  • In this latest @SimplyRhino3D video Phil Cook, Simply Rhino's senior Rhino trainer, looks at SubD Crease which is new in Rhino 8.
Summary - SubD Crease introduces weighted creases which allow for soft, defined transitions to be added to a SubD form without increasing complexity. In this video Phil starts by explaining the new command on a simple example and comparing this to the older Rhino 7 workflow, before moving on to a practical example of an automotive sketch model. Here, Phil demonstrates adding and controlling character lines to the model and how the new SubD Crease command allows for easy iteration at the design stage. There’s also some general tips on SubD layout and creating a custom display mode.
Video created by Simply Rhino - Simply Rhino are the most popular Rhino 3D Reseller in the UK, they offer Rhino and key Rhino plugin license sales (with expert support included) alongside Rhino and Grasshopper training courses and private, bespoke by-the-hour training for companies and individuals.

3:05 I'm relatively new to Rhino and I've been looking for this functionality for quite a bit now. For me however, that square bounding box/subd flat mode edges are not visible when I have the subd in smooth mode. Therefore I cannot apply the subd crease. How do you get this to show up?

Hi, In the example of the single SubD Surface, use ‘_PointsOn’ (or shortcut F10) to turn on the points (vertices) of the SubD surface. Next, select a corner point and run ‘_Crease’ - hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Hi there, When you left click on an object, you’ll select the object in it’s entirety. To select the individual faces or edges you can use ‘Sub-Object Selection’ On a PC, hold down Control + Shift keys and left click on a Face or Edge. On a Mac it’s Command + Shift. Does this help?

This looks great, but Its a shame that the value is a percentage and not a dimension.

Hi, SubD Creases do not create a fillet with a radius - they are more analogous to a G2 ‘BlendSrf’ in that the radius is constantly changing. If you require a dimension along and Edge (so let’s say 200mm from one end) you can use ‘DupEdge’ to duplicate the edges you need and ‘Divide’ to divide the resulting curve by distance or number of segments.

And? What's the point? Now it is simply a native part of Rhino.
