Pauly was a jerk and a drunk, BUT he was the only person who was on Rocky's side (before Adriane), and he was the only guy who wanted to help Rocky train.
He was also the only cast member with real world experience in the ring. He took to boxing when he was enlisted in the Marine Corps and had a solid fight record before switching to acting.
I agree, and I wish they explained Adrian and Paulie more. There was a picture of Paulie in a USMC uniform ( Actor Burt Young really served) in the corps in their house. Did Paulie serve in Vietnam and have some PSTD? Did Adrian and Paulie lose their parents at a young age? Paulie Probably gave up a lot to keep what was left as his family together before he got the call. And something that nobody does for guys that could shape your character is tell Paulie he did a Great job raising Adrian and having to put your life on hold a few times and to make it through an unpopular war IF that was the case? Paulie does seem like a guy that would give you his shirt off his back but has many issues. He is one of those guys that helps you out( that you did not care for prior) but they grow on you for some reason you almost want to help them through their problems. Rocky was a man that took an interest in everyone and wanted to be a fixer. In my opinion
Maybe I need to re-watch the movies, but Paulie always struck me as a PoS. His 'protecting' Adrienne was basically keeping her as his housekeeper. His interest in helping Rocky also seemed to be greatly motivated by making money for himself. He struck me as a pretty toxic person who Rocky and Adrienne really should have cut off.
I'm always astonished how brilliant the music is written. The title theme just works as great in the sad piano version as it does as a inspiring, high energy full blown version.
The ending has a big impact because it's the first time we hear Rocky and Adrian profess their love for each other, at no point before in the movie do we hear the words "I love you". This is my favorite movie ever, always brings a tear to my eyes.

I thought the Rocky movies were entertaining as a kid, but as an old, the first one has become somewhere in my top 10 of all time. The ending always makes me emotional.
I met Burt Young who played Paulie in a hospital where I worked in 2018. He had health issues and came there once in awhile . Nobody made any fuss about him as a movie star. In fact as he sat in the lobby in a wheel chair before leaving, no one approached him. However I did and all I could say was, “you played a great character.” Then I grabbed a piece of paper and got his signature. He scribbled it with my name. I still have it today. It made me reflect on how you can even be a prominent character in one of the greatest movies ever and no one really cares that much years later. He was as average as…. me.
I really like the fact that Gazzo isn't a stereotypical gangster as it gives him more depth. Even though we may question his morality, given the nature of his business, his kindness towards Rocky shows that he's a complex person and not just a thug. The difficulty of simply surviving in rough and degraded neighbourhoods can put people in compromising situations and push them to do questionable things. It's often more about the circumstances than the character of the person.
This was the best reaction to this movie I've seen. I love the way you edited the clips to focus more on the relationships than the training and fight. It was a beautiful artistic choice that made me see things I had missed before, despite seeing this movie a ton of times. There's a reason this film won an Oscar. It's timeless.
Enjoyed your post movie analysis. Paulie is someone you hate and then you begin to feel so much empathy for. Rocky and Adriene are salt of the earth kind of characters you simply want to hope for the best and love. It reminds me of humanity and the core sentiments we all can relate to. Good watch
Great video! Count me among the votes for reacting to the rest of the Rocky movies. I think you'd also enjoy "First Blood," which Stallone also co-wrote. While Rambo character has become synonymous with blow-'em-up action, there is a very large human element, especially in the first film.
I've heard people try to say Rocky is being 'problematic' when he has Adrian in his apartment that first time. I'm glad you see that she not only liked him, but she kind of needed him to help her come out of her shell. It's obvious to me she liked him from the start, and just had a crippling shyness and poor self-image. Seeing her change just in this movie, and then through the rest of the franchise, makes it obvious how much both of them need each other. Rocky is an incredible script, with a lot of heart and humanity in it. To feel such an emotional high, and not even care that he technically lost the fight by decision, shows it's much more a personal story than a sports story.

