Unrelated to the topic of this video, just wanted to say that the new intro (the pixel play) looks absolutely awesome! Really digging it. 1st watch through of the video, I stopped and went back, just to see it again. Don't know where you got it from, but please keep it!
6. Don't use too much oil 7. Don't listen to your own negative thoughts 8. Remain positive, patient and committed 9. Stay away from "growth products " 10. Don't sit in any barber chair without communicating what you are trying to achieve. They may know what's in style and what they think is good for you but in the end you know your face and beard and you are the one that has to live with it. 11. Don't make the mistake of not listening to Dan.
@43En what I mean by that is stay away from buying products that market themselves are beard growing oils or serums. There really isn't a quick and easy fix. Dermarollers have a place, yes and so does minoxidil but I recommend you doing the work of finding out if your genetics are capable of a beard, then try and grow one. If you feel you need minoxidil, I recommend you checking with a doctor first to see if your heart is healthy to withstand any side effects as well as other alternatives.
If you trim and get an oopsie, don’t beat yourself up and cut or shave it all off. Work with it until it grows out. It’s usually not as bad as you think and you’ll be farther ahead in growing it out. It took me 2 months to grow out a bad trim, but would’ve taken a year to grow back from a clean shave.
A big thing for me was learning my climate. Living in FL it is HUMID. Using thicker beard oils, balms, butter or waxes in the morning makes my face and beard a greasy mess all day. Using lighter oils only in the morning has drastically changed how my beard looks and feels. Great video as always
I live in Texas and have figured the same thing. Will be making my own oil later this year and have been searching and learning the different viscosity of carrier oil. I have found one company that makes an oil and butter that seem to work great in humidity. Try live bearded as their mix seems to work good. I try to stay away from a lot of heavier oils, although I have many different types, and like you it seems to work
What lighter oil brands work well for you? I tried luxurious bastard /calm and like that and bahawat currently. I'm not sure what category these fall under, but I'm trying to figure out the best situation for the southern humidity
@@minuswon lived bearded does well. Beard of god and anointed beards have some that work well. Brokeassbeards when it’s not as humid in Texas. I also have some oil coming Wednesday from daily grind that should be good by looking at their ingredients but won’t know until it gets here. Iowa beard company doesn’t seem to be as heavy as most heavier oils. Hope this helps
Teaching people the proper way to do "things" is key, but explaining why we shouldn't do or use certain "things" can be just as valuable. Thanks for making this video!
Don't assume that the beard you have when you're 20 is going to be the beard you have for the rest of your life. If it's patchy at a younger age, don't give up, getting some mileage can do wonders for your beard growth. I didn't realize my beard's full potential until I was in my late 40's. If it's thin or just not growing the way you think it should, give it time.
Patience is key! Make sure to provide enough time for trimming and styling. The times I messed my beard up the most I was rushing and took to much off. If you do not have enough time do it another day!
Being impatient.. People tell me they can’t grow a beard and immediately give up.. I say “let it gooooooo” You just need to practice good routine.. Beard oil and tips/tricks and it will happen.. You just have to get past the awkward stage.. Be patient! Let it grow!
Mistake number 7 is don't just run the clippers over your face because it will take lots of beard off and you'll have to start over with growing it out
I've gotten some passive aggressive comments on my beard, and they never really bothered me. My wife did not want me to grow it out, but when I made the decision I let her know that this is one subject that is non-negotiable, and now she actually loves it and is obsessed with it.
Probably the most important advice I’ve seen yet! I’m watching Dan exclusively now. I’ve committed many of the wrong things like improper comb/combing, beard oil over use, I even watched some else’s video who suggested I trim my beard using a #3 and # 6 guide to make it look longer. Guess what? I lost a lot of length, I now have waves and dips at the jawline. Save yourself some time, effort and heartache and watch all Dan’s videos. It’s worth his wisdom.
Great video Dan. #6- If you want a medium to long beard you gotta get through the awkward stage. For me the 1st month and a 1/2 is not awkward, it looks good. But from about 2 to 4 months my beard is sticking straight out in a lot of places. It's not horrible but it's not what I would like for a beard. But as it gets longer and starts to hang down it's a game changer. And I love my beard now. I trim it every few weeks with scissors and keep it at about a 5 to 6 month length.. and that's how I like it.
I am at about 6 inches growth and have had many wtf looks up to this point. Trimmed it once and looked like poop. Haven’t touched it since. I learned real quick that there are many stages and days that I want to shave but I just roll with it
One of my biggest problems is picking at my beard. You run your hand through your beard, feel a hair that doesn’t feel right, and you pick at it. I’ve ended up with a floor full of beard hairs and an uneven side of my beard. Try to avoid this temptation.
This! I'm constantly running my non-dominant hand through my beard. Not sure if it's because I'm nervous foods in it, that it looks bad, or what. I'm sure that kind of continuous strain is not good.
