Excellent video Dan! These instructional video are always helpful in teaching good habits or just confirming that what someone is currently doing is correct. Keep up the great work!
Great video & tips! I constantly have to remind myself to slow down. A nice easy pace is key to help keep the tips from curling. Thank you Dan & keep it up!
I've always had long (head) hair, and currently have a medium length beard. What I do to avoid snags in my beard is the same as what I do for my head hair, and that is to comb from the bottom up, and that way avoiding snags, knots, and tangles is much easier for me. BTW I love your channel, Dan! I only discovered it early this year, but I watch your videos as often as I can, and I have learned a lot - especially about products, and things that weren't even around (or that I had never heard of) back in the 80s and early 90s.
I shaved mine off for the wife back in April. I missed it, and by end of May, I said, nah, I'm growing it back and keeping it lol. This time around, it's the chin wave (or indention). Heat is definitely helping, and just getting through the awkward phase. But every now and then, it's nice to see a refresher video on just the basics
Great job Dan! This is a fantastic demonstration of good technique. Like many, I too am guilty of combing too fast and aggressively. This is a great reminder to slow down and take my time. Thanks Dan!
Excellent video as always Dan. The Chicago Comb No 8 is an awesome comb to use and will definitely do the job like "Dan The Man Says" . I wouldn't use any other. Keep up the great videos Dan. You definitely are the Trusted Teacher of Beards. Thanks very much.
Nothing wrong with a reminder. I love my Chicago comb #8. I also have the pick. Been growing my beard for 11 months now my beared is 6 1/2 inches long and healthy. Thank you for the advise and awesome videos!!
Dan, Another great helpful tip, thanks! One thing I found that really helped with the pushing in at the jaw line is when blow drying or combing my beard…. Don’t use a mirror! This forces you to focus on letting the comb do the work. JB
Hello!!! Trans guy here, new to beard care and your channel! Definitely subscribing to come back to you for all my grooming questions!! Found ya since i realized i have no one to teach me how to use my new beard grooming set of oil, butter, and a comb. Your videos are very informative and fairly quick too so i dont have to waste a bunch of time on info that doesnt apply to me/what i need! I appreciate you making content and bringing positive vibes! Now to see if you have any videos on how to get hair to grow around my chin! 😅 Curse my genetics giving me a neck beard! 😭 At least I *think* its genetics, we'll see in time i suppose! Just finally got beard growth in the last year or so, so it will hopefully all come in time!

As one who looks for reminders/validation, I liked this! I saw but didn’t hear the comb should be held at an angle of maybe 30 to 45º, which I think helps prevent the “pushing in” you mentioned. I think “slowly and gently, like stroking a cat”. For my medium beard, I first comb up and out from neck to jaw, then down from sideburns to end.
In one video, which I can't find right now, you recommended Chicago Combs Model 6 (CC M6). THANK YOU!!! I love this comb. I am not going for the "full beard", but this comb is great. In the same video, you were not a fan of the Kent T2. I tried it anyway. While I can't scratch myself with it, the teeth are just too short as my beard (full walrus moustache and long goat-tee) fills in. I now just use it as a pocket comb. I plan to try the Kent 16T which seems more like the CC M6. I am a fan of the Kent 87T folding moustache comb. My Kent 81T Moustache Comb has not yet arrived. I may yet try the CC M2 for moustaches but prefer a more substantial handle.
the reason youd want to maybe comb in different directions is to help get rid of snags and knots. Especially if you have a curlier or wavier beard. It is also done to help fluff the beard out and give it more volume before you then brush with the grain.
Great vid! Think most struggle with dip or wave at chin. Pinching and pulling out center chin hairs and combing side of chin to lay under center (if that makes sense) is hardest to explain. Cheers!!!
I definitely need to upgrade from oxhorn comb to Chicago comb 8, this is perfect timing for this vid as ive been focusing on perfecting my combing lately.. question.. what are you using to exfoliate and how often do you need to do it?
I like that style over the traditional comb because only one width of teeth is in your beard. With traditional combs, narrow teeth get in my beard when I use wide teeth. I asked Chicago Comb to make that model and haven’t seen a reply. I’ll say my beard is medium.
For me even with oil and product in it I'll still get snags but I do use that trick with the comb where you stop and start over but I have to do it alot lol.
Many factors to that. Things can help, such as: consistent daily heat routine, combing in the shower (especially conditioner), finding the right level of dampness for your beard, etc . . .
I feel like I read that holding your comb at a 45 degree angle is best for avoiding snags. I don't recall where I read this and can't confirm whether it's true. Seems to work for me.
Hey up Dan I gave my beard some tlc today your right in saying that under the beard front it can become problematic I am taking curles and tangled hair's. It's definitely more noticeable now my beard is around chest length because the hairs look more fine. The products I currently use and have done since the start really is a brand called by my beard I don't know if you've ever use there range or if you've even Heard of it. Nothing over spectacular use a affordable range of beard products that work has intended 🧔🤘
I cant the comb forward during the first strokes through the beard. Lead with the spine and tines at a 45° lean. /> This works my tangles out with less hair getting pulled out.
do you carry a comb for your beard in your pocket? If so then what type, mine k,eeps breaking after a while so i am stuck with half a comb that works well for my moustache Great vid as always Dan..
I use a wooden comb, and keep one in my pocket. I comb several times throughout the day. Is it bad to comb a dry beard? I haven't seen any adverse effect from doing it for years now.
You know your beard best 🤝 but combing on a dry beard increases the chances for damage. The hairs are more elastic and have better slip when damp and even better with oil
Am I the only one but in the morning or when I just woke up my beard is just not so good it doesnt style good it does not have much volume vs in the evening it has great volume it feels better etc… especcialy when I hop out the shower

awesome video Dan! and Chicago Combs are top notch!
Yes they are!
Great video & tips!

