  • College Football coaching hires and hot seat talk have become a staple of the overall conversation surrounding the sport, and on Late Kick Live Ep 255 Josh Pate responded to a viewer question asking which head coaching hires he thought were the absolute worst over the past decade. The runaway winner has to be Chad Morris at Arkansas as the Razorbacks fell to the likes of Western Kentucky, San Jose State, Colorado State, Vanderbilt, and North Texas all within a 2 year span. Willie Taggart also gets serious consideration for his brief but very underwhelming stint at FSU even with the ACC being down at the time. Josh also discusses the Les Miles hire at Kansas and how it failed to stand out versus anything else KU has done recently. Also, we get a surprise Southern Miss mention on the show but for all the wrong reasons. What do you think is the worst head coaching hire in College Football over the last decade? Lol, yeah, at least I was there for the '14 and '15 seasons. I was still finishing up in '18 and I remember watching the Pig Trail preseason report. Tera Talmadge was about to cry over to the side, Alyssa Orange freaking out cause Morris said they were on track and she said they looked like the worst team she'd every watched practice, and poor Mike Irwin was trying to calm them down. So, I passed on my season access pass that year, best purchasing decision I ever made. Watched them struggle and cheese out a win against a bad FCS team week 1, knew they were done.

    • @Grannyknockers
      @Grannyknockers 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Same. I was there from 15-19 and the energy on saturdays during Morris's tenure was just depressing. Especially his 2nd season. Everybody knew we weren't winning more than 3 games that year, the team lost faith in him, and the life got sucked right out of the stadium. Went back last year for the Texas game and it was night and day. The fans were buzzing, everyone was bought in, the team was flying around the field. Pittman's really pumped life back into the team and the fan base. Made it fun to be a hog on Saturdays again.

    Cant believe no one has mentioned Paul Pasqualoni, but maybe that kinda proves my point lol. The only thing worse in sports than being a laughing stock is being irrelevant, he drove UConn there. Pasqualoni took a team that was raked and made an appearance in the 2011 Fiesta Bowl and gave them two 5-7 seasons. He was fired after 4 straight loses in 2013, including an unforgiveable loss to FCS Townson. That losing streak was actually in the middle of 10 game losing streak starting from 2012. College football is cyclical and never say never, but Pasqualoni may have killed UConn football forever.

      @@imjustkidding5978 Truth. His best "recruit" was his bride. He also lacked the ties to the natural recruiting areas for the Hogs. It's imperative that the Razorbacks recruit the whole SEC footprint with emphasis on Texas and Louisiana. We occasionally have good to great skill players in state, but lack the big boys up front to win consistently. Our weakness going into the coming season is DL. The big guys with 5.0 an under speed are freaks of nature and very rare, but can be found in all of the top tier SEC teams and, if the Razorbacks wish to join them, we will need big fast linemen. A cursory viewing of the Arkansas vs. Georgia game last year quickly becomes a case in point. The portal helped us last year maybe it will again this year.

    Taggert's flame out is still the most surprising one to me, especially how bad it got. He did a good job rebuilding Western Kentucky from abysmal to mediocre, he assembled a lot of the talent Petrino and Brohm would win with later. Then he goes to USF and after a few down years builds that program up to be respectable and has a good season. Was only at Oregon for a year but they played better their one year under him. He had a good track record, goes to FSU and completely collapses. Just amazes me how bad it was under him and how he went from building up programs to utter collapse. @@_baller very true but you usually don't get lucky in two different programs that were both down like when he took over Western Kentucky and USF, that requires a good level of competence to do it in two different places and that's why his downfall to me is the most flummoxing. It's not that he failed at FSU that surprises me, that's not surprising at all, it's that it was a situation he had been in on three separate situations, had done a good job in two, Oregon he did fine but only one season so hard to give him too much credit, then collapsed in less than two years at FSU. Usually we see someone do well in a group of 5 conference, move up to the Power 5 and after 3-4 years fail then get fired. With him he did a good job in three different programs, one a power 5 program, and just melted down entirely. The West Coast offense had already proven to be an abysmal failure in the college ranks, most notably after Kansas dropped 76 points on Callahan's Nebraska team.
      - I gave Turner Gill the benefit of the doubt. Nobody could have forseen just how bad he would be.
      - Beatty followed Weis, had successful history with the program, and was cheap enough that they could afford him while paying out Weis' contract.

    Arkansas is the perfect example of just how important a good coach is. 2019 and 2021 are basically the exact same team with a handful of differences. Yet one played like they’d never seen a field and the other was a couple plays away from 10-3 or even 11-2. What changed? It wasn’t like the players sucked and then magically got better. After all, you still had players like Burks and Morgan on the field. No, it was the staff that changed. Pittman and company are what happens when good players meet a good coach and they each help each other become their best versions of themselves. Morris was what happens when absolutely no one works together and the players just dont care to work to their potential. On paper and talent wise, we were much better than 4-20 in 18 and 19. Our staff just didn’t know how to or just didn’t care to bring out their best. I mean I really don’t like talking down about people, but man Morris really made it hard to like him. What a great segment! Keep it up Josh Pate. There were some Red Raiders who were upset we didn't hire Chad Morris, I have no idea why. I laughed at that one & that hire. I won't laugh too hard as Matt Wells could have easily made this list.
    Les Miles created a lot of angst and stole 2 of our best recruits. Oh, there was weeping and gnashing of teeth, but neither did anything & are no longer at KU. As Josh Pate pointed out, neither did Les Miles.
    I have a friend from MS & is a MSU grad, he is confused about USM as well either. He says the schools are comparable in size and such and no reason for such a fall.

    Ellis Johnson really damaged Southern Miss. He was hired over Blake Anderson. Blake was already on staff and players liked him. Ellis hired several coaches that had been out of football for years. Strength and conditioning coach wouldn't let players listen to music during workouts. Team was intact only big loss was our QB. Senior heavy offensive line. We had a senior QB on roster but Ellis insisted on playing his prize freshman recruit. He wasn't ready. Then injuries mounted. The team gave up after the Louisville game( Teddy Bridgewater was their QB). I'm afraid our best days are in the past.

Slick Rick hurt the program and Colorado and UCLA too, but Tyrone took UWash into the wash of poo-poo laundry. Ironically it was Sarkisian that corrected U-dub before taking USCal (a job he had no business taking mind you) and now is at Texas. Which Texas should of kept Herman.
