Not sure who invented it but the pieces names fit its Indian origins. King is King, instead of Queen we call it Minister, Rook is Elephant, Bishop is Camel, Knight is Horse and Pawn is Soldier. If you think about it these are very similar to the regiments used in ancient wars. So not sure if any countries used all these animals in wars back in the days. The game has been changed and modified with the time but hasn't been lost.
Also it doesn't make sense if a pawn (soldier) performs well he is promoted to a queen 😭, I mean wtf 👁️👄👁️, in Indian chess soldier becomes minister for performing well
I know the Minister could only move like a King and was very weak and also pawns have been changed around a ton (promotion, moving two squares, en passant) but did the other pieces work the same as they do now?
Early form of chess was developed in india...with 4 types of pieces..chaturangana..then it travelled to Persia to europe.. addition of new rules , addition of new pieces opening..was developed..fun fact :in indian chess (long time ago) instead of queen there was minister..in villages still today people call the piece mantri(minister) not queen..
In Parsia (iran) wazir (minister) is the word instead of queen..i think it was in itlay the minister was replaced by queen..if I am not wrong it was queen margarita..after her name there is margarita Pizza..

Chess originated in India during the ancient times and was called "Chaturanga" in Sanskrit. It was commonly played for sharper battle strategizing. From India it went to Persia and was called "Chatrang" there, obviously a slight modification of the original Sanskrit word. During Persia's Islamization and Arabic influence, "Chatrang" got corrupted to "Shatranj".
