    I love finding bonus items inside other purchases! Even better, this happened to me last week: I trash picked a Garmin iQue PDA, in box with a lot of accessories (now listed for $35). It was the Monday after a citywide yard sale, so leftovers. Inside the box was a Best Buy gift card. I called to see if there was a balance, and my mind was blown to find out it still has $166 on it!!!
    My kind of trash pick!

    Shipping Tip! Don't ship something in a cylindrical tube if you can help it. I did that for the first time with UPS for an LED light bar, the cylinder was a 4" diameter so I input the measurements as 4"x4"x16" and shipped it out. A few days later I got an adjustment that more than DOUBLED the shipping cost because it was an "Irregular Shape". Kind of interesting.

    • @dereksneed3278
      @dereksneed3278 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Yes, FedEx, UPS and some service levels of USPS will have a surcharge for that “irregular” shape, since they say it’s hard to get an accurate barcode scan (rolling around on belt) so they have to handle it. All 3 of them offer a branded box they call a “tube”, which is actually a triangular shipping box.

    Thank you Justin for sharing your knowledge here. I had a situation with a buyer regarding a broken item, I decided to give their money back to them, 100% and I also refuse the return of the item. It was stressful enough already so, I took the loss and I didn’t take chances of getting a bad review, and having to deal with a return for an item that wasn’t complete anymore, or what I sent.

    Turning on free returns was one of the best things I did for my store. I also have RMA returns turned off. It's fantastic in many of my cases. If people have a *true* problem, it's a hands off approach that's fast and easy for the buyer. If it's a buyer's remorse return as a Top Rated Seller, I deduct the shipping costs (and extra if the item's condition is changed in any way) and eventually resell the item anyways.
    The reality is that not many people really return items as they are typically happy with their purchase. You then get the people who want to play chicken with you or bait you into giving full/partial refunds for whatever reason. In that case, you simply get to respond with "Hello sir or madam, please return the item. I have free returns on everything!"😂

    • @jfgibson73
      @jfgibson73 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So you can only deduct the shipping costs of a free return if you are Top Rated?

    • @RetroSho
      @RetroSho 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jfgibson73 Yep. It’s one of the perks of being a Top Rated seller. You can deduct the shipping fees AND up to 50% of the value of the item (if you so choose) if the item is damaged or altered in any way.
      What I do is just deduct shipping if it’s a buyers remorse purchase. If the item is damaged to an extent, I deduct an extra 25-50%. If the item was brand new and opened, I deduct the full 50%. If the item was stolen or completely destroyed, I contact eBay (very rare). In all other cases (item lost in transit, item non functional after receipt, ordered by mistake) I’ll give full refund (after getting the item back if applicable).
      You don’t get these perks if you don’t offer free (30 or 60 day) returns. You also don’t have protection from negative feedback either.

      I had 2 recently where the buyer tried to bait me into a partial refund. I said “please return the item”. Both had returns opened and neither were shipped back. The buyers still complained to eBay and eBay gave them both a full refund and deducted from my funds! So these scammers got the item and their money back! I had to contact eBay to fight to get refunded, showing them the returns were never shipped back. A huge hassle for me and eBay protecting scammers.

    One benefit of listing seasonal items off season is there is less competition, fewer items for sale. Also, summer items can sell in the winter as people take trips to warmer places. Same with winter items in summer. People can travel to colder climates in summer.

I was parting them out like you but the eBay AI picked all my part listings with Cuisinart food processors in the title or description and pulled them down then dinged me because there was a huge blade recall on all of the vintage units like the DLC-8. I had to keep calling and calling and making my case then waiting for the appeals to resolve in my favor. I don't offer returns on things like shoes. I post photos, size, manufacturer, etc but I think items like shoes and clothing that most people would tend to go try on to check fit if they were to go to a store has a higher chance of being returned then almost any other item. To me, if a person wants the luxury of shopping online for these kinds of items then they have to accept the gamble that what they are purchasing might not fit them properly. My time and effort shouldn't be free shipping an item, spending time dealing with return messages with a customer, getting item mailed back to me, issuing a refund, restocking and then relisting that item just because the buyer wanted the luxury of shopping at home. #NoReturns on shoes and clothing for me.

