I mean, I have no problem with Seiko re-releaseing some of their old classics, but if they are going to do it, they should do it properly, right? This is still a really nice watch if you are coming to it with fresh eyes. But a bit of a half job if you remember the old one. And if you own the old one, just don't bother. Cheers, Jody

The biggest gripe is the specs, absolutely this watch looks great but Seiko fail to offer value in the spec department in comparison with many microbrands these days. Stamped rather than milled clasp, no sapphire crystal(one bump and this watch is scratched), weak bracelet etc. I say all this as an owner of the original! Islander do a much better job of offering value for a similar price!

Looks nice, but I've recently been wearing 36-38mm watches and my 40-plus millimeter watches haven't been seeing much action lately. Now if Seiko would bring this out at 38mm...

Sadly with seiko’s direction these days I just buy up some of the parts I like such as dials, hands and movements and build them to my liking for a fraction of the price Seiko wants. Plus this way I can control the quality control that has seriously been lacking over the last few years😢

I was at my local mall here in Perth and had a look in a Seiko shop and was shocked that all the Seiko 5's were $500-$600 aud ! .
You can almost get 2x San Martian's from ALI for this price !
People are suffering in todays financial climate so I don't see these flying off the shelf ,, man 10 years ago $300 was to much !
Very nice. Possibly the best looking of the new 5 series but far too chonky. Will hold for a 38mm, if it comes.

I just bought a used original SNZH for $140.00 in excellent condition.
Seiko is still my favorite brand, but their shenanigans aren't doing them favors.

I agree with the OP and all the comments. Well, can't say I'm "Team Citizen". I have the same pricing and sapphire gripe with Citizen. Do love my Tsuki-yomi though. Finally scored a cherry blue one on ebay at a reasonable price (less than half of retail).
@@tivobelievo Yeah, I dislike that about them too. Some models I can understand such as the Promaster where scratches are better than shattering underwater but the rest for the most part should have it.

Just bin the 7s movement and fit an NH36. No more shaky shaky.

Id rather buy an Orient than a Seiko at this point. I bough a brand new Sarb017 for only 380$ 10 years ago (that was msrp), thats less than some of Seiko 5s these days.

@@alansim555 Ha! It is and it isn’t. I really like the looks of the reissues, mainly because I’m new to mechanical watches, and I wasn’t aware of the originals. But the lack of specs are disappointing, and I would only buy them way down the line after they are deeply discounted. Of course by then something better comes along. Balls!

Nice to see 4 slots for micro-adjust. After market bracelets will probably have to offer on-the-fly adjustment to make replacing the bracelet worthwhile.

I have the old one in same color plus the blue. Always enjoyed the look and I’m a sucker enough to buy the new one. Maybe they have the black I missed last time. Crazy they are still fitting hollow end links and mineral crystal. The price is stupid but isn’t everything now…
Just got the number for the Helm Komodo with an Engineer bracelet, 4 years after i watched your video on it and fell in love.
I have the old blue snzh53. Just love everything about the watch. The dial, hands, polished markers, bezel etc. Dunno why I still want this model since it is almost the same look as my model above. Maybe the different movement 4r36 and fancy logo 5😅
I have the old blue one SNZH and i love it dearly. I always wanted the black and gold one, but missed it. I‘m not sure if i want the new one, because i love the old case.
And the price (around 390 Euros in Germany) for this model with these specifications is outrageous.
Jody, I'm one of the fortunate owners of the original. The OG looks way better from the "case" perspective. The SKX case is wonderful, but the OG goes even better with that dial, bezel and bracelet.

Being one that has the original, I'll keep my 7S26 movement that gives it charm and doesn't have the uncomfortable 5KX case.
Quite like the looks of this version. Kinda gave it a classic look that suits that case well. Would've liked to have sapphire, but other than that no complaints from me for the price.
I have a hard time getting excited for these Seiko watches. For the price. I would expect a better clasp, solid end links and Sapphire crystal.

It looks great, tbh. Still a huge fan of the black and gilt combo (my DressKX is black and glit). They definitely should've used the smaller case, though
I stopped buying seiko years ago. You get Sapphire from other brands for much less.
I fall into that 'new to the hobby' category and think this thing looks gorgeous. It shows how Seiko needs to work on their renders/photos on their website as I would have scrolled straight past this. I only own one automatic which is already a black and gold colour scheme, but may have to seriously consider the blue SRPK97 if it looks half as nice as this.
Yea will probably buy this when it hits grey market like Jomashop and then put it on a tropic strap
Just going to toss this out there, this is the norm in the car world and many many other worlds. If Porsche can sell the 911 with very minimal if any changes over and over again, then watches can do the same. That case shape is iconic to Seiko, so it only makes sense to get as much out of it as possible. Hell, how many "new" speedmasters has Omega released that are nearly indistinguishable from the previous model. The only reason why Seiko gets this slack is because they are an easy target, they are one of the most popular brands in the world so more people talk about them, widely available, affordable in comparison to other big brands. The end result is that Seiko makes hundreds and hundreds of different models, there will always be another one you like. Cant make everyone happy, this is why they have more options than nearly any other brand out there.