Rocky’s manager and trainer played by Burgess Meredith was famous for playing the villain Penguin in the classic Batman TV series with Adam West as Batman/Bruce Wayne. Apollo creed played by Carl Weathers became a wonderful addition to the Star Wars universe as High Magistrate Greef Karga. Real life boxer ‘Smokin’ Joe Frazier who entered the ring before the fight, I watched him on TV in 1971 fight the legendary Muhammad Ali. During the Oscar awards where ‘Rocky’ was up for Best Picture, Ali took a playful jab at Sly Stallone on stage for ‘stealing’ his life’s story to make Rocky. Apollo Creed won the boxing match. Rocky won the girl! ROCKY!!!

I was 8 years old watching black and white TV in the Philippines where Burgess Meredith was almost a staple with films from the 40s and 50s and guest appearances in many series I grew up with like ‘The Wild Wild West’, ‘Bonanza’, ‘The Invaders’, ‘Mannix’, and 4 iconic episodes of ‘The Twilight Zone’. Rocky was the first time I saw him in color in the theater! He was in the 1981 ‘Clash of the Titans’, one of the first films I saw after moving to Canada. He and Carl Weathers were also in the 1988 series ‘In The Heat of the Night’. I don’t remember if they appeared in the same episodes. He is missed as he was a big part of my growing up.
The scene where Rocky rages at Mick for wanting to be his manager is really pivotal. Rocky gets his anger out, but he also recognizes that Mick has knowledge and can help him, but, even more than that, Rocky is a gentle soul who heard Mick's desperation, especially when Mick pathetically mumbles that he's 76 years old; Mick never got a shot like Rocky has, and he just wants to make a mark before he dies. Rocky runs after Micky because Rocky isn't coldblooded enough to have an old man wander away in despair. Their relationship is my second favorite of the franchise, after Rocky and Adrienne.
Professional athletes back in the day had to have day jobs. Even the great NFL Quarterback Johnny Unitas had a day job. They didn't make anything like the money modern day athletes make today. Growing up near Philly, this movie and boxing were a large part of my youth. My father was the sports fan, and I was dragged to all the different events. Stallone did an incredible job on the script and as Rocky.
Guys, I think you are wrong about Rocky being an amateur. He was a club fighter, the lowest level of a professional boxer. Here is a definition: A club fighter (or clubfighter) is a professional boxer who usually fights locally and has a mediocre record. Club fighters generally are not nationally recognized and have not won any fights that show the ability to win a championship. The term is often used as a pejorative for over-hyped fighters or for older boxers when they begin to decline. For example, Floyd Mayweather Jr. called Arturo Gatti "a blown-up club fighter", even though Gatti was the WBC super lightweight champion at the time.

The reason why Mickey was throwing so much shade at Rocky is because he “knew” and felt that Rocky could be a world class fighter. But instead, Rocky is hanging out with bad influence as opposed to training full time at the gym and having better fights that paid well. you can tell the way Rocky walks into the gym like, whatever and not motivated. Almost like he took it for granted. So Mick was annoyed af wi try him in the beginning of the movie.
Wish we got some of these emotion during the the movie reaction you showed in your commentary & editing. It left you wanting more so the movie accomplished its goal
I highly recommend watching Rocky 2 soon, while the emotional connection is still fresh. The two movies really are a package deal imo. I've always looked at Paulie as a sort of juxtaposition against Rocky. Both of them being depressed, down on their luck "never-was" guys and the different directions a person could take in that position. One fighting tooth and nail to make something better, the other resigned to his own inadequacies and resentful of the world. Doesn't make Paulie a bad guy, just much more complex then he often gets credit for.
Yes! You really need to watch all the Rocky movies. Great character arcs to be seen. A really good analysis Bunny, that really puts that extra weight into the reaction. The scene I think speaks to me the most is the one in Rockys apartment and his outburst towards Mickey. And how he after getting all the stuff out of the system went to Mickey and made sure all was ok. And I suppose that as you said since he is quite a lonely man, he holds on to the few people he has around him. Even though they have some huge issues and even doesn't treat him all that well.

