Hey there software lovers! Those of you who follow my channel know that I LOVE Notion! In today's video I show you a Notion competitor that I have been coming to enjoy: Coda! Coda from a technical stand point, definitely outperforms Notion. But, from a usability perspective Notion fights back. Both Notion and Coda are great software, but which one will win this race?

Just in case someone is stopping by here in 2023 and beyond, Coda just released 4.0, which, among expected feature and AI updates, changes the pricing structure to be more personal-use friendly. They removed size limits for docs and added two-way database syncing which are probably the biggest factors to kick them up a notch.
I still like notion and trying to evaluate which would work best for my use case, but thought that would be good to add if you end up here! Cheers!

Excellent comparison! Thess are the two to compare, yet too few bother to do it. Long-time Notion user, easing my way into Coda. Getting harder to deny the bigger capabilities. The one knock on Coda that keeps me from switching completely is that Notion makes it super easy to export your data to markdown/html with a single click, and Coda requires manual copy/paste doc by doc. It's a Hotel California approach and IMO it's fatal to those who value tranferability.

This is a very good overview! I actually prefer Coda in almost all aspects, it is far superior to Notion. But there are 2 major differences:
    1. Notion's mobile app is significantly better than Coda's.
    2. Coda is very limited in the free version regarding the number of formulas, buttons or views. It happens very quickly that you reach the limit of 50 objects in the document, which has never happened to me with Notion.

    • @ProductiveDude

@@ProductiveDude I love Notion on the desktop, but I think Notion mobile is truly terrible. It's reallly flaky, animations are janky, and navigation is completely broken.
They need to rebuild it as a native app, instead of an Electron, React frankenstein.

Thanks very much for making me discover Coda. I've been using Notion for a while and I love it. But sometimes I wished it could do more. So imagine my delight when I watched this video. @Cody Correct... or I'm waiting until Coda can get their act together a bit more in terms of speed and reliability on my phone and computer.
The other thing to note is, I DO use Coda personally. I don't tend to upload as many videos about Coda right now though.
I use it for my meal planner on a weekly basis. I've also built an amazing workout tracker in Coda with my brother for his workouts.
It's certainly capable I just found that the ui and the reliability is only 85% of the way there. I need it to be at least 98% of the way there.

CODA Seems better for techies who want precise control over more details. The notion app. seems better for starters who just want to take notes, store, and retrieve information. Based on everything that I have seen heard and read so far, the difference is like piloting the airplane vs. being a passenger on the airplane who can do various things as they travel. It simply depends on how you prefer to travel to your destination. For me, I DON'T want to pilot the plane. I just want to get there in one piece as painlessly as possible.

A good analogy. I'm debating about continuing to try and introduce coda (or any doc platform) to my boss. I think the doc (coda, notion, etc) system is invaluable but I think the migration from spreadsheets & files everywhere to a doc system sadly might be too big of a leap

Introducing a new application into an organization is a big step for a small company (60 employees), so this review was gold for me. Really good video. I’ve used notion daily for a couple of yrs for everything. If I had a time machine i def would’ve spent that time in coda. The constant need for workarounds to do what other platforms do natively, lack of development, etc for a company “worth billions” has been frustrating to say the least. There’s tons of notion individual devs now to make up for the lack of native development. At first I was excited about the community but now that I know how to use the platform, I don’t need the hype.
A big thing I would’ve talked about in this review are the coda packs. Makes s big difference..

    Mann, Listen!
I had just started using Notion about 3-weeks ago based on my timeless goal of "finding the perfect note taking app" - I'm coming from Evernote, OneNote, TreeDBNotes, WinOrganizer etc...
Using notion I was able to actually prototype an application I've been meaning to write for myself for over a year now (I'm a .NET developer by profession), and was absolutely satisfied, with seeing my idea coming to fruition (in Notion), so I've been pretty impressed and happy using Notion.
My brother-in-law came over for Thanksgivings, and as always we were talking about (his passion), stock trading. He was showing me his method of researching stocks, and he had pulled out a batch of hand written notes.
I immediately mentioned he should be using Notion for working with his data!
We sat down and I started teaching him how to translate his written tables into Notion databases.
We got down to a requirement of his where he uses 3-financial pages to study a stock's performance - I created an additional linked table that would hold the 3-related URL fields.
Since he was using 3-related pages for his research, it began to become a chore to copy/paste in 3 separate URLs for each stock symbol - he started asking if there as a way to generate those URLs based on the stock symbol.
Ultimately within Notion, the short answer was NO, Notion doesn't allow formulas to generate URLs, AND there also isn't a way for the formula generated URL text to be placed into the URL fields...
Then just TODAY, this video came across my dashboard - again MANN, LISTEN!
I immediately text my brother-in-law "There's a NEW Sheriff in town - CODA!.."
I'm working with Coda now, and it FEELS AND LOOKS SO MUCH MORE PROFESSIONAL, when comparing the two applications side-by-side!
Also looking at all the available, FREE add-ons - including __retrieving Stock information based on stock symbols__, and, additionally watching some of the training videos, my socks were blown off!
TLDR, I will be immediately switching from Notion to Coda - it has the power I need, and as a software developer by profession, Coda - has the additional abilities and features I absolutely appreciate - I will be going Pro pronto!