Except for not being able to choose the huge price increases, corner cutting and dodgy QC. With Seiko they come as standard. 👍😉 Recycled case, hardlex, hollow endlinks and stamped clasp in 2024…yeah, iconic. 😂

@tivobelievo7390 yeah my rent has doubled since 2018 as well, have you seen the price of groceries, the housing market, car prices? This 2024 where everything has gone up in price, no one is happy with it, not sure why people lean in on Seiko for doing when literally every company on the planet is doing the same.
@borassictime918 then the skx is a recycled case as well from the 7002 of the 1980's. Have you seen prices on the SKX, still demands high prices even though it has hardlex, hollow end links, a worse bracelet, and inferior movement. The case and the SKX literally kick started the whole modding community as we know it today, it is 100% an iconic case design, lol. This is an entry-level watch, hardlex and hollow end links should be expected as this is how Seiko have done it for decades. Every company has QC issues, just Google misaligned Rolex dials... it's 2024 everything is more expensive than it was in 2018.... Google is free my guy.
Actually, this revamp is making a lot of sense. Repurposing the SKX case means Seiko can now claim the 10ATM WR as part of the 5 Sports attributes: automatic movement, day/date complication, 10ATM WR, tough case, shock resistance (since the 4R36 / NH36 has the Diashock feature). We’ll ignore the “crown at 4” bit since the military models don’t have that.
Even original had 100m WR, hence Seiko 5 Sports name
I’m getting turned off seiko now after getting a Helm Komodo. Seriously thinking of flipping a lot of my seikos and just look at micro brands seeing as most are using the seiko movements.
The lume placement on the markers looks very odd. The day date is still a model of how to make reading it easy, something I appreciate more as my eyes get older.
I'm finally getting around to putting in a new nh36 movement in my old SKX173, honestly they really should just remake the SKX , even if its in their Prospex line. 👍
By the time I went in search of the last version(old model), it had recently been discontinued, and the price was far more than I was willing to pay. $260 US is very close to what I’d be willing to pay for this… if it comes down a little more, I’m gonna grab one. Thanks, Jody.

I have the original. My wife gifted it to me a month before our daughter was born. It has a special place in my collection and heart. I like fewer words at the bottom of the dial, and that's it. They completely killed it with 5KX case...
I happened to buy the original only few weeks ago. 100% agree with your take , absolutely nothing wrong with new model & id be perfectly happy to own one BUT given a choice I do prefer the case shape of the original . However it’s the older style logo that wins the snzh as my preference 😮, such a small thing but it’s just more classy than the silly “super man” seiko 5.
Damn Jody you got me excited about this new Samurai. I had to google it and saw it will be smaller which was what I was wishing for. Then I saw they are using hardlex crystal and pressed clasp and price is going to be 650 EUR... This is crazy, nowadays even Prospex line (and price) won't get you sapphire and proper clasp? I am really dissapointed, unless price drops to like 250 EUR I won't even consider buying one.
So glad I still have my better looking original versions !!! Black and gold, and black and silver !!! No more Seikos for me !!! But definitely just one more watch !!!
One of the first watches I bought thanks to a JOMW recommendation was the RLG "Odyssea" for a fraction of the price of this, another 50 Fathoms-inspired watch in a gorgeous slim case and fully decked out with sapphire. As nice as this looks, I really can't see the value in a Seiko these days.

I've always been a fan of black and gold/gilt. However, my Zelos SF40 in Black Sand takes that position in my collection. This Seiko does look very nice though
At this point, if you like the look of a Seiko watch that comes out, you're better off waiting for a bit and getting a better made and spec'd homage for less.

Thanks for the typically excellent video. The Seiko is nice, but I think I prefer just about every aspect of my similarly-priced Spinnaker Fleuss 50 fathoms semi-homage, including the size, dial design, and case design. The domed bezel catches the light better, the gold color of the bezel numbers is more pleasing, the date is cleaner than day/date, the sunburst is prettier, the shape of the hands is more elegant, the mix of Arabic and batons is more interesting, it has better lume, the case is thinner, the finish is at least comparable, and it has a sapphire crystal. Came on oiled leather (OK, maybe not the best for a diver), which appears to be higher quality than that Seiko bracelet. And it's not even a very recent release. By comparison, it seems like Seiko is taking it's customers somewhat for granted.
I prefer the SKXesque case shape to the nothingburger of the original. I agree it's expensive, but I will purchase this timepiece when discounted

Had a few Seiko automatics in the past and I don't miss resetting the time on them, every few days.

