@@cstrutherskgs Steel plates cause spalling which sends metal fragments radiating out along the plate face. Spalling can cause significant injuries to your neck and limbs. There's a reason that the US military only uses ceramic plates for body armor. The bullet craters the ceramic and it catches the fragments substantially reducing the chance of injury. I personally wouldn't run steel plates. They're better than nothing but far inferior to ceramic in preventing injury, even though ceramic plates need to be replaced after catching a bullet.

Theres alot of these vest that are sold with the intent to put your own plates in them. When it says"holds 3a" it means you can put 3a in them, not that they come with them. Probably confusing to alot of new gun owners. but for us gun vets , we've been aware of them forever. You can also use them for airsoft.

Honestly ain't much goes into steel plates, It's a thick piece of steel, You can have different levels of hardness and there are different types of steel, as well as different coatings and such but at the end of the day it's a steel plate, If it's thick enough it'll stop a bullet, If you play around with different types of steel and different hardness levels you can maybe get better performance out of thinner plates but it's still just going to be steel.

Some steel alloys are just as different from each other as aluminum is from titanium. Mild steel does not crack the way the second plate did after he hit it with the 50BMG. If I had to guess, the plate isn't even steel at all, and actually cast iron.

You are not wrong that SOME steel can be hardened and tempered and cracked. But Matt in the video (and me in my comments) said MILD steel, which is physically impossible to be hardened. Mild steel by definition is below a critical carbon level which allows for hardening (and tempering). The plate in the video cracked, therefore it is not mild steel is the only argument I'm making. I actually don't even think its steel and think it is cast iron.
The 50BMG will not pierce through your body, but at least 50% of its kinetic energy deposited on the plate has to go somewhere, and wherever it goes, it destroys. Your blood vessels, bones and internals aren't going to be happy about it.

@@cstrutherskgs Steel plates cause spalling which sends metal fragments radiating out along the plate face. Spalling can cause significant injuries to your neck and limbs. There's a reason that the US military only uses ceramic plates for body armor. The bullet craters the ceramic and it catches the fragments substantially reducing the chance of injury. I personally wouldn't run steel plates. They're better than nothing but far inferior to ceramic in preventing injury, even though ceramic plates need to be replaced after catching a bullet.

Theres alot of these vest that are sold with the intent to put your own plates in them. When it says"holds 3a" it means you can put 3a in them, not that they come with them. Probably confusing to alot of new gun owners. but for us gun vets , we've been aware of them forever. You can also use them for airsoft.

Those plates were weirdly impressive. To be fair, though, he was hitting them at quite an angle.
Honestly ain't much goes into steel plates, It's a thick piece of steel, You can have different levels of hardness and there are different types of steel, as well as different coatings and such but at the end of the day it's a steel plate, If it's thick enough it'll stop a bullet, If you play around with different types of steel and different hardness levels you can maybe get better performance out of thinner plates but it's still just going to be steel.

@@towtruckaj I completely disagree with you there. Steel is a blanket term we give to many different alloys containing iron. Some steel alloys are just as different from each other as aluminum is from titanium. Mild steel does not crack the way the second plate did after he hit it with the 50BMG. If I had to guess, the plate isn't even steel at all, and actually cast iron.
@@Puppybreth242 Steel could crack like that if it is hardened and not tempered or not tempered enough, If it is very hard it will be brittle to the point where you could probably break it by dropping it, Impacts will shatter steel if it is hardened enough.
@@towtruckaj I'm actually an amateur blacksmith and have broken my fair share of pieces that I didn't temper enough after hardening. You are not wrong that SOME steel can be hardened and tempered and cracked. But Matt in the video (and me in my comments) said MILD steel, which is physically impossible to be hardened. Mild steel by definition is below a critical carbon level which allows for hardening (and tempering). The plate in the video cracked, therefore it is not mild steel is the only argument I'm making. I actually don't even think its steel and think it is cast iron.

The 50BMG will not pierce through your body, but at least 50% of its kinetic energy deposited on the plate has to go somewhere, and wherever it goes, it destroys. Your blood vessels, bones and internals aren't going to be happy about it.