I always had a soft spot for Pauly. I figured the mom was probably as mean to him as she was to Adrian. Plus he said he had to raise her so he's probably very resentful and blames her for the life he wanted but didn't get to have.
I love and hate Paulie. I wouldnt want to get close to him in real life. But in the movies, I actually cried when he told Rocky "I love you" in Rocky Balboa
"Breaking Away"??!!! I had no idea anybody your age has watched that film. It is a classic for sure. As a citizen of Indiana, it holds a special place in my heart. Such a great story...of course Rocky is a great movie too.
So glad you enjoyed this. A note on the dog's name... While it may sound like Rocky is calling him "Butt Kiss", most Americans back then (especially us guys) immediately understood it as "Butkus". Because Dick Butkus, of the Chicago Bears, was a household name, and he was synonymous with being rough and tough and not real pretty (like Butkus the dog).

Mr Gazo was like the gangsters, when I was a kid in the 1960's & '70's. They might be doing something illegal, but they were decent guys who looked out for the people in their neighborhoods. Mr Gazo gave Rocky $50 for his date, because Gazo thought a date would be good for Rocky, & Gazo also gave him $500 for training, because Gazo saw, that any measure of success would not only be good for Rocky, but for the neighborhood & maybe Philadelphia in general. Gazo didn't expect anything directly to him in return.
Good reaction to this Oscar winning movie that launched Stall one's career. "he's even fighting when he's talking" Stallone really had to work to convince Talks Shire to play the character Adrian, especially since her appearance in the Godfather.

This movie won the Academy Award for Best Picture because it epitomizes the rags to riches American dream. Stallone, who was a struggling actor at the time, turned Rocky into his own American dream.
I gotta tell ya, Bunny, that the review you gave at the very end was the most insightful analysis of this movie that I have ever heard from any reactor. As a matter of fact, it was so insightful that I wish I had a way of contacting Sylvester Stallone, to tell him that he really needs to check out your review, because I believe even Mr Stallone would be very surprised by your details of the character dynamics and the subtle nuances, which I suspect even he himself might not have ever considered. Those steps at the Art Museum... every time I've been up them I feel a little bit of that thrill. The landscape of the city has changed so much, so many buildings and trees added since then. But the thrill is the same.
What's so good about Pauly's character that I've only understood over many watchings is that he gives Rocky someone upon which to show his compassion and tolerance, without that person being Adrian, which might come across as pity. And Pauly also gives Adrian someone to stand up to and show her strength and toughness, without that person being Rocky, which might come across as combative. Pauly is perfectly placed so that Rocky can be tolerant and Adrian can be tough without them being that way to each other.
36:10 "I want more. It ended too fast". Well you're in luck. "Rocky II" starts EXACTLY where this one ends off. A common tradition among the Rocky films
One moment at the end that gets overlooked is after the fight Paulie is trying to get into the ring but security is stopping him. He wants to be in there where all the action is happening and it would make him feel important. Adrian comes up to the ring and says his name and Paulie distracts the security guard and lifts the rope so that she can get into the ring. That one simple act might be the only selfless thing he has ever done for his sister but it is a redeeming moment.
Paulie is also worried about Adrian being alone the rest of her life. He gets Rocky and Adrian together, even if it's in the worst possible way by tossing the turkey out of the door and forcing Adrian out of the house on Thanksgiving. Paulie is rough, but he cares enough to want to see his sister find someone and enjoy life.
Extremely thoughtful breakdown at the end there. Good stuff. The point about Paulie potentially being jealous was interesting. It made me think about how he is projecting a lot of the time. Like early in the film when he's doing his hair in the broken mirror. He tells Rocky Adrian is pushing 30 and that he could find someone better. Perhaps Paulie is really projecting about himself there. We know he wants to get married because he blames Adrian for that not happening. The scene where Paulie gets his baseball bat out and starts smashing things leading to Adrian flipping herself really hit me hard. Harder than how it seems to affect most of the reactors I've watched. Paulie is a broken but selfish man in pain, completely unaware of how much Adrian actually does for him but also feels just as stuck in the bottom of a hole in life as both Rocky and Adrian. And Adrian who has this shyness affliction finally stands up for herself. It's just such a gritty and true to life family dynamic where people hate each other but also love and depend on each other. Maybe it's something that you don't notice as much on the first viewing because you are two shocked at how much of an a--hole Paulie is. It's a brilliant scene. This scene, the scene with Rocky and Micky at Rocky's apartment, and the ending scene with Rocky just wanting to be with Adrian are the best moments in the movie for me. I think it's also my favourite movie to watch people reacting too. Nearly everyone is surprised by it.

