What happens if you plug this into an acoustic guitar? Does it get even more acoustic? Or maybe it cancels the acousticness of the acoustic guitar and it starts sounding like an electric guitar? Someone try it please, I NEED to know.
I've tried it on bass guitar, and no, it doesn't sound like an acoustic bass, but it does give it a nice, natural woody tone, which I enjoyed a lot. But nothing like an acoustic bass.
My thing is, if I would've heard this on a record without having known it was a simulator, I would've thought it was an acoustic guitar. The facility of switching between the AC-3 & other pedals is a plus, thats why I bought it :D
Skid Row - I remember you. Awesome choice Andy. One of my favorites from Skid Row. But you make me want to buy everything you demo. You make it all sound so good.
IMO the only pedal/effect boss left out of their ME-70 multi-pedal, i'd easily switch the defretter or slow gear on that thing for a sweet AC-3 effect.
I can still feel the twang of the Strat. Maybe this is something good for one to use it for just a while within a song for some acoustic guitar sound without switching guitar.
Love the opening riff. I believe it was Skid Row's I Remember You. I have the AC-2. It was good when it came out. But I have the Roland Cube60. The Roland has a pretty good acoustic preset. The AC-2 has lost it's "soul". The other riff I recognize was GNR'S Patience.
Alright I'm an acoustic lover so I've always been skeptical of these pedals. But when Andy kicked in the piezo mode for the dobro sound I was buying in!
@aznjt No. The reason you couldn't hear the Power Stack was because I'm guessing when the AC-3 is engaged with a cable in the line out it's going to wherever you have that line out plugged into, this case being PGS's sound card. The Power Stack was on the whole time but the signal was going to the sound card, when he turned the AC-3 off the signal went right to the power stack and then to the amplifier. If something is plugged into the line out it will only play through that when engaged.
Bear in mind that this may sound better without the Pre-Amp of your amp. For example, I use a POD HD500 in the Combo Power Amp of a Blues Deluxe Reissue, and I'm sure that using a Direct Line FROM THE POWER AMP (for those who don't know, this bypasses the pre-amp) will achieve better results with such a pedal.
Quick question; if I wanted to get the most natural acoustic sound possible, would it be best to use humbuckers or single coils? And neck, bridge or middle position? I love the idea of being able to leave my acoustic at home, since I only use it on one or two songs in a gig. As always, your videos are the best around. Thanks!
It's not an exact simulation, but it's more than adequate for live purposes. Even for recording, it might sound fine tweaked into the mix as a background instrument. To be fair, this pedal sounds better in some of the other videos, I wonder if they recorded this clip with a humbucking pickup - the AC-3 sounds much, much more authentic when used with single-coils. It sounds much better on the "Boss Sound Check Video," where they certainly use a single-coil pickup.
@jazzyfella08 Agreed. I hope this doesn't sound condescending or whatever, but Andy's playing has improved a lot over the past few years. Well done mate.
the opening thing reminded me of the 90's family guy thing! "it used to bea-A that you loved mea-A but that was 1990AAeeii! and i have to saaa-A it your freee eeee eeaaaaa aa aa a aa a a a aaa a the letter A the A A aA A AAAEEEAAAA THANK YEAAAAAA!"
Hey Andy, thanks for all the cool demos. I've been using you guys lately and great prices and fast shipping. with the boss AC3 can you run both line and guitar out signals together to get the electric and acoustic flavors at the same time. I understand when you engauge the line out function it silences the guitar out signal. would be nice to have a blend.
@Stirfrygoblin 1st is I remember you by Skid Row 2nd is patience by GnR, 3rd Lake of Fire nirvanna did a cover of it i dont remember the orginal artist. 4th not a clue.....
I need help with this. I recently got one of these second hand, but I played it before I bought it and it sounded great! Once I got home the signal would dip down in volume and come back up again and pressing the pedal wouldn't make any difference... help!
wisdom! i have an explorer with seymour duncan JB's, and an SG, with an angus young humbucker in the bridge, through a marshall '77 JMP, and i couldn't ask for anything more amazing :) there's my opinion, peace!
Or a microphone, or a high quality contact microphone pickup. Piezo pickups tend to sound very dry and, more importantly, pretty fake. They don't reproduce the acoustic sound very well.
