Overhead view is great! Please consider doing that more often. So nice to watch you throwing and chatting again. As always, thanks for another awesome video👍
Hello! Congrats for your work!!! I have a dude. How do you make sure that when the clay dries and biscuits, the hole doesnt get smaller? Do you do any technique to avoid that? Thaks!!
HI Matthew love your videos and positive outlook on live! Would like to see the video of trimming and fitting the drain piece and the final results? Would you do a video on how you did the shrinkage calculations as well? And what type of clay did you use for the sink? Thanks Melany
One of the first things that drew me to you Matt is because of your "clean throwing", I too endeavor to throw clean, it just makes things so much clearer as I throw. I'm probably a little OCD with cleanliness anyway: LOL *ADDITION* None of us knew devastation that was about to arrive just shortly after you made this video Matt! Covid 19 has changed the world "as we know it" It's October 2020 as I write this "extra" comment. I think the art world has suffered `probably` more than any other, [and I mean ALL kinds of art not just ceramics]. However, through all this devastation, getting used to this new way of life; you have managed to continue making your videos and live streams, both of which inspires us all. Thank you for that. 09.10.2020
Just discovered by fortunate accident the stiff cay is an advantage for big bowl. Years ago I tried a sink as a special order, at that time special orders came with a curse - the drain hardware didn't fit with the shrinkage. It's a new day I'll have to try again. Thanks some great insight on throwing technique and thoughts on an accepting attitude to life. Carpe diem.
I’m glad the video helped. Yes I don’t use stiff clay if I can help it because soft clay is easier on the arms and hands. Stiff clay is almost a necessity for some items. Cheers!
Matthew, I have thrown many bowls, but not thrown a basin or sink. The fruit bowls I have made are not robust enough to take the knocks to make me confident to turn any into sinks. How thick do you throw the walls, and do you do anything specific to make you confident they will survive people dropping mugs or other items on them? With thanks, Simon
You're a star Matt: this is a great video and I'm glad you will be getting back into making more in 2020. You are a very wise man and I cling to your every word :) thanks.
Hi . Great video! Been wanting to throw a sink but I'm a bit stuck at being worried about weather it will last or not. I mean sinks get alot of bangs n bumps. Will it last for a few years or how long? How does it stand up to an industrial sink? I mean sure it's way better the looking and everything but I wonder how strong they are really. What clay is the best/ most chip proof. So many questions that I just hold myself back! 😅
Thank you for showing how to make a sink. Our bathroom is 1930s and this year it's getting an upgrade oh, I'm going to make my own sinks. Thanks again and I want to see it glazed!
I’ll definitely show the finished product. Make sure to get the measurements of what your specific drain requires for the hole size when you make your sink.
Hi Matthew, I am wanting a pottery vessel sink, I have a photo. I was wondering if it's possible for you to make 2 of the same and what the price would be
I make tiles. It’s all about compression. No bending then clay. Handle as little as possible 👍 Ps. I’ve thought about starting a channel about making tiles.
I get what you say about attitude with some situations/problems. SO I have an aneurysm that could rupture at any time [fact]. How do you suggest my attitude should be WITH THIS Matt?
Well I only know you through comments and emails so I don’t presume I know you well enough to tell you how to live your life when it comes to difficult health situations. There are definitely situations in life that happen that attitude has nothing to do with the outcome. But I still believe that anyone, even in dire medical condition can enjoy more of the life they have left by having a good attitude and looking for the positive than dwelling on the negative. All of us are facing the end of our life one earth some day. Some sooner than others and to deny that or not realize that is a tragedy. For me to live as if I’m far from death is to not appreciate what I have right now. And more importantly than that is to love those around me. I have a friend who has been helping me fire my wood kiln that has terminal cancer and he is in his early 30’s. He has found out that news since I’ve known him in the last year and a half. I’ve seen him cry and dread what is happening to him as well as consider all the other ways to die that may be easier than cancer. He is doing well with treatment but his attitude through this has inspired me and the joy he has found in clay and helping me in my studio is amazing. We all have hands we are dealt and we choose how to play them. We don’t choose the hand but we do choose what to do with it. And how we face them and our attitude toward them can change our own perspective and may help someone else in their situation. I have not faced too many horrible circumstances in my life aside from the death of loved ones and for that I am grateful! I’m also thankful that I learned that my attitude and actions are mine to control. I also have faith in God and have had for more than half of my life. That’s also my choice and not something I’m trying to preach to you about. But I have peace about my life here and after I die because of my faith and belief in Jesus as the son of God. I wish you the best in your circumstances and I hope that you find peace. And I sincerely hope you can find some positives to dwell on in the midst of your challenge
Thanks for this video. I hope to at some point make a sink for myself. I've been hand-building recently so I would have to practice once I got back on the wheel
Are you kidding me? That is amazing! I really love the tips you give as you are creating, and how you center for large pieces using smaller clay balls. I sometimes wonder if there's anything you can't do. :)
I take your point about "attitude" Matt, generally I am a positive person BUT what can I do when I have definite things happening pertaining to health? Only those who have/are suffering day after day after month after year will truly know about attitude towards something right? Anyway I enjoyed the video enormously. Getting that plug hole perfectly placed and a curve all the way n to that plug hole ceratinly can't be easy! *ADDITION" 09.10.2020: It's very easy to mention that `how we see things` can change the outcome of a situation! However, what's easy to say is not always easy to do is it? Humans generally can only take so much right? even with the best attitude in the world one can sink into the abyss. Getting out of the abyss can take a long time and in need of lots of help along the way. Anyway I just wanted to add this to my original comments. Thanks Matt.

I am have Emphysema, Achalasia and a dangerous aneurysm in my Aorta! trying to stay positive trough all this i no easy thing , good or bad attitude.
I understand. Yes we all face times when it’s not easy to stay positive. Sometimes we just have to keep going I spite of ourselves and our circumstances. I’ll be praying for your health and ability to stay positive. Thanks for the support and comments
Hi Mathew Given me a great idea as I’m about to renovate my bathroom Also can you please tell me about the really thin kiln shelves I’ve seen in your kiln. Advantages of these etc REGARDS RICHARD
Those are advancer kiln shelves. They are amazing but also amazingly expensive. They can handle very high heat without warping and the glaze comes off very easy if it ever drips on them. Well worth it if you have the $. Sorry for the delayed response.
Throw on a nice even bat that is not warped and make sure it dries evenly also. If the bowl is wobbling at all on the wheel it may still warp in drying because of the uneven throwing.
I like your video. But why did you turn the direction of your wheel? I' m afraid my English is not good enough. I know you said IT all in the video. Could you give me a written answer ( reading English was never a Problem vor me).
When I reverse the wheel I can use my right hand (my dominant hand) on the inside to hold the rib. Then I support it on the outside with my left hand. This way I can shape the bowl from the inside with the rib in my right hand. My latest video goes into more detail about this.
I came here to see some pottery thrown, but walked away with an attitude and perspective check, forcing me to look at the issues confronting me. Thanks, Matthew.
You’re very welcome! I didn’t plan to say any of that so I’m glad it helped. We ALL need a good attitude check sometimes. Thanks for watching and letting me know it encouraged you!