Great video. I'd like to add that although Notion is easier to pick up, if you know you want to use coda eventually then start with Coda as the skills do not transfer.

    • @ProductiveDude
      @ProductiveDude  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I’d say my skills transferred alright. If you understand the concept of Notion; Linking data, Formulas, etc.
The only difference is, when you start using Coda you can do more and there’s a slightly different way to go about it.
The syntax for the formulas is different, the names of things are different, but that’s about it. Coda just has a lot of extra features that Notion doesn’t.
      Edit:
I’d also like too add that Coda uses a different document structure. In Notion every database row you add gets a page automatically this is the only option. In coda you can’t create a document as a page, however, they do have a notes column that you can add to enter any notes you have and when you associate a table to it you’re able to see the table by clicking on a specific type of column called “canvas”.

It depends on your preference. Coda can do way more, if you’re tech savvy I’d go with Coda. If your willing to learn I’d go with Coda. The formulas are way easier to use and way more powerful.
However, if you want a simple app that’s much easier to learn and your focus is more on writing than databases, I’d recommend Notion.
The meal planner I built for instance is a lot better in Coda but I’d rather write in Notion.
They both do some pretty cool things.

@@ProductiveDude Thank you for your helpful advice! I think I'll just test and see how I "feel" about them, both by building some documents and bases. Because comparing rationally, both have their advantages and disadvantages.
My use is twofold, for writing (creative + freelancing, as that is my job!) and for freelancing (managing projects and data). I love writing, but I also love tech, and... databases ;D
I do a lot of data management (references, lists, tasks,...). I used to use (and love) Airtable, but I'm thinking about leaving it for a more complete and universal tool.

@@gs_f Notion wins for writing, coda for managing projects and data. However you can write in coda, but doing complex data/app style work in notion can be simply impossible due to lack of features, depending on your goals. I agree you should try both out - build out some of the workflows you will be using in each and then make a decision because it will take a lot of time to become proficient in either one so you don't want to be switching later on.
We use coda for our business and have custom documents that handle everything from hr, financials, sales, project management, contract generation, and other miscellaneous things. I tried out both notion and coda about a year and a half ago and coda was clearly the only choice given our needs. Notion, at least at that time, was more of a replacement for things like Evernote.

@@osafoca Thank you very much for this thorough and very interesting review. I'm testing both, but I'm about to go deeper into Coda rather than Notion, despite some advantages like the large Notion community, tutorials, and other details, as the export capabilities (bad experience to get out of Evernote !). I guess none of them are perfect!

Thank you very much for this video! It's super helpful. I have a concern with all of these apps that nobody is talking about. Is the data secure or can it be hacked? Is there a way to set up a double-step verification or something like that? I understand none of them has end-to-end encryption, so why aren't we all worried about cyber security? I would appreciate any insight or video on this topic

Hey Ana, this is certainly something to consider when choosing an application.
Here are Coda's security terms. They seem pretty good: coda.io/trust/security
Here are Notion's security terms. They also seem good in terms of encryption: www.notion.so/security

Hi, I want to know in your opinion, I have a company of 50 people, and I want to build a knowledge base, and build some SOP and guidelines for staff to browse, which is the better option , CODA or NOTION. I am not that tech savvy

Coda has more functionality and automation, however, Notion is more streamlined and straightforward.

Just asking Productive Dude, is this video sponsered from Coda?

    • @peterd7368
      @peterd7368 ปีที่แล้ว

He says in the video that he thinks Notion is the better choice for most users; and that Notion still has 80% of the features that Code has and that the majority of users won't need those other 20%, and will prefer the faster learning curve and ease of use of Notion. So it seems like an unfair cheap shot to imply that he got paid by Coda. If he did, he wouldn't say that most users should choose Notion.

Coda cannot sync with Readwise yet

    • @ProductiveDude
      @ProductiveDude  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Readwise looks great! Sad that Coda doesn’t integrate with them yet - but if you want the Coda features you can just import Readwise to Notion then convert your Notion pages into a Coda workspace in under 1 minute. Just use the link in my pinned comment to see how you can do that.
I think you could get a lot out of Coda with your Readwise data. Use the Graph or Word Cloud feature in Coda, it could be pretty cool.
In this example you’d kind of be using Notion as the toll booth between Readwise and Coda.
Just an idea of course, let me know what you think… 💭🤔
