New 220 Gallon turtle and cichlid aquarium

  • I bought this 220 gallon tank a few months ago. I spent several weeks creating the setup: background, basking areas, and of course figuring out the plumbing system for the sump. I had never used a sump and pump for an aquarium before, and I have limited plumbing knowledge, so it was a challenge for me. But I learned a lot. I wound up using a mixture of hoses and pvc for the plumbing. Hoses are more expensive, but you can use clamps to create a seal to the pvc (which works well), plus its clear so you can watch your water flow....glorious. My fish and turtles love upgrading from the 135 gallon tank. I siphoned the water directly from my 135 gallon to my 220 and all the substrate is the same, so there was no cycling time.
    I overuse the word "uh"...so sorry about that. I'm working on it people!

    This has to be the coolest home aquarium I have ever seen! Can't believe you have cichlids, turtles and even guoramis living in peace together. Outstanding!

    My girlfriend and I had watched your video and loved your set up. Decided to go with cichlids in our tank. We were given a turtle about 6 months ago and bought a 60g tank right away. Not nearly as nice as your set up, but you should check out the video. Yours helped us.

    i wish to one day have a tank like this. i have three turtles in a 60 gallon, have basic basking docks and tank. cant really afford to buy them any fancy filters or accessories. i need to do some research on filters and pumps. i have a cheap pump but it doesnt do well. need to change my water too often. which keeps me from really decorating my tank. you tank looks great

    This is beautiful. I personally have a cichlid and turtle aquarium. I've found that the cichlids' aggression stops my turtle from harassing them, even though they're still rather small and the turtle is about four inches long. I have her with Kenyi cichlids... Maybe she doesn't fuck with them because Kenyi cichlids are assholes.

    • @charles723
      @charles723  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      He lived in the 55 with my angelfish and plants, but unfortunately he died a couple months ago. My light fixture failed on that tank, so they went a day with minimal lighting before I could get a fixture. The newer fixture was brighter and more powerful, and when I turned it on for the 1st time, my apple snail immediately let go of the glass and fell to the sand on the bottom. I kept expecting him to get up and move, but he never did. He was basically so stressed out by the sudden lighting change, that it killed him. I couldnt believe it. It was a sad day. :( He did not live to see the day when everyone in the 55 moved to the 135. I will post a vid on the 135 setup soon.

    Charles I have 2 yellow bellied sliders which tend to eat any fish I put in with them.
    How did you manage to get them to live together?
    Is it just because they're cichlids?
    Is it because they all grew up sharing the tank?
    I would like to have some fish in my turtle tank and would appreciate some help

    • @DissYraiN
      @DissYraiN 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's generally harder with juvenile turtles because they eat more protein, but as I learned from my local state aquarium, over feed the top predators and they will stop going after the harder-to-catch fish.

    Hi following and I have 60 gal and have 4 4-5inch angle fish and was wondering Can a small red eared slider live with them fine

    • @charles723
      @charles723  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not a good idea. Sliders are among the more carnivorous turtles...just watch video of them eating fish, frogs, mice, etc. I saw one where a piranha jumped out of his tank into a nearby red-eared slider tank, and guess what happened? The slider ate him lol. Your best bet is a young musk turtle or southern painted turtle (they are smaller breeds) and let him grow up with the fish. Don't buy an adult and expect him to get along with fish if he isn't use to them. Just do some research before you decide, The biggest risk I took was with the terrapin, but I found that I raised her with fish and she turned out ok. Siders get a little bigger than terrapins and seem to me to be a bit more aggressive.

      @charles723  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I might...but I think my setups are big enough for now. I don't have a video of it, but I have a 150 gallon tall acrylic tank in another room as a backup. So if any turtles decide they can't get along, they will go in there. I did not breed the baby turtles. They were ordered from kingsnake.com. 4 of my turtles are from that site.

      TeddyxxMexx the nice cheap route for sand would be pool sand that you can pick up at any hardware store just make sure to rinse it until the water turns clear before putting into your tank. Qikcrete is the brand of sand to look for.

    do you still have your setup? how did your 3 stripe mud do with the water being so deep?

    • @charles723
      @charles723  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do. My mud turtle is doing fine. You just things for them to grab onto and assist their swim upwards. And this tank has artificial branches attached to the walls like ladders. And driftwood. At the surface theres plenty of things to grab onto and a basking area where she spends a lot of time. I don't have as many fish anymore. I'm planning a move to a 480 gallon project tank I have sitting in the other room, so I'll restock when that happens later in the year.