I fully agree. I pick at my beard a little too much as well. Especially at the corners of my mouth. Perhaps a video on ways to avoid picking at the beard.
Ive lit my mustache on fire thousands of time now, on safety breaks 🤙🎅🍍🌴 if you can grow a beard, aint no one gonna notice! or care. ^duel meaning on the palm tree
Great stuff Dan! The biggest mistake I’ve made is trying to fix a trim mistake. Before I knew it, half my beard was gone. If you mess up, JUST STOP. Growth will cover it.
I'm a beard newby. Years ago, I could never have seen myself growing a beard, as my facial hair doesn't grow as fast as other people. Recently, I have always had problems cutting during shaving on a facial mole, so decided to grow it while my face healed. I kept putting off shaving and surprised myself with how the beard seemed to complement my facial features. I don't know if it's here to stay, but I'm enjoying learning about it and I now get it when beard dudes used to tell me that having a beard was more a way of life than just a shaving option. Keep up the good work Dan C, you're rocking it!
Bro!!! You just changed my life. I’ve been under the impression that heat was bad for my beard. A warm blow dry makes it so much better, but I stopped using it, because of apparent misinformation. Thank you!
Probably my most hated myth ever!! Just make sure to use beard oil before. Here are some videos I know you will enjoy: th-cam.com/video/RmW1Ut5OPI0/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/GFp7Lt9HVKk/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/VtpDi75V8mg/w-d-xo.html I promise you wont regret watching! Thanks for coming in the stream tonight too 🤝
I stopped shaving in December of 2013. I think the biggest mistake I made was not giving it enough time to just grow before trimming it. I thought that because it didn't look good in the first 2 weeks, it was never going to. Boy was I wrong, just let it go and don't touch it for *at least* 90 days.
Great comment! When I'm trying to add length to my beard (which is always, haha) I aim for a trim about every 3-4 months and I keep a beard log to make sure I don't get ahead of myself.
Your insight on relationships and appearance is gold man. Damn near 20 years on married now, and thats exactly how we look at it. Be happy, be healthy, follow your heart and your style.
Trichotillomania, also known as trich, is when someone cannot resist the urge to pull out their hair. Usually caused by stress. I 100% agree with internal health
At my work place there was a part in the handbook that you must be clean shaven...well i went with that for awhile then i started out with a moustache goatee...then decided to go full on beard..my boss asked about it and i told him i was going for the Santa look and to be a Santa..well he loved that idea and it broke the ice for others to have beards and they actually have hired many now with beards...WOOT TO THE BEARD.....love this vid as always DanC..stay bearded and stay positive
Oh wow, that is amazing to hear Brian! When I started teaching at my former school, they had 1 short beard. Now there is only 1 or 2 that do not have beards
I’m 53 years old and just growing my first beard. Crazy because I have had to shave at least every other day since I was 17. This channel has been fun to watch. I had no idea on the product I should be using. At 2 1/2 weeks, my beard is about 3/4”. I guess this is about normal.
Mistakes I made in the beginning: Trimming the neckline Using a cheap black comb Spraying my beard with Axe body spray🤯 Trying to trim through the awkward phase Washing with body soap The biggest one was using crap products I found at a big box store. Thankfully I'm an analytic thinker, started doing research and found out about super awesome products. Whiskey n Hardtack and Beard Octane were my first "real" products and the difference was mind altering
Great list Dan! It's also a mistake not to allow plenty of time and have patience with your beard. There can be times when it feels like it's not growing or styling the way you want. Persevere! Don't, whatever you do, give up and shave. It'll get better just be patient!
I've been growing a full beard since I was 17. Besides jobs & school, I don't think anyone has ever asked when I'm gonna shave. I'm known as the beard guy in my circle. Good tips
Good advice. You get tired of the snide remarks but solider on. It develops confidence and character. I feel sorry for the guys that walk around with the face cover beard because they were told it's "professional".
Except for the sections that started “… mistake to avoid is avoiding …”, which were brutal on my brain, I think you covered the issues very well. Please allow me to say a lot about “pushing in on the jaw line (to avoid dips)”. Your videos about the erroneous emphasis on beard oil “for the skin” and letting your tools do the work cover this. I want to share what has proven effective for my beard. When I applied beard oil “to the skin under my beard” I never felt any oil was reaching my skin. I only felt my fingers going over the hairs. I concluded that advice to use a comb or brush to spread the oil to skin and throughout beard is good advice - at least is seems so for my beard, and I feel it on my skin. I comb or brush slowly and gently (to avoid tangles and breakage) in 3 steps to distribute oil and eliminate dips: First, with gentle skin contact, move down to where my beard starts on my neck. Second, up from there. Third, straight down past the jaw line with no skin contact from there to the end of my beard.
I was a trimmer / shaper till I found your channel. Now my beard is playing catch up but looking much better and fuller now. Thank You! For all you do. - Ken
I used to wash my beard with body wash soap until I started watching your channel about 3 years ago, and you did a video talking about why you shouldn't use head shampoo or body soap to wash my beard.
