The emphasis British students put on university prestige and ranking is embarrassing. We live in such a sad country when you think about it - and barely any students call it out, which makes that even sadder; this kind of elitism that permeates our system only makes the mental health crisis stronger, but also creates rampant inequality and lack of oppurtunities for students who don't make it to Oxbridge. In Canada, New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan, and all of Europe outside of the UK, students don't have to worry about their futures based on what university they get into on higher education high school/secondary school results day 😭
I went to Birmingham and it was good. Student life is easy there. Campus is nice, average rent is fairly cheap, transport is good, lots of nice places to go nearby the student areas, lots of places to eat well, and plenty of housing that's really close to campus (which saves you a LOT of time and money because it's so walkable). I'm going to York for my PhD and my first impressions were that transport was good and the city seems nice. I think the campus is uglier than Birmingham's, but I'll spend most of my time inside the buildings not staring at them, and the insides seemed cushy 😸 hopefully it'll be a nice time! Edit: after a few months living in York, I can't honestly say I'd recommend it. Pros: safe, reasonably walkable, nice restaurants and cafes, peace and quiet, campus has sweet, beautiful wildlife. Cons: EXPENSIVE AS HELL! I'm paying £30 more per week in rent than I was in Birmingham, more than that actually because bills aren't included. What I'm paying seems to be pretty standard. Rent alone costs nearly half my stipend. I can't imagine how the undergraduates are managing. Lack of superstores: want a decent and affordable range of food? Too bad, the nearest big Sainsbury's is a mile away, depending where you live the Aldi is half an hour away which is not something you want with heavy groceries. The closest supermarket is a Waitrose, because of course it is. Not the greatest range of food on campus. The drivers are genuinely terrible here, I was honestly shocked, especially since I thought Birmingham would be worse. I was wrong. I don't understand because the roads themselves are okay here. People are just extremely impatient and sloppy. City centre on weekends, no, the amount of people makes me feel a bit ill. And last but not least, some old woman decided to call me a bitch because...she didn't like my facial expression???? Never met such rude, horrible people in my life.
I went to KCL and sometimes I got cross lectures in UCL (basically i got admitted into UCL as well but I switched to KCL due to some reasons). UCL is a great place and unique. For the sake of the friendlinest people, I prefer UCL but KCL is wow. I find KCL is more grande and based on my experience I had balance life as well. My campus society used to throw drink event every thursday night and sometimes followed by boat parties and formal parties. School used to give me a notif for formal party outside which was held by some law firms to mingle students. My time at KCL was fine but the student societies didnt impress me much but from KCL Mooting Society I got a best friend. I just hate the examination systems which held outside school. We need to sit exams at a hall which I think wasting of money.
You sound priveleged. Thus, this isn't an accurate representation of what UCL is actually like. UCL is only friendly if you're rich. If you're not rich, then you're going to have an extremely unpleasant time. It's an elitist cesspit and a rich boy's playground. It's like the entirety of the city of London packed into one campus.
I almost did my PhD there. Can confirm, the campus is like real life Hogwarts. And the parts of the city where most university buildings are is amazing too.
As someone who grew up in Bristol, I can comfirm that The University of Bristol is very clique-y and UWE is a far better place to go for good people, and the education is great too.
Same as in Northern Ireland: QUB is a bit snobby in some subjects. Ulster University is an overall better place to go most of the time (I went to both).
Bro i went to Glasgow uni and, I can honestly say, it’s incredible! Research quality, campus, union night life and night life; I loved it ❤️ great vid bro :)
Hey @andrew , I have an offer from university of Glasgow for MBA. Being an international student it's a bit expensive for me and I am just worried about whether it's going to be worth the expenses. Please help with your experience about the career opportunities and teaching methods. Thanks
I love the campus too! I am doing a lifelonglearning course there in January. Between edinburgh and glasgow (two of the ancient unis in scotland the others being dundee, st andrews and aberdeen), glasgow is the friendliest city between the two. and it is a campus uni too.
Hello Andrew, would you mind telling me a but about Glasgow uni. I heard that uni is prestigious. What do I need to prepare for the uni? Would you like to suggest me some?
It is NOT so much about the name brand of the University but the knowledge you attain from it. Sure you can say that an Oxford degree will be accepted anywhere around the world. However, if the student did not learn enough or just passed then any University you go to is worth it.