Great reaction. Although this one was before my time, I LOVE it. The thing to remember about this movie is that it was made on a very low budget and shot in only 28 days of filming. Sylvester Stallone was an unknown and was actually homeless, but he wrote the script, and somehow not only convinced a studio to finance it, but he also convinced them to let him play a role in the movie (not just any role...the TITLE role). There are more layers to the story, but I'm keeping the comment as brief as possible. Anyway, the end result garnered multiple Oscar nominations and ended up winning the Oscar for Best Picture. Btw, this was also the movie that created the 'Workout montage' with the music in movies. Before this movie, filmmakers didn't see it necessary to show the athletes working out in different inter-cutting scenes, since they thought it would bore the audience...lol. But Stallone changed all of that making sure that there was an inspirational workout montage with short intercutting scenes in the movie, the very first of its kind. Now pretty much every movie in this genre uses a similar workout-with-music-montage.
I'm not usually into Rocky, but I saw that Bunny was watching, so boom, I sat myself down. There are things I like about it. The metaphor of "going the distance" is beautiful. You don't always have to be the best, the greatest -- if you can stand your ground, go the distance, that counts for something. For me the real champion here is the music, it's incredible. I don't care about the sequels -- except Rocky IV, but just because it is shamelessly silly. Thank you, Bun.

Gazzo being a loan shark means most people are suspicious of him, but he actually is a genuine likeable guy who will also order your thumbs to be broken.
Fan Fact: I once used Rocky's technique of breaking a lock off that he used to get into his locker. I rented a U-Haul and the sliding door sheared off the dial of a Master lock I had on it. I was on my way to run sound for a retreat and needed to be able get the door open to get to my equipment. I remembered THAT scene with Rocky and his locker, grabbed a hammer, and with one whack ... broke the lock clean off!! Oooooh the life lessons I've learned from Rocky!
Rocky 2 starts right where Rocky stopped. Stallone went through so much in getting the movie made. When you get a chance you might want to watch the making of Rocky. You will get more of the inspiring story of Rocky and Adrian. Stallone was fairly unheard of. I forget how much was spent on making the first movie, but it was a huge box office hit. I was only 20 yrs old when I moved to the big city of St.Louis and Rocky was showing and everyone was talking about this movie. I'm a fan of the Rocky movies and now that you have seen the first one there are several more. I would like to watch them again with you. Seeing your reaction showed me why the girls liked the movie as much as the guys. Hope you watch Rocky 2 soon.

You are right. Rocky and Adrien both gave each other love, value and respect. Both felt unloved before they had each other and they built each other up. When Rocky was alone, he couldn't let others know he was hurting or vulnerable so he'd say it didn't hurt him. People who are alone don't have the luxury of being vulnerable. He had to consume his pain without showing it. Paulie also felt a lot of pain and alone ... and turned to alcohol to deal with his pain. Not everyone is strong enough to climb above the pain. There is more ... watch Rocky 2.
Fun Fact: The dog Butkus was Stallone's actual pet dog. He sold Butkus (who was named after the popular football player Dick Butkus who was a big bruiser like the dog) right before the filming of Rocky started because he needed money. When Rocky got funding and filming was about to start, he went back to the guy to get Butkus back, but the guy didn't want to sell. When he learned about the film going ahead, he asked thousands for the dog, OR for a speaking role in the film. SO, Stallone gave him a speaking role in the film. He's the very small guy who greets Rocky at the beginning of the film and asks about his fight with Spider Rico. Rocky then asks him if he's deaf, and he says, "I'm short!" Stallone wrote that line for him ON PURPOSE as a kind of penance for the hassle over getting Butkus back. As you've already seen, the little guy gets a few other scenes as well, so Sly must not have been too bent out of shape in the end.
Rocky is not only the greatest, most inspiring sports movie, its also one of the greatest love stories ever put on film. He may have lost the fight with Apollo. But when Adrian climbs into the ring and yells, "I LOVE YOU!" Rocky definitely came out the winner.

