I have worked for Mississippi State Football as a student worker for the past 4 years. When Coach Leach was hired, there was an incredible amount of excitement around the program. Coach Leach delivered, providing big wins over LSU, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, and more. He took his team from 3-7 in his first year to 8-4 in his 3rd. He was a winner, and he believed in his player and his coaches. It breaks my hard that he won’t see all his hard work here come to total fruition. Everyone loved Coach Leach. He always treated us student workers with respect, and acknowledged the work we did. Seeing some of the stories from regular people who had their lives greatly impacted by this man has been incredible. There was no one too small or unimportant for him to talk to. I wish I had spoken to him more because he was a truly incredible man. I wish he knew the impact he made on my life and the lives of so many others. Rest in peace Pirate. I know you and God have started an everlasting conversation.

Conner thank you for sharing that story and glimpse behind the curtain. I’m an Auburn lifer but have loved Coach Leach as long as I’ve loved football. Mississippi State was his most perfect fit, and I’m sure you all will have memories that will stick around for a lifetime.
Hail State, and long live the memory of The Pirate.

Bob Stoops talked about it on KREF today, OU and that 2000 National Championship win would not have happened without Coach Leach. He may have left the year prior to winning it all but he laid the foundation for Qb Josh Heuple and Bob said he considers Coach Leach apart of that championship team, it was Mike Leach’s offense. Coach Leach was a special man and I was lucky to be able to follow his career, especially as an OU fan. We will all miss you Coach Leach ❤

His rant after Texas Tech beat Baylor changed my life when I watched it 5 years ago as a lost 16 year old tryna find myself. Watched that rant and realized that life moves to fast to get caught up in past success and failures. Success can be poison because it can lead to becoming complacent. Best part of the rant to me was when he said “We might have to change some of you guys living situations” because some of you guys are only pulling mediocrity out of each other. R.I.P to Mike Leach 😢🙏🏾

The reason I like football as much as I do, is because of Mike Leach at Texas Tech. Being a Red Raider fan in the mid 2000’s, I saw some amazing football games that are still my most favorite games I’ve ever seen. 2004 Holiday Bowl, 2005 @ Nebraska, 2005 vs Oklahoma, 2006 @ Texas A&M, 07 Insight Bowl, 2007 vs Oklahoma, 2008 Gator bowl and of coarse 2008 vs Texas. I still cheer on the Red Raiders but it’s nowhere near the same as it used to be. Those were special times. Thanks for the great memories coach Leach. They mean a lot to me.

I was in the marching band at Mississippi state in 20-22 and one of the cool things that State does for us is they have the football coach stop by during band camp and speak with us. Obviously we’re all excited that Coach Leach was coming in regardless, but what really made the experience special was despite the support staff trying to drag him away, he insisted on speaking with us and answering questions. It was just really awesome to get that kind of interaction with him and that day will forever be one of the better memories of college band, other than his big wins of course haha.

You hit the nail on the head at the beginning of the video. I never met the man but always loved hearing him speak. When the wife and I heard he was coming to State, we were so excited. He was like a distant uncle you never got to speak to but would send you rambling videos about everything from pirates, magic tricks, Geronimo, wedding advice and superior Halloween candies. Our house has been in mourning for the last couple days. I'm going to miss Mike. Mississippians, in general, adopted him as one of their own. He was a good man. Fair seas and following winds, Mike.

I’m in my third year at State, so as long as I have been in school Mike has been our football coach. I can vividly remember the day Mike was hired during my senior year of high school. I was excited to see what the air raid would look like in the SEC, and I was looking forward to his unexpected press conference answers. What I didn’t expect was the impact he would have on my personal life despite the fact that I have never even met him personally. I spoke with some of my friends yesterday, and it felt like we all lost a family member. Mike was a man who genuinely was a “one of one”, but most importantly he made everyone around him feel important. In a society that preaches conformity and puts an emphasis on personal pride, Mike defied all of these things and did it his way. And for that I will forever cherish his time at State. Rest in peace, Mike. We will never forget you.

