  • While waiting on parts for another repair project, I decided to fix up this old Marantz Amplifier. The later half of the work was done on weeknights, when I didn't have a lot of time to film.

      today (4/14/2019) finally bought a 1060, i wanted one of these for some time now... fully working, but in need of a good cleaning, maybe a recap too just for kicks... great piece to add to my marantz collection!!

      Is there any way to get hold of You? I have a 1060 that has been completely recapped.It has a noise like static at all times.All of the switches and pots have been De-toxit. I can also disconnect the pre amp stage and it still just sounds static.Not affected b Volume or tone. Is on constantly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

      Awesome job. I recently scored a mint looking 1060 with wood case, that I also paid a bit too much for. This will be my first receiver restoration. I’m super stoked.

    I love Your vintage audio restorations! Really pro work and it is obvious that You have great passion for it! Your channel inspired me to get my own Marantz 2226 few weeks ago and I am going to re-cap and fix it. I have experiences building amplifiers but no restorations done yet... I would also like to know how do You clean those boards? Isopropyl alcohol? As I am not the only one asking maybe You could do some instructional videos for us? Many thanks and keep up the good work! My old Marantz as seen here, is still working ,I bought it for $120 in I think back in 1972 . I miss my earlier Dynakit tube Hi Fi..also had Bogan amps..all technology now as old as I am..wasa thrill as a teenager in the 1950's to read HiFi magazines & also , Downbeat for jazz LP reviews .

    I'll probably keep the 1030 as a spare, use it on another computer, or stack it on the 1060 and use it to power a set of rear channel speakers. I'm hoping to get some more broken 1030's and 1060's to rebuild and sell eventually. I like working on them :-)

    I have to repeat what DEW409 said; "Skill, knowledge, and patience. You have them all...and that is a winning combination." Question; You mentioned DeoxIT. Is that the best stuff to use for cleaning knobs, switches & buttons? I've cleaned the switches, buttons & knobs of my Harman Kardon equipment 4-5 times already with other stuff from Radio Shack and they work fine for a time then always go back to not making contact. I have to constantly wiggle them for them to make contact.

  • @Aeduo
    @Aeduo 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Pretty cool. Too bad we can't get an accurate idea of the sound due to it going through a camera microphone, at least a couple layers of data compression, resampling from 44100 to 48000hz by most of our sound card drivers and our own equipment and speakers.

    MJ21194 is rated at 250 W max dissipation, that's a mighty pair of output devices for just 40 W/channel output power. Given that the originals were 2SD217 types rated at 60 W dissipation, is there a reason you chose such a high power device when the good old 2N3055 would have done the job? Don't take my comment as criticism - I'm just curious and think you did a good job and have much patience.

    This is probably the last true Marantz series. On the 1070, which still sounds great, they've already made heavy cost reduction on the internals. On the next series (DM, 1980) the sound got also "cheap".

      Mark Russell Depends on personal taste. The 850 has a bit more power, while the 1060 is warmer sounding to me.

    De-Oxit D100 would be a good all around choice for switches and pots. It's what I use most of the time. But if your contacts are bent or broken, it won't fix that of course. For modern plastic pots, Faderlube is great.

    How do you match up the transistors ? Most of those are obsolete. I have a Panasonic receiver I'm restoring that they're not available any longer. Has a hum in the right channel. I have a Marantz 2015 receiver that I restored, cosmetically, that I use for my daily audio use. The sound is fine, and it had a little scratchy controls but is fine after Deox-ing. Thanks.

    I just watched this entire video and parts more than once. I have a Marantz 2265B Stereo Tuner/amplifier that I plugged a keyboard into the phone jack (don't ask) about 10-15 years ago. So, I and decided to take it off the shelf and give it a heave-ho. Before I did that I looked inside for a fuse and there was none and did find it on the outside back panel. It was a 3 amp and was blown. It lit up and I was so happy, but not for long because there were flames coming out of it. I later got some online help and it was suggested I check the four output transistors and sure enough the one transistor nearest the four scorched resisters was bad. I am nothing close to an electronics person but I am getting some help explaining what I need to do. He is going to supply me with the parts I need at cost. I am 71 year old retired mechanical person who is loosing sleep just thinking about doing this, but after seeing your video, I am going to give it a try. If it works, I will have my wonderful sounding Marantz 2265B that I bought in 1978 or so for $410 at Value House, if my memory is correct. Thanks for your great video. And now I am off to watch you restore a Marantz 2225 tuner.

    Hey Maxx...I have a Marantz 1060 that I bought new in the early 70's. The left side went out several years back. After watching your video...I pulled it out and took it apart. Nothing appears damaged visually (burnt or leaking). Do you think I could get away with just replacing the output transistors? Mine had the Hitachi 2SC897's. Where can I buy new output transistors? Thank You

      @Maxxarcade  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +scot roberts I get most of my parts from Mouser Electronics.
      Have you tried swapping the Pre-Out/Main In jumpers to see if the problem follows the power amp or pre-amp?
      It's possible that you may have other bad parts, just as I found when rebuilding this one. You will probably need new capacitors and a couple transistors at the least.

    Quick question -- Since you've taken the whole amp apart and put it back together. I run a 1060, if i were to use my unit as a preamp, would it be dual mono? Is the the preamp board dual mono without cross talk?

    • @Maxxarcade
      @Maxxarcade  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The preamp in these sounds pretty good. Both channels share the same power supply and ground, but each of the signal paths have their own components. Sound quality will probably vary depending on the input impedance of your external amp.
