The Queen's University Talk: The Rising Tide of Compelled Speech

  • I was invited to Queen's University March 5 to give the inaugural lecture/discussion of the Liberty Lecture series, funded by Faculty of Law alumnus, Gregory Piasetzki (LLB 1980).
Dr. Bruce Pardy (law.queensu.ca...) and I discussed the increasingly frequent requirements for compelled speech that characterize the Canadian sociopolitical landscape.
The entire event was, in a word, surreal. Initial controversy over its acceptability rose to the point where the Dean of the Law School William Flanagan and Principal of Queen’s Daniel Woolf wrote missives in defence of free speech (the former: bit.ly/2EQJDm3; the latter: bit.ly/2tJB8VB). The Queen's University "Human Rights Office" posted a link to the Levana Gender Advocacy Centre and Education on Queer Issues Project "active support" efforts during this event at their “Trans-Positive and People of Colour Positive Chill-In” in Dunning Hall, room 11, where there was coloring pages, music, food, and discussion.
The 900 or so people who attended (who comported themselves admirably and thoughtfully throughout) were subject to a continual 90-minute barrage of noise generated by the protestors, who leaped up on the stained glass windows lining the hall and banged continually on them, breaking one. Inside, we could see shadowy figures dimly outlined through the colored glass. The outside doors were barricaded. One protestor was caught on film saying "Lock them in and burn it down." The din was substantial and ominous, although it is much attenuated in this video, due to the nature of the microphones used, which were designed to pick up speech close at hand.
The protestor who broke the window was arrested, but not before she bit a policeman, attempted to kick the back window out of a police cruiser, and was found to be in possession of a garrotte, a particularly brutal weapon with no defensive utility whatsoever (bit.ly/2HoTDAu). The man who cursed so profoundly and eloquently near the beginning of the lecture accosted me and my crew after the talk, and yelled and cursed and threatened at close quarters during our 200-yard walk from the venue to the parkade.
No one who was at this event will forget it.
Not good. Not good at all.

Others are watching - and many need inspiration, example, encouragement and hands-on real help. When I'm in the fight with another disabled and their family, I forget about my limitations because I'm too damned focused on what's at the top of that mountain. A pleasure to go to a source where honor, duty, integrity, guts, and ingenuity still mean something.

This is so intense. I felt like I was watching a horror or suspense movie. Or 1984. The quiet, pensive, attentive audience sitting peacefully in the pews of this beautiful old building (church?) while the wisdom of JBP echoes through the rafters. Then suddenly, like drums in the deep, a knocking and banging slowly builds and builds and yet no one budges inside. Their determined stares fixed on the sound of reason in the room. Their yearning for truth not wavered by the possible doom outside. Shadows fill the stained glass windows and blurred figures move into view and eclipse the beauty of the ancient glass panes, as the hammering increases. The similarities of the protesters to “barbarians at the gate” or the “subdue the free thinkers” as in 1984, Equilibrium, or that Mac computer ad, or even metaphor of mindless zombies banging on the door is filled with irony as they shout “lock them in, burn it down.” This is a lecture that should be shown in schools to educate future generations. Indescribably important and metaphorical. Amazing job everyone inside. Clean your room. Speak the Truth. Slay the Dragon. Save your Father. Bring home the Treasure. ❤️

Well said. The building is Grant Hall - named after Principle George Monro Grant (A preacher and political advocate for Canadian unity in the latter half of the 19th century). The building is where Queen's has its convocation - and some exams. During WW1 it was a military hospital. It's a historic building, and it's a shame the stained glass window was broken.

Campus security was outside blocking the front doors, along with a couple of officers (at some point). Why the police didn't do anything when people started banging on the side windows, I'm not entirely sure about, maybe they didn't even know it was happening, considering the mob out front. Fascinating- on the inside of the building is a man with a beautiful mind- gently, kindly teaching what he believes is the best for society as a whole. After years and years of experience and study he humbly comes, admitting he doesn't have all the answers but willing to share what he has learned after a lifetime of study.....on the outside of the building is a mob.... who are mostly young, with little to no experience- little education and shockingly -some aren''t even sure of their own identity... and yet in spite of this they are out to silence one of the great minds of our time. Inside the building is inspiration and enlightenment - outside is an angry mob stirred into a frenzy... banging windows piling up garbage cans and chanting .... because they are barbarians who have no better way to communicate.... keep up the good work Jordan.... i wish i could have been there to hear you speak.

