Nice idea Mike and solution to getting all the shoot out of it. Those nylon wheels are quite good. I used one (gently) to remove the paint in the seams of the wings.
I cleaned up some light rust from the gears on the diff of this axle with them - impressed!
I had the same on my Salisbury Axle when I removed it for overhaul & re-painting. Rust along the inside top probably caused by condensation, cannot help bearings. My outer pinion bearing was probably worn due to the leaking pinion seal. According to receipts the PO had a new pinion seal fitted however the drive flange was badly grooved and it was probably leaking again by the time they drove it home. Unfortunately, not everyone is as thorough as you Mike.

Cleaning parts up is so satisfying. If i had my axle housing and diff torn apart i would have used this method to clean the tubes. A year or 2 back I replaced both front axleshaft u-joints on my 2004 jeep wrangler, and had to clean the tubes out of rust the best I could. I think used long prybars, screwdrivers, and a magnet. Don't want the axleshaft picking up any junk when you reinsert it and damaging the seal, or getting junk in the diff. I always soak the axle end in gear lube, and I use a prybar to help keep the shaft centered in the tube when inserting. You would think they could have painted inside the tubes when they were manufactured! Oh well.
I have seen many of these axle casings become rusty - You would have thought that being full of oil and the shafts spinning round that there would be a splash film of oil on the inside?
Also, the oil gets hot after a run and the insides can condensate when cooling, allowing rust to form
@@BritannicaRestorationsBeing in the USA, I am not very familiar with these rovers. Based on the axleshaft I guessed you were working on a rear axlehousing, but also noticed the offset diff, which I know is incommon for rears but some vehicles have. In the USA, all the trucks/suvs with solid axles I have seen have the front axleshaft seals in the diff, and the tubes run dry. The only thing doing anything to keep junk out of these tubes is usually a small ring/shield on the axleshaft, near the end of the tube. Some aftermarket jeep parts companies advertise seals that seal the ends of the tubes, but I have heard bad things about these. They can trap water in the tube, which could leak past axle seal into diff. And if you had an axle seal leak, you wouldn't see it with the sealed tubes. I know some of the front axle rover/toyota/suzuki stuff is different, but never tore those apart before.
@@BritannicaRestorationsIn setups with wet tubes, I have never seen junk/rust in the tubes. I think the reason you see that is you work on old stuff, stuff that may have been sitting for years, with high moisture/water in all the drivetrain, engine, trans, diffs, t-case and fluids. Just like an engine sitting for a long time can get cylinder pitting, I bet the same thing can happen eventually to an axle tube.

What would we do without brake cleaner. I now buy in boxes of 12 in Britainistan, still reasonably cheap over here. I did hear a rumour that Mr Trudeau was going to ban it as well as WD40 in an attempt to save the planet but it could have been put out by social media so not confirmed as yet.
The brake cleaner/WD40 story was to reduce the propellant, not the product as far as I know
@@BritannicaRestorations That means it will never spray as well as the original. Look what happened to paint spray cans when they changed from CFC's, funny the Chinese never stopped making it and if you check on the ozone hole, it is a lot bigger than it was in those days. It wouldn't be that the patent was running out for Du-Ponts R22 product would it? You couldn't make it up!
