I feel like the cd009 is the best bang for your buck. Very very strong. Strong triple cone synchronizers. I’ve heard them holding 800hp+ and they’re 6 speed!! And they’re everywhere! 350z’s and G35’s sedan and coupes. The earlier CD trans are basically identical in terms of looks and gear and shaft strengths. Their only weakness is the synchronizer rings. Specifically 3rd and 5th gear. they would grind like mad and you’d eventually lose those gears. I hope this helps good video!
If you want a different trans that’s never looked on is a R150 out of 96-04 Tacoma , 4Runner. But make sure it’s the R150 and not the R150F since the “F” is a 4x4 transmission and the other is a regular 2x4. It can handle around 4-500 hrsp maybe a bit more. And are 300 or less. Can be found in every junkyard. They do have tall 1-2 gears since it was meant for a truck so a common thing would be to swap rear diff to make it more balanced but for the price of 300 for the trans and to handle 500hrsp it’s definitely worth it, I believe you can use the same r154 clutches since it is a R series transmission
I know a lot of people would want to do this, but personally I would just bump up the power a bit, maybe add an exhaust and tune it but I definitely prefer the automatic in the SC's. I'm 50 though, so if you asked me 20 years ago I'd have said hell yea, convert it!
There’s a six speed bmw zf gearbox. Gs6-53dz. Pmc do an adapter kit and they are super strong. I’ll be swapping one into my 1jz soarer very soon. As for cross members for the bmw boxes you can use the original one from the auto and drill two new holes for the bushings on the bmw boxes. Prop shaft will be custom then. The master cylinder has to be a bigger bore. A one inch land cruiser works well supposedly and it’s bolt on. The shifter can be done so that you don’t need to cut the tunnel as-well so keeps the shell original.
I completed a manual swap on my 92 sc400 last spring. I managed to buy cd009 for $700 back in 2020, since I wanted to have an option for more HP if I ever decided to go that way. As for adapter, I decided to go with fisch racing tech 1uz adapter. The whole project cost me north of $5k including labor. The only problem is you will have to figure out how you gonna do the speedo (GPS or ABS) since cd009 doesn't have speed sensor inside it.
how did you set your speedo up? i might do full standalone so it might not matter but im a couple weeks out from receiving a built block from XAT and im still figuring out how i wanna set up the manual swap. Collins makes a kit for the S13 5 speed as well that i was looking at but now sure if the KA24DE trans has a speed sensor or not
I fitted a V160 6 speed into mine. The kit came complete and I got to test it out in a JZA80 before it was parted out. Came with a TRD Clutch, clutch line, trans mount. The TRD clutch has been holding 550whp fine behind my 1JZ-VVTI. Pricey, but worth it considering it all bolted right in.
@@Edward3jr I shall and have no intention of letting the car or the trans go. I bought my complete V160 conversion years ago for 4.5k... I have a decent idea of what it's all worth today.. hot damn have they gone up in price.
No need to modify the tail housing on an AR-5. You just need a different shifter cover for whichever car youre putting it in. You can even use W58 flywheel/pressure plate and a chevy S10 clutch disc. Both the AR-5 and R154 are good for around 500-550 torque.
I think the capability of this trans depends on how you drive them honestly. I’ve broken r154’s at 400hp/tq, had one in my last jz mk3 and made 648/600tq no issue for 12 years but I wasn’t beating on it and shifting it normal. The ar5 is quite impressive for a (Colorado) $350 trans around here.
Great list! There is also the V161 which came out of the jdm supra (which no one cared for years ago). Still a pretty penny but might save a bit versus an actual V161. AR5’s are great under 300hp/tq. You can use grassroots adapters and put on an LS. High rpm grinds and 3rd lock outs. Synchros shift forks and pinions fail. Over 8 replaced in 355 Colorados. All tuned over 7k rpm

Yes and I misspoke on this, I meant shifter housing and my understanding on this is that you can swap parts from an r154 to an ar5. This thread goes into a lot of details and is well worth the read. www.my.is/threads/comprehensive-ar5-swap-thread.566154/
You need to go more in debt with w58. Because the one you showed isn't comparable to a Mk4 or sc varient. Later versions had triple synchros and wider bearings. Things that do make them hold more power. My sc swan neck has taken 21 psi from my sp63 on my 2jzgte vvti. Took enough power to break a sc diff
I should make a video going into the many different w series trans. And maybe I should put the trans I have in the red sc300 to the test. When it comes to the comparable w58 out of the mk4 and sc300, yes I to know guys who have made over 500tq on their w58s with no issues. However, I run into more guys that break them regularly at around 300tq. The reality is the w58 is not the ideal transmission to run for high HP applications. Does not make it a bad option? Of course not. Everything has a limit, and at the end the w58 wasn’t meant to be a strong trans. Let me ask you, what are your thoughts on the r154? Would you say the r154 is stronger than the triple synchro later version w58? I ‘m asking because I know a few guys making over 700tq on the r154(my self included) but I’ve never met anyone making that in a w58. What’s the highest w58 hp you know of? What are your thoughts?