Great video Dan C - Until I found this channel I had no idea what I was doing and made the mistake of trimming my neck line and cheeks line. Since joining this community and following the trusted = master of beards Dan C my beard journey has simply been amazing and loving every minute of it and especially love that I have full /total support of my wife Danielle and involved in my journey- Thank you Dan C Appreciate all that you do .
Dan the Bearded Guru! Your advice especially on stress & water intake are key! I recently upgraded to that carbon fiber comb and it’s fantastic! I had a wooden comb before with teeth to narrow. I almost went bone comb but glad I choose carbon fiber. Keep it up Dan!
Totally agree. With all the soda, tea, energy drinks and so on. People lost how important water is to our body. Not to mention the punishment your body takes when you hit dehydration. Dehydration is a very serious event that people take lightly.
Cool topic! For me, I am 22 and just started growing my beard this march. Have not cut it since then. Now my beard is 3 inches long, although it is thin on the sides of my face. I’ve learned to use less oil on the thinner parts of my beard and focus putting more on dense areas. Too much oil will cause acne as I’ve learned the hard way. I’ve been watching Dan’s videos since the very beginning of my journey so now I know very much about beards! glad to share my experience!
Man I wish I was watching your videos years ago. But I’m thankful I am now. I just got a Kent comb for Xmas and yes, makes a world of difference. Stay bearded brothers!
I just got started on my beard growth journey. I’ve been researching how to fill in patchiness, how to make it softer, thicker, and look nicer. I have a morning routine and a nighttime routine. But I can say my patchiness is going away and it’s honestly softer than ever. I’m gonna try to go for the yeard
Been watching your videos for a while and they have the most positive influential content on beards. They have helped me stay positive in my beard growth. Keep growing and Keep the content coming.
Dude I've been going through some stuff and this video helped a lot! I'm 34 and I've been baby faced my whole life but I finally decided to start growing a beard and I'm really excited about it! I got a little push back from my family early on but they are on board now. I'm one month in and things are looking okay but only time will tell. Thanks in advance for all the tips I'll learn from you!
Good video, Dan. I've used beard wash from companies like Detroit grooming and the old whiskey and hardtack. I've also used high quality shampoo on my beard. I notice absolutely no issue. I think a lot of men use very stripping, cheap shampoo on their head. In my opinion, you shouldn't do that. And, if you use the good stuff, you can use it on your face, too. That's been my experience.
Contrary to what you said, my one beard mistake I would tell someone is don’t use heat everyday, if I’m not going out and it’s a lazy day I’m not using heat, awesome vid👍🏽
@DanCBearded my biggest mistake was allowing my barber to cut my neckline too high and my cheek line too low in the beginning growing stages. It was OK at first, but when I started to get length my beard looked transparent. My advice would be to train your barber on how to properly trim a beard, because most barbers do not know.
@@DanCBearded dude you should review the rootology “root comb.” It’s a comb that has a built in oil dispenser. Haven’t tried it myself because I can’t get a response as to what material the comb is actually made of. Looks dope though
Thanks Dan, another great video ! What other people think or say about me is none of my business. Water consumption is my only issue. Since I retired from what was a very stressful job, what you mentioned has allowed me to notice a difference in my growth and strength of my beard. Tools are definitely one of the most important. Thanks again.
Thank you Dan for the 5 beard mistakes to avoid! Great stuff. My greatest takeaway was #5 avoid what others think/say about your beard. I couldn't agree with you more. It's my beard. As long as I am happy with it, that's all that matter what other people think or say. That's huge! Thanks for all you do, you're very much appreciated.
Great video Dan! It is crazy how important proper water intake is for my beard health, night and day difference. I also mix up heat routine to good results, sometimes use heated bush near the end of styling and sometimes near the beginning then blow dry. Beard seems to respond well when mixing up the routine. Thanks Dan great topic 👍👊
Hey Dan I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for you and your videos if it wasn’t for you I would have thrown in the towel already I’ve been growing my beard since September 2022 so you know everything I’ve been going through from just not looking good to people’s negative comments if it wasn’t for all your advice I would not be having my beard that I’m starting to love. The way you speak and teach is awesome please continue with your teachings and once again THANK YOU SO MUCH !!
Dan you mentioned water and I just want to share something that I experience with all the time. As crazy as it sounds but when I don’t drink my gallon of water my sleep is off. When I do drink my water I sleep heavy. I always get compliments on my beard and they ask me “What do you to make it look like that?”. My response is look up Dan C Bearded to help you learn about your beard, recommend Beard companies that may work for them and to look for the best companies that will work for there beard and drink lots of water and to take care of your health. Thanks dude! 🫡🇺🇸
@@DanCBearded You're welcome! Anytime anyone asks for advice, I always direct them to you. This is a great video for beginners, or people that have been doing it for a bit.
