"Touch me and ill sue".. that bit was taken from Jackie Chan's "Police Story" (1985)... Stallone was a fan.. they even reused another Police Story bit for Tango and Cash

I understand why it's not for everyone, but I like it. With the aftermath of 4, and losing all the money and all, he still had what mattered most, and a place that was ready to be home even if the rest of the world wouldn't. And that still kept the heart of who he is strong. It was always clear that if he was with Adrian, if he had his son, he really never lost that spark. And really, I always liked that Adrian could point out the right way to him when he was really lost. This movie, in my eyes, always held the message "if you take away all the fancy trimmings of a hero, what kind of person is still there?"

My favorite thing about 5 was that it made 4 matter more. Rocky 4 is basically Rocky 3 but Russia, and 5 validates Drago as a legitimate threat by showing the "permanent" effects of that fight. It's a touch of reality that 4 needed, delivered in 5.

Tommy Morrison was an up and coming boxer, who Stallone saw fight and offered him an audition for the part. He won one of the title belts a couple years after this film came out, but lost it a couple fights later. In 1996 he was diagnosed with HIV, and retired. Later on because the treatment went so well he tested negative for HIV and had a bit of a comeback attempt. Unfortunately the negative tests let him convince himself the original diagnosis was false a stopped taking the meds, he died of AIDS complications in 2013 at 44. Tragic end, unfortunately.

@@thomascarter2922 it wasn't different in the sense that *Rocky was more realistic before they turned the character into a superhero.* What happens more often in real life? A professional athlete fighting his way up from the bottom, retiring hurt, and then losing it all because he doesn't know what he's doing? Or a professional athlete that ends the Cold War with his fists and a speech? Like the person says above, *normies hate seeing their hero be brought Low by losing all of his money, because living vicariously through Rocky is wish fulfillment* for the average American. And being more realistic, Rocky 5 breaks that fantasy. That's its crime, period. Nothing else. Do you get it now?

I like to go ahead and take a quote from another movie which I think applies to Rocky V.
In a cameo by Cher in "Mamma Mia 2", the actors ask her how's their singing. Cher smiles and says "Not bad".
That's sort of the vibe from a real boxer making it into a Rocky picture. Tommy's scenes with his girlfriend and his Don King like promoter are the best in a ramshackle at most movie.
Bunny's excellent editing brings out the details most sympathetic to the roles, especially Rocky's son, played by Stallone's real son.

"That's not how the match went!"
You watched "Rocky vs. Drago" rather than "Rocky IV." Stallone re-edited the fight in "Rocky vs. Drago" so Rocky looked more competitive in the fight. What you're seeing here is closer to how "Rocky IV" actually went.
    "He walks like he's drunk."
He is! He just came out of Andy's bar. Though, they did cut a sequence out there that made it crystal clear Rocky was soused to the gills.
    "So Rocky gets a cut?"
Another scene that was cut out where Rocky says he's not taking any cut of Tommy's money because "He'll take care a' me... we'll take care a' each other, right?"
Most people's whining about this film boils down to "they made Rocky poor again" and "he doesn't fight in the ring," neither of which are legitimate reasons that make a movie bad.

The host says he didnt think the movie was that bad, and Stallone says "No no, that was a goose egg," and adds how that was why he wanted to do "Rocky Balboa", so that the series didnt end on such a bad movie. I do think its better than he gives it credit for.

32:33 In retrospect, it's not a bad movie but the tone is different from the previous ones. I saw the Rocky movies as a kid in the late 80s and episode 5 was maybe the first one I saw around the time everyone else did. As a child of the 80s, like my contemporaries, I preferred the 3rd and 4th parts rather than the more realistic first part, which was awarded and which is the most respected Rocky film. After the 3rd and 4th parts, which were 80s in every element (colorful, exaggerated, larger than life), many of us found the 5th part a bit strange, I didn't really like it but in retrospect, I think there is not a single "weak" Rocky movie in terms of the story. So, if I'm going by the effect it had on me as a kid, the "peak" for me was Rocky 3 and 4, no matter how cheesy they were. Retrospectively, the first part from 1976 is obviously the most important.

The opening flashback to the drago fight focused on Rocky getting badly beaten to explain his brain damage in the shower.
I couldn't help but notice that you showed almost none of the final fight. Just you describing it. Considering you did show the fights in the previous movies could this be a TH-cam thing? Power of Attorney (POA) is given to someone you trust and gives permission for whatever that document specifies. So, Rocky gave Paulie POA, and in turn made deals recommended by Rocky's accountant. But the accountant was a bad man and stole money and the investments lost all value so much so that the house and things had to be sold to cover the losses in the trades. Bankruptcy was inevitable. Everything except what the accountant did was perfectly legal and documents accepted by a court of law.

Rocky 4 was an action flick, Rocky 5 was mostly character drama. Because men are more likely to watch a Boxing movie, and typically enjoy action flicks, while many women assume they won’t enjoy them, I think that is a factor in why 5 has the lesser reputation: a likely more masculine audience.
They are both fine films, but 4 is more fun and more rewatchable.

