinges open, with the motherboard on the swing down drawer, so when Open, the bottom I/O faces sideways, for easier access.
    Both cases were made from the same radio cabinet, and the original cabinet was completely gutted when I got it, including having no radio face. I found a set of brass postbox doors at an antiques shop. They had a mild art deco design that I liked, and the two larger ones perfectly covered the hole in the front of the radio cabinet. I mounted a nixie clock behind the glass windows that would normally hold a Postbox or room number. On the new SFF case build, I plan to have the case door release and a smaller nixie clock behind it.
    The 2014 case looks like a shorter version of the original 1939 Philco radio. There is a false back behind the speaker grill bars, which serves as dual air intakes. Each intake is a 2x2 grid of 120mm fans, for a total of 8 intake fans, blowing through a pair of 10x10 inch air filters. A pair of internal circulation fans makes sure air blows up into the top of the case, where the hard drives are, and the intakes feed directly into the PCIe slot area, and feed up to the CPU, which is cooled by a Noctua NH-14D. There are a pair of 120mm and one 140mm exhaust fans at the upper back of the case, near the CPU, to exhaust hot air. These fans are unrestricted, unlike the 8 intakes, which are pushing against filters.
    The 2021 case is made from leftover wood, and wont look so much like a radio, as much as just a period piece... The deign for the legs actually is stolen from a lamp. The half that is fixed will stand on buttressed legs mounted to the side. It will be supported at the front by a pair of buttressed legs forming an "A" shaped leg with the smaller brass postbox door in the "hole" of the "A". For stability, the rear grill will likely have a single small leg to support it's corner. The CPU of the small case is cooled by a Noctua NH-D15 mounted in a 90° orientation (blowing toward the PCIe slots). Since the case can only handle half height cards, this airflow direction will pull air in directly from the front grill, and pass It directly toward the SFX PSU and over the slots. The GPU is connected by a riser cable to it's bracket. Both CPU and GPU are able to pull in fresh cool air (from the front grill and top grill, respectively), and blow everything out the rear grill.

  • @Zdzisiek
    @Zdzisiek ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think this could be way better without cutting original box.
    On the left side where Motorola logo was with that cloth(speaker), you could just put new cloth that act as dustfilter with modern pc fan for intake (it will not be visible), and on the right side have fancy exhaust. This would create at least "some" air movement and could even work with more powerful parts.