One and two were easy enough, once I started watching you. "Buy quality tools, and use quality product." Ok. Done. Easy. #3 and #4 and #5 were ones I struggled with for different reasons. #3 was like "Why doesn't my beard look good lately? The butter? The wash I'm using? Not enough oil??" And yeah, that matters, but a lot of it was not enough water!! Oil can't make up for lack of water!! #4 I struggled with for a while. Always trimming. Every. Little. Thing! I was going for length, but every time something got a little too poofy or something was a little out of place, I'd trim it off. Then, ugh, did the Scuba Trim!!! 😂 Had to make use of balm and just let the beard grow. (No more balm these days.) And #5, well, all I'll say there is there's a reason I didn't grow a full beard until the pandemic, at the age of 44. 😳 Cared too much that ex wife didn't want the beard. That mom hated it. (In their defense tho, I didn't know about products, so it wasn't the best looking when it got even a little length. 😂) Now I use product, and ex wife is, well, ex, so it's all good. ☺️ Great video sir.
Awesome compilation of info as always Sir! Huge fan of Chicago combs, just ordered an Aberlite pro to try to tame those crazy mustache hairs etc instead of the tempting “pluck” (15% off w Dans code👊) thanks for making community better cheers!
When will a beard wash be available for gray beards. Like the purple shampoo? I use it sometimes to brighten my beard but I follow with a tru beard wash and conditioner
Found your channel and am loving all the wisdom you are dispensing! You’ve answered so many of my questions. Would love to see a video about how to groom when traveling or camping since you can’t haul all that stuff with you!
Welcome to the channel RB! I have two videos that will suit your request: th-cam.com/video/cDh1iQM6eT0/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/5oL6R1o0giI/w-d-xo.html
I have a lot of people in my life who hate my beard and fill their minds with selfish narratives about why they think I wear my beard. One of them being they think I want to hide my face. First of all, that's never a man's prerogative for wearing their beard. Second of all, my beard makes me happy and confident, and I couldn't care less about what people who hate my beard think of it. Let men grow and wear their beards whenever they want.
Out of my many mistakes such as using a stripping bar 2 to 3xs a week, using hair conditioner daily on it, shaving my neck, using balm daily instead of butter, I would use oil only on the wash days. I am curious how many others only used oil on wash days.
Im new to this but have benefited much from Dans videos, so far I use oil every morning, a very small touch of balm if loose ends are sticking out, and balm at night just before bed to retain hydration and I love the smell. I also have switched to beard wash and conditioner from Doc Nick’s, notice a big difference since stopping shampoo and conditioner for hair. I’m thinking about a heated brush to help straitened as my beard is quite wavy ? I don’t like the idea of a blow dryer. I just pat my beard dry, it’s still damp when i apply oil, I run my fingers thru to distribute the oil, Oil and water don’t mix so I think the little bit of wetness in the beard helps to distribute the oil thru the thick beard as I run my fingers thru ?
@thesalsathe, Dan C has a great video (or two ?) showing the proper way to use a blow dryer on your beard. I use a blow dryer almost every day using his method with no problems. It always looks better when I use the blow dryer. On days when I don’t use it, I’m just working around the house or just hanging out and just use beard oil or butter, just letting the products do the work of conditioning the beard without worrying about styling. Those heated brushes scare me though.
to pick up at your fifth point, it's especially true in the beginning when you start growing your beard. I also went through a stage where my relatives where like criticizing my beard, they said things like. ""Oh no the beard makes it look like you are not taking care of yourself ... etc"." And at this point I started doubting myself whether or not a beard is for me. But I decided to keep it and when the beard eventualy started to get longer slowly but surely the critique started to turn into compliments. The longer it grew to more I could style it. If I can give anyone advice, it would be. Be patient let it grow and then see what your possibilities are.
An early mistake I made was going to a barber without a plan or goals and leaving unsatisfied. Learning to self trim is totally worth it I think (not saying barbers are bad though). Also, knowing how much product to use is important. I made mistakes of drowning my beard in oil and balm. After adjusting and using the proper amounts, I realize how uncomfortable and unhealthy it felt using too much. Great video Dan! Excellent top 5 things I wish I would have known 3 years ago 😄 but cheers to the journey 🍻
Just started my beard after over fifty years of clean shaving. Only into it two weeks and looking forward to it. My wife….well let’s just say it’s growin’ on her. Not a lover of facial hair, but says less about it as it’s growing out. I did trim the neck to the adams apple, but will now let it grow to add the thickness. Been a spell since my goatee in my twenties and would like a full beard at sentry-six! Didn’t realize the difference in shampoos-conditioners-oils and such for the hair and beard? I just remembered wax! Thank for all the info…..this old man needed it….and who knows, maybe in time my wife’ll thank you too!
Beard octane has a leave in conditioner, but is always out of stock! I use beard octane oil during the day and the beard butter at night. My wife loves the envy scent!
