- Join us today as we walk the path to a mass rock, then visit the graveyard close by.
A story of the area about a Priest murdered during the Penal Laws in Ireland.
Under the Penal Laws, the Catholics could not hold commission in the army, enter a profession, or own a horse worth more than five pounds. Catholics could not possess weaponry and arms, could not study law or medicine, and could not speak or read Gaelic or play Irish music
The Mass Rock
A Mass Rock can be seen in the Park here in Murrintown and also a Mass path. The ferns grow all around the park but none grow on this path.
A priest said Mass there during the Penal Times. The steps leading to the rock and the rock itself, where he said Mass, can be seen still. When discovered he hid under a nearby bridge but he coughed and drew the sodiers attention to himself and they routed him out with blood hounds and shot him. The blood stains are still on the stones under this bridge which is now called the Bloody Bridge.
An old Penal Chapel beside the present school was burned in the time of Cromwell. The lane leading to it is called the "Poundy Lane" A heap of stones marking its site remains to this day.
On the Mass path leading to the rock altar it is said no fern has ever grown, though they grow all over the park. It is always smooth and green

Penal Laws, laws passed against Roman Catholics in Britain and Ireland after the Reformation that penalized the practice of the Roman Catholic religion and imposed civil disabilities on Catholics. Various acts passed in the 16th and 17th centuries prescribed fines and imprisonment for participation in Catholic worship and severe penalties, including death, for Catholic priests who practiced their ministry in Britain or Ireland. Other laws barred Catholics from voting, holding public office, owning land, bringing religious items from Rome into Britain, publishing or selling Catholic primers, or teaching.
Sporadically enforced in the 17th century and largely ignored in the 18th, the Penal Laws were almost completely nullified by the Roman Catholic Relief Act (1791), the Catholic Emancipation Act (1829), the Roman Catholic Charities Act (1832), and the Roman Catholic Relief Act (1926). such a fascinating time to misunderstand!

Thank you for braving the weather to bring this interesting but sad story. Such a beautiful place to have so much sadness . Each religion teaches love one another but seems to spend most of their time being nasty to those who don't do exactly as they do. I'm pagan but if folk are nice to me I'll be nice to them and I'll celebrate anything with anyone as long as it brings happiness oh and cake 😅 thank you for always going above and beyond to bring us the best . Once again Sue, you have inspired me to research history - a passion of mine. The Earldom of Granard was established in 1684, the first being Arthur Forbes who was a Lieutenant General in the army and after the Restoration was Lord Justice of Ireland.
The title stayed in the family and the 7th Earl of Granard, George Arthur Hastings Forbes, erected the monument to his faithful man in service.
The title is still active today, with Peter Arthur Edward Hastings Forbes currently the Earl.

I am with you Sue in that it shouldn't matter what religion you follow. As for the atrocities the English have committed makes the English part of me is very sad and embarrassed. The Irish part of me is proud and holds my head high.
Don’t believe it, Oliver Cromwell was an English republican, he attacked the English pale in Ireland which was English catholic coloniser. It was part of the English civil war so was English on both sides. When the catholics English lost they where disempowered and sent outside the pale, that is where the term going beyond the pale comes from.
Ahh yes beyond the pale, so many of our churches and castles were burned down too, horrible history but it is history

Years ago I lived on a farm called broughton's tower ,in our cellar there was a tunnel which led to priest holes ,the priest hid there from Cromwell and his soldiers xx

The priests in England suffered the same thing and were martyred for their faith. 40 saints in the North of England
murdered. I have visited priest hidey holes. Really difficult to see how they survived at all. Enjoyed the walk but so sad.

I was born into the Church of England, but since I have been old enough to understand I have never held with the way that Catholics were treated. Lets be honest, C of E was only created so that henry VIII did not have to ask the pope when he wanted to divorce. Ever since my Mother passed away in 2002 I have felt very drawn towards the Catholic faith, indeed I have many things ie Catholic prayer books, pictures of Mary, and numerous crosses and small statues. So my belief is that although I am C of E, the Ctholic faith is the true religion. god bless you both x
Thanks Barry, I'm open to every Religion and I truly believe its what is in our hearts that matter the most. Raised a Catholic I believe in God but I also believe that everything has a spirit. Trees, earth, flowers etc now I'd only everyone can accept everyone's beliefs the world would be a better place

Thanks for this post, I hope you don't mind me suggesting this. I'm m up in Belfast. If the Priest is said to be haunting the area, would the locals not have a novena of Masses offered for this Priest ?
They actually still do a pattern mass there every year but honestly some of that story is probably folklore
Interesting history and walkthrough. That spikey plant with yellow flowers is called Gorse.
Some fool introduced it to New Zealand (where I am from) thinking that it will make good pasture dividing hedges instead of building fences, now it's an invasive weed growing throughout NZ.
Ahh yrs that's is Gorse gosh I could not remember but I do remember the flowers smelling like bananas, yes it's a terrible plant

Beautiful walking tour Sue and GV. I believe you when you say that the
cemetery is well kept up, usually. There is a National cemetery close
to my home, half of my family is buried there. The grounds crew
stop mowing the grounds, and picking up the graves on November 1st. They start up again in the spring
when the grass starts growing again.
That is my understanding anyway.
Probably the grounds crew in that cemetery have the same mindset.
The story is very sad. You are right, it does not matter what religion a person follows, what matters is,
WHAT IS IN THAT PERSONS HEART!

I think if the stones are a rusty red, it sounds like maybe there's some iron ore in the rocks and soil, which turns that rusty red color in water, etc. Anyone else know anything? SOOOO beautiful this Mass rock area.

Hi, no real reason, after the church becomes abandoned people could be buried there, I did read that it is usually more notable people inside the church but I don't think so, maybe loyal local people to the church were able to go inside to be buried too

Henry and Cromwell weren't nice with the Welsh either! We were banned from speaking and learning our language. Did this happen in Ireland too Sue? This nice little graveyard seems to have a little history, with the tribute for the servant and the 1700s stone. The Earl is a relative of the heiress, and her mausoleum, who you featured in your previous vlog. He may be entombed under the church there! Hope your toes didn't get too wrinkled in the wet, lol. Hi Deb, when I researched that servant and Granard that came up but I questioned if it was right as there 4 hours away there was also Granard in Wexford which this graveyard is located so I didn't refer to it but it may have well been the same, how crazy is that, like we went full circle. How lovely he was remembered like this. I'm not sure about the Irish language, oh he had his hand stuck into everyone and their belief and their language too, interesting history all be it terrible

Sue, this was a very interesting video thank you so much for sharing. Question I would have as a historian what happened to all of cromwell's soldiers who killed all those people after he was deposed? I'm sure the same brutality they showed was probably shown to them too. I know two wrongs don't make a right, but it's amazing how arrogant people can be thinking it's never going to happen to them. Again thank you for this interesting video.

@@SerenitySueGraveyards well you inspire me to look that answer up. Apparently Charles the second had a gentleman take care of them by sending them out to the front between Spain and Portugal through out the Commonwealth. So he ended up getting rid of a lot of the soldiers without having to worry about if they switch sides again. He even had him on pension for a little bit, then got rid of them all off the pension. So some of them either died of starvation in Portugal or bullets.
