Yepp, that's definitely an early example. We had one from 2002 and in the first production year, the airbag label on the dash was different. It's more seamless, you have to check it to see it's there. Also the VW logo is blue in the steering wheel, not grey, like the cars have from the 2003 modell year.
I did 180 too but on the GPS, autobahn 73 to Cuxhaven, with unmodified 75hp 9N TDI, probably 185 on the speedometer. Very close to the engine ruptor point. It took about 5 km to reach that speed on flat terrain.

Mine has 400.000 km and still make 180.... insane

Not really, even in the registration of the car it is given a top speed of 170kmh
