Just changed my transmission fluid and filter by following this video. At first, after buying all the things I needed I just sat there for an hour thinking of how much I was regretting this, and that I could have just paid someone to do it. Then I was under the car dreading the mess of transmission fluid but it wasn’t that bad. Pan wasn’t cooperating so I thought that all this for nothing, but eventually it gave out. Gasket was fused onto the pan, factory filter, cleaning was the part I hated the most but at the end there was a clean pan, new filter, all I had to do was cross the finish line and.... I did! Dammit, Chris, you didn’t have to make look so easy but thank you so much 🙏

I want to do this on my Ranger as well. It's been changed several times by a shop over the years, but they want $180 to do it these days. I'm guessing this will save at least $120.
I replaced the transmission fluid on my 2006 Hyundai Tiburon at 110k miles (121k now). At that point I only owned the car for around 6k miles, and was very unimpressed with the sport shifter, taking 2-3 seconds to shift between gears, so I decided to replace the fluid. Holy hell what a difference! the fresh fluid dropped my shifting times from 2-3 seconds all the way down to .25-.5 seconds! best thing I ever did for that car!
Call of Drewski i had that happen when i was replacing injectors for my car. I was having a hard time getting the last one in and then i found out the O-ring never went out with the old injector
I had a problem taking the o- ring out of my 2007 Pontiac. Grand Prix, I tore it a little bit but I decided to leave it in there and not put a new o-ring in and just put in the filter. My o-ring was SUPER HARD to come out.
Fabulous video! I followed your 5 step process and had total success! My truck is 2005 Ford Ranger and I didn't need a universal socket adapter because there was clearance for all 18 bolts. My filter did not have the "spout" on one side, but the new part was identical to the old one. The truck seemed to shift EASIER compared to before! The fluid removed was about 3.5 quarts and the color was similar to your middle variety...translucent brown with slight pink and no metal specks. The metal pan had a little metal on the magnet, but not much. Thank you Chris!...for saving me some $$$!

I just found this channel this week and I have to say, this is probably the best channel TH-cam has ever had. I grew up in a house full of gear heads, and I started turning wrenches before I can even remember, but honestly I've learned more than a few new things watching these videos. great tutorials chris! and thanks.. whoever does this to their vehicle is smart because you know youre doing the job right as no mechanic is going to follow all these steps! just make sure you have loads and i mean LOADS of dirty rags and obviously clean rags because you WILL need them and trust have two plastic blue tarps underneath to catch all the drips as they spill everywhere. but you get immense satisfaction in knowing you did the job right and you will certainly feel the transmission come alive and drive like a dream. Thanks to this video I was able to change my Transmission Fluid for the first time. First oil change now transmission fluid. Hoping to do more maintenance to my car with the help of all your videos.
Great video Chris. One suggestion is to install a drain plug to make future draining a breeze. Then you can drain it regularly, measure the amount drained, and refill. It would only take a few minutes and be nearly mess-free.

Wow, Chris..thank you! I'm 75 & I'm in the process of collecting info & parts to do this ATF/filter change. I know I can do this, but must prepare & understand all 5 steps you so beautifully described. I'm stoked.
You can reduce fluid mess by using a vacuum pump and pumping out most of the fluid in the pan through the Transmission dipstick tube. Once you get all you can, let it sit for a bit to drip into the pan some more and try one last time to get any remaining bit. Then, when you drop down the pan you will have very little fluid left in the pan and it will not spill everywhere. This will save you a lot of cleaning.
This is an excellent description of how to do it. I am older and will not use ramps. I go to my competent mechanic, have him put the car on the lift and now I give the reason that I don't do the change. While the car is on the lift, I do what the insurance company doesn't want the customer to do. I have a list of inspection items, lubrication items (oh yes, you lubricate seals under the car or eventually have a big repair problem vs. a few bucks for lubricant). The tires are turned and inspected. I am inspecting every component. Your dealer mechanic and even your trusty local guy will not the same inspection that you want to do. It would be a PITA to do this with just ramps in the driveway. And remember. When you do city driving, short hops, start and stops, you are working the transmission much harder than driving on the open road. If your manual says change the fluid every 40,000 miles and you are highway driving the average mileage, that is every 2-3 years. You have about the same time interval with hard, in city, lower mileage driving.
Thanks for the video! My pan was leaking and dealer wanted 400 to fix it. Took me 3 hours and I stripped a torx bolt that holds the filter, but you saved me 250 dollars and I am proud to say I did it myself!
Suggestion: Instead of making a huge mess with the oil dripping out of the pan, use suction pump to remove most of the fluid from the dipstick hole. Stick your plastic tube into the dipstick hole and start your suction pump. Remove most of your fluid that way. After that remove your entire pan without any fluid dripping. There will be very small amount of fluid remaining.
Hey could you do a video on how to change cvt fluid. They're tons of automatic transmission fluid change videos but nobody really ever talks about cvt transmissions say like my 2009 nissan altima has. I read that the process is similar but it has additional places to drain it from so I was just wondering if you could grace folks like me with a video for the cvt. Thanks.
Wow, I'm double impressed. The first thing is that in the manual they mention the change of the transmission oil and the second that you can check and fill up your transmission oil from the hub. On the bmw's that's impossible. Bmw tells the owners the transmission oil holds the entire life of the car 😂. 150'000 km is their definition of lifetime 🤷🏿♂️
The best tip of this video is to use a tarp. It's pretty much guaranteed that you will spill some, if not a lot, of fluid on the ground if you're vehicle has a pan to drop like this one. So depending on where youre doing it that could be bad. First time I did this I made a big mess in my work parking lot . It's also hard to funnel the old fluid back into a container, as chris demonstrated. But thats normal. Its not easy. Use a tarp trust me
Funneling large amounts of fluid in these cases requires patience and awareness. As the fluid travels it pushes air out, pouring too fast causes these air bubbles to push some fluid out, like when he poured into the container in the box. It takes a slow steady process with constant pauses.