Greetings, this AC-3 seems to be very nice. I'd like to ask a thing about it. I'm playing small cafes and pubs with my acoustic guitar plugged in acoustic amp Marshall AD50D, which is very good, 'cause I can plug a microphone to the second microphone channel and I can play and sing the whole gig with it. But I have hollowbody electric guitar that I would like to use on a stage too. So my question is, would AC3 work with a hollowbody electric guitar plugged into acoustic Marshall AS50D? thanx
@aznjt At first it was just the ac3 through the line out into a mixer, then it went from the ac3 through the other output into the power stack, into an amp.
I use this pedal with it going direct to the FOH while play a Tele on the neck pickup, but I still get a hiss in the background. Although not as bad as going straight to an amp, it's still annoying. Was Andy doing anything in particular to overcome this?
What happens if you plug this into an acoustic guitar? Does it get even more acoustic? Or maybe it cancels the acousticness of the acoustic guitar and it starts sounding like an electric guitar? Someone try it please, I NEED to know.
did you ever find out?
I don't see why people rip on Boss.... I play on Boss, and I think they sound as good or better than a lot of other pedals on the market
I've tried it on bass guitar, and no, it doesn't sound like an acoustic bass, but it does give it a nice, natural woody tone, which I enjoyed a lot. But nothing like an acoustic bass.

Skid Row - I remember you.
Awesome choice Andy. One of my favorites from Skid Row. But you make me want to buy everything you demo. You make it all sound so good.
Andy you make every guitar gadget a must! Great job!!
I Remember You, Patience, Lake of Fire, Andy knows all the good riffs!
Of course real Acoustics sound better, this is meant for people gigging who can't carry two guitars
And if you need to be able to switch between acoustic and electric very quickly live
IMO the only pedal/effect boss left out of their ME-70 multi-pedal, i'd easily switch the defretter or slow gear on that thing for a sweet AC-3 effect.
The Gun's run was beautiful Andy. Good job!
1:48 guns n roses - patience
I can still feel the twang of the Strat. Maybe this is something good for one to use it for just a while within a song for some acoustic guitar sound without switching guitar.
The acoustic sound was through the "line out" output.
When the pedal is off the signal goes through the "g.amp out" output.

Damn Andy, fantastic job with "Patience!"
Beginning - I remember you By Skid Row !
I don't know, man, check out PRS's P22, that piezo pickup is incredible. Granted, its very utilitarian, but still awesome in every sense of the word!
i wonder if this guy is from the 90's?
@aznjt No. The reason you couldn't hear the Power Stack was because I'm guessing when the AC-3 is engaged with a cable in the line out it's going to wherever you have that line out plugged into, this case being PGS's sound card. I Remember You by Skid Row. its an amazing song!!

if there's an acoustic simulator, there should be a sitar, banjo and shamisen(3 stringed japanese guitar) simulators too =)
oh MAN that tone when you kicked in the Power Stack was SICK.
WITH THE STRAT it definitely goes perfect.
2:34 patience guns and roses awesome
It may not sound as good as an acoustic but it's better than haling around another guitar!
@mistakendrummer Stay tuned...
nice slide work Andy.
i love your song choices and the pedal is amazing
Shed a tear 'cause I'm missing you
I'm still alright to smile
Girl, I think about you every day now ...
Lake of Fire FTW!! Nice one Andy. :]
I remember you, -Skidrow
that's one of my favorite songs! love skid row. Awesome review guys!
I was waiting for the whistle solo in the Guns tune.... :)
actually, this isnt bad at all. sounds pretty similar to an acoustic with a sound hole pickup.
Thanks!
SICK TONE ON THE POWER STACK
I want to hear it on bass!
You basically make an Electro Acoustic guitar, an electro Acoustic-Acousic guitar.
@Metallimeister I know that XD For "in the first part" I was meaning when begins the demo at 2:34,not at the beginning of the video,my fault. Sorry
what is the first song played name?
thanks all the time. YOU are the man. yes you are !!!!
It's not an exact simulation, but it's more than adequate for live purposes. Even for recording, it might sound fine tweaked into the mix as a background instrument. @Skylarkman Lake of Fire was by the Meat Puppets, and I think the fourth song is Could This Be Magic by Van Halen?
@jazzyfella08 Agreed. I hope this doesn't sound condescending or whatever, but Andy's playing has improved a lot over the past few years. Well done mate.
Nothin' on top but a bucket and a mop and an illustrated book about birds!!!!
@Silverb0lte That's a real song, I just can't remember who wrote it...
the opening thing reminded me of the 90's family guy thing!
