Now I never finished this LN/WN that I was reading... but literally the anime stops as it fully takes off into crazy lore land.
Without details I can say that the fill in of the years between vampling child just getting outa her town to the version of "current" battle freak vamp badass is amazing and learning the history of our oni-chan is even more brilliant as it is 210% clear that the character dynamic of Spider-chan and friends is god tier.
Not to even mention that this endless stream of ever deepening mystery just repeatedly blows your mind.
S1=the side of the visible part of the Iceberg you can look at... there are literally too many twists and plot routes that I can't spoil you since everything I currently know could in fact be false and I would not know.
There is no series equal to this one depth wise and I will fight people on that. No exaggeration or gas lighting. Cold hard fact.

I absolutely love those scenes where we get to see her from someone else's pov, n remember/realise she only looks cute to herself. To everyone else, she's still a bloody terrifying spider monster.

It's especially hilarious when she's acting really weird. Like when she was rolling over and over out of envy at Sophia being born as a vampire with attractive rich loving parents and a ton of skill points, while she was born as a frankly hideous spider monster surrounded by cannibalistic siblings and a mother who alternates between completely absent and homicidally hungry. She's just seeing herself having a cute tantrum over the sheer unfairness, and everybody else sees this terrifying spider they're not entirely sure will even refrain from eating them after saving them having what appears to be an epileptic seizure.

Actually Shun sticking around and fighting even when hopelessly outmatched is a satiric take on that common anime trope.
Trying to do that seriously is going to be a short trip into a shallow grave.
Shun is meant to be a caricature of a stock Shounen Isekai Hero.
He’s young, he’s hardworking and talented, he inspires people, everyone who isn’t an amoral asshole loves him, he’s completely oblivious to the feelings people have for him and he embodies all those flowery ideals of never giving up, the power of friendship and overall being a hero.
But he’s not in that sort of story.
He’s almost frustratingly naive, compared to his enemies he’s laughably weak and unskilled, said enemies understand what’s going on far better than he does, he drags his friends into his unwinnable fights and gets them hurt trying to help him because he’s too proud to back down, the power of friendship is a bad joke that won’t bridge the gap in power at all, and his heroics only serve to cause more issues by virtue of his ignorant behaviour.
This sort of story favours a pragmatic mindset over a virtuous one. Where circumstances do not construe to enable an idealistic consequence.
Also you keep saying plot twist. I don’t think it means what you think it means.
A plot development is not the same as a twist.

Some of this is perhaps spoiler, so…..
It’s kind of funny, because if Shiraori has one regret in her new life, it’s all of the pain she’s inflicted on Shun. She has effectively wrecked his life when he didn’t do anything to deserve it; he’s just in the wrong place at the wrong time. She’s simply trying to get him off the playing field and away from danger, yet Shun’s actions so often derail her meticulous plans. What makes matters worse is her subordinates, particularly Sophia and Hugo, disobeying her explicit orders is what drives Shun away from safety and into wrecking her plans. It’s actually one of the things I really dislike about Sophia - while Shiraori regrets the pain she causes Shun, Sophia relishes in it.

    • @thechh8297
      @thechh8297 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

Shun has the Hero title, and if you know what titles do then he is pretty much being forced to be an anime protagonist. Titles screw with your soul and warp your mind, twisting your being to fill the trope. Kumoko picked up...heresy nullification? Something, I can't remember. Anyway, she wasn't as badly affected because she picked up a skill/title that made her immune to being warped by titles.
Sophia and Hugo picked up a ton of titles early too, so they were mutated early on into becoming terrible people.
It's one of the very few things I find iffy with the magic system. All the powerful and important people have titles, so all of their moral failings, poor judgement, character flaws are all protected under plot armour. Although, at the same time I also find it interesting too. Becoming powerful actually changes you, so you need to be super self aware at all times, lest you become something horrible or someone you despise.

Sophia was 16 when Kumoko found her. She wasn't an ACTUAL infant. She wasn't raised to be a menace. Sophia was pissed when her new parents were murdered, because she had just grown attached to them. Kumoko grinded Sophia into having loads of skills, and she picked up Envy when she was a toddler, but Kumoko warned her to never ever use it.
Long story short Sophia used Envy, and it is heavily described that Sophia went sideways instantly, with Kumoko picking up on her change of personality immediately.