When I started watching Jordan Peterson over 2 years ago I knew he was thought provoking, and wise, but never thought I'd consider him a goddamn CIVIL RIGHTS LEADER until I seen this video right here. I've heard many talk about what's happening on campus, even seen some videos. But this, how does this not look the damn apocalypse outside those walls. Those kids in there are as strong as the speakers. I'm a liberal by the old standards, and a black man who very well knows where this type of fervor can lead. It's uneasy for me to watch, I hope these kids come to there sense soon. The strength of everyone in that room is inspiring.

What many young people today completely fail to connect (but which I'm sure a person of Dr. Peterson's age can well remember) is that these very same stupid interrupting strategies were being used in the 1960s and 70s against anyone who "the Resistance" disagreed with. If you need any proof, just YT "Richard Nixon at Oxford Union" for the very same disgraceful interruption strategies being employed a generation or more ago...nothing new under the sun, it seems!

Junk Science: good observations, but just because they "completely fail to connect" today, our young people will grow older and wiser, and the appalling behavior of the radical leftists shown and recorded in this video will stay with them for many years, as will the courageous and gallant focus and commitment of Dr. Peterson as he - and the others present at this remarkable event - carried on against the caterwauling of the anti-intellectual mob.
Dr. Peterson's performance, and willingness to stand and continue against the opponents of free speech and free thought, show that he is and remains a fine teacher. What a lesson he taught those in attendance at this event.

I'm glad that Queen's University did not cave in to pressure and cancel the event. Unfortunately other universities have tried to appease the mob by preventing 'controversial' speakers from appearing at scheduled events.
Maybe that is why so-called 'liberal intolerance' is growing today. Because the universities are afraid to stand up for their ideals against the mob.

What I find the most disturbing is how these misbehaving juveniles cannot understand that they are practicing severe fascism.

I know people usually say that the people who listen to Dr. Peterson are young, white men but just by looking at the crowd here, I see quite a diverse audience. So again, this video completely dismantles the argument that ONLY young, white men follow Dr. Peterson. And this is coming from a young, Asian woman who has followed Dr. Peterson since 2016 :)

I think that is because his views are, at this very moment in time, really speaking to people in that group the most. but that doesn't mean that it doesn't speak to other types of people aswell, maybe not as strongly but nevertheless it does.
that white male audience assumption is also brought into focus by the fact that he fights against the so called SJW movement, which is known to state that white males should shut up and stand back, that's one of their core ideologies, that while males and their ideas should be ignored in favor of every other group.
that's why I think that this idea exists, that he only has white male followers. and that also just shows once again that these people are bigots and they don't even realise it, or they have a very twisted definition of that term.
they group up people and act like all of the people in a group are the same. a disgusting thought but in their twisted minds it is just and caring.
they think all transgender people are the same and are baffled by the thought of some of them supporting Peterson's ideas... I bet they would be shocked that you, an Asian woman does too, because to them all asian women are one group, and as a group you should resent his views.
back in the day we called that racism or bigotry, now they redefined these words so they don't fall under these terms, when in reality they do. and then they tried to force the public to accept their new definition of these words so they can be the good guy

I have checked him out on TH-cam and while previously I would have to admit that I would not have approved of his views and opinions I now find that I do. I just watched enough of this video - so far - to be totally embarrassed that Queen's University, in my home town, allowed this guest of theirs to be harassed to such an extent, and so persistently throughout the evening. As Dr Peterson said to this effect, "How disrespectful to attack an event that so many people put so much work and effort into; appalling." Total understatement of course, but as simple as that. How on earth did Queen's not know that this would happen. The MC actually mentioned the security staff as having put so much effort into the event. I'm sorry, but they should be sacked forthwith. Even after the protests began - and I've only watched a short snippet - there was no sign of security to any effect - imagine - in Belfast a shortage of effective security!!
I sincerely hope that no one I know even remotely took part in such a shameful attack. I can only imagine that the attackers are so afraid of those they disagree with that they simply have to descend into childish tantrums with their hands over their ears repeating, "No! Don't say that! No! Don't say that, it's not true, it can't be true! And if it is true I won't be able to handle it!"
I feel like I should say a lot more but words fail me as to the logic or the purpose.
PS - I take my hat off to the trans person in these comments who was courageous enough to say that Jordan Peterson was reasonable in his presentation - thank you - that's how we get things done! There is hope.