Hey Chris, Awesome video as always, just one suggestion? You reach a lot of people and people listen to you. If you could advise on your video that everyone out there to safely dispose of used oil and liquids that would be awesome. I think it's something like 10,000 litres of fresh water that is contaminated from just the 4 litre oil of one change being thrown in the trash or 'buried in the back yard' or dumped in a lake.. I'm in nz and unfortunately you can't usually take used oil back to the shop where you bought it but it's pretty cheap or free to take to the local dump. Cheers Chris, legend.

I just did this to my ‘01 Olds Silhouette yesterday. Satisfying upon completion, but my filter was not that easy to do. No bolt to hold in or remove he filter. It just seats in using a metal ring. The old filter actually broke off removing it. I thought I broke my transmission lol. But I got some advice from an Oldsmobile master tech who said that it was fine as long as I could get the rest of the filter out, which I did. A job well for. Took 3.5 hours though. On the plus side, that knowledge will be great for later next time I change the filter, and if I ever encounter another vehicles come with the same type of filter installation.
ChrisFix I do it to all my trucks and cars. Make sure rust is cleaned with wire brush and clean underneath to get any dirt off and make sure it is 65 degrees out. It's quite simple. Wear gloves and any clothes you don't care if ruined.
The Robot Sniper make sure to use the thickest rubberized undercoating you can find and make sure to cover everything even wires and brake lines and connectors!

@@chrisfix The automatics in that generation Civic have an internal filter as in the transmission must be removed and taken apart to get to it. Jonathan, if you read this, install a transmission oil cooler, specially if you live in a hot climate or drive uphill quite a bit. Those BMXA transmissions are really shoddy, they overheat and fail easily. (source: I own a 2004 Civic DX - I have looked into it) You could also put in an inline filter, like a Magnefine, and change it every time you change the AT oil. I'm guessing it's the next best thing concerning filter media replacement.

I have been trying things since several years ago I had to take and learn how to do anything without videos. I was really excited to see you because you are so efficient when you make a video. Thank you so much for all your hard work.
I would advise against it, unless you have a garage, lots of tools and lots of money and lots of spare time! I suggest that you take the advice that was given to me when I was a young man. Instead of seeing the car as you would like to have it, see it as it is and take stock of all that needs fixing and the cost and sleep on it for a night or two. Noting wrong with a used car, no mater how old it is, but total junk, you may be way over your head, abilities, equipment and cost!
Buy the best car you are able to buy, and then learn and master that car. Then you will not spend as much as you did for your fixer upper, on tools alone. Haha. Less stress in life too by having a more reliable car than one to always be having to worry about. It’s fun fixing stuff, but when you get in a pinch or a bind where you really need a car, you will wish your car was problem free. Just my two cents. :)
I'm assuming you're too young to drive, but start a lawn mowing business. You start making money, learning basics of engine car and maintenance research, able to buy a small truck to haul the mower and the arguement of the necessity of a small truck to the parents and by time you are old enough to drive you know your vehicle inside and out, paid for, and you're a leg up on everyone else. 4 cylinder, 5 speed, s10, ranger, Tacoma, or if you're lucky t100. Dont get the 4.3l unless it runs like a champ though they are good motors and parts are common. Bought my first truck when I was 13 got my first ticket when I was 14. So dont drive without parents
Pneumatic or hand pump fluid extractor, long tube down the dip stick, sit back and let the pump do all the work to remove that fluid before dropping the pan. Pretty common to see these Ford pans caved in because someone thought it looked like a good place to jack up the vehicle from.