The problem with working for a loan shark as a "leg breaker" as Mick puts it, is that no coach wants their students to use the skills they learn to hurt people outside of the ring. I used to train in martial arts, and our coach did warn us that if he ever heard of any of us using what he taught us to attack someone, we'd be out of his dojo.

That said, I think Rocky letting him profit off of his name was his way of recognizing what Paulie must have been feeling. Rocky II is something that should be seen as soon after this as possible. We originally had to wait a few years, but time worked differently back then. lol

Supposedly, the poster in the arena being wrong was a prop gaff. So, it being wrong was written into the movie. Given everything else against Rocky, it goes largely unnoticed. : )

The ending has a big impact because it's the first time we hear Rocky and Adrian profess their love for each other, at no point before in the movie do we hear the words "I love you". This is my favorite movie ever, always brings a tear to my eyes.

I thought the Rocky movies were entertaining as a kid, but as an old, the first one has become somewhere in my top 10 of all time. The ending always makes me emotional.
I met Burt Young who played Paulie in a hospital where I worked in 2018. He had health issues and came there once in awhile .
Nobody made any fuss about him as a movie star. In fact as he sat in the lobby in a wheel chair before leaving, no one approached him. However I did and all I could say was, “you played a great character.” Then I grabbed a piece of paper and got his signature. He scribbled it with my name. I still have it today.
It made me reflect on how you can even be a prominent character in one of the greatest movies ever and no one really cares that much years later. He was as average as…. me.
Gazzo - boss of the year. Gives Rocky money for a date, money to help train, comes to the fight and sits ringside.....the real hero of the movie.
I really like the fact that Gazzo isn't a stereotypical gangster as it gives him more depth. Even though we may question his morality, given the nature of his business, his kindness towards Rocky shows that he's a complex person and not just a thug. The difficulty of simply surviving in rough and degraded neighbourhoods can put people in compromising situations and push them to do questionable things. It's often more about the circumstances than the character of the person.
This was the best reaction to this movie I've seen. I love the way you edited the clips to focus more on the relationships than the training and fight. It was a beautiful artistic choice that made me see things I had missed before, despite seeing this movie a ton of times. There's a reason this film won an Oscar. It's timeless.

I think you'd also enjoy "First Blood," which Stallone also co-wrote. While Rambo character has become synonymous with blow-'em-up action, there is a very large human element, especially in the first film.

I've heard people try to say Rocky is being 'problematic' when he has Adrian in his apartment that first time. I'm glad you see that she not only liked him, but she kind of needed him to help her come out of her shell. It's obvious to me she liked him from the start, and just had a crippling shyness and poor self-image. Seeing her change just in this movie, and then through the rest of the franchise, makes it obvious how much both of them need each other. Rocky is an incredible script, with a lot of heart and humanity in it. To feel such an emotional high, and not even care that he technically lost the fight by decision, shows it's much more a personal story than a sports story.

Apollo creed played by Carl Weathers became a wonderful addition to the Star Wars universe as High Magistrate Greef Karga. Real life boxer ‘Smokin’ Joe Frazier who entered the ring before the fight, I watched him on TV in 1971 fight the legendary Muhammad Ali. During the Oscar awards where ‘Rocky’ was up for Best Picture, Ali took a playful jab at Sly Stallone on stage for ‘stealing’ his life’s story to make Rocky.

I was 8 years old watching black and white TV in the Philippines where Burgess Meredith was almost a staple with films from the 40s and 50s and guest appearances in many series I grew up with like ‘The Wild Wild West’, ‘Bonanza’, ‘The Invaders’, ‘Mannix’, and 4 iconic episodes of ‘The Twilight Zone’. Rocky was the first time I saw him in color in the theater! He was in the 1981 ‘Clash of the Titans’, one of the first films I saw after moving to Canada. He and Carl Weathers were also in the 1988 series ‘In The Heat of the Night’. I don’t remember if they appeared in the same episodes. He is missed as he was a big part of my growing up.

