      +Chrisfix !!! Please help me find the LEDs, you got for $5.00!! Walmart and O'Reilly auto parts dont have them.. They sell Sylvania bulbs... They aren't as bright as the bulbs you put on your truck... I want the eye challenged law enforcement to see my plates so they won't stop me... Pretty pretty pretty please...?????? I actually like that you’re using LEDs for your car because one, they last longer than incandescent or halogens, and second, they draw less power.
    One thing to keep in mind is that because of the difference in load that LED bulbs take compared to either of the other two I mentioned, you might need to do more for your turn signals, and I speak from experience. When I was shopping at an auto parts store, I saw that one of the aftermarket accessories they sold were load resistors. I was curious about that and checked out the description on the packaging, and they’re meant to be attached to the same line as turn signals to take the kind of load required so the turn signal relay doesn’t act like there’s either no bulb in a certain socket or that a bulb burned out. I bought a set immediately with the LEDs so that I wouldn’t have to take an extra trip, and a test with the LED bulbs alone showed that I was right to get the resistors.
    For a while, after installing both the LEDs and the resistors, everything worked great until eventually the turn signal relay started acting up. The turn signals would turn on, but not blink at all unless the hazard flasher switch was used. After checking the fuses and doing some research, I determined that it was indeed the relay that had a problem. So after doing more research and pulling out the relay, I showed it to an employee at an auto parts store and he immediately led me to where the part was, and I picked out one that was actually compatible with LED bulbs. After installing it, I dared to try it out without the load resistors. Thankfully it actually worked, which meant that I could remove the resistors and save them for when I installed LEDs in one of my family’s other vehicles. The wiring in the car was resealed afterwards.
    So anyway, I told that story to bring up this point: If you’re going to use LEDs on your turn signals, whether or not the brake lights also function as the turn signal lights, make sure you get the necessary accessories in case they don’t work properly at first. Also, based on how confident you are about working on your own car, if said accessories are required, you can either add resistors to the wiring, which is easy enough, or you can leave the wiring alone and do research on your vehicle to find where the relay is and what model range it is before looking for the LED-compatible equivalent, assuming it exists.
    Other areas with a bulb most likely won’t need such modifications because all they do is direct current through a circuit without interruption (headlights, fog lights, brakes if they’re not attached to a turn signal, map lights, etc.).

    Your too cool, I was going to suggest the "dielectric grease" but you have things under control. I live in very wet condition country, K Falls Oregon, and everything gets greased with this stuff, it keeps the water out and won't eat up rubber items. It also helps with my window repairs and was my industrial secret until now.
    I had no idea LED's would be available, Thanks for the "Heads Up" it will save more than just a few dollars. The Police use tail and license plate lights out, as a "Probable Cause" for pull overs out here, and this makes me so happy. Kudos Chris, your really covering ground that I as a retired ASE Master Mechanic had no idea existed. Your videos make me look good, and that helps me make $, and it helps keep my customers coming back. Thanks again ChrisFix.

    In my car lots of interior and some exterior lights use this same kind of light bulb, so I also got a pack of these from eBay really cheap (directly from Hong Kong, not local re-sellers who 10x the price).
    I had to get Canbus error-free ones, they simply have resistor added.
    The only different light bulb was passenger dome light, it was elongated shape bulb, but that can also be found in form of LED, so I replaced that too.
    Cool thing is that there is many shapes and kinds of these light bulbs that will all fit this socket. So if there is more room in the light housing, you can fit a longer or wider bulb that will be even brighter. Or one that emits lights in all directions, not just one.
    Even parking/side lights are using this kind of bulb in my car so replacing them gives nice white light instead of yellowish one.

    I did this on my Chevy S10 last month. I was surprised a bit at the condition of the bulbs. The inside of them were black, but managed to put out a minimum amount of light. I switched the bulbs out for a pair of Sylvania LED mini bulbs and they really light up my license plate. Along with the license plate bulbs, I replaced most of the bulbs on my truck with LEDs. That was all for the extra safety measure because LEDs are brighter and you don't have to change them as often.

  • @scorpian8867

    As for the polarization on LEDs (the reason it's possible to put them in backward), I've found that it helps to look at the leads and wires before installing. The black wire is pretty much guaranteed to be ground on anything lighting related, so make sure the negative lead is on the same side as it. On most bulbs, the positive lead will be a little bit thinner, and usually slightly longer.
    Oh, and compare bulb sizes BEFORE installing them. I ended up having to sand off the top SMD on my set before I could fit them in my license plate housings, all because I didn't bother to check on dimensions. The fact that it didn't destroy them and that they're still working to this day continues to baffle me.