    I do not accept returns and never have as its standard in the industry ( antiques and collectibles).
    I regularly purchase no returns items, I just read the sellers feedback, ask questions and look at photos.
    A quality listing with ACCURATE descriptions, quality goods and exceptional customer service eliminates customer worry in the catagories I sell in.
    I’d rather blow off the loony Lou’s up front rather than on the back side where I pay their return shipping.
    Works for me.
    In 2000 listings sold I have had only 4 not as described returns and they all were false reports.
    I’m fine with those stats.
    What I do only works with great service and feedback and it gets the customer to ask if they have a question or two as well. Before they purchase.

      As an ebay seller, I also do NOT offer returns. For essentially the same reason, as a vintage and antique items, and overstock parts seller, a lot of our items are large and/or heavy. A free return might set us $20, $50 or even $100+ in the hole for an item. Not worth it unless you are specifically selling small and lightweight items that aren't going to impact your profit margins

      As to #2, our “disclaimer” had grown too long and cumbersome, like a weekend homework assignment. I liked it, but was always tweaking it and then updating older listings as offers went out. What changed? As much as I thought it good, informative business, in the day & age of dumbing down & even dumber, it was a waste of time and my mental space.
      As much as I LOATHE AI and especially eBay’s AI, I figured that they invested in it and want us to use it… and I’m hoping to find at least a modicum of favor w/ the algorithm “gods” there. It’s easier on my wife who does our listings. People don’t read the information providers them, if they do many can’t process it (or the language itself written in).. eBay lore has it that you’re lucky to have the avg buyer look past even the 3rd photo!! I've always done no returns accepted to cut down on the BS.The buyer can still return it due to ebay siding with not as described automatically but then you can send a physical letter to ebay legal by their guidelines. If the complaont is something that was described and no returns, you get your shipping costs and fees back. A perfect example is I sold a "broken for parts only" and described the problem and they returned it due to the exact problem described. I'm sure they thought they could fix it, then couldn't, then wanted to return it. So I shouldn't have to eat the $50 shipping and fees cost. And I didn't because I set no returns accepted and sent a physical letter to ebay legal.

    Why don't you offer free 60 day returns and free shipping with the BUYER paying for the return shipping?
    This way you do not need to eat that shipping cost and it discourages returns. You can always reach out to that seller and give them a credit if it is justified. But with you paying the return shipping on a item with tight margins that can easily land you in the red.
    CD's are a perfect example of this. I sell a generic CD for right around $7.67 with free shipping. Roughly $4.50 of that is shipping cost and fees. If I need to pay for return shipping I am now into the red and will tell them to just keep the item so I lost the item and my potential $3 profit. This times a few hundred CD's adds up. With them paying for that return shipping I get the item back and can relist it lessening my losses staying in the black.

    • @helpfulcommenter

      What on earth do you mean by "why don't you offer free 60 day returns... with the BUYER paying for the return shipping?" Then how is it a FREE return? Bueller.....? Bueller......?
      Also, I'm struggling to understand how you think offering free shipping on every item but charging for returns is better for your profit margin when your return rate is only 3%
      What?
      It's like you're living in a backwards world doing everything in reverse. Also - how is your profit $3 - do you not account for your cost of goods? Man. Imagine taking the time to do an ebay listing for a profit of $3.

    I do free returns. If it sold for under $35 and depending on the shipping cost, I usually give a full refund and let the buyer keep the item. Lost revenue from returns is just part of doing business. If you were running a brick-and-mortar store you would be dealing with a much higher "leakage" rate from theft, fraud, and returns.

    My question: I know it doesn’t make sense, but it almost seems like the more items I list, the slower my sales get. • @larrycoonrod5563

      How many items you have listed is not a factor in Ebay sales. It has more to do with the desirability of items and number of the same items listed and the quality of listings. Are you selling in a category where other sellers are promoting their items? Try sorting by lowest price first. That is the most common sort option buyers use. How close to the lowest price are you?

    The key to success is understanding cash flow. Stubbornly holding on to seasonal high prices and sitting on that until something sells will ultimately leave you like a lot of these resellers on youtube... garages and storage units full of stuff. Your best strategy is to price to sell to flippers. That way you also get 1000s of followers which is very useful for new listing alerts.
    Another good tactic is if you get something real cheap or for free then auction it. Buyers love auctions. Trust me, these will make you money faster than what this guy says about holding high prices forever. Do that and you will just accumulate stuff.