Carl Weathers was in "the Predator" movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. So he worked with Sly's "action hero competitor."
The scene where Rocky rages at Mick for wanting to be his manager is really pivotal. Rocky gets his anger out, but he also recognizes that Mick has knowledge and can help him, but, even more than that, Rocky is a gentle soul who heard Mick's desperation, especially when Mick pathetically mumbles that he's 76 years old; Mick never got a shot like Rocky has, and he just wants to make a mark before he dies. Rocky runs after Micky because Rocky isn't coldblooded enough to have an old man wander away in despair. Their relationship is my second favorite of the franchise, after Rocky and Adrienne.
Professional athletes back in the day had to have day jobs. Even the great NFL Quarterback Johnny Unitas had a day job. They didn't make anything like the money modern day athletes make today.
Growing up near Philly, this movie and boxing were a large part of my youth. My father was the sports fan, and I was dragged to all the different events. Stallone did an incredible job on the script and as Rocky.
Rocky was an amateur boxer not a pro. That's why he made $44 on that first fight and $130k for the Appolo fight.
Guys, I think you are wrong about Rocky being an amateur. He was a club fighter, the lowest level of a professional boxer. Here is a definition: A club fighter (or clubfighter) is a professional boxer who usually fights locally and has a mediocre record. Club fighters generally are not nationally recognized and have not won any fights that show the ability to win a championship. The term is often used as a pejorative for over-hyped fighters or for older boxers when they begin to decline. For example, Floyd Mayweather Jr. called Arturo Gatti "a blown-up club fighter", even though Gatti was the WBC super lightweight champion at the time.
@@vorlon1 rocky had a good record and the Wikipedia refers to him as an amateur boxer. "By the end of 1975, Rocky had fought in 64 fights, winning 44 (38 KO'S) and losing 20. Rocky was proud that he never had his nose broken in any of his amateur fighting career." In all honesty I don't think it makes much difference. You don't make a living earning $40 every few weeks.

The reason why Mickey was throwing so much shade at Rocky is because he “knew” and felt that Rocky could be a world class fighter. But instead, Rocky is hanging out with bad influence as opposed to training full time at the gym and having better fights that paid well. you can tell the way Rocky walks into the gym like, whatever and not motivated. Almost like he took it for granted. So Mick was annoyed af wi try him in the beginning of the movie.

I love your analogy of how Rocky talks like he's fighting. I've never heard anyone say that before. It makes sense.
I highly recommend watching Rocky 2 soon, while the emotional connection is still fresh. The two movies really are a package deal imo. I've always looked at Paulie as a sort of juxtaposition against Rocky. Both of them being depressed, down on their luck "never-was" guys and the different directions a person could take in that position. One fighting tooth and nail to make something better, the other resigned to his own inadequacies and resentful of the world. Doesn't make Paulie a bad guy, just much more complex then he often gets credit for.

Yes! You really need to watch all the Rocky movies. Great character arcs to be seen. A really good analysis Bunny, that really puts that extra weight into the reaction. The scene I think speaks to me the most is the one in Rockys apartment and his outburst towards Mickey. And how he after getting all the stuff out of the system went to Mickey and made sure all was ok. And I suppose that as you said since he is quite a lonely man, he holds on to the few people he has around him. Even though they have some huge issues and even doesn't treat him all that well.

Funny in Rocky 2 there's a joke highlighting that Rocky isn't he brightest guy you'll meet.
I always had a soft spot for Pauly. I figured the mom was probably as mean to him as she was to Adrian. Plus he said he had to raise her so he's probably very resentful and blames her for the life he wanted but didn't get to have.
I love and hate Paulie. I wouldnt want to get close to him in real life. But in the movies, I actually cried when he told Rocky "I love you" in Rocky Balboa
He was also in the military, probably Vietnam. Maybe we need a Paulie prequel.

A note on the dog's name... While it may sound like Rocky is calling him "Butt Kiss", most Americans back then (especially us guys) immediately understood it as "Butkus". Because Dick Butkus, of the Chicago Bears, was a household name, and he was synonymous with being rough and tough and not real pretty (like Butkus the dog).

Mr Gazo was like the gangsters, when I was a kid in the 1960's & '70's. They might be doing something illegal, but they were decent guys who looked out for the people in their neighborhoods. Mr Gazo gave Rocky $50 for his date, because Gazo thought a date would be good for Rocky, & Gazo also gave him $500 for training, because Gazo saw, that any measure of success would not only be good for Rocky, but for the neighborhood & maybe Philadelphia in general. Gazo didn't expect anything directly to him in return.

