I love every rendition of this song I've ever heard. But this one hits so different. Seeing sailors in their whites performing it so well and with such evident pleasure... 🥰
Although its origins it’s not fully known its believe to be based a wellers rock which is in the Otago harbour. Most likely written by Scottish expats.
"I love they are sound..." (DEEP SIGH) Yet another one who can't get "there," "they're," and "their"---which is the correct "their" needed here---straight.
This song had such a big hype and I heard sooo many versions of it, but this one is my absolute favourite. The lead singer is doing a fantastic job. He clearly feels the song a lot, and this little bit of vocal playfulness just makes it so authentic. You can also see and feel that everyone else involved is just really invested in doing a great job here. Very well done, sailors!
I've been a member of the renaissance festival community for 38 years. I've heard a lot of music, variations, and bands over the years. Even now, my husband plays in a traditional Irish Céilí band, with folk tunes, shanties, and other music from the British Isles thrown in. Your version of "the Wellerman" gave me goosebumps. I agree with another comment that said seeing and hearing actual Navy members in dress Whites (and great voices) made a huge difference in how they see the song. I know that your version is the one for me. Thank you for your hard work and your service.
this is like thee coolest job ever??? you get to be part of an institution like the Navy and wear the uniform but still get to express yourself and show your talent while looking incredible.
1:15 in some versions they say she took that ship in tow, the sailors were the ones following, i love either version and enjoyed this thoroughly, liked subscribed and commented
Thanks to God, Navy never lose faith to meet challenge and never fallen to darkness. Go to the ocean of stars and the stars of the ocean as hopeful journey.
Brilliant stuff! I salute you sailors. One thing though, I don't understand why your navy doesn't allow you to have beards... Other navies, NATO navies, allow it.
The USS Constitution is 'underway, under full sail' about once every one or two decades, but I suppose they could do it during one of the annual turnaround cruises.
The Germans version completely removes all references to whaling. They literally ruined this song by removing its historic context. The German version is shamefully “woke” and they should be ashamed for doing it. It is an insult to the tradition of sea shanties and an historical and musical abomination.
@@douglaszare1215 because they changed the song, its not ignoring everything they have done, its criticizing the one thing in the context of the conversation, you can criticize a point without bringing the entirety of history into the argument, its a historical shanty, that should remain in its original context, we know we dont need to whale anymore, but we can enjoy the original shanty without ramming modern beliefs about it down peoples throats
I would like to request the following song: "Think Of Me" from The Phantom of the Opera Preferably, Amy Broadbent would be the best singer. By the way, I watched the video of The United States Air Force Band - "Think Of Me" from The Phantom of the Opera. It's good to hear this sung by real sailors.
Are *any* of those “sailors” enlisted?

Except the song is British and tells of the life of merchant sailors, not navy ones. To me this is a bit of a joke and the American accents are weird.
@@williamrees6662agreed, they jump on every bandwagon they can 😂😂😂😂
@@williamrees6662 and these are not even sailors! they're a choir
Outstanding vocal of the shanty. Nice to see traditional songs recorded and performed so well! Great job!
My favorite version is from Nathan Evans and Santiano!
A catchy 18th century whaling folk song from New Zealand. Great version!!
Goes back to British-born Weller brothers Edward, George and Joseph, an later a whaling ship called the "Billy o' Tea"....
Yeah. I believe it's Scottish
1900s and it's not a sea shanty
Although its origins it’s not fully known its believe to be based a wellers rock which is in the Otago harbour. Most likely written by Scottish expats.
The Wellers were suppliers to whalers around Otago of NZ in the 1800's, that is what this song is about
I love they're sound as a group what perfect harmony

How do we have rock bands and jazz quartets but not a official Navy Sea Shanty .... CNO be the change you ask of us!
