    I recall hearing that in an interview with the developers of Elden Ring, one of them said that when it came to developing the open world for exploration, they kept referring to Breath of the Wild as the "Gold Standard" during development. Like, "Are we giving players the same kind of awe and wow factor that they got when playing Breath of the Wild? If we are, then we're doing it right."
    So yeah, Elden Ring is going to be a tough one to beat for GOTY, I can already tell, but who knows? We are just now going into April, so who knows what's in store down the road?

      Not really. Eldin is good but it _is_ a bit generic. Getting GOTY simply doesn't mean doing something very well and refined - it leans towards breaking new ground, or in the case of Starfield - space.
      If Starfield is even half what Bethesda promises, it can take GOTY. Then there's Pokémon Scarlet/Violet. You may laugh but it's going to be drowned out by the sheer racket of cash registers everywhere. Never underestimate Pokémon. Then, Open-world Pokémon!

    Way to go, Arlo. You ruined it for everyone. In all seriousness, though. I like Nintendo being transparent. The two times they've done these delay videos with Metroid Prime 4 and BOTW2 all the comments have been supportive and understanding. I hope it doesn't become a habit, but I'm all for them putting more time into things if they need to.

    • @jerryborjon
      @jerryborjon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      I’m fine with it becoming a habit actually. I certainly know a few other games that could’ve (and should’ve) been delayed.
      For example, even a delay of a few months could have helped MonolithSoft iron out some of the millions of plotholes and plot contrivances that Xenoblade 2 had. I don’t know if balancing Chain Attacks and improving the infamously bad tutorial could be possible in that short amount of time, but I’m sure it couldn’t have made them worse.

    • @jerryborjon
      @jerryborjon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@dugtrioramen - Yeah, the worst part of XC2 is definitely the “things happen just because” to me. Why did Tora help Rex when he was getting arrested by Morag? Just because. How did Pyra recover her memories after Malos erased them? Just because. Why did Rex forgive Pyra for _destroying 1/3rd of the world’s livable landmass???_ Just because. It’s clear the writers either didn’t have the time to flesh out the story, or just didn’t care.
      On the bright side, Xenoblade 3 is looking amazing already. The story looks infinitely more interesting than XC2’s “we must go to place because booby lady has memories,” it has two of the arguably best Xenoblade 1/2 characters in it (Melia and Nia), and the new characters don’t need to rely on sex appeal from the looks of it. It appears they’re putting actual effort into the story and characters this time!

    Zelda games carry much of Nintendo's legacy and is usually "the one" game of each console generation to push the boundaries of what the console is capable of, technically and in terms of innovation. They need to deliver with every game in the series or it will hurt their image severely, so any delays are definitely worth it.

    In Zelda games prior to 2017, we'd never seen a vast world like botw's. I think what's taking so long is just the fact that using botw as grounds for the sequel opens up for a huge volume of new ideas to explore compared to a more linear traditional Zelda world. I think the first botw could easily have been in development for many more years to be filled with a ton of more interesting things in that huge world, like unique dungeons, big and small and more key areas and towns to visit, so I bet what's really happening is that they currently keep coming up with new ideas for content in the game that they don't want to forgo just to meet a deadline.
    I think the longer botw2 stays in development, the better it's going to turn out because the open world is really a canvas for adding more and more and more cool stuff. I would rather have it delayed so that we get more of this than have it rushed out. Some areas in the first game were so cool, but really deserved to have some more importance. The shrines were reason enough to go to places, but I would've appreciated area-specific dungeons that don't all look the same alongside those.

      Try being a Digimon fan. Our new game is technically still coming, but it's been so long since that first delay and we've barely had any news on it. We've got our great card game, but in video games, it's been years (excluding the cheap but still updating Korean MMO and that Chinese mobile game). Our last new proper game was Hacker's memory, which is good but it's been years since then and 3 delays later we've still got no actual release date for Survive.

    I'm actually happy about this, I love that they wNna put more time into it. Its also a plus for me personally because there's only a certain few times of the year that I can really spend money on new releases and having a Zelda game come out around my birthday and after another new pokemon game hitting this holiday I think I'm pretty content with how they've set up their line up and hope it gets better as we go. Besides like you said we have so many other masterpieces to dig our teeth into and there's really not enough time to enjoy all of them as it is.