I gotta tell ya, Bunny, that the review you gave at the very end was the most insightful analysis of this movie that I have ever heard from any reactor.
As a matter of fact, it was so insightful that I wish I had a way of contacting Sylvester Stallone, to tell him that he really needs to check out your review, because I believe even Mr Stallone would be very surprised by your details of the character dynamics and the subtle nuances, which I suspect even he himself might not have ever considered.

Those steps at the Art Museum... every time I've been up them I feel a little bit of that thrill. The landscape of the city has changed so much, so many buildings and trees added since then. But the thrill is the same.
What's so good about Pauly's character that I've only understood over many watchings is that he gives Rocky someone upon which to show his compassion and tolerance, without that person being Adrian, which might come across as pity. And Pauly also gives Adrian someone to stand up to and show her strength and toughness, without that person being Rocky, which might come across as combative. Pauly is perfectly placed so that Rocky can be tolerant and Adrian can be tough without them being that way to each other.
36:10 "I want more. It ended too fast". Well you're in luck. "Rocky II" starts EXACTLY where this one ends off. A common tradition among the Rocky films
One moment at the end that gets overlooked is after the fight Paulie is trying to get into the ring but security is stopping him. He wants to be in there where all the action is happening and it would make him feel important. Adrian comes up to the ring and says his name and Paulie distracts the security guard and lifts the rope so that she can get into the ring. That one simple act might be the only selfless thing he has ever done for his sister but it is a redeeming moment.
Paulie is also worried about Adrian being alone the rest of her life. He gets Rocky and Adrian together, even if it's in the worst possible way by tossing the turkey out of the door and forcing Adrian out of the house on Thanksgiving. Paulie is rough, but he cares enough to want to see his sister find someone and enjoy life.
Stallone wouldn't let his script go without him playing the lead role. That's an incredible story in itself.

The point about Paulie potentially being jealous was interesting. It made me think about how he is projecting a lot of the time. Like early in the film when he's doing his hair in the broken mirror. He tells Rocky Adrian is pushing 30 and that he could find someone better. Perhaps Paulie is really projecting about himself there. We know he wants to get married because he blames Adrian for that not happening.
The scene where Paulie gets his baseball bat out and starts smashing things leading to Adrian flipping herself really hit me hard. Harder than how it seems to affect most of the reactors I've watched. Paulie is a broken but selfish man in pain, completely unaware of how much Adrian actually does for him but also feels just as stuck in the bottom of a hole in life as both Rocky and Adrian. And Adrian who has this shyness affliction finally stands up for herself. It's just such a gritty and true to life family dynamic where people hate each other but also love and depend on each other. Maybe it's something that you don't notice as much on the first viewing because you are two shocked at how much of an a--hole Paulie is. It's a brilliant scene. This scene, the scene with Rocky and Micky at Rocky's apartment, and the ending scene with Rocky just wanting to be with Adrian are the best moments in the movie for me.
I think it's also my favourite movie to watch people reacting too. Nearly everyone is surprised by it.

Great reaction. Although this one was before my time, I LOVE it. The thing to remember about this movie is that it was made on a very low budget and shot in only 28 days of filming. Sylvester Stallone was an unknown and was actually homeless, but he wrote the script, and somehow not only convinced a studio to finance it, but he also convinced them to let him play a role in the movie (not just any role...the TITLE role). There are more layers to the story, but I'm keeping the comment as brief as possible. Anyway, the end result garnered multiple Oscar nominations and ended up winning the Oscar for Best Picture.
Btw, this was also the movie that created the 'Workout montage' with the music in movies. Before this movie, filmmakers didn't see it necessary to show the athletes working out in different inter-cutting scenes, since they thought it would bore the audience...lol. But Stallone changed all of that making sure that there was an inspirational workout montage with short intercutting scenes in the movie, the very first of its kind. Now pretty much every movie in this genre uses a similar workout-with-music-montage.
In the early 70s I lived in a fine art deco apartment and ate well for 200 bucks a month. The bicycle was a gift.
I'm not usually into Rocky, but I saw that Bunny was watching, so boom, I sat myself down. There are things I like about it. The metaphor of "going the distance" is beautiful. You don't always have to be the best, the greatest -- if you can stand your ground, go the distance, that counts for something. For me the real champion here is the music, it's incredible. I don't care about the sequels -- except Rocky IV, but just because it is shamelessly silly. Thank you, Bun.