1uz/v160 is solely for the FLEX lol, T56 is what I'd go with personally, brintech makes an adapter kit with a single disc for 14000aud but I would prefer Grannas if his kit works with the UZ
What are your thoughts on ge to gte conversions. Ive thought of just putting vvti pistons and a cam sensor in my ge, and then a gte trans but i dont know the practicality of that
Sad part about half these is the final gear ratio is horrible on half of them. A t-56 with the 0.5 Ratio 6th would be sweet. Could cruise around in an ls400 with a 3.26 rear end and oem diameter tires at 75mph and 1500rpm. Cruising 75mph with a CD009 howling at 2500rpm kinda sucks.
@@jurgoSTI Yup if you like to use the interstate and do 75, 80, 85, or 95 like on toll roads and all that. It gets to be very rough on nvh lol. Especially mpg.
Unfortunately no manuals where made for the y2k's, so now with the Cali ecu law I have to keep the 4 speed or register out of state. Shit sucks, but plan on an R154 at some point
Question, arent the autos that come in the Sc400 able to be built to withstand 1k hp? And in most cases, arent they faster than what you can shift anyways?
This should work. But I have learned that because the 1uz is shorter than the 2j, the location of the engine sits slightly more forward towards the front. It’s not much but it means that the drive shaft would have to be a little longer for the sc400 then let’s say the sc300. I can confirm this 100% works for the sc300.
I saw a kid put a w59 from a Tacoma in his sc400. I'm interested in the w59 seeing how it comes from a vehicle that is much newer. is there much of a difference between all the w series?
I don’t know much about the w59. I can tell you that all of the w series trans are known for being fragile. Maybe the w59 holds a little more power than the w58? How much more? Maybe it holds less? It really depends on your power goals if you plan to stay around 300-350hp you should be good.
my main goal is to get a manual transmission behind my stock sc400. seems almost identical to the w58 aside from gears and shifter location. is there a shifter you could recommend for the w58 Tacoma transmission in an sc400 or am I forced into fabricating one?
@@johncasillas6421 so for shifter if it’s like the w58 which I’m thinking it is, look into shifter housing extensions. Check if Drift motion can do this for you. Other option might be cube shifter www.driftmotion.com/R154-Shifter-Extension-MK4-SC300-p/dm583.htm
the differences between all the w series trans comes down to 2 things gearing and center plate. the truck trans (80s-90s pickup w55 which is also shared with the is300 , w56,w59) have much shorter gearing so would be best if also paired with a 3.27 diff ratio to work best. while the w58 has a taller ratio. bmw transmissions also work best with 3.27 diff ratio. really early w series trans had an aluminium center plate which was alot weaker than the steel center plate w series trans. marlin crawler has a page on their website (google is best way to find it) that breaks down the ratios between the trans options the same goes for the r series transmission the r154 was the car version but there is also a r155, the MA5 and the AR5 all based on the r transmisison the MA5 and the 6Spd ar5 are the same trans and again the biggest difference is the gearing
The cd009 gears chatter without a dual mass flywheel and none of the swap manufacturers offer this. You're stuck with their single mass flywheels and a loud gearbox. This is why I've opted for the ar5 I want a strong and smooth gearbox, I'd go cd009 if dmf was offered
Im curious if this would apply to an ls400 as Ik their body and boot location may be different idk, but as they mate to the 1uz, would anyone know if this applies for the ls400 as well as trans mount points and mounts
@@Edward3jr ngl you need a whole another video there's several ways to approach the situation depending on which transmission ar5 model you're working with. I've heard the one from the solstice is the best version as it is tripod. I have the truck version which I heard is more Stout but you need a remote shifter to make it work. And then there's the installation part which varies depending on which method you go with. I'm trying to keep it as simple as possible so I'm probably going to use the w58 parts list to go with it I already have a 1JZ bellhousing

Got a really good deal on an ar5, could you go into a little more detail on the tailhousing modification and what else would be needed?
Yes and I misspoke on this, I meant shifter housing and my understanding on this is that you can swap parts from an r154 to an ar5. This thread goes into a lot of details and is well worth the read. www.my.is/threads/comprehensive-ar5-swap-thread.566154/
Can you put a mustang tremec trans in a sc400. Let’s say the latest 2022 model
As long as you have an adapter plate/fly clutch option it’s 100% possible
Ford transit clutch pressure plate and friction plate cheap and stronger
I agree. we need more in depth information on the w series
Mazda transmission just relocation shifter for first top window cower little mod work perfectly
Love the video keep it up!
Thank you!