Kevin Kwangsup Hwang "lifetime fluid" is a joke, except that fluid will last the lifetime of the transmission because the old oil will KILL the transmission, so they do technically die together, and very prematurely.
Kevin Kwangsup Hwang my car doesn't have a dipstick either, these are slightly more challenging, but there should be 2 or 3 drain/fill plugs on your transmission. Always undo the top/fill plug first so you know you are able to add fluid after you drain it. Then remove the lowest drain bolt. This will drain a good amount depending on if it's manual or automatic transmission. When it is done draining replace the drain plug. Now using one of the fill plugs begin adding oil up to the fill plug on the SIDE of the transmission. This can be done pouring into the top fill plug or side plug. The side fill plug should be removed if you are filling from the top, as the location of the fill plug indicates when the transmission is full. As you add fluid the will eventually run out. That is the final level you need. It's important to not over fill, that's why you need to have the fill plug removed as you add fluid. Adding fluid should also be done on a level surface as to not throw off the oil level.

Probably people who are looking for exactly their car's tranny job OR those people who need a 30 second long video on how to do it. Happens a lot in the gaming world. People with in depth videos get less views compared to those who rush everything. Though Chris doesn't have an 80's Chrysler, his videos are very well done to implant a basis on most cars since they're all theoretically alike besides company differences in their products.
I just change my car a/t oil every 2 years without filter,engine oil every 5000km,drive every 50 km 5 days a week,300000km now already,a/t no problem,engine no leak no smoke,that about how much you know your car,because only the driver who will know the problem quick,and can fix it quick,some people wait to next service is two late. People even driving a overheat car to workshop.
This vid gave me everything i needed to do my 2008 dodge dakota 4x2 v6 non lsd ex cab w/42RLE transmission a long overdue bit of TLC. I. Don't. Trust. Shops. Man. Have a good one though seriously my shift points are ungodly!
For the rubber ones I saw a trick where you push in one or two bolts through the gasket and that normally holds them on and gives you an easy start to get the pan screwed back in.

I want to do this on my Ranger as well. It's been changed several times by a shop over the years, but they want $180 to do it these days. I'm guessing this will save at least $120.

I replaced the transmission fluid on my 2006 Hyundai Tiburon at 110k miles (121k now). At that point I only owned the car for around 6k miles, and was very unimpressed with the sport shifter, taking 2-3 seconds to shift between gears, so I decided to replace the fluid.
Holy hell what a difference! the fresh fluid dropped my shifting times from 2-3 seconds all the way down to .25-.5 seconds! best thing I ever did for that car!

Call of Drewski i had that happen when i was replacing injectors for my car. I was having a hard time getting the last one in and then i found out the O-ring never went out with the old injector
I had a problem taking the o- ring out of my 2007 Pontiac. Grand Prix, I tore it a little bit but I decided to leave it in there and not put a new o-ring in and just put in the filter. My o-ring was SUPER HARD to come out.
Fabulous video! I followed your 5 step process and had total success! My truck is 2005 Ford Ranger and I didn't need a universal socket adapter because there was clearance for all 18 bolts. My filter did not have the "spout" on one side, but the new part was identical to the old one. The truck seemed to shift EASIER compared to before! The fluid removed was about 3.5 quarts and the color was similar to your middle variety...translucent brown with slight pink and no metal specks. The metal pan had a little metal on the magnet, but not much. Thank you Chris!...for saving me some $$$!
Just changed my transmission oil and filter this weekend. Great and easy to follow instructions in this video, thanks to Chris I saved over $50, had to buy all the tools to do the job, next time I do this job again, I'll be saving about $200. I grew up in a house full of gear heads, and I started turning wrenches before I can even remember, but honestly I've learned more than a few new things watching these videos. great tutorials chris! and thanks.. whoever does this to their vehicle is smart because you know youre doing the job right as no mechanic is going to follow all these steps! just make sure you have loads and i mean LOADS of dirty rags and obviously clean rags because you WILL need them and trust have two plastic blue tarps underneath to catch all the drips as they spill everywhere. but you get immense satisfaction in knowing you did the job right and you will certainly feel the transmission come alive and drive like a dream. Great video Chris. One suggestion is to install a drain plug to make future draining a breeze. Then you can drain it regularly, measure the amount drained, and refill. It would only take a few minutes and be nearly mess-free.
When the man is clearly teaching us about the transmission, DOs&DONTS, and all the great information he providing us with.... let’s be respectful and not make suggestions like he is uninformed or like he isn’t aware of quicker ways to handle shit. :D

