Wellerman Lyrics
There once was a ship that put to sea
The name of the ship was the Billy of Tea
The winds blew up, her bow dipped down
O blow, my bully boys, blow
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguin' is done
We'll take our leave and go
She had not been two weeks from shore
When down on her a right whale bore
The captain called all hands and swore
He'd take that whale in tow
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguin' is done
We'll take our leave and go
Before the boat had hit the water
The whale's tail came up and caught her
All hands to the side, harpooned and fought her
When she dived down low
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguin' is done
We'll take our leave and go
No line was cut, no whale was freed
The Captain's mind was not of greed
And he belonged to the whaleman's creed
She took that ship in tow
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguin' is done
We'll take our leave and go
For forty days, or even more
The line went slack, then tight once more
All boats were lost, there were only four
But still that whale did go
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguin' is done
We'll take our leave and go
As far as I've heard, the fight's still on
The line's not cut and the whale's not gone
The Wellerman makes his regular call
To encourage the Captain, crew, and all
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguin' is done
We'll take our leave and go
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguin' is done
We'll take our leave and go

There is something about several men harmonizing their voices perfectly that sends shivers down my spine. Adding a simple and constant beat to the chorus only amplified the awesome tone.

There's a trend where if you sing the song it brings the dead pirates to life. Everyone is making skits out of it
"The song's lyrics describe a whaling ship called the "Billy o' Tea" and its hunt for a right whale. The song describes how the ship's crew hope for a "wellerman" (an employee of the Weller brothers, who owned ships that brought provisions to New Zealand whalers) to arrive and bring them supplies of luxuries, with the chorus stating "soon may the wellerman come, to bring us sugar and tea and rum." According to the song's listing on the website New Zealand Folk Song, "the workers at these bay-whaling stations (shore whalers) were not paid wages, they were paid in slops (ready made clothing), spirits and tobacco." In the whaling industry in 19th-century New Zealand, the Weller brothers owned ships that would sell provisions to whaling boats. The chorus continues with the crew singing of their hope that "one day when the tonguin' is done we'll take our leave and go". "Tonguing" in this context refers to the practice of cutting strips of whale blubber to render into oil. Subsequent verses detail the captain's determination to bring in the whale in question, even as time passes and multiple whaling boats are lost in the struggle. In the last verse, the narrator describes how the Billy o' Tea is still locked in an ongoing struggle with the whale, with the wellerman making a "regular call" to encourage the captain and crew."
Note: This isn't my origianal words, its from another comment i just wanted to spread the information to inform others more on the context.
Technically you are correct for the later definition of tonguing, however the original definition of tonguing was processing the whale's tongue to get the blubber out.

Pretty sure its a scotich accent
Very good, Evanss
I believe that not only me who think that the song feel so fresh and joy. The lyrics are simple yet very good, so we can enjoy like we're in the sea, take a sip of tea with a warm air. So healing.

so touching
The lyrics are not that peaceful tho. It is about a crew of whale hunter, and the fight between them and the whale. Whether they are successful or not, they are too exhausted so they have to wait for another ship to “save” them, that’s where the “tea” part kick in. The song it’s playful because it supposes to cheer the crew up and give them hope that the safe team can find them, that’s why all they can do is to wait.

A few songs ever capture the true spirit of the culture they are trying to illustrate - this is one of them.
Any other examples of song similar to this? Thanks!
@@ivanaradic7873 Fiesta Pagana from Mago de Oz. The song talks about the towns opressed by the church during the renacentist era, with the instrumental giving it a special vibe. Almost like something you would hear on a RPG