I went to Bristol's sibling uni, UWE, and had a lovely time. Great academics, good campus, close to Bristol, and absolutely no pretension. It's a good, honest uni with character and charm, and I received a lovely education (Eng lit, 2.1) and was good friends with students and lecturers. UWE recently cracked the world's top 500 unis, and I expect it will crack the top 200 some day, maybe top 100 if it improves its academics. (UWE's law and robotics departments are world-leading, and the teaching with given a Gold by Teaching Excellence Framework.)
I agree with you , I recently applied UWE for robotics since it was highly recommended for robotics. It has so many facilities but sadly according to QS world ranking it was #800. To be honest UWE should be on the top 100s.
@@dulanabandara3769 Shame QS doesn't highly rate UWE. I got my rankings from Wikipedia. To be fair, sometimes unis can be generally good but have amazing specific degrees. Same goes for amazing unis that have decent degrees. The best British uni for robotics is UWE, so it would be better to go there than say Cambridge or Oxford if they offer said degree.
UWE is a phenomenonal unversity and is one of the best in the country even if it isn't Russel Group. Same with Aberystwyth. Lucky you! As someone living in Bristol, I salute you my friend, and I love your awesome description of the university too. It's a wonderful place from everything I've heard too, it's very warming to hear your story :) I'm applying to Manchester, Cambridge and St. Andrews but I'm worried I won't get into the latter two because I didn't get great GCSEs :(
@@Wackaz Sorry to hear about your GCSEs. I'm always surprised that unis still care about them. You've got great taste, applying to Manchester, Cambridge, and St Andrews. Good luck! LOL the way I logged out as soon as he put UCL in the “C” category 😂. UCL literally has the BEST balance of academics and nightlife/fun! Student loans help with the higher cost of living (the same as any London Uni). I had the BEST TIME OF MY LIFE there and everyone that went there says the same. Dude if none of your friends go there, better yet, if you’ve never been there then I’m really confused... C?? Loool. When else in your life will you ever be able to pay cheaper rent from normal (as students it’s highly subsidised), living in the CENTRE OF LONDON?? UCL is the reason that LONDON will always be my favourite City in the World. Even the location is bomb! Like literally Oxford Street (if you’re like me and love fashion) is on your doorstep. When I was at UCL it was the 4th best Uni in the World and every London nightclub is literally spitting distance away if you’re into that. Our societies and our balls for example are AMAZING, like seriously! It really was the BEST OF BOTH WORLDS! U-C-L!
I love cam and Edinburgh, so sweet. I just loved how friendly people were there. I’m gonna say ucl has a terrible campus layout though, my friend pays the same as other students and she got a room literally in a dungeon in the basement with no windows or space. Like seriously?
lmao so you’re basing this on whether you have good friends in any of these uni? yeah, I thought education is all about teaching and research... I guess I was wrong.
in my opinion: cambridge, oxford, imperial, LSE, UCL, king's, edinburgh, manchester, warwick, the first 9 unis are denifitely in this ranking in my opinion, and i don't know about other unis but... if you got offer from any of these 9 , you probably won't think about other unis. i dont mean other unis are not good
Not you putting Queens in F 😂😭😭 lemme just drop out real quick. But nah, it’s one of the only 2 universities in Northern Ireland so it’s fairly important and popular over here as many students don’t want to have to move too far away from home and go to England. It’s also in the Russell group I believe
I love the new perspective used here. If we search for UK best uni recommendation in any sites, the list will be the same! That's because the scoring only by academic record (maybe), but here, OMG we can see that study it's not only about study, right? haha. Ur opinion should be consider more :)
Hi Dylan, I heard a lot about the pesonalities and elitism of the students in Durham, could you please elaborate more? Cause I'm deciding which university to go to, I got offers from Manchester for Climate Change, Durham for Sociology, Leeds for International Relations, and Global Governance & Diplomacy.
I studied abroad at the University of Glasgow in the spring of 2022. I loved it so much that I decided to go back for another semester in the fall 2022!
@@craphael822 I was there for undergrad so not too sure how the masters works. But the campus itself is really nice and in a great area of Glasgow. The workload is VERY independent and you have to stay on top of your shit. For me that was different because professors at my college in the US were a bit more direct. There’s tons of clubs and societies to join. However sometimes it was hard to meet people because the campus was so big. The Glasgow university union is a cool place hang out.
Your evaluation is as subjective as it can be. Is this skill something you picked up at your uni? Are you choosing a vacation destination or a university to study?
I also went to York. Graduated in 2017. Derwent ftw! Also went to Manchester for my masters and felt York was a better university better in almost every way. Though the masters experience was very different so can't compare 1:1.