"it used to bea-A
that you loved mea-A
but that was 1990AAeeii!
and i have to saaa-A it
your freee eeee eeaaaaa aa aa a aa a a a aaa a
the letter A the A A aA A AAAEEEAAAA
THANK YEAAAAAA!"
Very good demo
@Eldererr there is a sitar simulator by electro harmonix
Hey Andy, thanks for all the cool demos. @tAkETM It's "I Remember You" by Skid Row. Awesome tune.
does this have that Hisss when engaged??? I noticed that on other acoustic sim pedals
@Eliteman117 That is not patience. That is Skid Row - I remember you
I need help with this. I recently got one of these second hand, but I played it before I bought it and it sounded great! Once I got home the signal would dip down in volume and come back up again and pressing the pedal wouldn't make any difference... help!
lake of fire... nice!
ill remember youuuuuuu
Over the hills and far away?? missed a good opportunity with that power stack :)
@aznjt when you are plugged into both outputs it switches between the amp out and the direct out
wisdom! i have an explorer with seymour duncan JB's, and an SG, with an angus young humbucker in the bridge, through a marshall '77 JMP, and i couldn't ask for anything more amazing :) there's my opinion, peace!
Wow... it doesn't sound digital at all. Do you think they hid a fairy with a miniature acoustic guitar in the pedal?
Or a microphone, or a high quality contact microphone pickup. Piezo pickups tend to sound very dry and, more importantly, pretty fake. They don't reproduce the acoustic sound very well.
@yearofrolling Roland has a Banjo simulator in their GR-55 guitar synthesizer. might wanna check that out.
How does it do going from Playing a heavy overdriven sound then turning it on?
Sounds good with the line out, but not that great into a guitar amp if you ask me.
Finally Boss has put out a pedal I wouldn't be ashamed to have on my board! :D
Hello Andy. quick question. did you use the AC-3 as a preamp to the ST-2? pls reply thnks.
although these boss pedal demos are really good, i'd love to see some more devi ever demos. That would be awesome!
check that your not using an AC power supply. Make sure its a DC power supply or buy the boss dc adapter
How does this sound with EMG's?????
@Eurotour93 i would'nt imagine you would put much in a chain with this but i would put it near the start after your tuners and such.
Greetings,
this AC-3 seems to be very nice. I'd like to ask a thing about it. I'm playing small cafes and pubs with my acoustic guitar plugged in acoustic amp Marshall AD50D, which is very good, 'cause I can plug a microphone to the second microphone channel and I can play and sing the whole gig with it. A lot of negative comments here - but i thought the sounds were pretty good - (not the enhanced) i wouldn't buy one - but still pretty good to me.
Is that Poor Tom by Zep at 4:16?
sounds good
Is it possible to plug active monitor speakers into the line out of the AC-3?
or is the signal too weak?
how did you switch the pedals in the begining of the video with just one click???
woke up to the sound of pouring rain... :-)
@aznjt
At first it was just the ac3 through the line out into a mixer, then it went from the ac3 through the other output into the power stack, into an amp.
haha the intro made me want to listen to some Skid Row!
which is the song that sounds at 3:40??
I use this pedal with it going direct to the FOH while play a Tele on the neck pickup, but I still get a hiss in the background. Although not as bad as going straight to an amp, it's still annoying. Was Andy doing anything in particular to overcome this?
omg great idea for an intro song
0:00-0:45 Skid Row - I remember you
I got an AC-3. When i turn up the TOP-knob, I can hear some kind of "fiss"-sound?
Is there something wrong with it?
I like the lo-fi sound of the piezo setting, but other than that, it sounds... okay. Not great. But okay.
@Tanikaze2 sick in the bad way... because its a Boss overdrive...
are these generally better to throw in your effects loop?
Wouldn't exactly get rid of the Martin for one of these.
what's the song at the begging?
Goddamn it Andy, you're the best!
whats the song he plays at the start? its realy catchy i wanna learn it.
i was going to buy this but sod it....the LINE OUT is pretty sweet but the G. AMP OUT output is really half-baked.
Hey PGS, do you think this pedal would be useful for making a guitar sound more like a hollowbody electric, like a Gretsch?
@tubaczar1 i think a Single Coil Neck pickup will work the best :)
Can someone post all the songs, I don't recognise some of them.
Opeth needs this.
I wonder what it sounds like with an acoustic plugged in