Thanks for the video. I've grown a beard since I was 16, and I'm 69. I'd stop shaving in October and shave it off in April every year. Two years ago, I was reading my Bible (not trying to preach just sharing a story) . I come across a scripture Levitcus 19:27 “Never shave the hair on your foreheads, and never cut the edges of your beard. I figured great reason not shave! It's about 2 years old, but I haven't done anything to it. Truthfully, I probably won't. My wife and daughter want me to cut it off, and I considered it once on a trim. I feel good about it, and it's part of me. I like walking into a store, and some looks up and takes another look. I have been looking for some grooming advice. When I would shave, I always used a double-edged razor and shaving mug, I do miss that part. Well, thanks again for your videos.
Thank you so much for your input I really appreciate what you was talking about I was doing the opposite of what you said.i will definitely be changing my ways.again thank you so much 🎉😊
Thank you for this! I had to tell my wife this is what makes me happy and feel good about myself that was the end of that conversation! I told her I never question her makeup or hair style so don't tell me what to do with my beard.
Nice information as usual dan c i would like to add one tip which is applying mustard oil on beard believe me i am using since a month on my 7 inches beard and i didn't even feel to apply balm or butter to that. All day it's nourished deeply till next day. I believe as we use mustard oil for cooking so we can also use it for beard pure mustard oil on damp beard nothing else I feel need of.
Fifth mistake is a huge one. If you want to grow a beard you literally have to let it go and let it grow. Too many people don't have the patience or self-assurance to ignore negative feedback from others, especially family and friends. And they just end up trimming it too short or shaving it. I'd say give it at least two months, whether it's patchy or not, and just see how much progress you make in two months before doing any sort of trimming or shape-ups (try not to go to the barber or trim it yourself until at least two months. And continue along with that rule if you want to grow it even longer and longer).
Good video Dan C I've definitely fallen into a few of these inexperienced fails listening to inexperienced people their self who acted like they actually knew. Definitely got some good tips today thanks for all you do for us 💯
All fantastic information! I agree with all of it. 💯 Also, try to avoid using too much product, remember less is more And, never be afraid to try something completely new in your routine 👊🤘
Very good!!! Especially the don’t care what others think. My hairstylist wife hates my beard. She will trim it and take way too much off. So I do it myself mostly: no trimming except to even out the side to side; my right side grows slower and is thinner because of chemo and radiation treatment.
When using heat, would you recommend using a heat protection serum or something similar? My husband is trying to grow his beard out but doesn't like how it looks and yes it blew my mind to think you can use heat. Thank you for uploading
Dan, I’m new to your channel, and to be honest beards all together, at 51 I’m growing my first beard ever. I was talking to my mom and was complaining about the thin spots on my upper cheeks, she told me I should put Vicks vapor rub on my cheeks, she claimed it was a old trick for hair stimulation. I think I’ll skip on it as I don’t want to smell like Vicks. But what’s your take on the idea? Is there anything in Vicks that stimulates hair growth??
No, unfortunately that’s a net negative and will not help. Checkout something natural like the growth stim oil by Doctor Nicks= www.doctornicks.com/danc * DANC = 15% off
Hi Dan, I finally decided to go on my beard journey. I am 51yrs young and obviously gray but I realized embracing what I have is key to accepting my beard. My only issue is my wife accepting and supporting me. How should I convince her ?should I convince her ?
Just clearly communicate why you are doing it and how it supports your happiness. Your wife should respect that and support you. Just like you would for her! Tip = ask her to pick out scent profiles that sound good to her
Tools: yes!! Cheap combos and brushes are terrible!! I am an old woodworker so I made a comb from black walnut wood. I’m going to make another and change a few things, but this comb has made a huge difference!!! It’s so smooth and I use it to work beard oil through so it’s absorbing that good stuff too! Well worth the trouble!! There’s a lot of good videos on how to make one if you’re handy and want to; or just get one off Amazon for under 20 bucks. Same source I use for my beard wash. I totally agree: beard specific products are THE way to go!
My latest mistake lately is using Duke cannon best dam beard oil. Love the redwood. sent. The oil turns my beard like straw within minutes. Same with the butters/ balms. True full scarecrow effect. Reapplying doesn't remedy the problem. End of rant bearded brothers and cheers.
I had my first real beard a cpl years ago and it wasnt all that healthy at about 10 inches at the longest. Of course the craziest it got was mid summer and i ran a bbq joint always running out to the smoker with that hot dry air. Im growing one again (10 days in) . here is my question to you: i will soon have to wear a beard net. How in the world am i going to keep it looking good outside of work? Oh AND i have to wear a mask at work (i cook in a nursing home).