I’m going to uni next year and I’m so scared cause literally everything revolves around drinking and I can’t drink cause of a health condition so I’m fucked. Being around drunk people when your sober is the worst thing in the world yet that’s like the only way you make friends in freshers? Not looking forward to it to say the least
Some thoughts in reply to your comment; I've been planning what I'm doing in Freshers week as someone who doesn't drink and there are some events where it's alcohol free or there are mocktails etc. This is for Lancaster Uni however. So I think unis / student unions who plan freshers events are more aware nowadays that not everyone drinks so they'll probably be offering some events. However peer pressure is another thing but it's really no one's business what you can't put in your body for your own health so disregard and keep a safe distance from those who give you shit for it. Besides, who can tell the difference between a lemonade and vodka lemonade? Finally, I think it might differ between unis. A big uni in a big city (think Birmingham, London unis, Manchester) is going to have a lot more clubs etc than a smaller uni in a rural or smaller city, (eg: Lancaster, Aberystwyth). So drinking culture differs between unis.
@@lottiee964 no problem! besides, when going through the UCAS process and choosing your unis sometimes they display contact information for student union reps who will know better than anyone else about non-alcohol events, and you can always look around on the studentroom and contact universities themselves. :)
I live in London but there is literally no point in going to a London uni. London is rough, busy and expensive. Why not experience a less popular part of the UK.
@@LA-og5vj I already come from a less popular part of the UK so the busy environment of London actually appealed to me greatly. I love living here as a student (excluding the expenses ofc) and think it was a great decision to study here.

Do you go to Southampton? I'm going there for an exchange next year but haven't been able to find much about it online. Do you mind telling more about it? Thanks!
Got an offer from York after a very tough interview and it was one of my top choices. After the interview i didn't feel confident but i was surprised to find myself indifferent. I soon realized it was because the environment and people were definitely not for me. I went to Uni of Birmingham for an offer day and fell in love. I am praying i got the grades to get into UOB. If not ill end up at UEA which is still pretty awesome (was my insurance).
I've never understood the point of these illogical videos. The phrase "this uni is better because i have a friend that goes there" is abit like a child saying "i think a 2 pence coin is better than the 1 pound coin because its bigger". lol such pointless content
Nah you put Oxf*rd above Cambridge 😭 Actual hate crime. It's funny that you think it's less academically intense there though 😂 I go to Cambridge and the two are the same, how intense it is really depends on the course you're doing - STEM is much more contact time so some of my mates have Saturday lectures rip
Oxbrdge is the best. The next tier is LSE, ICL, UCL, Edin and St Andrews. The tier after is; Manchester, Warwick, Bristol, Bath, York, Durham, Nott, Kings, Southampton, Leeds, Glasgow (a lot of Oxbridge rejects will tend to end up in these institutions). Then there's probably another 2 tiers after that.
@@_kai15 Durham doesn't have the same international appeal. I personally would rank Manchester, Warwick, KCL and Bristol above Durham, thats not to say it isn't a very good Uni, it is.

Did you?
As someone who grew up in Bristol, I can comfirm that The University of Bristol is very clique-y and UWE is a far better place to go for good people, and the education is great too.
Same as in Northern Ireland: QUB is a bit snobby in some subjects. Ulster University is an overall better place to go most of the time (I went to both).

Bro i went to Glasgow uni and, I can honestly say, it’s incredible! Research quality, campus, union night life and night life; I loved it ❤️ great vid bro :)
Hey @andrew , I have an offer from university of Glasgow for MBA.

‘You’re joking! Not another one?!’ -Brenda from Bristol 😂
It is NOT so much about the name brand of the University but the knowledge you attain from it. Sure you can say that an Oxford degree will be accepted anywhere around the world. However, if the student did not learn enough or just passed then any University you go to is worth it.
is worth it? wdym?
Imperial being C... KCL F... Bristol C... But Edinburgh A*? Okay
Better to go to a uni which isn't elitist and cares more about the student than their ranking
LOL the way I logged out as soon as he put UCL in the “C” category 😂. UCL literally has the BEST balance of academics and nightlife/fun! @@craphael822 I was there for undergrad so not too sure how the masters works. But the campus itself is really nice and in a great area of Glasgow.
@@beomgguks970 Thankyou for this reply it’s made me feel better knowing there’s others like me and that there’s options!
@@lottiee964 no problem! besides, when going through the UCAS process and choosing your unis sometimes they display contact information for student union reps who will know better than anyone else about non-alcohol events, and you can always look around on the studentroom and contact universities themselves. :)
