Al, this is fantastic! However, I would love to see a similar "up to date" comparison with other tools, specifically Airtable and ClickUp. I'm a big fan of Coda, but it can be difficult without expert videos like this to present to teams or clients, for instance, how Coda can be an excellent alternative for those other applications.
Hey Amir, lot of great tutorials out there that might be able to help! This one is with Clickup: th-cam.com/video/bRY_Yy2zrhA/w-d-xo.html. This one is comparing with Airtable (created by my colleague): coda.io/@john/coda-airtable
Is it really that much different when it comes to searching? I use notion and I know that it sometimes freezes even though my laptop is a high-specs one.
Gosh, you have my total respect to have presented these ten deep distinctions between the two softwares, of which I used to know and like Coda, and could never figure out Notion, even thought I like the Notion presenters better and I believe they do a better job of YT teaching. I suppose all we need next is 10 features where Notion is 10X better than Coda in 2023, so I can remain totally confused. They are both moving so fast it's hard to keep up. However, in reality, that formula editor, with its ability to write clear readable code trumps all other features. Notion users would lust after that capability FOR SURE!
Thanks! 3 things notion is currently better than coda: 1) It has syntax highlighting code block 2) usable mobile app 3) The code and paragraph block is really treated as a block. (in coda, the code and paragraph block is NOT really treated as a block).
Nice video - is there bi-directional linking yet in Coda? 6 months ago that was my one major need so Notion linking allows my 2nd brain setup - initially I preferred Coda dashboards and graphs. I have other tools for table lookups, Coda testing last year didn't handle large tables - all about personal use cases certainly like some setups in Coda - Airtable though for tables hands down, syncing with Notion for me for docs suits my needs - I don't agree Coda is good for tasks, happy to find out if that has changed with this new release? But their sales staff when we had a requriements meeting advised this was also the case in Nov-21 - I also had issues with connecting via API's last year, many updates broke the links and some data field names changes, Notion more robust from that point of view but i'm sure Coda will iron out that stuff as it becomes more stable
No bi-directional links yet in Coda (but we have a team working on this!). You can also @ mention a specific row anywhere your doc which kind of replicates bi-directional linking.
This is a bit outdated now. Notion now has full support for forms and buttons. I like your comparison of how much easier it is to work with relations in Coda (more like conventional coding) but I think you should state up front, not at the end of your video, that you are a Coda employee.
@@al-chen I am really torn! I have just discovered Notion after being an old soul of OneNote, but Coda is really a cut above! And the price is also great for my freelance gigs. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for sharing, I have been using Notion for a few years now only heard of Coda today, I’m definitely going to signup as the Form function, currently a 3rd party solution for Notion; I understand is native to Coda… + rich DB logic capabilities sounds amazing, thx 🙏 again keep up the good work to team Coda….competition with Notion gives better value to end users ✋ 🎤
One question for you Al. How many rows of data can Coda handle in table without slowing down or breaking? Can it work as good as Google Sheets for this?
Definitely in the several thousands! But like Google Sheets (and Notion), things do get slow if you try adding too much data. It's not meant to replace a traditional SQL database or anything.
Great video ! I use Notion on a daily basis and agree that formula's are a pain in the ass and require some crazy workaround to perform basic operations. Buttons certainly are a plus too. Funny you didn't mention speed though. Notion is a pain in that regard and their app is barely usable. Nor the lack of support of charts, something that's really missing in Notion IMO. Could you do a video on project management in Coda? Or link to one.
Thanks for the comment @Thomas! I was thinking about doing a speed comparison but I don't think I could've done a fair comparison since it depends on the size of your Coda doc/Notion workspace, the power of your laptop, etc. Speed is considered a feature at Coda and it's highly prioritized. See this community post as an example: community.coda.io/t/improvements-to-published-doc-speed/22936 In terms of project management, take a look through my TH-cam channel as I've published numerous videos on different aspects of project management. This is a relatively older video (you'll notice the look and feel of Coda in the video is different from what Coda is today), but shows some of the key ways teams use Coda for project management: th-cam.com/video/i0KxFK9tH7w/w-d-xo.html
Thanks, great comparison! Good I didn't get sold to Notion with all the hype around it, though I wish Coda mobile version was better. Virtually its unusable.
As a long-time notion user, when I found out about coda I got sick of the constant notion hype. It's cult-like, users get caught in the algorithm vortex and template sellers take advantage of this imo
I find this video *extremely* disingenuous. Yes, in the description you make the note of being a coda employee, but how many people read the description? The *only* reason I read it is because I know you're a coda employee and I wanted to see if you mentioned it. At least you did somewhere, I guess, but I note that you didn't say it at the outset of the video, which you should. I'm not going to waste too much time on this, but a good example is the way you highlight the formula editor is considerably irksome. It is not really all that long since coda only had a completely crappy formula editor. Yes, the new one is better but takes multiple steps to open (it should just be the default), and it ***still*** has the issue where you can spend a significant amount of time working on a formula, but when you close it, if an error is found in the formula, it reverts to the version before you started editing and YOU LOSE ALL YOUR WORK!!!!!! It is an ENORMOUS frustration. One has to get into the habit of copying the formula before closing, just in case. The 'auto-formatting' is rather poor and can't be undone (or at least it was the last time I played with coda). Do anything complex in your formulas and you can expect your doc to noticeably slow down. Anyway, I'm glad to have come across this video as with the release of coda 3.0 I was considering giving it another go, but this is a great and timely reminder not to, because the biggest issue I have with coda is the company itself, and this video is just one more reminder of it.
@@BishoyGerges That doesn't make sense. Why go off someone's opinion instead of the actual how-to itself? Adding and editing formulas is considerably easier in coda. A simple "=" anywhere (at the start of a block, over anywhere in a table, etc) instantly pulls up the formula editor. I'll stop there bc Rohan clearly didn't know what he was doing and gives an opinion off of emotions
@@HippieP629 agree with you that someone's opinion is not a substitution to one's hands-on something, but in the period when you don't have a lot of enough time to invest trying new tools, it's a wise decision to rely on some opinions ;-) Appreciate your comment and will try to give this tool another chance when I can
While I thought the majority of the video was fairly done, I agree he should have said he works for Coda during the first 1-2 minutes and not wait until the very end. And I think the headline / title was super misleading because only about a third or 1/4 of the features were 10x better in Coda, and about a third were not even 1x better in Coda: maybe 10% to 30% better. He literally says that the first 2 things are only a little better in Coda, yet the headline says all 10 things are 10x better in Coda. Even he is saying that the headline / title is false. I'd like to see a video by a Notion fan laying out the ways in which Notion is better.
Great video!! Thank you for this candid analysis

📝 *Coda vs. Notion:
1️⃣ 🧮 Easier formulas: Writing is simpler in Coda.
2️⃣ 📊 Advanced table functions: Coda formulas outperform Notion's.
3️⃣ 🤖 Automations: Coda automates tasks seamlessly.
4️⃣ 🔗 Third-party integrations: Coda integrates fully; Notion lags.
5️⃣ 🔘 Functional buttons: Coda buttons are interactive; Notion's are basic.
6️⃣ ✍️ Formula editor: Coda allows formatting with spaces and breaks.
7️⃣ 🔍 Detailed layouts: Coda customizes row views better.
8️⃣ 📈 Sorting animations: Coda visually highlights changes; Notion's are abrupt.
9️⃣ 💰 Cost savings: Coda's pricing favors larger teams.
🔟 📋 Native forms*: Coda offers forms; Notion uses third-party solutions.
The speed of search and exporting options made me switch. The 3.0 updates are fantastic!
Awesome!
