My parents had GM Rochester QuadraJet carbs with 'auto choke' and never had a problem in any weather. Carbs with fuel enrichment circuits (choke?) , I found , don't work as well in cold weather - more cranking. Even my pumper carb started better in cold.

Morning Mike... Well. it is here. That thing is coming along nicely. Crank seal is a bugger though.

Same as mine Mike. It's the LT85. And yeah, if you don't want oil leaks then a Land Rover is not the car for you. Nice running RV8 that. I fear that my crank seal has also been a crank seal too long.

Oil leak out of 4bd1 turbo was the oil gallery plug at the back of the motor, all it needed is thread seal. I changed the rear main twice thinking it was leaking. My lt85 is not the split case like that one. My friends V8 County has the 4 speed is lt95,l like my 5 speed lt85 better for touring on Australian roads.

looks like the motor will have to come out so I will check the thread seal

Well the choke operations is like this it goes on by spring when the electric is of and the engine is cold due bimetallic spring the electric will make it turn of the choke and you have idle michure adjustment on both side of the metering block in front of the primary ports but its a bit big with a 600 better with a 390 to such a small engine you get no more power with the 600 but a more easily adjusted engine with a smaler carb it can feed it upp to 6000 and i dont think its recommend to rev it more.

    Mike good morning
Snake oil or not I've had some great results by using Forte Oil Seal conditioner on V8 engines in Range Rovers and SD1s ,very well worth a try ,and could potentially save you a whole load of work, and your customer a fair bit of dosh, whilst I'm here ,might be a good idea to check the inlet manifold/ valley gasket for air leaks,as at the moment with the exhaust leaking you may not be able to hear that well Cheers.

I used Liqui Molly 'oil saver' (which is also a seal conditioner) in my 80 series landcruiser because it was using oil.
Since the compression was perfect on all 6, I suspected that the valve stem seals had become hard over the last 26 years.
Seems I was right because oil consumption is down to 1 liter between zervices (10 000 km)
Also the front output flange on the transfer box was oozing so I put a small amount in the box. No more oozing.

350 Holley is max size that should be fitted to that engine. Anything bigger is just wasted money.

Couple obsevations. Carb fast idle is set too high . Should be about 1200rpm. Choke housing is adjustable (the heated element housing) should show Rich lean and arrows to indicate direction. Think it should be adjusted towards lean side and retested when cold.