Wasn't sure if you figured out the time element, but all the class got reincarnated at the same time. Our main gal reincarnated as a spider and so her story and evolution all happened in a short time frame. All the other class had to grow through normal aging processes and so by the time they're reacting to our gal's past it had already been 10+ years. That's why they find her taratects in the cave where mother was (after she reincarnated with egg skill) and why seemingly the demon lord changes personality between the past and present. There two time periods was so expertly crafted that when you look back you smack your face at the obvious hints. It was Sophia the Vampire being in both periods that made me realize what was up but then when D revealed the backstory of why everyone reincarnated everything clicked into place. You do have to wonder how powerful Kumoko got in-between the team up with the Demon Lord Ariel and their assault on the elf village. Seeing as Sophia was still a helpless baby I suspect Kumoko living in the Labyrinth was like only 6 months to a year of power leveling, just imagine how much more skills she gained in the 15 or so years and you have one op spider girl.

Well archane is the end of her evolution tree and she isnt connected to mother and ariel anymore, so she cant start another soul-eating-skill-stealing attack, which means the only real way to improofe is by leveling up levels and skills (which takes extremely long the higher your level, pride and her natural affinity compensated that for a while but now ...) and improofing your technique, all of which takes a long time. So there arent any real shortcuts left for her to abuse the system mechanics, she already became the strongest individual after ariel (if you dont count administrators) within a year or two

Something they skipped in the anime is that Shun's other brother got captured and the group went to rescure him. But he was beheaded alongside Katja's parents right before their eyes. And then Shun used the same OP skill he used to revive Katja after her (by the way successful) suicide attempt to reattach their heads. And he got his Taboo bumped up considerably by doing so.
All the reincarnations got conceived in this world at the same time. But unlike the Humans who went through the 9 month of pregnancy, Kumoko hatched really quickly.
The Shuun story-line kicks off when he's 15 if I remember correctly. So at the start of the anime the story lines are about 15 years apart. But Kumokos story-line moves along faster, so at the end of the anime, when Kumoko gets her new body they are some 12 to 13ish years apart. And yes that means that when she evolved into this half-spider half-human monster she's just a little over two years old.

I think the thing about the daylight and her vs daylight and the rest was that we have seen her only in the dark dank underworld so suddenly having her in a completely different environment made me just do a double-check and go "Oh yeah, she hasn't been outside before!". Comparatively the others have been outside from day 1 so seeing them in a more natural environment is not a shock to the system. When they were in the labyrinth my brain was telling me "Wait this is her domain not theirs, they should be outside it is where they belong" which really added to the unnerving feeling.

@@amarojulian7409 no problem! Basically when Kumoko (MC) is a spider everyone else that reincarnated is a baby! Since human type babies are generally weak and cant do anything themselves, their progression is greatly slowed! (This includes the vampire girl Sophia)
Essentially the time jumps between (I think) 15* years ago and present day! 15 years ago being when Kumoko starts her journey and levels up and eventually leaves the cave! And present day being when she's gained a full human form with her eyes closed! For the other reincarnations, present day is when they're all in school and stuff with the 15 years being when they're all babies. This means it took Kumoko a few weeks/months to exit the labyrinth as we can see when she's protecting Sohpia, Sophia is still a baby
When they enter the labyrinth and told about the Nightmare of the labyrinth that's Kumoko that they're talking to, and the vestiges are her body clones that she made with the eggs in case she dies that one time!
I think that about explains everything from an anime without spilling any hints from the LN. If you have any more questions feel free to ask :)

  • @BaoHadir

One of my favorite bits in the light novel is when Administrator D called Kumoko (I think after she had just evolved and D was giving Kumoko the rundown on why everyone died), and during the conversation she finds out that D has Japanese snacks. D even taunts her, saying she has ice cream. So Kumoko says she's going to slap her in the face and steal her ice cream.
Also, what wasn't shown in the anime is what Kumoko did to the sick mother and child. Healing magic can't fix things like cancer. Instead, she uses magic to knock them out, then uses her scythe legs to perform pretty graphic surgery to cut out the defective organs, then healing magic to grow new ones.
Also also, if they get around to making a season 2, we have drunk Kumoko to look forward to. Turns out, Kumoko is a chatty drunk.

I didn't figure out the timeline plot twist until after we saw Julius square off with the Demon lord and Wakaba spider.
I knew there were multiple different timelines, but I didnt realize that they were still not even close to merging.
Wakaba spider had her own timeline.
The human heros had their own timeline.
Then Wakaba Human had her short glimpses thrown in every once in a while.
I didn't even know that Wakaba Human was Wakaba Spider until she evolved that last time to have the human torso.
When done correctly and done well, separate timelines all merging into one can throw off the solving of mysteries for a long time and it is so enjoyable when we finally see the whole map of what was done.
This anime did it pretty well.

