      Run Away!
      It’s an intellectual fashion show. Think court-jesters or economic soothsayers of a kingly court: your job will be to please foppish elites.
      Seriously, find a way to be relevant with your interest in design and architecture. Fantasies like this game/channel are fun tropes, but we blew any chance to get off-world soon and you’ll be adapting today’s {prototype} buildings for tomorrow’s climate. I left architecture for SW and know I affected many more people than their Fountainhead fallacies.

      @@jonathanedwardgibson I think that’s sadly true for many who work in the field. The only way to have a fulfilling career is to strike out on your own where you have a bit more agency. Ideally doing a development and design combo where you’re the client and architect. Ultimately I tell people not to choose architecture if they’re not passionate about design. I mean truly passionate, to the point of working more hours for less money than makes any financial sense.
      The sad reality is that most architecture students graduate hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt just for the schooling required to qualify to be an architect or architectural designer, only to make less money than a cashier at a fast food joint. And that’s talking working full time plus unpaid overtime.

    I feel it is missing a "top window" for the crew and the captain. For an exploration ship, the view seems to be somewhat narrow.

    • @bogustoast22none25
      @bogustoast22none25 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      To be fair, I think this ship is designed to be detached from a main vessel. Hear me out:
      While the ship is well armored, it is lightly armed. This suggests that it has enough to survive an engagement, but not enough to win it.
      It is also a luxury vessel, with just a hoverbike and a Cyclone sized vehicle to get in the ground and explore, also lacking in any dedicated scientific console, and the one that is, is cramped together with the dining area (not a complaint, just stating a fact).
      All of this suggests that while the vessel has some combat capacity, it is mainly intended for short to medium operations, maybe just hop from one system to another, watch something here and there, and then come back.
      With that in mind, a top window doesn’t make sense, because it decreases survivability due to weaker material being used, BUT it serves another purpose. Without that window, the only the small windows on the sides and the ones at the back and front (which seem to be harder to hit, so it can afford to have them without lowering safety standards that much) it only serves to calm the hunger for exploration, rather than satisfy it.

      I should have said two jobs, since it might also be able to do VIP transport.
      And I agree, in the grand scheme of things there are other, better exploration vessels. But there's two factors that make this vessel stand out.
      1. Size. It's in an interesting spot as a "medium-large" vessel, being roughly connie-sized. The constellation currently doesn't have ANY actual competition apart from this and _technically_ the MSR (but only because the MSR is a chonker compared to other ships in its actual size class), and eventually the Corsair.
      2. Its other job - if it maintains status as a luxury ship, it'll probably be able to do VIP transport runs, which is something no other exploration ship can do. So, while it might overall be better to have separate ships for exploration and VIP transport, cost-wise that might not be viable for everyone.

    I think the prow should have hinged down from the front to become the forward landing gear and in doing so exposed a bubble nose glass you could sit and have an unobstructed view from. That blade-hook thing is interesting but doesn't harken to my childhood with zip-rip racers that had a smooth thin crescent under their noses instead of a wheel. I just feel a design idea of rule-of-cool was left unaltered when it could have been SO much better. Imagine a gang-plank with railing that extends out of the bow after the prow lowers as a landing foot and you could simply walk out there and yell at the dock crew.
    I think Drake could make a lot better design and functional use of this ship's floor format.
    The precession of the interior is designed to force the owner's presence on anyone else in it. Shower and throne opposite the elepad/ladder through the main hallway, etc. I like the large refrigerators for party supplies... or butchered animal pieces the size of refrigerators...

It took me 10 minutes and looking up an online guide to figure out how to leave my hab. And that's not even mentioning trying to fly a space ship. Unintuitive and difficult to play are an understatement. I'm hoping that this all can be chalked up to it still being in alpha and they'll work on the controls and making the game more intuitive to control later, but for now it's near unplayable unless you read a lot of guides and devote serious time to figuring out how to perform even basic in-game tasks. For example, I've seen a few people sing the praises of the mobiglass, but the text is tiny, it's all monochrome (why??), and it's difficult to figure out what you're doing at all when you're using it. If this was a single player game, you'd have to download a good menus mod or something to make the game at all playable. Ugh.
      But hey, I can run the game on the max graphical settings and it looks really beautiful. So I've got that going for me, which is nice.