    I think DYK Gaming’s video on BOTW’s development gives some good insight. There was a LOT of playtesting among developers to not only test the game’s systems, but to track where players might be pulled to explore and where difficulty spikes in the world were. So I can only imagine each individual addition to the sequel exponentially adds development time as it’s tested and retested against everything else around it.

      Perhaps the sad part is less the wait itself, and more the fact that there hasn't been anything between BOTW and BOTW2. Between previous 3D Zelda games, there were generally at least two 2D Zelda games as well, such as the Oracle games between Majora's Mask and Wind Waker, the DS games between Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, etc., but, between BOTW and BOTW2, there's been nothing really.
      I remember them announcing a prequel to BOTW set during the calamity that was supposed to utilize Warriors gameplay, but then that game never released; instead we got some alternate-timeline fanservice game that couldn't possibly have been the prequel game that Nintendo was advertising since it, well, wasn't a prequel.

    @apersonwhomayormaynotexist9868 2 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    I've been saying this game will have a lot to do with Skyward Sword for a long time, and this master sword all but confirms it.
    For those unfamiliar, in that game, you have to forge the master sword from the goddess sword, a sword given by the goddess hylia. You do this by tempering it in sacred flames, and then getting a blessing from the goddess hylia reborn (zelda). Then, at the end of the game, we trap the essence of demise (progenitor of ganon, ganon is him reborn) inside the sword.
    Now, look at the sword. Shattered, as it might be if someone trapped inside broke free. The pattern scorched into the remains, familiar to anyone who knows the patterns of ghirahim and the imprisoned's skin. Link seems to be standing in front of something glowing orange, which is one of two things, either a sacred flame, the triforce (more likely), or zelda herself, sealed in amber like in that game. The sword glows, such as when Fi is talking to you. And lastly, on link's hand, glowing as brilliant golden as ever, the mark of the triforce. The mark that appears on Link's hand as he completes each trial in SS, becoming worthy of that piece of the triforce.
    That single shot easily makes it obvious just how important SS will be to this game, not to mention the fact that hyrule castle is rising into the sky and we see imagery very reminiscent of skyward sword during the literal sky parts of the game. It all becomes clear why that game was released for zelda 25th, and I'm glad it's finally getting the love it deserves.

Though, truthfully I'm not 'expecting' it next year either, that's just it's current release window. I actually predicted it would be released in 2025 way back when it was originally announced, let's see how close I get.

  • @LJA116
    @LJA116 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    In my mind, there’s a scale of game developers: on one side, they make games purely for the art of it or for themselves and if they make money, that’s a bonus. On the other end are developers that make games to suck as much money out of players as possible. The “art” side is mostly indie developers, and the “money” side is practically ruled by EA.
    While most major developers are much more on the “money” side of the scale, I feel like Nintendo is much closer to the middle than most of them, which is a real breath of fresh air IMO. They take the time to release good games, they release major free updates just as often as (if not more than) paid DLC, and IMO, they typically make sure the paid DLC is worth the cost. They listen to fan feedback, they (seem to) not care about making sure games are out for the holidays.
    Nintendo’s not perfect. Pokemon BD/SP particularly had issues (though that game WAS outsourced to a questionable developer), they’re way too harsh with trying to shut down fan-created content, and Nintendo has a LOT of catching up to do regarding game accessibility. But every time I see people complain about Animal Crossing or Pokemon Sw/Sh having DLC, or taking a long time/delaying releases, things like that, it REALLY annoys me.
    TL/DR: Nintendo gets a gold “Not As Bad As You Could Be - Much Better Than Most Companies Actually” star, and part of that is that they take their time with their games.

      Completely agree with all of this. Nintendo does seem to be proud of their games and the devs are in it for the art about as much as the business.
      Well everything except the Pokemon stuff. I'm pretty sure Pokemon decisions are most exclusively made by The Pokemon Company, not Nintendo or Gamefreak. The Pokemon Company are a capital B BUSINESS. They aren't in it for the art, theyr about merchandising and make sure everything lines up for the most profit possible.

      Wind Waker has always been my least favorite Zelda game. Likely because of the rushed development, the game is ok, but it's so small for what it was trying to be. So little exploration to be had. I actually love Phantom Hour Glass and Spirit Tracks. Way better games in my opinion. Probably because they were more focused on what they wanted to do with the premise with those.

      @@Alex_Barbosa Thanks for sharing. I think Wind Waker is artistically a masterpiece and carries excellent themes of adventure, courage, and attachment to the people (or talking boat kings) we meet along the way.
