    I can't believe that I strongly prefer this over the original laptop. I figured I'd regret this whole thing... but it's more compact on a desk, I have better posture when using it due to the higher display position, the secondary display is useful, and the mechanical keyboard + mouse is much better than the laptop input devices.

      I like the concept as a substitute of an old electric typewriter, it resembles me a bit the Selectric II by IBM, it would be very interesting using the tob screen for writing with an inmersive softwar as IA writer while having the bottom screen for resourcing stuff. I use my iPad for that purpose but unfortunatelly I do not have a mechanicak keyboard paired with it and also don't have a secondary botton screen, so making reseaching while writting it is a pain on the ass. I also though on the dual display zen book... but the keyboard ergonomics seems not very conffortable.

    Looks like all the risks (potential hardware incompatibility issues, having to cut your ssd, etc) ended up paying off AWESOMELY. This build is the kind of tech tinkering that I dream about being able to complete if only I had better resources on hand. This looks like it took a team of guys tens of thousands of dollars worth of research and design iterations to end up with to show off at CES as a concept computer that would never be intended to release to the public, anyways…. but you made it yourself out of stuff you had on hand! That’s some Tony Stark stuff you did there! The aesthetic choices you made are profound. I love the typewriter shape so much, and once I saw how you gave it a discreet place to fit a second monitor I was blown away. The way it evokes a sheet of paper coming out of a futuristic typewriter and also being removable yet retaining that funky widescreen so as to keep it 100% functional, I honestly can’t get over how much I am obsessed with that it’s such a GENIUS idea, and how the hell hasn’t something like this been available already for people?! There’s always been a section of the market with people waiting in line to buy massively expensive yet utilitarian workstation desktops, or gaming laptops and PC’s directed towards the cutting edge esports crowd. This LOOKS luxury, but you made it at home like it was an experiment and a craft project for you! The big PC companies, and I don’t just mean the specialty manufacturers of cases and components, but HP, Dell, Lenovo and stuff, they all need to consider something like this as a potential brand new product line. We have desktops, laptops, all in ones, all with their own pros and cons, yet I’ve never seen a professional mechanical keyboard included in the first place, let alone as the centerpiece of an all in one gaming PC that also happens to have a perfect place to add a second screen. Tons of people are begging for something portable but powerful, even a little bit modular without seeming complicated and overwhelming novices. You’re a true artist, this should be shown off to the world on display somewhere. You’re reinvented PC’s in a way here by making a professional grade machine infused with approachability and user friendliness with that “it just works” Apple quality to it. It even looks like a direct descendent of the original 1998 bondi blue iMac, and that thing single handedly is responsible for Apple’s resurgence. If it weren’t for that machine there wouldn’t be an iPod, iPhone, etc, it would have set back consumer tech by years. I’m a big fan of cyberdeck projects and DIY stuff, but even the best ones usually come off looking impractical like a cheesy movie prop or like an expensive cosplay accessory, but yours remained first and foremost a computer to be used for long periods of time, to type on without dealing with flat little laptop keys, as well as to play games, or anything else you wanna throw at it. I see too many cyberdecks built into crazy waterproof suitcases or overflowing with chunky toggle switches and stuff, rarely seeming like a potential daily driver pc, but more like an art project that’s handy as a backup PC.
    Your 5 minute video of your DIY computer made me write all that. I NEVER write TH-cam comments. I only randomly found this video from Reddit, but instantly made me a huge fan and I subscribed and everything. I’m sure I’ll be showing this to people while fawning over it even more. I only wish I had any kind of useful industry connections or some kind of influence to help you in a meaningful way, it truly was revelatory.
    Like let’s not forget how you took a wild longshot chance and CUT YOUR STORAGE IN HALF WITH SCISSORS SUCCESSFULLY! What?! That kinda thing would never happen to anyone else, it’s like you’re operating on another level entirely. Can’t wait to see more in the future.

    The inconsistencies with moving your mouse between monitors is because of full screen VS borderless windowed mode. Full screen does not allow you to move the mouse out of the game(sometimes it glitches out though). Borderless allows you to move the mouse unless it's locked by the developers of the specific game. Full screen is usually preferred for games because of lower latency.

    • @raven4k998
      @raven4k998 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah well sadly it's not something they actually build these days why cause pay more attention to the dimensions it's way way to think for anything they build these days laptop pc markers sadly are into as thin as possible these days so something like that is not possible anymore even though it would likely sell like crazy

      @s.i.m.c.a 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      nice but unusable:
      - not portable like laptop
      - too weak as desktop pc
      - upgrade path - highly questionable
      -------
      - this is valid only as typewriter, who like the esthetics of old fashioned ones...which makes product kinda for a small niche ....

    • @awakenedcrowl
      @awakenedcrowl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@s.i.m.c.a Make the screen deatachable, Put it all in a fitting case, and it might not be AS portable as a laptop, but portable non the less. The power of such a device can also be upgraded quite significantly. If high power can be put into a thin af tablet, it can be put into a much thicker keyboard.
      The exact example we have in this video is not what a final product of such a concept would look like. This was made as a quick proof of concept for a video. If the big companies tried their hand on their own versions of this loose form factor, the results would obviously be MUCH more refined and usable.

    I've dreamed of a project like this for a while, thanks for doing the thing!
    Just a couple suggestions for a second effort:
    1. This thing should have a trackball on the right (assuming you're right handed)! Trackballs are awesome at saving space without sacrificing functionality. I'm sure one of those boutique ones built to be compact would do the job perfectly. Just need to make sure the ball stays removable so it can be cleaned. A trackpoint would of course also be a good solution but I think it would be way too hacky to make it work with your keyboard.
    2. Would be awesome if the top bracket accepted an eink display to get that digital typewriter goodness for writing.
    3. Would be nice to find a protective bag to keep the screen from being scuffed.

    The numbers of use cases of that. A good keyboard and a little screen, ideal for monitoring your twitch chat, discord without taking place on the desktop, always mails or google tasks quickly available.
    Not everyone can afford the place for more than one monitor but this, also pluging it to your TV for accessing medias or your personal home server (or plex) without using smart TV apps because sometimes codecs don't work so well.

  • @WarrenPostma

    So I really like this build, if it was mine, I would have gone with the 3d printed parts in a non translucent form factor and would have sanded and filled the irregularities, and then painted the exterior black, then dry brushed some gold/copper/silver on with some green, to create a verdigris/textured look of very old metal. I've always wanted to build a "500 years after the collapse, distressed cyberdeck" build. If I could it would actually have a lot of real copper and metal parts. The janky exposed parts look awesome, and I would have gone all in on that look. It should be solid, like it's survived and will continue to survive a while, but also look like it was heavily used. Perhaps I'd even spray bomb that keyboard just masking the keycaps.

    RE: The cursor moving between monitors on some games-
    I ran into this issue ages ago on my Windows machine running dual/triple displays, I ended up using this software called "Actual Multiple Monitors" to essentially lock the cursor to that display running the game, and it worked fantastically!
    I would suggest checking it out as it does have a bunch of useful stuff for dealing with the annoying quirks you sometimes get running multiple displays on Windows, and may have some use-cases for your crazy projects lol