Oh man, those are not fun things to wear. My advice is to go oil only during the day. Then get the beard wet after wearing and try your best styling at that point
1. Cheap plastic combs are something I graduated from. But my funny experience was buying a brass comb, and eventually seeing it tarnish. 2. On the opposite end of beard products, I do not recommend beard oil from fashion designers. I found them overpriced, and the main gimmick is smelling like their fragrance (which also means added stuff.) 3. Internal health and hydration goes without saying. 4. I am guilty of this one. Possibly four self-deprecating humor, I trimmed the sides of my beard excessively, only to find a "line" where my jaw is. While one cannot tell, after a month or so, I found myself wanting to let my beard grow longer, and came to regret that trimming decision. 5. I never understood why people feel a need to be vocal on the appearance of another man's beard.
It’s said not to wash your beard everyday, but what about those of us that have a dirty job? I use Live Bearded shampoo and conditioner everyday along with the oil and butter. What’s your opinion on if I’m doing damage or should take another approach?
If you get dirty, wash your beard! I wash mine pretty close to 7 days a week because of working out. This video is perfect for you: th-cam.com/video/v27lCupyyLs/w-d-xo.html
Dan the link to the video was awesome, it put my mind to ease. I feel your pain with the Texas heat, I’m in Kansas and the summer heat is rough when your working outside.
Hello Dan, I came across your youtube channel not to long ago wanting to grow my beard as much as possible just like yours. I'm still 19 and I'm still in experienced and I just want to ask a couple questions. How do I start to make a routine for my beard? I'm hoping that I can match my beard routine products with my hair products. I've already started using only coconut oil for both since I know it has some benefits but my beard still isn't as soft as I would like with my hair. Can you recommend something else that is cheap and reliable for both my beard and hair? Any kind of help would be great. Hopefully I can learn a lot from you and many others in this community.
Don't obsess over which products to use at first. Get a quality wash, quality oil, quality brush/comb to get started. Then branch out when you're more comfortable with your beard and routine. Beard products are a dangerous rabbit hole and can be intimidating. Start simple

9. Stay away from "growth products "
10. Don't sit in any barber chair without communicating what you are trying to achieve. They may know what's in style and what they think is good for you but in the end you know your face and beard and you are the one that has to live with it.

Great add ons!
Most people don’t use enough oil.
Aren’t beard growth product’s helpful? Like a derma roller or minoxidil.
Great tip!! Thanks Andrew
solid advice brother
That exactly what happened to me and your comment made me accept it thanx man
As I just did this last week. Hate when that happens!
So true 👍 I made an oopsie myself but I weathered the storm and my beard is looking great now! My friends call me the beard God lol.
A big thing for me was learning my climate. Living in FL it is HUMID. Using thicker beard oils, balms, butter or waxes in the morning makes my face and beard a greasy mess all day. Using lighter oils only in the morning has drastically changed how my beard looks and feels. Great video as always
Extremely true!! Thank you 🤝
I live in Texas and have figured the same thing.
@kwlambright ok I'm going to check into these brands and try something new out for sure. Thanks for the the reply and info!
Teaching people the proper way to do "things" is key, but explaining why we shouldn't do or use certain "things" can be just as valuable. Thanks for making this video!
Thanks!
Fantastic add on, thank you!
Time and patience are key to growing a beard!
Patience and good products are the key to a successful beard. Also, listening to Dan C will help you to success.
@@barrygriffin6513 thank you sir 🤝
Patience is key! Make sure to provide enough time for trimming and styling. The times I messed my beard up the most I was rushing and took to much off. If you do not have enough time do it another day!
So very true!!
Being impatient.. People tell me they can’t grow a beard and immediately give up.. I say “let it gooooooo” You just need to practice good routine.. Beard oil and tips/tricks and it will happen.. You just have to get past the awkward stage.. Be patient! Let it grow!
So very true B!
Mistake #6 is taking the whole thing too seriously, overthinking it all and not having fun with it. Enjoy the process and it’s so much better!
For sure!
Appreciate this! Enjoy the hour! I am new to a beard and it’s going to be fun!
That’s great to hear!
Thank you so much Brice!
Using too much product was a huge thing for me when I first started this journey, as well as when and how to use product. Thank God for your channel!
Very very good, less is more! Thanks Chris!
This too. As my length grows I find myself questioning how much is enough, often.
Fantastic add on, thanks Eddy!
@@DanCBearded That was your fastest response ever. Lol
I am at about 6 inches growth and have had many wtf looks up to this point. Trimmed it once and looked like poop. Haven’t touched it since. I learned real quick that there are many stages and days that I want to shave but I just roll with it
@@kwlambright haha, yup. Bad beard day's. Seems like so many but graceful I don't shave it.
💯 Thank Dan, it’s great… I went through the negative comments a few days ago and I had to let them know. It’s here forever. It’s a gift from above.
One of my biggest problems is picking at my beard. You run your hand through your beard, feel a hair that doesn’t feel right, and you pick at it. I’ve ended up with a floor full of beard hairs and an uneven side of my beard. Try to avoid this temptation.
Great tip!