    The captain's desk drawers also open up for space although it appears as if a ships inventory is pretty much all combined anyway. I like the 400i. The canopy is very 890 and the wings remind me of the 100s. What I like most in terms of the design is it's the first real step Origin has made that doesn't get bogged down in the whole 'luxury' theme. Sure it's nice and all but to me, it simply looks like a smartly laid-out ship with a clean, bright and professional design. If you want to drink champagne, fine, but if you are simply a professional cartographer looking to take 2 other professional technicians out to search and record some new jump points, then this looks to be a thematically viable option. I just find the refined look to be a nice contrast to the many military or utilitarian designs we have that are either dark or duct tape-chic. As a reasonable explorer or general purpose runabout, this is worth anyone's consideration. The real thing that I don't see anyone talking about it fuel efficiency. CI noted that it was good on gas but they made such a big deal about Origin's new AIR tech for the release of the starters, I don't know why they haven't slapped that system on all their ships. They seem to be struggling a bit to justify how this compares to a Connie so making using the AIR tech McGuffin could be a natural selling point as fuel efficiency is of paramount importance to any ship, let alone an explorer.

    The bike bay needs to hold at least a NOX (Which it does not without some massive tinkering) and the cargo bay should at least carry an origin rover. Make those two changes and this would be my favorite ship in the game.
    And what's with the dip in the roof of the top level? Doesn't seem to be any reason for it and it is quite jarring.

    I only have a couple of nitpicks about the ship, but it is certainly my favorite ship so far.
    1 - (which you brought up) the captain's bed should be bigger.
    2 - the navigation lights on the winglets. They should change the starboard side lights to green.
    3 - a way to remove or retract the upper rear turret as it blocks the panoramic view
    4 - a variant that replaces the holotable with a hot tub, seating, or other type of luxury amenity.

    • @logicalChimp
      @logicalChimp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Green starboard lights make sense when everyone shares the same orientation... but in space, when the other ship could be 'upside down' (relative to you), you can no longer make assumptions about their vector based solely on knowing which side is 'starboard', etc.

    • @jonathonspears7736
      @jonathonspears7736 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@logicalChimp that is true, however.
      Having some indication of Port and Starboard is beneficial for docking, and space lanes where you are most likely to have an incident, as well as having a fixed orientation within a space lane.

      There is also the fact that a very large percentage of the bedroom windows have an obstructed view for no good reason. The window is a stylish wraparound the entire width of the rooms, but it looks like portholes because of the beams that are in the way. It really stands out to me in an otherwise thoughtful design. @Morphologis, I would love to get an Architect's take on that.

    Love the 400I for 3 person small explorer I think its perfect in balance, the only aspect I would like is an option that has the ship little higher to allow small rover to be stored, Additionally like you I think the cabin shape not the utility better designed, even a small stair case that takes you upto a dome area, so that when you are exploring you can climb a small ladder up to and observation deck, for some reason the ceiling height level with the back of the deck is the same through the cabins, however the outside proportions front of the living area is larger, this deck area would be great to position a observation deck, alternatively place the Gun mount on the at the back of the ceiling and have an observation area that utilises the nice big bay window, which also brings me onto one small thing the curved bay window is to high. other than this I love the ship. Nice review!

    Another great review! I do really love Origin ships generally, but especially the 400i. My main grips are its abysmal roll rate (slated to be fixed, apparently) and I think the pilot guns should be dual S5 hard points. Otherwise, I love it. The adjustable lighting on the bridge is great too. CIG keeps getting better at shipwrighting!
    I love the fast little lift. Uncomplicated, no gates, just a surface that operates quickly. I've suggested something like this for the Valkyrie in lieu of the ladder. In 2951 it seems that pilots wearing armor shouldn't have to climb ladders unless it's an emergency, and this is even more true for rescue workers or anyone carrying backpacks or items in-hand.
    I *really* love your visuals and your choice of audio. Top notch there, and the way you lined up all of the Origin ships at the end was just great. Nice to see them all side-by-side like that.
    I agree with your thoughts about the front gear structure being swept back more. It would streamline it a bit without losing functionality.
