Really appreciate your review!!! In fact, the most thorough review for both models. I'm researching/reviewing the Edifier Stax S3 and the Momentum 4. Your review and attention to Audio Detail has helped me to go with this model. Thank You, Aaron, your review process and attention to audio detail is top notch! Out of curiosity, what is your opinion/review of the Sennheiser Momentum 4?
Glad you think so - it's something I strive for each video. 😁 ... The Senn is a completely different category of headphone, specializing in NC, mod-cons, etc. The Edifier is all about wireless (and wired) listening pleasure and comfort. Just my 2 cents. Again, thank you for watching... Hope you come back for new content every week 🤙
Yes you do put a lot of effort in to your videos and it's much appreciated. I'm not sure if I'm going to hang out next to a highway trying to talk to someone with my 4 hundred dollar headphones but if I do at least I know what to expect. Right! Thank you Aaron again. 💯👍🇺🇸
OK for music, they're a strange kettle of fish, I don't know if it's because I cannot change the profile of the headphone because I am not using the app, but for movies, I can say these are stellar. The bass has to be some of the most accurate bass I have heard in a long time, it's not sub deep but that adds to the accuracy and weight. The speed it is delivered at is something I have never experienced in a headphone before (welcome to planar), this only adds to some of the most exciting movie watching i have had with headphones. They are not fatiguing, the highs are very well handled, mids are tight but can sound a little too nasal for me (closed cans exhibit this), lows are extremely well controlled and as said before, whilst not sub low, the speed makes up for this in the best delivered bass enabling me to hear things with greater reveals. Now to the cons, they're comfortable BUT not for larger ears, I find when in bed, if my head position is not perfect, you can apply pressure on parts of the headphone which becomes noticeable. I have Phillips Fidelio X1 and X2, passed on the X3 as I read there seems to be too much compression which music. Have Senhiesser HD600 6XX and they're my mixing cans. I for some reason prefer the bass on the Edifiers because they're so fast. Filedo gets a little bloated but they're extremely low sub, Senns accurate but you need a decent amp to power. For the price I paid, the Edifiers are stellar, I only got them for movies and I can say they're perfect. Music is a different kettle of fish and I cannot quite put my finger on it, I may try wired connection on my HPA where I use my other cans. I think the Edifiers with a bit of EQuing, would make the cheapest BT best cans around by far.
I'm from the Commonwealth too (Malaysia), and even though I know it's an old phrase, I've never heard anyone use it there. When I hear interesting sayings I tend to get curious where they're used the most.
@@gearupaaron I put my own twist on it as it's always "different kettle of fish", I adapted it to ":strange kettle of fish" but it has the same intent. Now for the headphones, I almost bought another pair of planar last night, I wanted something more comfortable, but for some reason, could not be convinced that the Hifiman series was worth the investment, specifically the Sundara and the SE. All this whilst I was watching Southland Tales, not a movie for everyone but it's a hell of a ride. Now this movie has some serious weight when it comes to sound, interestingly it shows what the S3 are capable of, there is a piece of music that comes up that is drumming, tap tap tap dab tap, you get the idea, but the drums get muddy and I am wondering if these cans are capable of complex details. So I in the process of watching the movie, am researching all these other alternative Planars, reading reviews etc etc and come to the conclusion that the reason the drums lose their clarity is due to BT and non APTX of the LG TV. The nVidia Shield has APTX but I don't want to have to change between the 2 streaming options as Shield's is hidden behind many many menus. So to understand the dynamics of S3, some thunder appears in the movie, and it conveys the sound field in such a way that I realized the ultimate flaw of these head phones is the BT application. The beauty is you can use them as wired, which I intend to test today. That thunderstorm hit so hard and accurate, that it wasn't exhibiting lower frequencies that ruined the mid range, something you would expect with a thunderstorm. This brings me back to the Hifiman, some do not go as low or as high as the S3, so I would have been wasting my money on something I had that was already better. One more thing I wanted to touch on, there was too much clamping force on my S3s, so what I did was extend the ear cups at maximum length, then bend the metal banding a few times, carefully holding only the metal, so now I have a much more comfortable clamping pressure. I did the same with my HD600s/6XXs. I love the S3s and I think it maybe a gateway drug, BUT I may have the high I want right in front of me, I just need to test with wired 1st to rule out any issues with streaming compression. I just hope that using this as a wired can, eliminates anything I may have experienced as a negative.
Hi, I can't decide which to pick between the ATH-M50XBT2 and the Edifier S3, they both have similar features that I need. I'm looking for a pair of headphone with a decent mic quality that I can use for music, movies and phone calls on the go, and when I get home I can use it wired or low latency for pc gaming. Could you recommend me a pair, please? Other headphones are also welcome.
Two things to add to this fantastic review. 1. V-MODA has superior build quality. Unless your careless or supremely hard on your gear the V-moda’s will last a long time. Also their memory foam ear pads are very nice and at $30.00 2. V-MODA has a very good replacement warranty for their headphones. Are they second coming of the headphone world? No. But they’re well built, have a great warranty and sound good.
WTF? I don't know why Stax Spirit s3 costs $400 in many west countries! In Russia it costs around $190, for this price it's a beast with near IDEAL Harmann curve
Ohhhh superb video !!! Awesome job man !! I really appreciate ! I want to buy the s3, but i fear that i will lack of bass. Many complaints by people who own s3. If you raise the bass in the EQ (amazo music), do they will deliver more bass without distortion? If you compare the s3 with the xm5 or bose qc45, which one is better?
These are 50% off where I live, I maybe able to get them for as low as 230 AUD which is around 150 USD. 80 hours playtime before needing a charge at 90 mins for full charge, well it's a no brainer for me.
@@gearupaaron Can't say right now as I want to get a pair, waiting on seller to get back to me as I have an offer on and there is limited supply, I will know in a day or 2 then link.
Interesting that the Crossfade 3s sound worse wired (that was not the case for the Crossfade 2s). EDIT: I bought the Crossfade 3s and they sound better wired than wireless. You just need a good DAC/Amp. I plugged them into a Fosi Audio DS1 and their sound was actually improved vs. wireless. Thanks anyway for your thoughts and time 👍🏼
I was just thinking the exact same thing the other day - these 2 would make a perfect comparo. My take is that for the money, the 400SE is close on SQ, but if you want wireless portability above all (which is what the V-MODA and S3 are all about), the Edifier nails it. I just wish it was maybe $100 or so cheaper.
Yeah, I've heard cases of varying degrees of white noise. Mine intermittently does it when there is no media playing (but still connected to the device). When the device goes to sleep, the hissing stops. Thanks for sharing your experience - bummer you had to return it 😕