This! I'm constantly running my non-dominant hand through my beard. Not sure if it's because I'm nervous foods in it, that it looks bad, or what. I'm sure that kind of continuous strain is not good.
this is me for sure 😆 🤣.....my gf always tells me about the amount of my hairs she finds on the floor when cleaning
Yesss, absolutely!
Made that mistake more than once.
That’s a really cool origin story! I hope you continue to enjoy the beard and the journey
Bro!!! You just changed my life. I’ve been under the impression that heat was bad for my beard. A warm blow dry makes it so much better, but I stopped using it, because of apparent misinformation. Thank you!
Probably my most hated myth ever!! Just make sure to use beard oil before. Here are some videos I know you will enjoy:

Man, I really enjoyed the realism of this video. You have a new subscriber now. I appreciate you bro!
I appreciate it! Welcome to the channel 🤝
Oh absolutely!
Great comment! When I'm trying to add length to my beard (which is always, haha) I aim for a trim about every 3-4 months and I keep a beard log to make sure I don't get ahead of myself.
What about sideburns?
@@Kr-jx3wo I don’t thin or trim mine at all, I just blend the sideburns transition into my shaved head, a bit of a fade.
Your insight on relationships and appearance is gold man. Damn near 20 years on married now, and thats exactly how we look at it. Be happy, be healthy, follow your heart and your style.
Absolutely 🤝
Trichotillomania, also known as trich, is when someone cannot resist the urge to pull out their hair. Usually caused by stress. I 100% agree with internal health
We actually just talked about that on Wednesday during beard advice live!
My stylist will not touch the beard except to trim the sideburn areas that gets too long to match the beard
I’m glad you found the channel! Beard wash and beard oil focus early. Keep it simple 🤝
Mistakes I made in the beginning:
Trimming the neckline
Using a cheap black comb
Spraying my beard with Axe body spray🤯
Trying to trim through the awkward phase
Washing with body soap
The biggest one was using crap products I found at a big box store. Thankfully I'm an analytic thinker, started doing research and found out about super awesome products. Whiskey n Hardtack and Beard Octane were my first "real" products and the difference was mind altering
Not axe body spray!! Nooo lol
@@DanCBearded I know! I get nauseous when I think back to 2018🤣
I never had a neckline until finding this community. I used 2 always keep my beard at the jawline 😬
@@OGFitzRoy Exactly....that's all we knew back then
Great list Dan! It's also a mistake not to allow plenty of time and have patience with your beard. There can be times when it feels like it's not growing or styling the way you want. Persevere! Don't, whatever you do, give up and shave. It'll get better just be patient!
So true, thanks!
I've been growing a full beard since I was 17. Besides jobs & school, I don't think anyone has ever asked when I'm gonna shave. I'm known as the beard guy in my circle. Good tips
That’s so cool!
I'm growing out my beard, and I need to learn how to care for it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Oh awesome, I am glad you found the channel!
Good advice. You get tired of the snide remarks but solider on. It develops confidence and character. I feel sorry for the guys that walk around with the face cover beard because they were told it's "professional".
Very true!
Thanks for the feedback Leo.
I was a trimmer / shaper till I found your channel. Now my beard is playing catch up but looking much better and fuller now. Thank You! For all you do. - Ken
That is awesome Ken!
I used to wash my beard with body wash soap until I started watching your channel about 3 years ago, and you did a video talking about why you shouldn't use head shampoo or body soap to wash my beard.
Perfect add on!

That’s awesome to hear!
Totally agree. With all the soda, tea, energy drinks and so on. People lost how important water is to our body. Not to mention the punishment your body takes when you hit dehydration. Dehydration is a very serious event that people take lightly.
@@jerseyjoes nailed it! 🙌💯
I appreciate that!
Man I wish I was watching your videos years ago. But I’m thankful I am now. I just got a Kent comb for Xmas and yes, makes a world of difference. Stay bearded brothers!
I’m happy you are here now too!
Dude that’s awesome Zach!
Been watching your videos for a while and they have the most positive influential content on beards. They have helped me stay positive in my beard growth. Keep growing and Keep the content coming.
Thank you so much Nicholas!!
Welcome to the channel and the beard journey!
Grow that beard and kick ass man!
Thanks for sharing!
I’m just going into my 3rd year of no cutting or trimming, not even neckline, boy can you mess it up fast when you start shaping it.
Contrary to what you said, my one beard mistake I would tell someone is don’t use heat everyday, if I’m not going out and it’s a lazy day I’m not using heat, awesome vid👍🏽
Oh absolutely, totally personal preference there!
Oh man, so true and so common!
That’s great butch!!
Absolutely! Thanks man
Great video Dan!
It really makes all the difference!