1uz/v160 is solely for the FLEX lol, T56 is what I'd go with personally, brintech makes an adapter kit with a single disc for 14000aud but I would prefer Grannas if his kit works with the UZ
Yes v160 is for the flex! T56 is an excellent choice!
@@Edward3jr v160 is the best yota gearbox for sure, but if you want one youre gonna have to pay a decent chunk of change.
@@RattyRatson I saw one on eBay for 11k 😞
@@Edward3jr that Supra tax! It is a great gearbox regardless.
@@Edward3jr just saw one for 29k 😳😳
Very good info

What are your thoughts on ge to gte conversions. Ive thought of just putting vvti pistons and a cam sensor in my ge, and then a gte trans but i dont know the practicality of that
I dont think this is necessary. You can make plenty of power on ge non vvti internals.
god damn i miss my trispokes.. some stupid kid ripped me off when i sold my 34 gt-t to him.
2500rpm at 75mph is bad to you?
@@jurgoSTI Yup if you like to use the interstate and do 75, 80, 85, or 95 like on toll roads and all that. It gets to be very rough on nvh lol. Especially mpg.
Unfortunately no manuals where made for the y2k's, so now with the Cali ecu law I have to keep the 4 speed or register out of state. Shit sucks, but plan on an R154 at some point
Dammit that’s terrible
thank god i don’t live in such a garbage state
@@pushhrodd01 garbage state is subjective. Car mod laws are the worst, but I still love it here
Pay for a hot smog lol
Mazda and Ford Sierra use the same transmission
Question, arent the autos that come in the Sc400 able to be built to withstand 1k hp? And in most cases, arent they faster than what you can shift anyways?
To be honest I’m not sure about that…
Lol those autos blow around 400 lb/ft.
@@vicburt6001 Im not talking stock, Im talking about rebuilt.
Is this applicable to the ls400?
Why not try a tremec Mt adapter?
Tremec is good!
Ed have you known anyone to get the 1uzfe head and valves done? What kind of torq and hp was seen?
This is a good question, I’m not sure what hp have been seen na.
W58’s cost as much as a used r154 lol but people taxing transmission swaps now
question! so if i have a non tripod r154 and use a mk3 supra front driveshaft with my sc400 rear it will all bolt up without further modification??
This should work. But I have learned that because the 1uz is shorter than the 2j, the location of the engine sits slightly more forward towards the front. It’s not much but it means that the drive shaft would have to be a little longer for the sc400 then let’s say the sc300. I can confirm this 100% works for the sc300.
@@Edward3jr dope thank you! picking up a r154 and driveshaft for 1k 😳 good deal or nah?
@@joshg.9390 that’s a really good deal! Let me know if you have any questions!
W58 it doesn't need an Adapter plate?
Yes if you’re not going to use a w58 to uz bell housing
Other option might be cube shifter www.driftmotion.com/R154-Shifter-Extension-MK4-SC300-p/dm583.htm
the differences between all the w series trans comes down to 2 things gearing and center plate. the truck trans (80s-90s pickup w55 which is also shared with the is300 , w56,w59) have much shorter gearing so would be best if also paired with a 3.27 diff ratio to work best. while the w58 has a taller ratio. bmw transmissions also work best with 3.27 diff ratio. really early w series trans had an aluminium center plate which was alot weaker than the steel center plate w series trans. marlin crawler has a page on their website (google is best way to find it) that breaks down the ratios between the trans options the same goes for the r series transmission the r154 was the car version but there is also a r155, the MA5 and the AR5 all based on the r transmisison the MA5 and the 6Spd ar5 are the same trans and again the biggest difference is the gearing
will these work for ls400 too?
Yes just drive shaft will be different
@@Edward3jr ty you're a legend! :)
What is gearbox rwd fur 3sget
Not sure to be honest…
The cd009 gears chatter without a dual mass flywheel and none of the swap manufacturers offer this. You're stuck with their single mass flywheels and a loud gearbox. This is why I've opted for the ar5 I want a strong and smooth gearbox, I'd go cd009 if dmf was offered
Great video Ed! I have a few w58s for sale on FB marketplace and eBay!
I may have a few buyers I can send your way!
Im curious if this would apply to an ls400 as Ik their body and boot location may be different idk, but as they mate to the 1uz, would anyone know if this applies for the ls400 as well as trans mount points and mounts
Trans and Adapter kits will work, you’ll have to find drive shaft and crossmember, I believe there are companies that make both for the ls400
what about a gs400?
The trans should bolt up the same, but driveshaft and crossmembers will be different
No mention of aisin ar5?
When I talked about the r154 I brought up the ar5. I Did not go into the details of it, but I absolutely mentioned it.
@@Edward3jrmy bad bro. i just got an art and in process of putting parts together for the swap 🤙
@@phernandez2585 I should have gone more into details on it.
@@phernandez2585 exactly why I did not want to get into it. Felt like it would take longer to really dive into. Where as the r154 was much easier to talk about.