I think one big reason why we didn't care for this one very much is that Rocky has always been a "rags to riches" story and a story of hope and overcoming the odds. To take away so much from Rocky in this film, his money, his health, his mental sharpness seemed ... cruel. Even Stallone grew to feel that way. That's why we got "Rocky Balboa" after this one, which was great. He felt he owed it to the fans. He wrote this film at a very unhappy time in his life, and it got reflected in the script. Also, we felt that trying to return Rocky to the same jive-talking guy he was in the first movie was simply an attempt to evoke fondness of the past as a mechanism to get us to feel that we "got our old Rocky back", and that felt like manipulation. Plus, the script is a little ... juvenile in its approach as well. Anyway, that's how me and my friends felt at the time, so long ago.

I'm 49 , my mom took me to Rocky 3 in theaters in 1982 when I was 7 , went home rented parts 1 and 2 , 1985 rolls around I am 10 by this time and I went to see Rocky 4 in theaters which was the best movie theatre experience of my life, it was crazy, people screaming, yelling, booing , crying, unbelievable. Then comes Rocky 5 , ill leave it at that. But trust me , Rocky Balboa ends the franchise as it shoukd have.

This was the first Rocky movie I saw properly and I immediately fell in love with the characters. I've never understood why people act like it's such a terrible movie.

Great reaction to this movie!!! When this movie came out, saw it the theater and really did not care too much about, just thought it was a big disappointment. Pretty much avoided this movie for whatever reasons. Then, flash forward a few decades, and this movie is being shown on local YV stations during "Rocky Marathons". Decided to sit through this movie and try to remember WHY I do not care for it. After watching this movie a few times now, it really is not that bad of a movie!!! Can understand why it is hated and a few characters really did not care for (probably the real reason why did not like this movie) but can also understand why it is liked. Guess this is one of those movies that actually grows on you after each viewing. Glad YOU ENJOYED this movie!!

Tommy Morrison who played Tommy Gunn was a very talented real heavyweight boxer in the 90s and early 2000s and could’ve been heavyweight champ, but he basically partied his career away with an endless stream of women, drugs, and alcohol and ended up dying of AIDS and giving bizarre interviews near the end of his life talking about government conspiracies and other crazy stuff. Really sad.

For me, I hated the fact that Rocky was knocked back to where he started to the point where it seemed that it made the sequels look like a fever dream...because they basically went back to how they were from the first film personality wise as well. 🤣
Not as bad as some people make it out to be...but the worst one. 😆

I liked this one A WHOLE LOT better than Rocky 4. But I DID like them all. You'll like the next one as well. LOTS of character stuff in it. The kid who played Rocky's son in this movie was Sylvester Stallone's actually son, who, sadly to say, passed away a few years after this. The actor who played Paulie died recently as well. Knowing all that NOW makes these movies a little more emotional.

Great job Bun! This is a great movie. My gut feeling is people criticize it for 2 reasons. One, they are emotionally invested in Rocky, and he has some HARD luck during it's course. Two, it's the first movie to include hip-hop in the soundtrack (which is a silly reason in my opinion.) Otherwise, all of the performances are great, and the writing is solid!

The power of attorney thing never made any sense. Adrian initially stayed behind and didn’t come to the USSR until later so there was no reason for Paulie to sign anything. She would have handled the family’s finances in Rocky’s absence.

I didn’t see the same cut of rocky IV as you, but I think it’s even more true to say that it was 3 music videos and a fight montage vs this one which was way more character focused which is why I prefer V to IV…

I guess my personal rating would be
    1. Rocky
    2. Rocky Balboa
    3. Rocky II
    4. Rocky III & IV
Rocky was brilliant and far less a boxing movie than about a guy trying to find his way in a hard life. Rocky Balboa you'll see. Rocky II was a more typically American story with a sickly sweet ending. Rocky 3 and 4 were totally formulaic.

Rocky V was the weakest link of the series and was meant to be the finale. It's not a terrible film, but it's not how fans wanted Rocky to end. "Rocky Balboa" (Rocky VI) was the perfect ending to the series. Rocky, then appears briefly in the Creed movies.

I admit that I was not a fan at first of this installment of the Rocky series. I guess because it didn’t follow the pattern of the previous movies. I also didn’t want to see Rocky deteriorate after the battle to get to the top. Then I saw the bigger picture. How athletes put themselves out there and the chances of serious injury or permanent damage. Adrian said it best when she said who cares about the money. I grew to like the continuing story of this character and the actor who portrays him.

This is a good movie, no doubt about it, it's just that it's probably the least-good Rocky movie. That's why people say they don't like it. Not because it's bad, but because it's just not as good as the other movies in the franchise. One thing is for sure, this movie is a hell of a lot better than probably half the Star Wars movies.

Rocky Jr in this movie was Sage Stallone Sylvester Stallones son in real life he passed away in 2012 and the baby in Rocky 2 is Sylvester Stallones younger son we never really see anything on him he has autism and stays out of the spotlight Sylvester does have a reality show on paramount + with his current wife and their 3 daughters called The Family Stallone.

I really liked it and think people are too negative about it, but I always thought he should have had a boxing match with Tommy Gunn. Otherwise I thought it was just as good as the others.