  • @andreaswidham3607

One element from the light novels that the anime doesn't fully capture is the mystery of Spider's identity in the future timeline. When you figure out the fact that the humans story is over 10 years after what is going on with Spider a question presents itself... Who is Spider in the future? And the author, for several books, keeps dropping hints that it is the Demon lord. That she has spider powers, her outgoing attitude which mirrors how Spider acts in her mind, she mentions having fought an Earth Dragon before, she shows knowledge of the reincarnations...
And all that time there is White, standing loyally behind her back, silent as the grave.
PS: I'm a bit sad that I wasn't able to fully immerse myself in the mystery since I read the manga first and was pretty sure Spider couldn't be the Demon lord. But I still appreciated the skill with which the author built up to that plot twist. To my mind. If you want the full experience of trying to untangle the mysteries of the two timelines and all the different factions, the light novels should be your entry into the series.

To explain the timeline a bit more, everything that's main spider girl's perspective is when everyone first got reincarnated and everyone is a baby. 15 years after that is what's happening in the perspective of new hero boi. For example that vampire baby that spider girl is trying to protect is the same vampire that used to be the student nicknamed Spooky.

If you do read, start at Volume 1 as the prior chapters have alot of detail and scenes that are not mentioned in the show. The "last minute plot twist" you mentioned at the end has actually been obvious since the end of the previous episode. If you remembered her name, you should have known. Wakaba's human form, called by the fandom as "White" before the reveal that they're one and the same, has the same face as pre-reincarnation (other reincarnations recognised her by first glance), and it's the same face as the form she's taken at the begining of the last episode. (Warning: The rest of the comment contains stuff spoiler-inducing [as in, if you remember the entire show, this info will cause you to get spoiled])

Part of the problem with the animation in the second cour of the season is Millipense got screwed over by the studios that the subcontracted. It was apparently so bad that they had to reanimate many segments from scratch in some cases. I forget which episode it was, but one of the episodes was even postponed a week because it simply wasn’t ready for air. Add the impacts from COVID on top of that and they just had to deal with the ultimate nightmare. So while the animation was not good, it was a miracle it was as good as it looked. The story itself as well as the character development saved it from being a total disaster, not to mention the work done by Aoi Yuuki in voicing Kumoko and Shiraori (White).

It's mostly why I insist that my friends withold ANY information related to things I like. Because otherwise I tend to end up figuring out the whole plot on the spot, even off of trivial bits of information. -_-

honestly despite the labyrinth only being relevant to 2 actual characters, it feels like one of the most important landmarks in this world. Kumoko being associated with the surface is something I have as well

I know it's very unlikely, But as you've mentioned how it's one of your favorite anime, just curious if you ever thought about doing a video on ore monogatari (My Love Story)?
Anyway thanks for introducing me to a ton of new anime over the last couple of years!

All the twists, the story and plot is so expertly done in the light novel. I really recommend you read it. It might be one of the best buildup of a plot an most skillful execution of plot-twists that I've ever read in a light novel.

@@d4s0n282 I bought the books from "bookwalker". It's pretty cheep, just about 4 dollars per book. But there are free sources online though these only translate the "webnovel" not the light novel.
I would personally not recommend starting with the web novel as a few important things are changed between the web- and light- versions. (Which I realized only after reading the first 4 volumes of the web novel), but the quality of the book on bookwalker is amazing. The translation is fantastic and the author truly has a perfect sense for style, layout, good art and chapter composition.

I watched the anime fully once, almost fully once, browsed a bit twice and watched a few of these types of recaps and only THEN did i notice the time difference and that she was the white robed mage too. Now that i know now though i am even more hyped for the second season when we get to see the demon lord adventures and spiders perspective of the human-reincarnation-elf-demon battle.

What I like about the entire show was its logical continuity. It was especially clear in The villages treatment of the main character as a Divine beast. It would only be natural that the people would be all over a creature that is similar in appearance and manners to their deity of spiders and her Divine beasts. It's also predictable that after healing a child and mother of cancer, incurable diseases, that long lines of people would be coming for the same.

Personally I'd give more wins to the scenes of talking about army movement or battle plans. Purely because a lot of isekai's and such with large wars just leave those out or make it super brief