Thank you Dan & keep it up!
Same here on the speed!
Straight to the point and well done!
Thank you!
Thanks Dan! My big thing I have to remember is it is not a race, slow down! Always like the reminder videos.
That’s my biggest self reminder as well
Great video! That advice on the snag is exactly what I do for those rare snags. I love my chicago comb I'm rocking the number 8 also!
Thanks man! Can’t overpower a snag

Great content Dan, you don't ever think about little bad habits you get into until the trusted teacher reminds you. Appreciate you as always. 🎅
I have to remind myself daily! “What are you rushing for?”
Great job Dan! This is a fantastic demonstration of good technique. Like many, I too am guilty of combing too fast and aggressively. This is a great reminder to slow down and take my time. Thanks Dan!
Thanks JP!
A great quick reminder video Dan! Go slow and let the comb do the work. And a carbon fiber Chicago comb works fantastic! 💯👊🤘
Thanks Phil! I think I make these to remind myself lol
Finally got my first Chicago comb #8. That comb is no joke. My beard feels perfect now.
It’s the best
Just got a couple of Chicago combs. They are awesome.

Thanks for watching my friend!
Great video - let the tool do the work, not work the tool is great guidance. Love chicago combs
Thanks Donald!
Excellent video, especially for a longer beard.
Thanks!

Oh absolutely!
Catch myself speed combing all the time. Feel like that old cop in the movie scene... "Where you going in such a hurry, son?"
Dude, it’s my biggest one too
Great vid! Think most struggle with dip or wave at chin. Pinching and pulling out center chin hairs and combing side of chin to lay under center (if that makes sense) is hardest to explain. Cheers!!!
Totally get that!
Is it better to hold the comb horizontal to the beard or slightly angled in the direction we want the hair to go?
I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer, but generally at an angle works better
Thanks
I definitely need to upgrade from oxhorn comb to Chicago comb 8, this is perfect timing for this vid as ive been focusing on perfecting my combing lately.. question.. what are you using to exfoliate and how often do you need to do it?
Daily with this comb, in the shower
Good morning
Morning!
As far as a proper comb goes, what are your thoughts on the wooden double sided combs that come with all the beard boxes?
They are totally fine for short beards
I like that style over the traditional comb because only one width of teeth is in your beard. With traditional combs, narrow teeth get in my beard when I use wide teeth. I asked Chicago Comb to make that model and haven’t seen a reply. I’ll say my beard is medium.
Does all this apply to brushing a short beard too?
Yeah, absolutely!
For me even with oil and product in it I'll still get snags but I do use that trick with the comb where you stop and start over but I have to do it alot lol.

@@DanCBearded interesting. I never thought about combing in the shower. Ill have to give that a shot.
I feel like I read that holding your comb at a 45 degree angle is best for avoiding snags. I don't recall where I read this and can't confirm whether it's true. Seems to work for me.
Not a bad method at all!
Me, too. Between 30 and 45º, I think. It looks to me that Dan is doing that although I don’t think he talks about it.
Hey Dan what's your go to beard butter right now?
Top products video coming on the 27th, stay tuned!
@@DanCBearded awesome, ty!

I have not heard of that brand, sorry!
Excellent info & interesting,I use a boar bristle brush first then comb,my question is wood, plastic or God forbid comb, your thoughts Dan ?
Carbon fiber is best for me! then horn (ox or buffalo horn), and then wood, and then plastic
You talk about using a comb, but would your tips also work with a beard brush?
Many of the methods and points do translate, yes
With my curly beard I start at the bottom or rake lightly over the top and increase depth. Otherwise pulls really bad.
Great technique!
How often should you do this?
Morning and night is a good routine
yes, dont neglect the underbeard. Quality of comb is huge, can't go wrong with chicago #8
Facts!
Well I’m doing something right anyways 🤣 Thanks Dan for the reassurance 🤝
Haha love it!
I cant the comb forward during the first strokes through the beard. Lead with the spine and tines at a 45° lean. /> This works my tangles out with less hair getting pulled out.
Finding what works for you is the most important! I am glad you found your routine
When you strip your beard . After you do this. Do you apply beard oil ?
I do once a week. I always apply oil after the shower, no matter what. On stripping wash day, I do follow with a conditioner
@@DanCBearded thanks for the info brother .
I have a Chicago Cubs number 6 but my beard is getting a little longer so I probably will have to go to a number 8 .
Sorry comb .
I have forgotten how to send you a picture of my beard . Otherwise I would send you a picture . Not to great with this new technology .
do you carry a comb for your beard in your pocket? If so then what type, mine k,eeps breaking after a while so i am stuck with half a comb that works well for my moustache
Great vid as always Dan..
I do not. I just use my hands throughout the day
My problem is always speed. I'm always running behind in the morning so I comb a little too fast.
It’s a man thing; that’s for sure!

@DanCBearded Gotcha. I use oil, so that helps. BTW, I told Denise from Pure River to contact you. I've been using her oil, and it is fantastic!
Awesome!
Mine is to thin to worry about. Would love to have thicker
Combing helps growth! Raking along the face stimulates blood flow
