    This is a common sound for the GEMA "World engine" some manufacturers added hydrolic valves to quiet the engine. KIA said " we don't care " and left it standard.

    I had the same problem. I don't believe that the recommended oil is the best in certain climates and judging by the amount of people sharing the same experiences, I believe it even more. Once the engine starts moving and the oil gets warm enough it finally makes it up to the valves and quiets the "tapping" noise. I threw in some Lucas oil treatment with my oil change and it worked for me. I did try motor honey, but it was too thick for cold mornings and it actually took longer for the tapping to go away, so I don't recommend it. I'd say either Lucas or Royal Purple. Valve slapping is not good and over time it will cost you unless it is prevented.

    @andrewziegler2608 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Sounds like timing chain tensioner. It uses oil pressure to work. so when you rev it up it is applying force on the chain but it’s week so when the RPMs are low it can’t do it’s job. Pull the valve cover and check chain tension

    @ToyotaCelicaDude1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I have a 2012 forte with the same noise. It sounds horrible but it isn't lethal. It's just piston slap. These engines are notorious for this, especially when cold. It's not gonna cause your engine to fail tho. Just make sure you use genuine Kia/Hyundai oil filters, they have a special valve in them that shuts flow to the filter off when cold.

    Same issue here, 101k miles. I got mine to sound a LOT better by putting Schaefers Moly E.P. in it. It coats the walls of the engine and quiets it down quite a bit. I'll put a before and after video on my page. I have no doubts I will get my Kia to at least 175+.

    Yeah generally you don't have to worry about the timing chain very much, but the guide for the timing chain (I guess, from my research) is kind of one of the issues but generally isn't too big of a deal..
    Also, you can do some lifter adjustments as is needed but if it's running smooth, the mileage is good, the oil is clean, all that good stuff. Then it'll probably be alright for quite a while.
    Naturally, you want to make sure that you're getting oil to the top end, lol, but yeah, I've been trying to decide what I want to do with mine and I'm probably just going to pop the valve cover and do some measurements.
    I have not looked for a follow-up video but if you did find a solution, definitely post a reply pin a comment at the top, etc. 😊

    The exact same noise on my 2010 Forte. It's just under 113k. I've been hearing it since it hit 86k and I had it in KIA multiple times since, because of it. They keep telling me it's normal to hear it during cold starts and more predominant during winter (midwest native). So far, nothing is wrong with my car (fingers crossed). It runs and drives fine... just the noise after start up.

    My 2010 forte does this too, has 135,000 miles on it, got it used. Sounds like its going to come apart or something lol. I used to have a saturn vue that made noise and it was the timing chain and tensioner. I had to take my kia to the dealership because it was having weird electrical issues. They had it for the whole day and had trouble duplicating the problems. They ended up replacing the alternator. While it was there I had the oil changed and what not and I asked them about the noise. They said it is pretty normal for this car. It just has a noisy engine is all. I was worried it had some sort serious internal issue and they said nope, it was fine. It is just the design of the engine. Not going to lie it still scares the crap out of me and as soon as I can get out of this loan I am going to trade it in on something different.

With my car at cold start I leave it idling to the point when the revs goes down to 1000rpm and then drive. 5-10minutes driving it the noise is away. Figured it was common. • @joejones6968
    @joejones6968 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yes, Everybody. ..it is the timing chain getting worn, use a more heavier grade oil, like 10w30, or even better, strait 30w, the noise will not completely go silent, but will quiet it down by allot.
    Guys one thing to remember, is, if your odometer is showing high milage, well, don't forget about what is known as "invisible miles" from the vehicle sitting and idling, is.. like at drive through, or stop lights, or sitting running making you-tube video's...etc ...etc, That actually will put a strain on the engine to properly keep all moving parts lubricated within pressure specifics.
    Nothing wrong with engine other then it is getting worn down, they don't stay new forever.

    I don't think that the noise goes away when the engine is revved. Sounds to me like revving the engine doesn't affect it but the sound gets drowned out by the sound of the revving engine.
    My car started doing this after getting an oil change at a quick lube shop. I like the suggestion that the wrong filter may have been installed at that time.
    Just a side note - today sitting in traffic I decided to turn my interior fan on. When I did, the radiator fan cut in and the chugging/ticking noise got louder. Made me consider that the noise may be caused by a problem with the belt system. Could that make sense?

    My 2010 with same engine, makes exactly same sound. It started around 50 k miles, and it’s at 103 k now and still sounds the same. I’m told when these engines were built, they were not designed with the piston skirts to short, and wobble around a little. Strange thing is it don’t use any oil between 6,000 mile oil changes. Yes people will say that’s to many miles between changes, however the new oil produced can more than take it and more miles. I have work on car since 1978. I have a 2012 Kia forte with the 2.0, same issue. It is usually a horrible case of piston slap. From what I've seen, it isn't super lethal, but then again, from all of Kia/Hyundai's recalls lately. I wouldn't be surprised if it was lethal. I will never purchase another Kia/Hyundai. • @Zyo117

      Judging by comments, if you were into mechanics you could replace the rod bearings (which cause the piston to touch the side of the cylinder) and replace the oil pump with a higher pressure one to prevent them wearing out again. Assuming it's the rod bearings, but if it sounds like a tank, well...

    I have a 2012 kia sportage lx. It does the same thing. It does seem to lessen the first 10 or so minutes of driving but I drive 37 one way for work. Hiway miles. And by the time I get home the ticking get loud again. I feel embarrassed when at a stop light because it sounds like a diesel and can only imagine some people hear it look and see its not a diesel and are thinking the motor is about to blow. It's only four years old with 88,000 miles on it. I will try the suggestions and hopefully report back.

    I have used friction reducers as oil additive and the noise is gone... really.
    EZI or Liquimoly Ceratech are fine at every oil change.
    I tried using oil from different manufacturers only and had this noise. it seems that the oil only is not capable of eleminating the nose and had to add an additive.
    hope you try and tell us the results.

    • @ToyotaCelicaDude1

      SAME HERE! I use Full synthetic 5w-30 and Schaefers Moly E.P. in mine, sound is virtually gone, just a small amount of pinging. Also, ALWAYS use a Kia/Hyundai oil filter in this car, the filters have a thermostat in them to prevent oil from flowing through the filter while cold (weak oil pumps)
      Edit: My engine is the 2.0, the 2.4s have issues with spinning bearings, the 2.0 suffers from the notorious but much less deadly piston slap.

      Mine now is 220,000 km on it. 1.6l. without any problems until now. But at that stage in engine life you have to do some maintenance other than oil change and add additives.
      You have to remove the air manifold and clean/scrub the dirt and sludge out of the four intakes valves. You may need to do the same for the exhaust as well. Change the timing chain and gears running on them. In addition to the spring loaded on it.
      This may restore the engine sound and do better fuel consumption.
      Currently i am using 5-w30 bizol G+. It is a German oil proven high quality and performance with me.

      Try purchasing one of those extended car warranties through a 3rd party. That's what we did, we paid for a few months and then went to the kia dealer and had them go through the engine because we have that same knocking noise. The only thing we paid was the 500 dollar deductible. Just don't tell the company you get the warranty from that its making noise before you get the warranty
