A Rare Catch on the Reading and Northern Railroad's Pennsy Running Track | Ft. MP15

- On July 21, 2023, I caught a train on the Reading and Northern's Pennsy running track or Schuylkill Branch, a sight I had been hoping to catch for years!! This branch is significant for several reasons; the first of which is that it is a 13-mile stretch of the former Pennsylvania Railroad. Another is that it was the branch that the Blue Mountain and Reading Railroad was founded, now known as the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad (RBMN). After Reading and Northern's CEO, Mr. Andy Muller Jr. purchased the Conrail Reading Cluster of tracks in the Anthracite Coal Regions, traffic on this branch began to slow to only occasional freight and equipment moves in the modern day. These moves are to any of four industries located between Temple and Leesport, PA, to store cars toward the end of the line, or to move equipment to or from the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum in Hamburg, PA.
The industry serviced in this video is Growmark in Leesport, PA. On this day, the Yard Job of North Reading (YJNR) brought a loaded tanker car to the industry and brought back three empties. While I somewhat messed up my chase from Temple to Leesport, I was able to get many great catches in Leesport and on their way back to Temple.
I hope that you enjoy this special catch on a sparsely used Reading and Northern branch line!!

Great catch. Back in the late 80's and 90's I rode the train to Hamburg many times. To bad it is not running anymore. The depot area at Temple has changed a bit. It use to be a busy place as well.
Thanks! I sure wish there was still excursions on this line as well. I live in Hamburg, it would be awesome to take rides on the train in a weekend. Maybe one day.
I have pictures my grandfather took on opening day of the Blue Mountain and Reading, it’s a shame how little use this line gets and it’s an even bigger shame how the station has sat unused for decades. I also wish that maybe someday the Reading and Northern can have some sort of partnership with the Reading Railroad Museum which is at the end of that line, it would be great to see original Reading Equipment running with the Reading and Northern!
One of my dreams as well!
Rode behind 425, 2102, many many times, the E8s, RDCs, and the RCT&HS diesels a couple times.
It’s a great line to ride and I’d certainly ride all day again like I did as a teenager
The BM&R line is easy to chase much easier than the R&N to Hamburg, which is easier after PN and beyond to JT.
I’d love to see Andy rehab this line back to 65 mph for 2102 & 425 again in 2025-26 for the Anniversary for steam passenger service.
1983 is the year he began freight but Passenger wasn’t until the Christmas Shoppers Specials to Norristown in Dec 1985 and then regular service on this line began in early 1986.
I would absolutely love to see that line used again for excursions. I’ve been fortunate enough to catch a few things running on it occasionally (museum and freight) but it would be awesome to actually chase excursions on it again.
that was very cool! Great video!
Thank you very much!
Amazing video 😊
Thank you!
Smart to keep this rail in place, trucking is only going to get more expensive.
I am surprised that they don't use a caboose for such a long trip with the loco on the rear.
Wouldn’t be the worst idea to have one
Excellent video. Do you happen to know when the Glen-Gery brick plant in Shoemakersville stopped being serviced. I believe the tracks still cross rt. 61. There is also an old signal bridge there as well. Thanks again, great video.
Thank you! Unfortunately I do not know exactly when it stopped being serviced, though living in this area for almost 19 years I have never seen it been serviced so probably at least that long if I had to guess
OMG! I BET THIS IS THE LOCOMOTIVE THAT MOVED my car to interchange with NS back in September 2022!
Quiet possibly
Well I hope the temple to hamburg line be fix and reused the line for tourist train again.
they dont plan on it, they only have the line cause of 2 businesses and cause it was the BM&R
@@thecapisoffyttrue, it has very little use anymore, but that don’t mean it doesn’t have a chance of being restored.
@@northpennvalleysteamrailroad highly doubt it
What if the line between Hamburg and Temple can be restored and reused again in the future along with the Temple Station?
I have many happy memories of riding the BM&R, but that line can't compare to their current excursion runs. I think they made the smart choice.
Your videos are awesome great quality but in my opinion your opening segment is to long your videos are good enough not to have a long channel opening keep up your awesome videos thank you
Thank you! And yes, I definitely agree that intro was longer than it has to be. This year I have changed it to have it half of that length, and it makes the videos flow much nicer. Glad you enjoyed!
