    Marvel's Avengers is a checkpoint in the 'Live Service' journey that this industry has been on this past generation. It showcases just how little progress has been made, because this thing is riddled with all the same issues that plagued pretty much every live service that came before it.

Look at FF16, it's led by the guy who flipped FF14 around to make them bank. No way they'd miss that chance of doing it properly. Crystal Dynamics need to be held responsible and if its a case of SE forced them to do this, they should say so.

      Naquin Green damn you really went on about and rant about the game lol I agree of some of those things but personally the story was great and the game is so much fun! When you learn how to evade projectiles, parrying, combat variation. The game becomes hella fun and also a challenge. I can't wait for the future of it. It has so much potential if they do the new characters justice like the first 6

    • @juanpedro_mov7372
      @juanpedro_mov7372 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Naquin Green First of all I'm not a fan of Online/Live service games. I've never played fortnite or Apex or Overwatch. The only online games I have played are 2 (ok maybe more than 2 but when I say play I mean playing for years) and those are GTA Online which btw is definitely a game I come back on whenever I feel like just messing around with it and the other was a mobile game of Marvel named Marvel Contest of champions and that game I left it for the sole reason because the astounding amount of time I spent on it. It is so fun but so much time consuming same with GTA Online I left it because I wanted to get everything and grinding while being fun it was so much time wasted. That's the reason why I don't like Online games. I just spend so much time on them and doesn't let me do other things I like or play other singleplayer games. I actually prefer singleplayer over online. I'd rather play a fully fletched, well done narrative than an Online game that never ends which is the reason I love this game. Now I know is not a masterpiece of a story but it was great, fun and interesting to see what will happen in the future because this is definitely not the last of the story. That's where my next point comes. The story is continuing in the future with each new character, all of them are gong to be an add on, FREE add on to the story and that's what convinced me.
      I definitely wanted this game to be an open world game like spiderman but with 6 characters instead, I actually said to myself I was going to play the singleplayer only but after realizing that the game is mostly multiplayer I tried it out and I loved it! So much so I think this is going to be my 3rd online game I'm gonna be playing for years to come if the future holds great things. I gotta say the thing that made me invested on the online aspect was that every new mission and character is going to be free. Then I was disappointed because of the "Battle pass" cards of each new character needed to be bought. Not much longer after that I realized you could buy them from credits you get by playing the game which btw I already have enough credits to buy 4 new battle pass from a character and the fact that I will get the units back makes me even more excited.
      The cosmetics are not a problem for me because I've never spend money for any game unless is a true DLC, I didn't spend any money on GTA online or MCoC on the years I played them and quite frankly I'm not going to do it on this one either, the game already has so many different costumes for each character so that's enough for me. I really want to see what the next character will turn out to be. I'm waiting for Kate bishop wich is coming later next month to see how the "new character system" works. I want to see how unique they are, how many costumes outside of the marketplace are going to be available and how much length is the new sets of missions also how unique environmentally speaking are. That's what's going to set foot on my continued playtime on this game. I hope I won't be disappointed.
      Overall the story could be better I totally agree with you, it was so short! It was a satisfying ending but felt it needed more character development and interactions however if the upcoming missions from each DLC will add to it then that just mean it will only get better. I love, no really I love the gameplay. The gameplay feels a little to not repetitive at all. The combos you can do, the powers you have, the uniqueness of each character, the different set of skills, the gear perks. I just love it. I can honestly say this is my dream come true regarding combat excluding gear, that's an extra. If they continue adding new and uniquely combat based characters I'm all in. I can't wait for Kate bishop and Hawkeye. I've been playing for almost a month since the early release because I got the Deluxe edition for it and I can confirm it has been a really entertaining experience. My favorite is Cap and it's great because he is my favorite avenger!
      No, I don't know much about SE. I've only played Sleeping dogs (Awesome game btw), Tomb Raider and Just Cause so yeah only single player games. I hope they don't abandon this game at least not until they release Blade, my favorite marvel character lol but yeah it is all up to them. They need to make us keep coming to it and release new content worth playing also fix a lot of bugs which is worth mentioning they have already fixed a great amount of them. This game has potential I feel it.

    • @juanpedro_mov7372
      @juanpedro_mov7372 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Naquin Green It's free to some extent. The content, mission, characters, locations are all free. Cosmetics, some are, some are not. They are also expensive I mean $14 for a flashy takedown. As I said the challenge cards can be completed by achieving daily and weekly challenges with each character. I have 60+% on each character's cards so I'm almost done with them. Those contain costumes, emotes and nameplates also a takedown and all other resources and loot. I like the incentive of playing each day to complete those challenges and also upgrading your character. It is free to play because you can have fun and improve your character without spending a single cent.

