India celebrates a historic double gold victory at the Chess Olympiad as young prodigies rise in global rankings. Meanwhile, the world of international chess is reshaped by a 'Russia vs West' dynamic, as former champion Russia faces a ban due to its invasion of Ukraine. In episode 1523 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta unpacks these shifts as geopolitics continue to impact sports.

Also a very important point you missed, Gukesh is playing World Chess Championship, challenging the world chapion for 1v1 for the world's best title later this year. An achievement too big to miss.

    Dear Shekar sir,
This was a very disappointing and half baked report. About half of the report was on Russia and its history in Chess (I understand it’s your call of the topic distribution), but given the title, you should have had covered the upcoming Gukesh vs Ding WCC match, Indians at the candidates 2024 and India’s performance in the Chennai Olympiad to say the least.
I understand that you are not much familiar with the chess sport but as a journalist, this is where your lack of research is clearly evident. Maybe get in touch with actual chess journalists.

I was thrilled you chose to cover India's Chess Olympiad win, but I couldn’t help feeling disheartened by how the focus quickly shifted away from the victory-and chess itself.
The biggest takeaway for me is this: when was the last time India produced world-beating teenagers after Sachin Tendulkar? Now, we have two-Gukesh and Praggnanandhaa.
What’s more, Gukesh and Arjun, at just 18 and 21, are nearing the 2800 FIDE rating mark-a monumental feat, especially when you consider Vishy Anand’s peak was 2817. These young stars aren’t just the future of Indian chess; they’re already making history.
And let's not forget the Indian women’s team, who pulled off a miracle by punching way above their weight to secure a highly improbable gold. While the open team’s success was expected, given they were the strongest on paper, the women’s triumph was nothing short of extraordinary. They faced formidable opposition, yet delivered when it mattered most. I wish you had touched on these points as well.
