This game is amazing and a true masterpiece just like disciples 1... It really sucks that its successors abandoned the familiar battle mechanic and playstyle. I hope there is a disciples 5 some day which is juar disciples 2 but better, made by strategy first since they clearly love this game
I don’t know if you are young enough to play it at release. If so you would know it’s not classic, it’s timeless! You have to live it to know how out of this world this game was back then. I am lucky to be there, it was a blast that last a life time!
This game is so famous in our country(Russia), our community is making mods that changes the balance, both main storyline, and PvP. And even adding some new units, which is even not breaking the game. For now, our famous mod is... Under translation it's called - Norvezhskaya Semga "norwegian salmon". Which is updated recently to version of 1.44. But again, i don't think if you find this mod, it will be in English, just letting you know, cuz personally i dunno myself. Even now, Russian players still plays this game even today. Truly legendary game...
Thanks for the info, really good to know. There seems to be a theme with certain strategy/tactical franchises to do really well in ex-Iron Curtain countries ;) Thanks for watching!
Been playing this game since it's release, I reinstall every once in a while. I just wish it had more scenario maps and that it were easier to mod. Editing units is notoriously difficult. Oveall a great game, very atmospheric and with a relatively complex meta-gameplay.
Usually later in the campaigns, your hero is powerful enough to take on the guardians. Buff them with potions and a few spells and try to get the health stealing artifact. Also poison or frostbite works great
@@StefaNonsense Empire + Elves - Two Healers + All the armor you can stack Demons - Incubus with hit % buffs ( ROE you can use Overlords and blister instead ) Undead - Locked Tier 2 Ghost with hit % buffs ( 70% single target is better than the 50% multi target ) Dwarfs - Sons Of Ymir with Armor buffs ( Frostbite will kill , your other party members might die unless you use alot of limited potions )

Disciples II RotE was the very first video game I played. About 20 years ago. I have been loving it since and no other game has ever taken its place. I am looking into learning how to mod it, or at least master the Scenario Editor.
Must've been quite the introduction to video gaming :)) Glad you found the video, look around my backlog, might find some other things you have memories of ;)
To mod it, you need the editor for the excel-alike files and the info about every code for units. You could even make new units based on the base models, like a boss type titan.
I had it for about 5 years but till recently I didn't give it a proper chance and it is so addictive... I even bought a new copy of Sacred Lands this December cause I couldn't resist trying it.
Combat also actually got one important update, between SL and D2. Ability to pass action. At times you may not want to kill the last enemy, so you could use that time to heal up your units, in D1 it wasn't possible to pass. There's option to have all enemy teams bear a flag, so it's easier to spot them on map, as well as command Ctrl or Shift, which gives you safe path around encounters. Gaurdians can be defeated, you can use shades or medusas to paralyze them, but you have to boost their stats enough for them to survive, don't think you can actually raise initiative high enough. It still takes a lot of time. It is also possible to outheal them. You have a limited number of turns to kill them too, before you're auto retreated from battle. You can still reenter the city, and guardian will have less HP. Anyway glad you've covered this considering it's one of my favorite games of all times, and I do believe it still holds pretty well
Wrong. DSL has Pass command that just skips the turn, as well as Retreat and Surrender. Surrender is the option which is non-existent in D2 and it instantly destroyed the party with no XP reward for the enemy. As for Pass, D2 replaced it with Defend and Wait, which are just more advanced versions thereof: one passes with a special status that decreases all direct damage received by half, and the other is just putting the unit at the end of initiative scale at the current round, saving the action.
masterpiece, I grew up with Disciples 2, later tried 1 and loved it likewise. I prefered it to HOMM games Loved the dark atmosphere, gothic fantasy world, amazing art , unit design, it was fun to play as well, upgrading your units and getting stronger
The difference as to which series one prefers - HOMM or Disciples - seems to generally come down to which one you started with. It's not a universal thing, of course, but it is general :) Thanks for watching!
@@StefaNonsenseI'd probably still lean towards Disciples as I'm highly visually oriented and they provide me that amazing world of dark gothic fantasy. Combat wise, I really enjoy playing disciples, its simple addictive fights, animations, leveling, but I'd say HOMM had made better system for army battles
Great video :) This is one of those games I see in a lot of places but haven't got a chance to play it. It looks pretty neat and I do like the look of it. I also haven't really played the Heroes of Might and Magic games but I did play a bit of Kings Bounty. I tend to really suck at these games lol. Looking forward to more of this series!
Nice review. Disciples 2 was a good game in every aspect. The only bad things were the imbalanced units of the undead (death unit) and the simple AI (Heroes 3 AI is a lot better, but Heroes 4 AI is awful). A remaster or remake could be so good, and some fights were long and epic.
Liberation stands nowhere near Disciples 2. It is a pile of mediocre marketing poop. It didn't preserve setting and its consistency (e.g. Empire - Highfather - air magic, lightnings, healing, Legions - demons - fire, curses) - it had generic fantasy feel, it had mediocre story and especially writing, blank characters, cliches, RPG part was very weak, gameplay was really-really boring. The game was aimed as pure business and incorporated safe and boring marketing ideas: console support, sex thematic promising, 80 hours of gameplay promise. The only good part about it was visuals and that's it. D2 is definitely a classic. It has its distinct features and has big and dedicated community in Russia, Poland and Eastern Europe in general. It is still played today with tournaments, modding (Dwarven Kingdom, Siomga mode), tools (RMG) and loved and respected much here.
Love the art style of Disciples 3 but it is inferior gameplay-wise to 2. Picked 2 up for about $1 and installed the GL Wrapper and it runs nicely on Windows 11.
Some people never got into HOMM because they started with Disciples, just like I never got around to playing Disciples because I was introduced to HOMM2 first :)
I never tried these games because they don't have unit movement like Heroes and Age of Wonders. The idea of Japanese style menu based combat turns me off so bad.
Correction: At 11:13 it's supposed to be Disciples: Liberation, not Legacy. My bad!
20 years later i still play this game. I think its definitely something special.

@@mauro.go177 thank you! I will look into this
I hate that this one didn't get a remastered version and that the next installations like DS3 and Lib went a HoMM path instead of the DS 2 path

Disciples is based of Ogre Battle games, but without in-combat spellcasting.

Hy! What mod are you using for faster movement and faster fights(beside the basic settings changes) ?
No mod for speed, besides the game's settings. It’s possible I sped up some clips while editing, so it’s likely "movie magik" 🙂
I cannot find Disciples: Legacy, is there a link to check it out somewhere?
Hey there! I misspoke it's Disciples: Liberation. Sorry for the confusion.

Depends if you attack or the enemy attacks you, if they attack you, you can see their faces.

I don’t have any other comment from you, not even in the "held for review" section, so I think YT just didn’t save it at all :))
Heroes of night and magic is better but this good also 👍

Disciples is better than HOMM, well - Until Disciples III.
There are 7 Homm games. Wouldn't say all of them are better.

Different strokes!
The game is the Ogre Battle clone, not the HoMM clone. HoMM fans dislike it. Japanese recently made Unicorn Overlord, which is similar to Disciples.
