Agreed ! She’s an unparalleled comedic genius. I LOVED her on SCTV and in Christopher Guest films - especially this one - and in all of her other ongoing work. I’ve never, ever seen an actor nail the behavior / thought and speech patterns of a drunk like she does here. And it’s all improvised. Yes, she absolutely deserves a permanent crown for her service to all of us !
"Medicine Man not go near Dances With Stumpy" is one of the most brilliant lines I've ever heard. If Eugene really did ad lib that in the moment, he's an absolute genius. (Well, he's a genius anyway...)
@@srconradI love when they do that. It is one mark of a great comedy vs. a good comedy, when you think a scene is over and they sneak in a line right at the end, or even after the scene has ended.
Me too, from the time I discovered him on “Fernwood 2-Nite” when I snuck out of bed on school nights as a young kid to watch it. He stole the show effortlessly. He was never “hit or miss” - always nailed it, and exceeded all expectations of hilarity among even the pickiest of viewers. His improvisation in Guest films (the scene above is a classic example) showcased this amazing gift perfectly. Cannot believe he’s gone.

She is so good! 🤣 She is obviously not famous like the others in these movies but she is so great with her reactions in this and Best In Show. I love her.
We need to also give it up for Linda Kash, playing Mrs. Allan Pearl. Her stunned discomfort is spot on and it makes this scene all the more realistic feeling.
That's basically his stock-in-trade and you never know when the next one is coming. Martin Mull said it was like trying to follow someone to a party at night without turn-signals.
I met him at a Meet and Greet screening of Best in Show at the Redford Theatre in Redford Michigan. He was the most down to earth person i've ever met.
@@90sNickfan91 The kind of work he got I would imagine requires a easy going, nice personality. Saw an interview with Christopher Guest, he said something to the effect when making these films, if any player starts to be egotistical, they are done, it would not work.
As brilliant the umpteenth time as it was the first time I saw this at the cinema. Bravo to Christopher Guest, Eugene Levy and their superb ensemble cast!!
Why don't you get one of those "Throat Enlargements." I'm replying to a comment that's almost a decade old, so it might not immediately click, but I figure you won't mind re-watching this gem one hundred and ONE times to "get" my advice, lol!
Simply stated, it's just four brilliant actors turning in one of the funniest senes in cinema history. Every word, every gesture goes right to the mark.
I saw Catherine O'Hara a few years ago, in a CB2 store on Sunset. I regret not getting a pic, but we both looked rough (no makeup, dressed in sweats); I wasn't feeling photogenic and I guessed maybe neither was she. But it was really cool. I'm a huge fan.
One of the brilliant (though dark) little touches in this movie is the way we keep seeing flashes of the control freak hiding behind Ron's goofy, affable veneer.
OMFG, I began looking for a fav clip from a half-remembered "For Your Consideration" and am now going to finally commit to my once halfhearted goal of watching watching ALL of this guy's (the director) movies!! I love Catherine O'Hara so much, for one thing.
Catherine O'Hara is fantastic and all, but I just can't get over how Eugene Levy pulled that hysterical last line out of his pocket. "Medicine man not go near 'Dances With Stumpy!'" Where did he come up with that??
On man I love trivia, and did not know that. Linda is a real cutie! I love this scene, it is so natural, not as though they're acting at all. The "it's not you, it's me," from Seinfeld breaks me up every time. Thanks for the info.
Fred Willard.... funniest guy esp. in the Mock-umentaries. "How about if we just splash the whole group with water. and every body goes WOT HOPPENED?" or... give the bloodhound a Sherlock Holmes hat and pipe. Priceless stuff.
"They went to Peking- where they make the ducks", and "...they say, the food is not as good over there- you can't get a sauce as thick and sweet like here". brilliant
I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't catch this detail until Roger Ebert pointed it out: the way you hear one character ask, "How did you find this place?" -- as the camera is panning down the enormous neon sign on the outside of the restaurant.
Catherine O"Hara does the best drunk scenes in the business. Her other one is in "For Your Consideration". It may have been in the DVD extras, don't remember but it was unbelievable.
LOL there's so much subtle comedy going on here, "Chop Suey" 0:05 "we've been coming here for many, many years" Wife says "Every Thursday" and still can't work Chop Sticks ...
I know that's a 3 year old comment, but search "well pissed father". It's from an 80's British film. The drunk acting blows my mind every time I see it. You are right though, Catherine O'hara is fantastic.
actors trying to act drunk very rarely do it realistically. catherine o'hara is a GENIUS, and for its brevity this is the best drunk scene i've ever seen, even better than lucille ball in yours, mine & ours. i think catherine o'hara IS one of the greats, with lucille ball, betty white, madeline kahn, gilda radner and cloris leachman.
This almost went wrong because Catherine went in a different direction at first by suggesting he had an enlargement ("it's not minor anymore") but who else but Fred would invent a penis reduction premise? She plays along because it's ridiculous and a better "Yes, and..." and we get comedy gold.
_nobody_ can play "Drunk" like Catherine O'Hara. that woman is a queen, and should be honored as such by the combined national governments of Earth.
Agreed ! She’s an unparalleled comedic genius. I LOVED her on SCTV and in Christopher Guest films - especially this one - and in all of her other ongoing work. She was great in Orange County
Agreed! She absolutely nails it -- most people completely overdo "drunk."
Peter O toole plays a good drunk.
When they cut to her drinking the wine I knew magic was about to happen.
Catherine O'Hara is right up there with Madeline Kahn and Cloris Leachman.
And even Lily Tomlin. She's that good.
AT LEAST!!!!!
Add Julia Louis Dreyfus and you have my Mount Rushmore.
She is better than Leachman easily, probably better than Kahn too. Very Underrated.
Up there with Meryl Streep, imo. But also comedic genius
All four of them are just so good. It’s like watching an incredible jazz quartet move as one.
All four of them nailed it. and it's even better that this was all just improv. LEGENDS.
i love the delay when catherine says "eeeeew" after the other guy is already talking about something else.
Never noticed this! Absolutely brilliant

Let's not forget Linda Kash as the wonderfully deadpanning, embarrased wife of Doctor Pearl. Her re-actions greatly enriched the comedy of the scene.
and has the luscious melon breasts.
There's so much going on in her eyes when Fred talks about getting penis reduction surgery.
Her face at 2:11...priceless

it really did 😂😂😂

I love it later in the movie when she says she needed to nurse Joshy bc she was about to bust 😂😂
Nobody delivers a horrifying line with quite the same dumb innocence as Fred. Much love and respect
He was a great one. RIP Mr. Willard
That whole scene was uncomfortably funny
NAILED IT!

"Have you tried the egg rolls? Unbelievable."
"Medicine Man not go near Dances With Stumpy."
Brilliant deadpan and improvisation by Eugene Levy.

Toronto pumped out a LOT of great comedians over the years. O'Hara and Levy are amazing.
SCTV was so funny.
Catherine O'Hara should win a Nobel Prize for Comedy. If there isn't such a thing, they need to make one just for her.
He went to Peking, you know, where they make the ducks?
Catherine O'Hara is possibly my favorite comedic performer of all-time.
"...have you tried the egg rolls? Unbelievable..."
best "change of subject" line

Catherine O'Hara is fantastic and all, but I just can't get over how Eugene Levy pulled that hysterical last line out of his pocket. "Medicine man not go near 'Dances With Stumpy!'" Where did he come up with that??