    • @juanpedro_mov7372
      @juanpedro_mov7372 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Naquin Green it's going to be more than 6 characters more. I believe they are going to release a new character with their own set of missions each month! Kate Bishop is coming October, Hawkeye is coming on November, there's rumors War Machine or Black Panther are coming on December. January and February could be any of the leaks and on March we'll get Spiderman us PS4 and PS5 players too. I really hope Spiderman will only be time exclusive tbh. As you can see we'll get more than 6 more characters. That's why I can't wait for the future DLC. It's like a mobile game with each month adding a new character but better because each character will have different costumes, takedowns, combat abilities, skill tree and even so personality and character development and they are free and won't have to grind or buy them. No you just have to log in the day it gets released and boom you can play with him or her. Although is funny because everyone is going to be using the new character and while playing Co-op you can't use the same character so I guess I'm gonna play solo most of the time at the first few days lol I really hope you enjoyed the game and the story eventually. Cheers bro

    Coming back to this review after playing Guardians of the Galaxy in 2021 is so depressing. Obviously the lessons from Avengers informed the design of Guardians, but if this game had been a 20-hour single player game that allowed you to play as different Avengers, it would have been awesome. It's almost as though releasing a live service game that demands tons of your time into a market that already is saturated, is hugely risky and doomed for failure unless you can create something that is innovative or truly impressive on some level that demands people switch over.
      Name recognition of Marvel characters alone isn't enough over time. Maybe it would be enough for a single-player focused short-term experience, but if you want to keep people around and therefore milk them of cash, you need to have a good game or at least one that is better in some ways versus alternatives to the point that it addicts people.

      My favorite review that brings it to a point was two sentences long: "Flying around in the suit was fun. There was just nothing to do"
      And that sums it up pretty well. Lack of meaningful content.
      And live service games are pretty much the example of where you need to add content on a frequent basis.
      You can't just put out the game and say "here is the game, we're done". You have to release additional content every couple months to keep people interested. But live service games also have the benefit of delivering content later. So if your game at release is only 80% done, but fine on a technical level, ship it and work on releasing the missing stuff asap.

      I really think Avengers was an impossible task since the capabilities off Hulk to Black Widow to Iron Man are so varied, it's impossible to make a single gameplay experience that is tuned to all of them. Batman and Spiderman have the advantage of only trying to capture the feeling of a single character, and they can craft the mechanics around that. In Avengers, that's impossible, so it was bound to feel a bit generic no matter what. This game isn't great, but I really fail to see how it could've been close to Spiderman or Batman even in ideal circumstances.

    19:43 "It's copied Destiny so effectively it will likely hold an appeal to that crowd" statements that aged poorly for 500. And the reason it aged poorly is simple: People who like games like destiny already have a game to play; it's called Destiny. "Live Services" are not the same as real games, they demand an immense time commitment and rely on investment both emotional and financial. If you like Dark Souls you'll eventually probably try Bloodborne, but the reason is because you WILL eventually be done with Dark Souls because it has an end, it has a point where you're inteneded to move on. It has New Game Plus to an insane degree but it is not designed so that the player is EXPECTED to play NG+, it's not designed for it to be played ad infinitum. It's got an actual end and leaves it up to the player when they want to stop after beating it. "Live Services" are not like this because they are designed to perpetually make money and for that to happen need people to play in perpetuity. This is not an inherently bad thing; Monster Hunter World is such a game but it also has an "end" and is less focused on keeping people "engaged" than it is on simply providing more content for players to come back to as they choose with how frequent seasonal events each bring back almost all if not every single past event quest, meaning players don't feel pressured to obsess over the game due to FOMO on said continuously added quests. Meanwhile compare to something like Warframe with Daily Standing caps, the Nightwave Battle Passes, special missions on rotation every few hours, daily logins with specific rewards at milestones such as 100, 300, etc, Relic Vaulting and Un-Vaulting,, timed boosters that follow real time regardless of whether you're logging in, etc. There are so many reasons to feel the need to check in and make some form of progress several times a week if not every day until it's part of your life's routine, and Warframe is if anything one of the more LENIENT examples compared to the likes of Destiny and it's copiers.
    In short: Multiple "Live Services" isn't feasible, and subsequently copying another live service to a T is absolutely not feasible, because anyone who actually dedicates themselves to such games simply won't have enough hours in the day to play multiple of them.

