    Thanks Brendon. Wow has it been that long and I am still wanting to convert my 1 hz. Might wait til I have bought a big shed to house my fleet and keep the expletives muffled. But If i find a suitable FTE in a year or so then I might just try it. Cheers Pete

    Nice video mate. Heaps of good info. I just finished a 1hdt swap into my 105, thought alot about an fte but price wise i got a fully rebuilt hdt with all hi performance internals and a full rotating assy balance for the same price as an fte imports so i chose that path plus i have a bit of a love affair with the 12valves. But i hope im as happy as you in 3 years time. Cheers

      Yeah I thought seriously about FTE in my 80 but my 1HDT is running 200hp on the original motor with 480k. An FTE swap with be over 20 grand for me with a stock motor cause I cant do the work myself. Where as a full rebuild on my 1HDT with full internal work and headwork/arp, headstuds, gturbo, custom manofold, 12mm pump and injectors to match will cost me 10 grand less and with kind of work some guys have been pushing 1HDTs up to 300HP. Mine is a tourer and will never run that sort of tune but itd be built for it. It was a no brainer for me. FTE is good but I cant justify the difference of 10 grand for a stock FTE not including turbo etc, and valve body kits for the 100 series auto to go with it. And thats not even taking into consideration the gremlins that go with conversions no matter how "straight bolt in" people say they are. Not to mention last time I was in north QLD a bloke drowned his FTE and fried the ECU. Got it back on the road but it was never the same. He eventually sold it because it had endless problems after that.

      Nothing wrong with 12 valves mate, my old mans HD-T shocked many people after a little tune on just the pump. Just keep an eye on the rod bearings with those.

    Nice recap! I'm doing the same conversion very soon. I had a sloppy smokey 1HDT with bad compression.
    Did you make the loom for the 1HDFTE yourself or did you have it made for you?
    I'm based in Europe and I'm not overly excited about sending both my looms to the other side of the planet just to make this conversion work.

      The box behind the fz is the h151 same as the turbo diesel model. You'll just require the diesel bellhousing to suit which could be a bit challenging.

    Hey I was wondering what difference in fuel economy you got switching from the FT to FTE? I have an 80 series with an FT and was considering swapping to an FTE...

    • @hiteck007
      @hiteck007 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Don't do it mate. I got the FT & my mate that has the FTE & has a lot more done to his & my rig ate his easily & what's more is mine is auto & his is manual. Fuel economy is basically the same between them on a trip.The FT is so much easier to work on compared to the other one. Also why my FT eats the FTE with its the massive turbo lag where as mine has not much at all and my power comes in a lot lower & longer. Oh and electronic fuel injection can't handle bad fuel like the mechanical pumps can. The FT will always get you home even if all battery power is lost as I found out one day when my dads rig had a wire fire. I ran a bypass, got it started & drove it home with no electrical system operational, yes the auto wasn't happy without a computer controlling it but it will still drive, you just goto treat it like a manual valve body because no shift computer.

  • @hiteck007
    @hiteck007 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hay Brendo, I would have rebuilt the HD-T. You only had to deck the block & head to get them flat again. I done that to one of my motors after a thermostat failure in the middle of no where. It was an all alloy motor so the whole thing warped & was a write off until I did that, The machine works was about a grand, a rebore to 30 thou over, deck block & head, valve regrind, the rest I did myself. The engine rebuild was about $1700 for that 4 cylinder, it surely can't be that much more for a 6 cylinder for machine work to square it all back up.

    • @brendonv101
      @brendonv101  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did weigh up that option at the time but I didn't want the vehicle off the road long so I went with the FTE as it makes much nicer, cleaner power. No soot with much better delivery than a HDT ever could. My old HDT was making good power but the FTE just demolished it in every way.

      The 1hd fte is indeed spruiked as the holy grail of diesel 4x4 touring engines and for good reason too because in all honesty it probably is (coming from a guy who owns a gu 3 td42ti).
      But, the td42 is an absolute work horse in its own right and when modded correctly you can get decent power out of it whilst still being extremely reliable..
      If you're not thrashing a td42 and service it regularly, you can easily notch up over 800 thou k's.
      I've seen bogged td42s which have been left underwater for days which then started and ran fine after a bit of road side TLC - that is the definition of reliability if you ask me..
      In the end though it's all splitting hairs a bit.. 90% of, if not more of the trails and shit you will encounter in a 4x4 can be done in any bog stock 4x4 so long as you have a winch.. people were crossing the Simpson half century ago with far less than we have today..

  • @trickster8635

    1hd-t pulls harder than FTE under 2100rpm, when the FTE takes advantage of it's 24 valves and pulls ahead. Max torque of the FTE is greater, but not until 2100 to 2400 rpm. The 12 valve will crawl better in gnarly slow lugging, whereas the FTE likes to breath.

    • @brendonv101
      @brendonv101  ปีที่แล้ว

      In stock form that may be true but once tuned with a new turbo the FTE can make greater low end torque than the 1HDT.

      The later series hz blocks as well as FTE blocks have a crank angle sensor. Other then that they're pretty much the same.
      Heads between hz-hdt and ft/FTE are different though. Not to mention fuel pumps.