Hi

Dan you mentioned water and I just want to share something that I experience with all the time. As crazy as it sounds but when I don’t drink my gallon of water my sleep is off. When I do drink my water I sleep heavy. I always get compliments on my beard and they ask me “What do you to make it look like that?”. My response is look up Dan C Bearded to help you learn about your beard, recommend Beard companies that may work for them and to look for the best companies that will work for there beard and drink lots of water and to take care of your health. Thanks dude! 🫡🇺🇸
Man that means a lot, thank you E! And I agree entirely with the water and sleep!
Great tips Dan. I may not always comment, but I see, like, and obtain what's for me. Good content.

Thank you!
(No more balm these days.)
And #5, well, all I'll say there is there's a reason I didn't grow a full beard until the pandemic, at the age of 44. 😳 Cared too much that ex wife didn't want the beard. That mom hated it. (In their defense tho, I didn't know about products, so it wasn't the best looking when it got even a little length. 😂)
Now I use product, and ex wife is, well, ex, so it's all good. ☺️
Great video sir.
Love the looking back perspective!
Awesome compilation of info as always Sir! Huge fan of Chicago combs, just ordered an Aberlite pro to try to tame those crazy mustache hairs etc instead of the tempting “pluck” (15% off w Dans code👊) thanks for making community better cheers!

Dang right!
Out of my many mistakes such as using a stripping bar 2 to 3xs a week, using hair conditioner daily on it, shaving my neck, using balm daily instead of butter, I would use oil only on the wash days. I am curious how many others only used oil on wash days.
Over stripping is for sure a mistake!
@thesalsathe,
Dan C has a great video (or two ?) showing the proper way to use a blow dryer on your beard.
Very true and great add on points, thank you!
Thanks Dan CB, as always good information for the bearded masses. Peace
Thank you!
Great feedback from experience!
That’s great! Always here to help
I’m almost 58 and started my first beard a month and a half ago.
Beard octane has a leave in conditioner, but is always out of stock! I use beard octane oil during the day and the beard butter at night. My wife loves the envy scent!
That’s great, but hopefully they restock
Thank you so much for your input I really appreciate what you was talking about I was doing the opposite of what you said.i will definitely be changing my ways.again thank you so much 🎉😊
Always happy to help James!
Thank you for getting back with me
Thank you for this! I had to tell my wife this is what makes me happy and feel good about myself that was the end of that conversation! I told her I never question her makeup or hair style so don't tell me what to do with my beard.
Exactly!!
Thanks for the feedback!
I bought a wide tooth carbon fiber comb from Chicago combs (i think) on Amazon. I love it so much I bought another.
Oh awesome!
Great feedback!
Great advice as always Dan C! I always appreciate and enjoy watching your videos thanks man.

Very good!!! Especially the don’t care what others think. My hairstylist wife hates my beard. She will trim it and take way too much off. So I do it myself mostly: no trimming except to even out the side to side; my right side grows slower and is thinner because of chemo and radiation treatment.
Thanks Rob!
When using heat, would you recommend using a heat protection serum or something similar? My husband is trying to grow his beard out but doesn't like how it looks and yes it blew my mind to think you can use heat. Thank you for uploading
Any quality beard oil will work! th-cam.com/video/kmU9CrPGTig/w-d-xo.html
Checkout something natural like the growth stim oil by Doctor Nicks= www.doctornicks.com/danc

Awesome video! Dan.
Thank you Jim!
Tip = ask her to pick out scent profiles that sound good to her
Another great video. Asa. Newbie to the neared lifestyle I enjoy all the advice.
Oh awesome, thanks Richard!
Love this video
Thank you!
Wood combs are a great option!
Yup, unfortunately they use “hydrated silica”
Awesome video Dan! Great list for sure! 💯
Thank you!
1. Cheap plastic combs are something I graduated from. But my funny experience was buying a brass comb, and eventually seeing it tarnish.
2. On the opposite end of beard products, I do not recommend beard oil from fashion designers. I found them overpriced, and the main gimmick is smelling like their fragrance (which also means added stuff.)
Love this!!! Thank you for taking the time to leave this
Hey Dan C do you still do cold water rinses? I've been doing them and it's been really great for the health of my beard.
Yes, at the end of every shower
Bro I love your channel 💪
Thanks Nate!
The Wet Brush has been the greatest tool I have ever used for my beard. For longer beards a Wet Brush is a must for tangle free brushing.
Awesome add on, thanks man!
I do the same as I live in Texas where you sweat even in the winter. Live bearded products are good as I keep going back to them in my arsenal
Dan the link to the video was awesome, it put my mind to ease.
I feel your pain with the Texas heat, I’m in Kansas and the summer heat is rough when your working outside.
very interesting! Thanks for the tips!
You’re welcome!
For beard oil, you can’t go wrong with honest for inexpensive but quality!
Loved these tips! Thanks a lot!!
Thanks Kevin!
Don't obsess over which products to use at first. Get a quality wash, quality oil, quality brush/comb to get started. Then branch out when you're more comfortable with your beard and routine. Beard products are a dangerous rabbit hole and can be intimidating. Start simple
Great advice!