@@ajmarion last new Seiko with the 4r36 movement lost 1 minute every 3 days. My present Citizen eco drive gains that in a year. More than happy now.
Eco Drive is Quartz no?!
@@Chrischos a solar powered quartz, that has a 6 month power reserve in total darkness. Never would go back to a mechanical watch, especially Seiko that would lose 120hours a year, compared to the eco drive gaining 1 minute.
Still, a good alternative to the original 55 Fathom being discontinued. An original 55 Fathom now sells for US$400, provided it can be found. Hopefully, the Urchin will launch soon. ☺
What they need to re-pop is an iso SKX with a better movement.
Started my collection with seiko, but have not bought one the past 2 years. Hard to buy a new one when they look like my old ones.
I think ill keep my original thanks. They've taken away the steel inset between the hardlex and the bezel too which was a nice touch on the original, as you say lazy.
Seiko really needs to downsize this whole 5KX line down to 39mm.
And less than 12.5 thick, preferably.

If I remember correctly, they are all the same dimensions as the SKX and I think you can even swap parts. I hope someone will correct me if I am wrong.
@@brianmccord7387 They are the same dimensions, but not all of the parts are interchangeable. Some SKX mod parts won't work with the 5KX models.
The supposed reason Seiko watches are more expensive than the Ali watches is that Seiko offer "original design". However we're now just getting reissues and they still have the same movement as an Ali watch with lower quality bracelets and crystals and terrible QC. So remind me, why should I buy a seiko?
At the moment Seiko only knows how to raise prices for selling us old stuff. The swatch group, Orient,
San Martin and microbrands should be really happy about it.
I think you're forgetting that the "55 Fathoms" was an accidental homage. I never thought it looked much like a Blancpain, personally, but apparently a lot of people saw that in there somewhere.
Please talk about the Casio Fishing Gear line! I love them, but people need to ask for the company to make a manageable size. Maybe, if enough people ask, we can get a 40mm in 9 years.

I have the original with the 7S26 movement. Stopped working overnight a couple of times because of lack of enough movement during the day.
The semiofficial sm 2390 was the best watch ever, it weighed 25lbs on the wrist and had 5 crowns and 17 faces. Pity it was discontinued
Agree about Seiko being lazy (and greedy?), which is nothing new. But I always thought the 3 o´clock crown on the SNZH models was underwhelming. I like the chunky 4 o'clock crown. And this isn't an homage watch, after all.
A bit smaller, 40/20mm would've been good though.

I think a lot of people are throwing a fit. Seiko makes solid staples in simpler collections. I love the brand and think it's a pretty watch. I appreciate it moves away from the 50 fathoms homage territory. The price hikes are also pretty inexcusable but clearly that's not the street price. I'm not mad. I like the watch!

I think it looks great. Yeah, maybe they’re taking some liberties w ‘inflation!’ but that’s a great watch gift for a grad in June.
I think this reflects why I haven’t bought a new watch for quite some time; used, yes, and new parts but not a new one.
An average GADA watch . Not my cup of tea although I do wear a SEIKO Gold white face Chrono that is over 20 years of age and still ticking away quite nicely that cost $280 back in about the year 2000. Looking forward to the EREBUS purple fume on the jubilee bracelet however that I have ordered on Pre Order after narrowing the selection down to the Wimbledon colours of Green and Purple, I finally went with the colour of Royalty. A Piece Unique for sure.
I'm wearing a microbrand diver with the same movement, 200m , sapphire, milled folding clasp with completely solid jubilee bracelet, a smaller well finished brushed and polished case of same design, screw down crown, etched screw down case back and an original full lume face. But it's about 1/4 the price of this Seiko. I don't think I could ever justify wasting money on Seiko watches..
Hi Jody, I have the original......and it is gorgeous and still in my collection and worn a few times a month. Have over a hundred but am now donating most to charity and keeping the ones I really enjoy, including the original. I'm actually wearing my Seiko 55 fathoms watch as I watch this. Serendipity at work. I like the move of the crown to 4 o'clock but not happy with the case tbh. I chucked the bracelet in less than 24 hours of getting the watch, won't surprise me if that happens for this new version. I picked up mine after it was discontinued for under £200 and think I got value for money. The dial and hands are the stand outs here. If I could get this for £300, I'll be a suckered and get it. Anything over that, no, no, no.
I broke the bezel insert on my original, years ago. It was glass, not bakelite.

God-looking watch and great review, thanks. I don't mind Hardlex at all, especially in a tool watch. In fact, I prefer acrylic as I can easily polish the scratches out. Each to their own eh and I do see the point of enthusiasts wanting sapphire from the big brands as standard when the AliE Wonka luxury watch factory is fitting it on watches that cost a lot less than this Seiko model. Saying that, I suspect Seiko fit it to most of their watches as they went to the trouble of developing it as a "best of both worlds" solution that is more shatter-proof than sapphire and more scratch-resistant than normal mineral crystal; they can then reserve sapphire for their more "premium" offerings. Makes sense to me anyway.

I don't know. It's just hard to be impressed with Seiko lately. I don't mind the concept of a reissue so much, but they don't really bring much to the table here. Hardlex, rolled links, hollow end links, and a pressed clasp. And then to charge twice what they were charging for the original. I suppose if you're strictly a Seiko collector it might be worth it, but if you don't mind foregoing the Seiko logo, there are a lot of similar watches with better specs you could buy for less money.
