  • this short video talks in detail about how to shell a part, and more specifically what to do if the shell fails. It's a bit "talking heavy" but take notes... there is a lot here to help you get your work done.

Great stuff Kyle. I'd certainly agree that having simpler starting surfaces would make Shell work much better - but sometimes you just have to work with what you've got. When Shell fails a result is generally achievable with a little bit of work.

yep, something to start with is way better than "just won't do it" which is how a parasolid kernel modeler fails. Shell gets a lot of hate, some of it deserved, but IMO it's good parts are often overlooked.

After I learned what single span was, my surfacing life got 1000x better.

It seems like it's .better to shell outward. May require more pre-computation.True?

not necessarily, you still have to offset, trim and rejoin each surface in the model.

Do Rhino have asset library like sketchup warehouse where people share their model?

no, but we can import just about anything from any 3d model site like turbosquid, sketchup warehouse etc..

Better to shell outward. Less failure. Correct?

you'd have to plan for that from the beginning. Most folks built the exterior and shell inward. Doing what you are suggesting would change the shape and dimensions of the part. plus you face the same issue with self intersections, just generally in fewer places.