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Roddy Thanks for the tips John! It was interesting that leds could be put in backwards. I will check out to see if one lead of the bulb is thinner!

    Hey,
    nice upgrade, and very cheap also.
    Unfortunately by law we are not allowed to change the original bulb to an LED in Germany. We have to replace the whole socket with built in LEDs. This socket has to be tested and certified in relation to the car type also. Of course it's ten times more expensive than a single LED.
    You're glad to be in the United States^^

      You dont have to, its fine, your car just thinks its running on almost died incadescent bulbs, because LEDs consume much less current.

    I tryed that a few times, but apparenty, you need to also use some transistors so that the LEDs don't burn out prematurly. is that a myth or was I using cheap LEDs? (i bought them from China)

    Chris question is the a fuse for License plate light for a 2010 Nissan Sentra? Second question is their a fuse for the same car for the 3rd brake light?

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marvin Brunson Yes, there is a fuse for every electric piece on a car. You need fuses to prevent fires and damage to wiring and electronics. Check out your owners manual. Many times the smaller lights are grouped together on one fuse.

    I just replaced out my lights from Halogens to LEDs and I had to replace out the wiring harness for both my license plate light sockets since the old ones where the bulb are held is dry-rotted and cracked over time. They were actually the original factory ones.
    If anyone drives a second gen Dodge pickup, check your sockets, and if they are cracked, brittle, and dry-rotted, replace them out, not worth saving the old ones.

    I put cheap LEDs on my tag lights, and only 3 years later, the left one went out, and the right one had some bad diodes. I later put Sylvania LEDs, and they're much brighter.

    what is your opinion on using light bulb grease , when installing Led lamps compared to incadeseant bulbs

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Cullinan I personally never use it unless I have a problem with water getting into the connection. If you have lights that are going to be submerged (boat trailer) then go for it. Otherwise, I dont use it. It doesnt matter LED vs incandescent because the main function is to keep water out.

    Hey Chris I was wondering what brand and model touch screen head unit that has Bluetooth and that can make calls do be best for a Honda cr-v 2003 make?

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fred Moore Hey Fred. I actually dont know too much about which one is best. In a month I will be installing and doing a video review on a Android powered touch screen head unit. I dont know what to expect but after I install it and play around with it a little, I can let you know what I think. In all honsety, if you can get a factory touch screen head unit that comes with your model, that is almost always going to be the best setup, but I will keep you posted on the aftermarket ones soon!

    Please chris you need to mention that with newer cars you will need CANBUS ready error free LEDs... otherwise they will not work correctly :)

    • @chrisfix
      @chrisfix  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Dario Pierleoni Thanks Dario. I forgot about Euro cars... Many European vehicles such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Range Rover, Jaguar and many more use a CAN-bus (controller area network) systems that monitors the activity of lights on the vehicle to detect if they are operating or not. LEDs have such low draw that the system thinks it is a burnt out bulb.

  • @riviol87
    @riviol87 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are those LEDs still working? I have had a bad experience with cheap LEDs (though expensive than 65cent/bulb). They burnout after 4 to 7 months. I got so tired of replacing them that I spent 5 times the amount on an Osram pair of T10 W5W LEDs which come with company backed warranty. Another issue with these cheap LEDs is the inconsistent power consumption. In most cases the wattage is way off than the one mentioned.

  • @trulymeparker
    @trulymeparker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Definitely better for dashboards but don't use these in dashboard because they only shine one direction so you get only spots of the display lit up. Buy the 360 degree leds that have leds the whole way around on them.

  • @CrimsonHawk09

      Cody Nicholson Not sure if you wanna check, but usually older fords below 2000 (I think) you can can just swap lights on the A/C, this includes mazda as they are similar along with other brands. Mine have to be soldered which is a PIA ='(

    How do I figure out what size LED light bulb to get ?

  • @zx8401ztv
    @zx8401ztv 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow what a difference :-)), i was thinking about led polarity but figured they had included 4 diodes to make the bulb bidirectional, they didnt but those bulbs are cheap so who cares :-))
    Some older cars use those type of glass bulb for dashboard illumination/indicators and such, i bet those leds would make the dash look crisp :-)
