    In my opinion, the problem with confidence as a game developer is this: you got a great game idea and start developing. But at some point you need to make compromises, you got not enough time for this or that, or your drawing skills are not good enough or you can't find the right music for your game and so on. And slowly during development, the actual game drifts away from your idea of how it should be. And in the end, you got a finished game but it's not the idea you first had of it. At least this is my problem with every game I have made.

      I think it was the dev of Moonquest who said: You never get to finish a game, the person that you were was obliterated by the process.

    • @CraftyMaelyss
      @CraftyMaelyss 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This very reason is why my first game is in it's 5th year of development, because I've started to learn how to do these things myself, through trial and error. Then you start to feel incredibly bad, due to how long it's taken to develop your game too, especially if you have a team.

    • @vaishnav_mallya
      @vaishnav_mallya 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. If you are working on a game them you should work on it often and not once or twice in a month. For me, other things get into the way and it breaks the continuity. I have done so much starting projects for RPG and platformer games but I never progressed beyond simple levels. I get demotivated too easily. :(

    • @CraftyMaelyss
      @CraftyMaelyss 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vaishnav_mallya I had that problem with my game for a long time too, but it helps to write your ideas and goals for the game down, then finding the joy for yourself to create the game, rather than worry about what others will think.
      It sounds a bit weird but honestly, this has helped me a huge amount and it will help you too :)

    • @vaishnav_mallya
      @vaishnav_mallya 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CraftyMaelyss yes, finding time between hectic college schedule is difficult. But my bachelor's course is finishing within the end of next month. Hopefully, I can jump in and go make something after that.
      I write down and mostly just make mental notes of my idea. Most ideas are just based of things I repeatedly keep seeing. Like any concept art or game showcase or even day to day objects makes me think that it could be a weapon or a vehicle or something so I get reminded of idea when I see those things.
      The ideas are important and all but the motivation to execute it is important too. Sadly mine breaks down so fast. :(

    You shouldn't worry about your first game, nor the second or third. They should be small and simple projects. Don't implement new ideas while you're developing. Write them down in great detail. Finish your simple project. Start A new small project, use your new ideas. Write down the idea you get from that, etc...
    Start getting serious around your 4th or 5th game. By then, you'll be faster at coding, animating, and developing. Now you have 3 games you can choose what ya like or dislike. You have feedback from People of what they liked and disliked. So you have the knowledge and experience to make A bigger game (go medium) and just keep stepping stones.
    But does this mean that it's not ok to jump out the gates with a 1yr+ starter game? I'm not saying that at all. Game Dev is about freedom, specifically creative freedom.
    But starting out, you will run into bugs and some will be apocalyptic to your game. You'll find yourself recoding everything in huge projects. You'll be way less likely to complete it if you encounter this type of event. So plan to build games within 3 months. Try to finish in less. If you find yourself at the 2 month mark, start making cuts to meet your deadline. Remove the pressure from yourself. You can always update later. Just remember, it's all about finishing and publishing. After 3-4 games, you'll know what you can handle.
    Just my 2 cents.

    Wow! Never heard of you Thomas. YT gave me a RECOMMENDED FOR YOU suggestion and then I found out about your game PINSTRIPE. I just could not believe how good it is! Then I tried to find how successful your game was. Although you say in your video it is going ok, It is probably one of the most underrated games ever. For me it is a work of art, a master piece. Really!!!. Your design, graphic art, the game mechanics, story, every single thing is absolutely flawless, beautiful and engaging. Congratulations from a point-and-click genre lover since Grim Fandango and Monkey Island came out (back in the day). Keep it like this Thomas. You will do even greater things in your life! Wish you the best.

    Heyy, I'm a game dev too and I can give only my point of view and experience. You will never have enough confidence haha. The more you question your game, the worst you will feel about it thinking that it's not enough. Attach yourself to your idea and release it and you will have bad and good feedback and you will learn about of your experience. But you will never understand what will happen to your game if you don't release it never. You cannot be enough confident because you will never know what will happen. It generates a lot of stress, I agree, but the worst that can happen is you never release it and you die without knowing if it was good or not, and blaming yourself. I made a puzzle RPG for a game jam and I was very proud of it, and at the end of the day the game wasn't the best for a Jam. But I learned about it because I did it, there's no other way. If you want to release small casual games, do it because you want to improve, generate material, make a portfolio, have a hobbie or just practice. Or all at the same time. But let you dream big! You can do it! Love your game and don't worry about other people! Just do it!
    EDIT: And the same applies for everything in life. You will never know what will happen, but you live, learn and adapt to your situations. Right? Cheers!

    On a slightly unrelated note, I've completely gone off the giant game reviewers, like IGN, GameSpot, etc., at least as a consumer, because I never know who is reviewing these things! There are so many different reviewers and employees, they're all so inconsistent, and as cynical as it may sound, most of them seem paid off, with the yearly Call Of Duty games getting 9/10's, while smaller, actually quite fantastic indie games get 5/10's, or lower.

    @Thomas Brush all in all, it is all true what you say. But it is all easy for you to say.. You finish the video with "I just got a thicker skin", but you have the confidence of finished successful games and you got the enough money in the pocket and constant cash flow every month, so if your just released last game fails, you can lean back and start working on the next project.