You can reduce fluid mess by using a vacuum pump and pumping out most of the fluid in the pan through the Transmission dipstick tube. Once you get all you can, let it sit for a bit to drip into the pan some more and try one last time to get any remaining bit. Then, when you drop down the pan you will have very little fluid left in the pan and it will not spill everywhere. This will save you a lot of cleaning.
Mazda pans have a drain plug.
Or just take out the transmission speed sensor and it'll drain out of there

This is an excellent description of how to do it. I am older and will not use ramps. I go to my competent mechanic, have him put the car on the lift and now I give the reason that I don't do the change. While the car is on the lift, I do what the insurance company doesn't want the customer to do. I have a list of inspection items, lubrication items (oh yes, you lubricate seals under the car or eventually have a big repair problem vs. a few bucks for lubricant). The tires are turned and inspected. I am inspecting every component. Your dealer mechanic and even your trusty local guy will not the same inspection that you want to do. It would be a PITA to do this with just ramps in the driveway. And remember. When you do city driving, short hops, start and stops, you are working the transmission much harder than driving on the open road. If your manual says change the fluid every 40,000 miles and you are highway driving the average mileage, that is every 2-3 years. You have about the same time interval with hard, in city, lower mileage driving.
Thanks for the video! My pan was leaking and dealer wanted 400 to fix it. Took me 3 hours and I stripped a torx bolt that holds the filter, but you saved me 250 dollars and I am proud to say I did it myself!

Suggestion:
Instead of making a huge mess with the oil dripping out of the pan, use suction pump to remove most of the fluid from the dipstick hole. Stick your plastic tube into the dipstick hole and start your suction pump. Remove most of your fluid that way. After that remove your entire pan without any fluid dripping. There will be very small amount of fluid remaining.

Hey could you do a video on how to change cvt fluid. They're tons of automatic transmission fluid change videos but nobody really ever talks about cvt transmissions say like my 2009 nissan altima has. I read that the process is similar but it has additional places to drain it from so I was just wondering if you could grace folks like me with a video for the cvt. Thanks.

Wow, I'm double impressed. The first thing is that in the manual they mention the change of the transmission oil and the second that you can check and fill up your transmission oil from the hub. On the bmw's that's impossible. Bmw tells the owners the transmission oil holds the entire life of the car 😂. 150'000 km is their definition of lifetime 🤷🏿♂️

The best tip of this video is to use a tarp. It's pretty much guaranteed that you will spill some, if not a lot, of fluid on the ground if you're vehicle has a pan to drop like this one. So depending on where youre doing it that could be bad. First time I did this I made a big mess in my work parking lot . It's also hard to funnel the old fluid back into a container, as chris demonstrated. But thats normal. Its not easy. Use a tarp trust me
Funneling large amounts of fluid in these cases requires patience and awareness. As the fluid travels it pushes air out, pouring too fast causes these air bubbles to push some fluid out, like when he poured into the container in the box. It takes a slow steady process with constant pauses.

Hey Chris, Awesome video as always, just one suggestion? You reach a lot of people and people listen to you. If you could advise on your video that everyone out there to safely dispose of used oil and liquids that would be awesome. I think it's something like 10,000 litres of fresh water that is contaminated from just the 4 litre oil of one change being thrown in the trash or 'buried in the back yard' or dumped in a lake.. I'm in nz and unfortunately you can't usually take used oil back to the shop where you bought it but it's pretty cheap or free to take to the local dump. Cheers Chris, legend.

I just did this to my ‘01 Olds Silhouette yesterday. Satisfying upon completion, but my filter was not that easy to do. No bolt to hold in or remove he filter. It just seats in using a metal ring. The old filter actually broke off removing it. I thought I broke my transmission lol. But I got some advice from an Oldsmobile master tech who said that it was fine as long as I could get the rest of the filter out, which I did. A job well for. Took 3.5 hours though. On the plus side, that knowledge will be great for later next time I change the filter, and if I ever encounter another vehicles come with the same type of filter installation.
Do a video of undercoating your frame and body. I do it. And I know showing people would help save their frames alot

ChrisFix I do it to all my trucks and cars. Make sure rust is cleaned with wire brush and clean underneath to get any dirt off and make sure it is 65 degrees out. It's quite simple. Wear gloves and any clothes you don't care if ruined.

