  • HTTYD, a film series where viking boy Hiccup trains a dragon named Toothless. It will make your heart race with excitement, fill you with emotion, and most of all... make you wish you had a dragon that acted like a cat.
Here are some funny, interesting, and relatable reviews of the films from the site Letterboxd. (Some reviews have been trimmed for length.)
Thanks for watching this video! I appreciate it a lot, and I hope I entertained you a bit :)

Here's your friendly reminder that Toothless' face is based off Stitch (as well as Toothless' personality being partially inspired by him). Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, who co-directed Lilo & Stitch, also worked together on the first How to Train Your Dragon movie. Chris Sanders has also consistently been the voice of Stitch since then, from Kingdom Hearts II to the Lilo & Stitch TV series.

I remember my HTTYD phase... I shipped Hiccup and Astrid like there was no tomorrow, I simped for Hiccup like every other preteen girl did when they watched these movies, and I begged my parents to buy me every single Toothless plushie I saw. Needless to say, they did not buy me ANY of those Toothless plushies. And I forgot to mention how much I just wanted to BE Astrid, like that girl was everything I aspired to. She seemed so cool to me and the way she was able to be intimidating but still have Hiccup acting like the sweetest dork to her was just so impressive. The best thing about that phase was getting to bond with my brother over our shared love for trained dragons and shipping fictional teenage Vikings.
The only question I still have is this: if Astrid is supposed to be strong enough to jump around while swinging that huge axe, why are her arms so goshdarn skinny?? My girl deserves more muscle, DreamWorks.

I remember when my Dad and I were going to see the third HTTYD in theaters, I bet my Dad $5 that if Toothless and the Light Fury were going to have baby dragons at the end of the film that they would be black and white hybrids, while my Dad thought that the film would follow the same trope that Lady and the Tramp, Treasure Planet and Kiki’s Delivery Service had, in which there would be three female offspring and one male (oddly specific, but okay Dad). I convinced him that I would be correct because I was currently learning about genetics and Punnett squares in my high school AP Biology class, but he told me that was too scientific for a fantasy film with dragons.
When the black and white baby dragons appeared at the end of the film, my Dad sighed, handed me $5 from his pocket, and muttered “You win”.

I've seen everything except Nine Realms. The short films have some interesting world building of varying quality which is fun but not super necessary to see but I do strongly recommend Gift of the Nightfury because it does actually have a good coherent plot and is a sweet Christmas special. Of the TV shows both are fun, Race to the Edge is definitely better both in animation quality and plot complexity but it includes characters and plot points that were introduced in Defenders of Berk so you kinda need to watch all of it for context because they're really two halfs of the same show. It fills in what happened during the time skip between movies 1 and 2 and gives tons more information and world building on the dragons.

Thank you Tonka Joey and letterboxd reviews for giving me the motivation to watch the series, I’ve been wanting to do so for years
(Don’t ask me why it took me this long)
Update 12/4/22 (Outside of the stuff where I talk about the stuff I liked about the movie, my feelings towards the movie have kind of changed. Scroll down this comment if you wanna hear my current thoughts) Just finished watching the first one. It was great and I wish I watched it sooner. Interesting world, a well developed bond between the main duo, gorgeous flight scenes, interesting conflicts, great protagonists and a satisfying climax and ending. The scenes where Hiccup, Astrid and those other 3 kids ran around in the maze fighting random dragons was pretty boring (and I found those 3 random people annoying. I say 3 because I grew to like Astrid as the movie went on) but other than that this movie was really good. I can’t wait to watch the other two (Hopefully there’s less of them side peeps in the other 2 movies). Scroll down for my current thoughts on the movie
Update 1/21/23: Looking back at it now, my feelings on HTTYD 1 have soured (Plz don’t hurt me ). It’s a good movie, and there’s a lot of stuff I like about it, such as the growing friendship between Hiccup and Toothless, Hiccup’s conflict with Stoik, the flight scenes, and the story and worldbuilding. But what really holds this movie back from amazing for me is the pacing. The first 20 minutes or so are tightly written and there’s a sense of story progression throughout them (Same goes for the third act), but once the training day stuff arrives, the movie starts becoming extremely slow, and for the most part, stays like that until the 1 hour mark. As I’ve said before I found the training day stuff extremely boring, and the random kids who’s names I forgot, to be pretty annoying, and it felt like the second act didn’t focus enough on the actually interesting parts of the movie or the main plot and conflicts, the latter feeling kind of rushed at times as a result. I’m sorry guys, I like this movie I really do and I wanted to love it as much as everyone else does. I really hope the 2nd and 3rd movies are better

Although I'm not able to watch the final movie of httyd, the others I've loved so much and if I were to have any dragon. I would have what ever hiccups mom has, it's awesome as hell. Also if I were to ever die, I would ghost my way to someone's house, and turn on the movie.

OMFG. I remember being absolutely OBSESSSED. Like REALLY obsessed. In fact httyd 2 was my first movie to see in a cinema. After that. I was a FANGIRL. I remember making my parents drive to the mall to find a toothless plush, then on my 8th birthday I got it. I still have him today! and I also had a little toothless toy, and played the online rpg. I adored the animated series. Anything hyttd I LOVED. Man I miss the franchise. :')
    BTW nine realms is SHIT.

To answer the toothless vs shrek dragon question, my answer is toothless all the way. While dragon may be larger, toothless is much much faster both in sky and on land, plus the fact his fire breath is better (being both quicker, able to be fired in quick succession and hitting like bullets). Additionally, toothless has faced off against dragons of much grander sizes and with much greater destructive potential and came out victorious

I appreciate that you included some of the holiday specials and mini movies or whatever you want to call them.
But yeah, How to Train Your Dragon is my favorite movie trilogy of all time so this was a great video to watch 😊
If you don’t mind me making suggestions for another one of these types of videos, can you do a video for the Lego Movies, SpongeBob Movies, and TMNT movies?

    1. Great video 👍🏻
    2. You should also do the TV shows
Also I love How to train your dragon ❤️
But, unpopular opinion; I don’t like the third film (specifically the ending) and I also don’t like anything that takes place past the third film as a result I don’t consider them Canon