We’ve all probably been there. It’s how we were indoctrinated. Btw I think you’re in for a rude awakening in the real world. Every Top 2000 corporation in North America have a diversity departments that actively seek to hire people that are not white males (the pure definition of legal racism) and diversity purchasing departments (meaning they actively buy and support black, minority, LGBT companies first and receive bigger bonuses for doing so). In addition if you work at any company you will go through sexual harassment training which sounds forthright in its theory but when you get into it you will find that going to lunch with 2 male friends is sexual harassment and sexism because you didn’t invite a female colleague....and you may have discussed something at lunch work related that excluded her, or a gay person, effectively instilling your white male privildge. In addition you will be given sensitivity training, explaining to you that it literally doesn’t matter what you say, someone has the right to be offended by it and you will face repurcussions for it if they raise a complaint to HR.
Be smart you’re in for a massive ride my friend.

So it's either black or its white, there's no chance that he's discussing something in the middle somewhere. And if it triggers their emotions or challenges their virtue signalling, then it's automatically evil!! That's the logical fallacy of radical leftism in a nutshell, they judge the truthfulness of something by their initial emotional reaction to it. So they're a SLAVE to their emotions, they won't even investigate whether something is true or not or what shade of grey it might be, pitiful way to live really.

You cannot really dictate my reaction to whatever he said. I may find it funny, or serious, it is my discretion. I'm not really explaining what he said, just stating my reaction to this very particular quote.
Btw, when he said that there's nothing funny about it, I think he is stating about the act of the groups, not on the quote stated above. I for one, don't find the disturbance funny; I find it very annoying and for a progressive and rich country, I find this act a bit ironic.

Doing a presentation, especially one drawing so heavily on scholarly endeavors is difficult. You have to know your material really well, which entails remembering the most relevant material that the presentation or conversation calls for, be able to choose from among the many that your mind offers up, and last be able to present it in the right words for your audience. So you need to remember, choose, present. So, he is doing it over and over throughout any given talk like a hundred times! I have the utmost greatest appreciation and thus respect for Dr. Peterson.

I'm a American Conservative who has had to put up with two years of Trumpism hijacking the Right, as well as people on the left who act just like them. It's a breath of fresh air to see someone come to the realization that they've been "caught in an ideology without actually realising it".
Both tribes need to realize that's where they are, too. If we can't examine our own worldview how can we adequately defend it? And if all we can do when someone disagrees is attack them, how can we move forward? Trying to destroy members of your own society because you can't win them over-- that just leads to fascism. Doesn't matter whether that takes the form of Naziism or Socialism, it's still a disaster.

I came to a realization upon watching this video, it hit me about half-way through, and I'd love to hear other thoughts on this. Seeing these kids screaming and going on outside the door made me reflect on my own university experience, as I am currently finishing up my last semester of undergrad (social sciences too). Here are my thoughts. It's not these kids that we should be alarmed and appalled at; they are young, impressionable, and despite what they're being told, they are immature KIDS. That's all it comes down to.
What I AM concerned about is the professors that are fueling this kind of behavior and cognitive dissonance that has been portrayed drastically more over the past few years, but seems to only be getting worse. These oh so wise and intellectual professors have a responsibility that they are failing dismally at. Dr. Peterson has talked at length about this.
Our focus needs to be exactly what Peterson's most primal message is: dismantle these ultra-postmodern, out-of-touch, and seemingly hate-filled ideologies that are being spoonfed to young absorbent minds by professors who are abusing their positions of power.
This raises two sinister questions: are these professors aware of the hypocritical, deviant, and ultimately destructive elements that are contained in their messages, or are they completely oblivious and naive? Both are equally terrifying.

I think the responsibilities lie on many levels:
      1. The school administration that doesn't enforce the schools rules, and doesn't punish this type of behavior. If you have people that are used to ignoring rules and getting always with it, you are only breeding criminals.
2.The professors who pass on their ideas to their students, a university professor is not a "teacher" in the full extent of the word, but more a "mentor", the transition is when you stop being told what to bring to class in order to be able to follow, to when you are suggested what might be useful with no real obligation.
3.The parenting, I would argue that these kids lack a father figure in their lives. Male parents are (usually) the first law enforcers, those that teach children to respect authority and not display some sort of behaviors in public. If you reach the age of young adult and are behaving like an infant, throwing tantrums and breaking property (whether it is yours or not), it is quite telling of your upbringing.