The Robot Sniper make sure to use the thickest rubberized undercoating you can find and make sure to cover everything even wires and brake lines and connectors!

@@chrisfix The automatics in that generation Civic have an internal filter as in the transmission must be removed and taken apart to get to it.
Jonathan, if you read this, install a transmission oil cooler, specially if you live in a hot climate or drive uphill quite a bit. Those BMXA transmissions are really shoddy, they overheat and fail easily. (source: I own a 2004 Civic DX - I have looked into it)
You could also put in an inline filter, like a Magnefine, and change it every time you change the AT oil. I'm guessing it's the next best thing concerning filter media replacement.

I would advise against it, unless you have a garage, lots of tools and lots of money and lots of spare time! I suggest that you take the advice that was given to me when I was a young man. Instead of seeing the car as you would like to have it, see it as it is and take stock of all that needs fixing and the cost and sleep on it for a night or two. Noting wrong with a used car, no mater how old it is, but total junk, you may be way over your head, abilities, equipment and cost!
Buy the best car you are able to buy, and then learn and master that car. Then you will not spend as much as you did for your fixer upper, on tools alone. Haha. Less stress in life too by having a more reliable car than one to always be having to worry about. It’s fun fixing stuff, but when you get in a pinch or a bind where you really need a car, you will wish your car was problem free. Just my two cents. :)
I'm assuming you're too young to drive, but start a lawn mowing business. You start making money, learning basics of engine car and maintenance research, able to buy a small truck to haul the mower and the arguement of the necessity of a small truck to the parents and by time you are old enough to drive you know your vehicle inside and out, paid for, and you're a leg up on everyone else. 4 cylinder, 5 speed, s10, ranger, Tacoma, or if you're lucky t100. Dont get the 4.3l unless it runs like a champ though they are good motors and parts are common. Bought my first truck when I was 13 got my first ticket when I was 14. So dont drive without parents

Pneumatic or hand pump fluid extractor, long tube down the dip stick, sit back and let the pump do all the work to remove that fluid before dropping the pan. Pretty common to see these Ford pans caved in because someone thought it looked like a good place to jack up the vehicle from.

Thanks so much for your videos. I was able to change my brakes, rotors and the break fluid this weekend. I have a newer model Toyota that doesn't have a transmission fluid dipstick. How would this process be done? Also can you comment on "life time fluid" for newer automatic transmissions?

Kevin Kwangsup Hwang "lifetime fluid" is a joke, except that fluid will last the lifetime of the transmission because the old oil will KILL the transmission, so they do technically die together, and very prematurely.
Kevin Kwangsup Hwang my car doesn't have a dipstick either, these are slightly more challenging, but there should be 2 or 3 drain/fill plugs on your transmission.
Always undo the top/fill plug first so you know you are able to add fluid after you drain it.
Then remove the lowest drain bolt. This will drain a good amount depending on if it's manual or automatic transmission.
When it is done draining replace the drain plug. Now using one of the fill plugs begin adding oil up to the fill plug on the SIDE of the transmission. This can be done pouring into the top fill plug or side plug. The side fill plug should be removed if you are filling from the top, as the location of the fill plug indicates when the transmission is full.
As you add fluid the will eventually run out. That is the final level you need. It's important to not over fill, that's why you need to have the fill plug removed as you add fluid. Adding fluid should also be done on a level surface as to not throw off the oil level.

472 now. but i heard that those people where owners of 30 minute oil & fluid change shops. They charge an easy 250 dollars + for this service. And chris is right. Do it yourself and you know that its done correctly + you learned a new skill.
Probably people who are looking for exactly their car's tranny job OR those people who need a 30 second long video on how to do it. Happens a lot in the gaming world. People with in depth videos get less views compared to those who rush everything.
Though Chris doesn't have an 80's Chrysler, his videos are very well done to implant a basis on most cars since they're all theoretically alike besides company differences in their products.

I just change my car a/t oil every 2 years without filter,engine oil every 5000km,drive every 50 km 5 days a week,300000km now already,a/t no problem,engine no leak no smoke,that about how much you know your car,because only the driver who will know the problem quick,and can fix it quick,some people wait to next service is two late.

For the rubber ones I saw a trick where you push in one or two bolts through the gasket and that normally holds them on and gives you an easy start to get the pan screwed back in.