It's rare to get to see a guy like this. Mike leach was such a unique man. I don't think anyone even comes close to being as entertaining as this man. I rarely feel sad over a celebrity death but this one got me. I agree with you. We honestly got to feel like we knew him. Mike leach was so raw and passionate about football but he was also passionate about other things. I don't think many coaches are that open about that stuff. Mike would go off on tangents about things he enjoyed. When you watched a Make Leach interview or press conference you knew he wasn't just gonna talk football and that was part of the fun. He was just a regular person and that was always the best part.

Amazing offensive mind, also seemed like from all the interviews with people he was a great guy. I loved how he was giving marriage advice, telling the reporter, "you should have come to me sooner, I could have saved you." 🤣🤣 Also, the story that he was happy to go to jail to pay for his college tuition, talk about being real and not giving a hoot about what people think!!! I was a senior at Mississippi State sitting in class when his hiring was announced. I grabbed my brother and we went to the airport not two hours later to go watch him land and greet fans for the first time. We brought our cowbells and got him to sign them. Then we decided to circle back around to the end of the line and we got a picture with him through the fence at the airport, and while I was taking the selfie he said 'Its like your visiting your friend in jail through the bars' and that cracked us up. We didn't realize it until we got back home, but he had someone signed the back of the shirt my brother was wearing without either of us even knowing it! He will be greatly missed. Life can be snatched away in an instant, but the Gospel of Christ gives me peace. I hope it does for you too.

This seems like a watershed in college football. We're transitioning to a younger generation of football coaches--many of whom he trained. I bet this will shake some older coaches. Things like this should make a person evaluate where a person is in life, a person's own health and the time a person spend with their families. Mike Leach's legacy will live on for a long time in college football. I hope the people affected by his loss will find peace.

I'm in the Famous Maroon Band. Every year, Mike Leach would come by between rehearsals and talk with us/take any question our little heads could think of and one kid asked hime "what keeps you going?" And without a beat he says "black coffee and Copenhagen, next question." Another kid asks him about his pre game ritual, to which he goes on about how he isn't the superstitious type, but one time at tech, when he was feeling a little sluggish, one of the coaches suggested he get a B12 shot in the butt before playing a&m. After whipping the Aggies, the superstitious coaches were all in the room with the doctor to administer the shot.

They should only use regular season records and keep a coach's bowl records separately. Using bowl records skews the stats because if everything else is equal, the bowl game becomes a 50-50 coin flip instead of one of 12 or 13. Just like a high school coach in the state playoffs always must end the year with a loss, unless they win it all. The bowl carries a different weight.

When Coach Leach talks about Pittsburg State University Gorillas in his mascot interview!!! Us Gorillas aren’t allowed to throw bananas anymore, but Welcome to the Jungle still plays here in Pittsburg

RIP coach Leach. You will be missed. MSU please pay his widow the balance of his contract. Do the right thing. TTU please pay him what you owe him. Do the right thing. It’s about the principle.

Johnny Majors took over three programs that were in the gutter and made them all nationally relevant when he left them: Iowa St, Pittsburgh (1976 National Champs) and Tennessee. He, like Mike Leach and others, should get credit for having the guts to take those jobs knowing they wouldn't have the great winning %. They belong in the HOF.

I know its nick-picky but Vol Nation considers Josh Heupel as part of Mike Leach's coaching tree even though he never coached under him but Josh says he got the coaching bug when he was Leach's QB at Oklahoma.

Most of the Mike Leach teams did not have back to back great performances, but Harrell and Crabtree were different.

When playing his teams you had to prepare for anything because he would throw you a knuckleball when you don't see it coming and his teams always played with everything they had .what more could you want a coach to do

Active coaching wins leaders list is not very accurate. Not sure where you get the numbers.

To your first point, college football is absolutely entertainment. Not all level of sports are entertainment, and not all athletes and coaches are entertainers. No one is going down to the park on Saturdays and watching the AYSO kids play soccer unless its your kid playing, but you probably don't have a kid playing any of the college football you watch. So why would you watch it unless its entertaining?

I like Brian Kelly, LSU's coach. He's a good coach, but to me he's dull as dishwater. We need more Mike Leach kind of guys, guys who bring color to the sport. We had our share at LSU this millenium, with Les Miles and Ed Orgeron. You gotta like a guy who's gonna leave the listeners grinning after an interview. May God bless Mike Leach and comfort his family.
