    The most realistic part of this movie was Ultron spending one (1) minute on the internet and concluding that humanity is beyond redemption and must be destroyed.

    One of the reasons Quicksilver dies in this film is a character rights issue. Fox got the rights to all things mutant from Marvel. At the time of the deal (late 90's) in the comics, Quicksilver and Wanda were mutants, one of the many children of Magento. On the other hand, they were better know as being members of the Avengers. So, Fox and Marvel decided to split them up. Quicksilver would be in the X-men cinematic universe with minor mentions of Wanda. Wanda would be in the MCU with this exit of Quicksilver. She fit better and had more potential for storylines in the MCU as they could explore her magical side in ways Fox was not allowed to do as well as her relationship with Vison.

    (my theory) The reason Ultron is so prone to fits of anger is that his emotional intelligence is very stunted. He has massive traditional intellect due to his computational power, but emotionally he's a toddler.

    8:24 "Deep sixed " is slang for destroy. To my knowledge it originated from ships that would do burials at sea. For a proper sea burial the depth would have to be at least 6 fathoms deep. It also goes along with land burials by having the minimum burial to be 6 ft.

    I think that while the visions made most of the characters fall victim, in their own minds, to their greatest fears..... that because Thor is a literal god, that the mind control was not 100%.
    In Thor's vision, Heimdell speaks to him and allows him to think 'beyond' the mind control, and perhaps defeat it. This could be 'actual Heimdell making contact with Thor, or it could be just the representation of Thor's mind breaking itself free from the control.
    I would assume that mind controlling a god wouldn't be as easy as the others.

      I think part of it was the general sequel thing… It arguably is a bit more of a mess than the first Avengers… Balancing all the characters and plot was maybe a little lacking… Some people felt the Hulk and Black Widow relationship kinda came out of nowhere… I think some were just disappointed…
      I don’t know, I forget… I think in the grand scheme of things it’s still a pretty good, fun movie and maybe a bit underrated.

      It's mostly because there are a lot of things in this movie that set-up a lot of stuff for the next ones, but when this was showing in theaters it felt like those elements felt a bit out of place. And without the benefit of hindsight, or having seen the ones that followed, it really was.
      There's also the disconnect between the tone set-up by the trailers, and the actual movie.

    • @theadamabrams
      @theadamabrams หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I think part of it was the marketing. The trailer played up the horror/creepiness and impact of Ultron, but then in the movie he's cracking jokes and the "Age" of his reign is literally a week. He's still terrifying, sure, but the tone of the movie overall is now what I was expecting at all. With some distance, I like the movie a lot more than I did at the time.
      Some people also didn't like how much of the movie was spent setting up other stuff, but I actually like that, for the most part.

  • @thatpatrickguy3446
    @thatpatrickguy3446 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    Great reaction to a great movie!
    Hawkeye was always my favorite MCU Avenger, but I liked him in the comics I read in my youth too. He is, as you noticed, very much the Avengers Dad, especially with the speech he gave Wanda in the midst of the battle, laying everything out clearly and letting her know what her options were and the expectations for her depending on which option she chose. Very dadlike. I also loved getting to see his family in this movie, and the interactions he and Nat had with them. It's great that Clint's family adores and welcomes "Auntie" Nat. It gives her that place to belong and be loved for who she is, and everybody needs that. And it also was nice that Quicksilver's sacrifice was memorialized when the infant Nathaniel Barton was given the middle name Pietro, Quicksilver's name.
    Speaking of Auntie Nat, she is absolutely the Avengers Mom. Her line "I'm always picking up after you boys." as she swooped by on the motorbike to pick up Cap's shield to return it to him just underscored that. Such a Mom thing to say. And, as the Avengers Parents, you'll notice that they're often doing all they can to try to keep the bickering between the "children" in the group to a minimum and to try to keep the team working together.
    I also loved seeing that the regular everyman from Winter Soldier was still alive and still working with Fury's group on the helicarrier. It's always good to see an everyman character with zero powers or abilities being brave, and then seeing that he survived his bravery and is still working hard to do good still.
    I loved the use of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in this movie, though I hated that Pietro died, though he did go out with a great last line. Wanda was so well done in Phase Three of the MCU as that they gave her insecurities and weaknesses and fears to overcome so she would be a character instead of just making her a cheat code, and she is powerful enough to be that. Clint, Nat, and Wanda are my favorite MCU characters, just ahead of Steve and Tony, but I guess I've always liked the "lesser known" characters best. 😛

    1:10:26 The 'real-life' reason why Gwyneth Paltrow did not appear in this film is her contract for four films (Iron-Man, Iron-Man 2, The Avengers, and Iron-Man 3) had expired, and she had not signed a new contract to appear in future MCU films. Pepper's presence (or lack there-of) will be addressed more directly in a couple of future MCU films.

    I think there are more nuances to the Nat/Bruce relationship and Hulk leaving than just his not thinking they had a future/could have a family. Hulk and Bruce are 2 different personalities, BUT connected. When Nat pushed him to bring the Hulk because they needed him, it was a little bit of a betrayal to Bruce, and it was Hulk feeling like he's just being used when they need him and discarded other times.

