Between EEVBlog, MaxxArcade, Tampatech and etc, beginning to realise how vulnerable capacitors are over time, but this is also reigniting my enthusiasm for repairs as that is what I trained for 20 some years ago but struggled to get work in electronic repairs. I've been watching a handful of these repair videos lately. Mostly interested in the simple 2 channel units. I have to say this video is one of the top showing what your doing, non breeze over hook ups, and explain things yet. Kudos to a excellent video.
Excellent demonstration on fixing a Marantz 1030; like you I carefully match the gain of the driver transistors and change out the capacitors, finally checking DC offset and correctly bias the outputs for symmetrical balance.

Thanks for the video, enjoyed it... have similar problems with my 1030 (later version like this one). Lots of noise so some caps and transistors will need replacement.
1st thing always to do on an old audio amp is wiggle and twiddle switches...often your missing channel suddenly will pop back when fiddling here. Do this before 'diving in'.

Thanks for the video and the instructions. It is all very good!!! I tend to replaced all electrolytic caps from my sound equipment from the mid 1990s or early -- it is a complete peace of mind. BTW, you filmed this over 4 years ago, I think that by now you have bought a desoldering gun. I used that manual desoldering pump before but was never good at using that until I finally bought a desoldering gun -- what a change! Regards,

It's a good idea to keep the xsistors matched side to side to keep gains all the same, somewhat. Because you know, audiophiles can hear the differences in xsistors side to side. 😂
I love your videos. But... Smile with me now! ... your block diagram was... just inaccurate. In my best DR. Smith voice, "OH, the pain!" The phono preamp and FM input are in front of the selector block. The path should be [any input] to [selector block] to [volume tone block] to [preamp block] to [power amp block(s)] to [head phone jack] to [speaker selector] to [speaker output]. The phono input goes directly to the phono preamp, which both raises the signal level and applies industry standard equalization, making the phono level into compatible line level and it NOW joins the selector block. The FM receiver, and other input devices (usually) already put out properly equalized line level and goes to the appropriate input of the selector block. Thank you for your great videos! Thumbs up!
I know this is an old video - so, I don't really expect a reply but...... I have this exact same unit on my bench now. Had the exact same problem - low gain from driver transistors on one channel. I replaced all six transistors (both channels) and all of the caps on the driver board. So far, so good. Both channels working now. I now need to do the bias and output adjustments. I have the required test equipment, and a fair amount of experience. My question is - I noticed that the output was never checked for DC (ie; offset). Am I correct in assuming that balanced clipping points will yield minimal DC on the outputs? BTW - thanks very much for what you do. I love your channel. Have learned a lot. And that Southern accent....I find it quite calming actually 🙂
What some may realize is that, the closer the range that the part is to your circuit's operating voltage, the more efficient it is. If that makes any sense even.
I just acquired this amp. It blows the fuse on power on. I can't to get it sorted utilizing some of the techniques you have demonstrated. Hopefully its just the power supply board causing my fuse to pop.
nice video, one suggestion for you. using a tool specifically designed for tweaking potentiometers is a good practice to get in the habit of doing. metal objects such as a screwdriver can cause interference in some circuits as well as being potentially dangerous........ just saying
Hello Marc. I noticed on the circuit board, the transistor's center pin is the collector, however on the cut sheet you showed, the center pin is the base...is there a discrepancy there?

I have an Adcom GFA 555 that works good on my outdoor speakers but I would like to check out before bringing inside and connecting to my really good speakers. Didn't understand why, when the bias voltage was jumping up and down you said it was a bad capacitor. Did you replace it and then adjust the bias voltage later after the video?
Under your instructions for Amp Bias Adjustment you outline the procedure verbally , compare what you say to what's referenced in print. and yes if I am not careful I do the same thing. 7.5 volts DC is a lot diffrent from 7.5 mV DC and yes you do correct yourself in the actual procedure later on,thank you for sharing
Hello! I've got Marantz 2220 and it's got similar power amplifier board. I've seen that some people adjust DC offset by connecting multimeter to speaker terminals and turning trimmer resistors (R729/30) accordingly (to get 0V). Is this a substitute adjustment for these 2 steps in "power amplifier adjustment", or for at least one? Thanks!
I would have replaced all the electrolytic capacitors. Their life span is only 30 years and the Marantz looks to be at least that. My thoughts. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice video. I have a marantz 2232 amp, it seems to have lots of power with great sound but i never see any info on these units. My particular unit has uneven sound on left channel, slightly pushing in or moving volume knob from side to side corrects this temporarily. I was wondering what you think might be the problem, and do you think this amp is worth fixing,
Hello from Italy, I own a Marantz 104 Tuner driven by a Marantz 1030. My speakers are Klipsch HeresyII (1988). Just one question please: the bass section seems poor. To have more smooth sound I must add laudness and turn the bass at nearly the maximum level. Speakers are Hi Efficiency 99db, maybe are not a good match Marantz-Klipsch or do you think there is something that doesn't work properly inside my Marantz 1030? I often clean inside from dust, but never changed or replaced original pieces: just the power lamp burned. What do you think about it? Sorry for my english. I have the same problem with my marantz pm151, that the right channel for both speaker outputs doesn't work, and I would like to repair it, but to send it off to someone to repair would cost me the same as, or more, than just buying a working used one. Is there any advice you could give me on trying to repair it at home myself with limited equipment as I have never done this before.
Good job, but really. You've got that nice 2246 scope. You could have used that and a multimeter and really troubleshot it down to that transistor. This isn't on you, but these days people just shotgun caps etc and not so much actual troubleshooting. So much is revealed with waveforms and voltage levels. I've been doing this going on 40 years and I would love to see these skills survive.

Very interesting, when using signal generator is it always 1khz to test this or other frequencies can be used - what is the minimum MHz you would recommend when investing on a signal generator? do you also need a scope for this? Not all amps have trim pots to adjust bias or or configure output transistors, so would you just leave it as default?
+jon123423 It might be easier for me to just make a video this weekend showing my audio test bench and all the things I do to test out an amp and what not. As to the trim pots, most have an adjustable bias, those that don't, you may need to replace bias resistors
+jon123423 1khz is just a good starting point where i do most testing. however for frequency response, i use the full range. i'll make a video and demonstrate soon. a scope is very handy, any 10mhz or higher scope will work well for audio if there are no bias pots, you may need to insert one or replace resistors, watch my mc225 video to see an example

Hello Marc, there is NO DC offset ...... These are not power supply caps but capacitor output and should be floating at half the supply voltage.

I have the same problem with my marantz pm151, that the right channel for both speaker outputs doesn't work, and I would like to repair it, but to send it off to someone to repair would cost me the same as, or more, than just buying a working used one. Good question. I do use a scope a lot on SS unit but guess I need to post that more.
Have you ever serviced reel to reel decks?
The bigger the voltage of the components, the more heat is generated, it is never a good solution.