Stallone himself says that Rocky is not a boxing movie, it's a love story that has boxing in it.
Gazzo being a loan shark means most people are suspicious of him, but he actually is a genuine likeable guy who will also order your thumbs to be broken.
Fan Fact: I once used Rocky's technique of breaking a lock off that he used to get into his locker. I rented a U-Haul and the sliding door sheared off the dial of a Master lock I had on it. I was on my way to run sound for a retreat and needed to be able get the door open to get to my equipment. I remembered THAT scene with Rocky and his locker, grabbed a hammer, and with one whack ... broke the lock clean off!! Oooooh the life lessons I've learned from Rocky!
Just an FYI, Stallone did an interview a couple of years ago and he still has the Turtles (Cuff & Link).

Rocky 2 starts right where Rocky stopped. Stallone went through so much in getting the movie made. When you get a chance you might want to watch the making of Rocky. You will get more of the inspiring story of Rocky and Adrian. Stallone was fairly unheard of. I forget how much was spent on making the first movie, but it was a huge box office hit. I was only 20 yrs old when I moved to the big city of St.Louis and Rocky was showing and everyone was talking about this movie. I'm a fan of the Rocky movies and now that you have seen the first one there are several more. I would like to watch them again with you. Seeing your reaction showed me why the girls liked the movie as much as the guys. Hope you watch Rocky 2 soon.

You are right. Rocky and Adrien both gave each other love, value and respect. Both felt unloved before they had each other and they built each other up.
When Rocky was alone, he couldn't let others know he was hurting or vulnerable so he'd say it didn't hurt him. People who are alone don't have the luxury of being vulnerable. He had to consume his pain without showing it.
Paulie also felt a lot of pain and alone ... and turned to alcohol to deal with his pain. Not everyone is strong enough to climb above the pain.
There is more ... watch Rocky 2.
Fun Fact: The dog Butkus was Stallone's actual pet dog. He sold Butkus (who was named after the popular football player Dick Butkus who was a big bruiser like the dog) right before the filming of Rocky started because he needed money. When Rocky got funding and filming was about to start, he went back to the guy to get Butkus back, but the guy didn't want to sell. When he learned about the film going ahead, he asked thousands for the dog, OR for a speaking role in the film. SO, Stallone gave him a speaking role in the film. He's the very small guy who greets Rocky at the beginning of the film and asks about his fight with Spider Rico. Rocky then asks him if he's deaf, and he says, "I'm short!" Stallone wrote that line for him ON PURPOSE as a kind of penance for the hassle over getting Butkus back. As you've already seen, the little guy gets a few other scenes as well, so Sly must not have been too bent out of shape in the end.
Rocky is not only the greatest, most inspiring sports movie, its also one of the greatest love stories ever put on film. He may have lost the fight with Apollo. But when Adrian climbs into the ring and yells, "I LOVE YOU!" Rocky definitely came out the winner.
*#Butkus* was *Sylvester's* real dog who he sold when he was broke & had to pay thousands of dollars to buy him back when he sold the script for *Rocky*

The problem with working for a loan shark as a "leg breaker" as Mick puts it, is that no coach wants their students to use the skills they learn to hurt people outside of the ring. I used to train in martial arts, and our coach did warn us that if he ever heard of any of us using what he taught us to attack someone, we'd be out of his dojo.

Great reaction! The connection you made between the three main characters and how Paulie probably felt left out and left behind was truly insightful. That said, I think Rocky letting him profit off of his name was his way of recognizing what Paulie must have been feeling. Rocky II is something that should be seen as soon after this as possible. We originally had to wait a few years, but time worked differently back then. lol
Someone else below said they have a soft spot for Paulie. I feel the same way. Sure, he is rough and obnoxious, but he is a good friend to Rocky.

Supposedly, the poster in the arena being wrong was a prop gaff. So, it being wrong was written into the movie. Given everything else against Rocky, it goes largely unnoticed. : )