    To "Deep Six" - definition...
    To hide or dispose of something in such a way that it will be extremely difficult or impossible to find or recover, even for the person doing the hiding. Get rid of. Nautical in origin, it comes from a call indicating a depth of six fathoms (over ten meters), a depth from which recovery of an item tossed overboard would be very difficult.

    Quicksilver’s sacrifice to save Hawkeye: he was actually saving the little kid. There is a deleted scene from early in the film where he meets the kid and mother in a street market.
    But omitting that scene works well because it seems like it’s to save an Avenger.

    • @gerstelb

    8:22 - The expression 'deep six' originated in the 1920s and it means to get rid of or destroy something. Many people think it's related to being buried 'six feet under,' but I think the nautical explanation (that items that have sunk below 6 fathoms are almost impossible to retrieve) is more likely given the phrasing.
    23:05 - Meet the Hulkbuster Armor. Tony's contingency against The Hulk going out of control.
    44:00 - This is one of the few moments where Agents of SHIELD comes back to inform the movies. A big part of the 3rd season plot involves secretly building this helecarrier.

    56:10 Wanda was making each Avenger see their worst fears come to life; For Tony, not being able to stop an alien invasion and all his friends are killed because he could not stop it. For Thor, being responsible for the destruction of Asgard and the decimation of his people. For Steve, the "war" ending and no longer having a purpose. For Natasha, reliving her training in the Red Room that took away any possibility of a normal life. (This topic will be touched on again during the Black Widow film in Phase 4.) We don't get to see what Banner's nightmare scenario is, but likely something to do with the Hulk being truly unleashed. And Clint managed to see what was coming and circumvented it. Wanda's power to do this will come up again in the future.

    Capt being able to move the hammer means that he is worthy. I think deep down he knew he could have lifted it all the way but because he's humble he didn't. Remember the hammer is not physically super heavy but you have to be worthy to be able to carry it.

    Wanda can make them see what she wants them to see. However, in this particular movie she made them see their greatest fears (regarding the future). Literally their worst nightmare about their possible futures. (It is not Wanda's only power btw...and in the comics her "superhero name" is Scarlet Witch - well her whole character is different though as in the comics she is actually a mutant which they changed in the MCU-version of her).

    The reason Tony refers to the big “hulk-buster” suit as Veronica is a reference to the Archie comics. Archie had two girls competing for his attention: nice blonde Betty and mean black-haired Veronica. And Bruce has a girlfriend named Betty.

    "Deep 6" is a term meaning to bury. As in 6 feet under.

    • @JacksonDiddles
      @JacksonDiddles หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Or burial at sea which is 6 fathoms (much deeper than 6 feet and more appropriate). To deep six something is to bury or dispose of it so deep nobody finds it.

    Scarlett Witch taps into fears and anxieties within the person. In Tony’s case, it stems from Avengers 1 when he went through the wormhole. It isn’t so much being lost in space as it was the realization that despite all of his suits it likely wouldn’t be enough to protect Earth when the next invasion came. Scarlett Witch saw this when she prompted the vision which is why she let him have the scepter believing he would create his own demise.

    "What does deep six the data mean?" The phrase "deep six" is a slang term that means to get rid of or destroy something. So, Tony saying that they deep sixed the data just means they deleted all of the data.

    A lot of the debate surrounding Vision and Mjolnir stems from the common public misunderstanding (that is then perpetuated in this movie) that he's a "machine" and we are "alive." In the comics (which I haven't read, but have heard fanboys prattle on endlessly about), I believe it's because he essentially doesn't have a "soul." Although...I think he gets one later, or something?
    But in reality, we're machines too. The chemistry that makes every bit of us function at all is, for all intents and purposes, a form of naturally-occurring nanotechnology. That's it. That's all there is to it. Whether it's natural or "man-made" is irrelevant. Whether it's carbon-based or (apparently) vibranium-based, is irrelevant. The processes are the same. And so is the result, fundamentally.
    Vision is as "alive" as any other organism, and as such is judged by Mjolnir in the same way.
    Vision is worthy...which, he demonstrates many times later on.

    You can just look at Wanda's wiki for her powers. Every character of any universe has a wiki and all the Marvel ones have ratings in powers and abilities from 1 (human) to 7 (god-like).

    In marine jargon, a fathom is 6 feet. To "deep six" something is to dump it in the ocean many times deeper than that.
    @16:30 - Ultron wouldn't be here if Tony had practiced basic computer security. You don't connect test software to your operating programs or the Internet. I used to test software for the Space Station program. Our test systems were completely isolated from the Internet because of the risk of hacking or other problems.
    "Age of Ultron" is a bit of a joke title, since he exists for only ~3 days.
    Banner: "Where in the world am I not a threat?" - This makes more sense in a later film.
    @57m - Wanda's powers. Wanda's powers came from the Mind Stone (the yellow one). So she can affect people's minds in many ways. One is to draw out their fears. Another is to control people's minds, like Loki did when it was part of his scepter. The other part of her power is magical. She had natural magic before the Mind Stone, but the stone amplified it to where she could stop a train or tear apart a robot.