  • @Brainreaver79

      I think there's a world in which live service could've been good as well. I've played more games like League, R6, MHW, Fall BOIS, etc. in the last few years than even some games I would consider to be my favorites of all time like the Dark Souls games. There's a world in which Avengers was akin to Monster Hunter World, a game with massive free updates post launch, epic loot to grind, an extremely fun and rewarding endgame, and maybe eventually a huge paid DLC. Hell, the Avengers already have move sets, if they were spruced up and a bit more interesting they could've been like MHW's weapons with deep mastery for players who want to be a main of one weapon or wildly varying moves for players who want the best tool for any situation (Looking at my fellow Insect Glaive + Hunting Horn + Gunlance mains out there).
      Live service isn't necessarily bad, it just seems like Square Enix didn't want to justify polishing the game up like 30% more over another year or two rather than releasing the game for all the money in the world now. And the microtransactions are obviously atrocious, this coming from someone who has spent thousands on League.

      Here is the thing, for me the biggest tell that this was gonna flop was when I was more blown away by Spider-Man PS4 than the Avengers teaser...like can someone tell me how tf a Spider-Man game had a better teaser, demo, animation, choreography, lighting, gameplay than the most aniticipated conceptual game of all time... This was clearly a money grab rush job in an attempt to compensate over avengers Endgame hype🤦🏾‍♂️. Also there were so many "secrets" like how you tell a game is going to be good is how transparent the studio is about it. My point is with Square Enix we were getting a lot of buzzword talk no specific details on how it was gonna be(honestly a lot of what they said it would be isn't that way), but with CD Projekt for example they've been transparent as they can be about Cyberpunk 2077(which I believe may not live up to its hype but will possibly be a game of the year contender if not win game of the year).

    Another thing to add about the single player respawns is they don't refresh whenever you reach a checkpoint. So you could die twice early on in a mission, and then make it to the final part only to die once and have to restart the entire section over again. If you're doing single player and you've already been downed, I recommend reloading your checkpoint whenever you reach another section of the mission so that way your respawns refresh.

    Anyone who says that overpriced cosmetics are okay in games because it isn't important, is missing the bigger picture.
    That bigger picture is the fact that games which put cosmetics behind a pay wall nowadays almost always end up not having any actual cosmetics in the base game. Plus the cosmetics can break enjoyment of the game itself when you get ludicrously immersion-breaking skins in multiplayer games and the like.
    Few games seem to do a good job with cosmetics. Guild Wars 2 I think did a great job of it back when I used to play it, having a huge amount of paid cosmetics but also having a ludicrous variety in cosmetics you could get for free and with a reasonable amount of time played. You could customize your armor and swap the stats on it with relative ease. Sure, the game costs real money to buy in the first place, but considering the lack of a subscription fee their cosmetics and similar things you can pay for I think were a perfect MMO implementation.
    Nowadays though, "Live Service" games take the worst parts of older MMOs and put them into packages which cannot justify that kind of investment, with spruced-up graphics and decent gameplay hiding massive flaws in the core game design. I hope that the video games industry stops getting rewarded for these kinds of blatant cash grabs, but until people start voting with their wallets we're unlikely to see much change. I'm glad at least that plenty of games exist outside of this trend that cater to people like me.

It'll still be a grindy nightmare, but a lot of the technical issues will probably be ironed out and the game will end up a huge success at the end of it all. No matter how badly this game launched, you know a ton of people were going to be drawn to it. And people stuck with Fallout 76, so I'm sure it'd be even more true with this game. Equipment being useless, might be fixed. But the game clearly didn't have any direction from the start. The types of missions probably won't change.
      Anyway, my point is that each of those games had a solid foundation in at least some areas. Avengers doesn't have anything that truly connects you with the character. No visual customization, no true build customization, etc. Destiny had the best combat mechanics, pretty good graphics, great open areas, and the makings of a good story. Anthem physical customization, had decent combat, amazing flight mechanics like no other game ever, and pretty cool skills. Environments were pretty nice as well, though very limited.

It was a map and a gun and some terrain morphing. Conversely there was an exploration RPG made by one person. ONE. It was rough, but was an open world Bethesda type game with npcs and quests and a rich lore. Split into two areas. The Campaign areas that were tailored and the unmapped regions which is the procedural endgame stuff. It was bugged to hell and had issues, but you can see the jewel in the mud. These companies make millions and millions yet they still demand more money from consumers. Without trying to contradict myself, If these companies were to sell skins for let’s say, 69p or 99p, then that may well be viable. Seeing the cutscenes of Kamala interacting with the other heroes it kinda makes me wish it was just her game. Spliced in New York you learn with Kamala how to be a hero, certain side quests or even main missions have you tagging with the other heroes of New York. Maybe like Spiderman have it be open world, Ms. Marvel can shape her body however imagine turning huge and making hulk like leaps or arm stretch from roof to roof. I feel this was too soon, I feel the games should pace themselves like they did with their movies. Like the first iron man movie it was it's own thing because they were trying to figure out what they were establishing, later morw fleshed out is when it got more ambitious. So to do I feel with this game it should be like that, establish what they wanna go for create a solid base and from there have all the branching patterns you want to build up to a co op game such as ultimate alliance.
