I watched this video with mix feelings. The men and women singing in joy had so much hope for this country at the time of independence. I wish they can see where we are today. I guess this was not the Ghana they hoped for at the time.

A great showcase of our history. Indeed Ghana is blessed to have visionary leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah. My worry is the agitation by a section of Ghanaians attempting to persuade the British to stay and withhold the Independence in which the majority of Ghanaians have yearned for. What a contrast! Such is the bane of Africa's state of development. Politics, by extension, multiparty democracy, is the means by which a lot of projects are discontinued by successive governments, rendering the country poor. We can't entirely fault our colonial masters. We are our own nightmares. In fact, the enemy within is *our attitude* The earlier we eschew backbiting in our politics, the better it will be for all of us. Long live Ghana 🇬🇭 ! May God bless our homeland Ghana and make her great and strong always.
I first watched this in '85, in the UK, at a time Ghana was struggling. In spite of all our problems now we have made real progress since this came out

Typical divide and rule. They "picked" 5 members of the big six for the so-called all black committee and left Nkrumah out, because they were the "moderates, " thereby sowing the seeds of discord between them and Nkrumah, leading to the split, the consequences of which Ghana continues to suffer till today. Fact is, Ghana, today, is a product of that split that happened among the UGCC leadership. Pathetic.

Wonderful documentary... Now let us take our time to analyse things carefully, devoid of ethnic sentiment and vendetta.
Nkrumah had a plan, he knew what he wanted and the direction. It was genuinely a good one and would've yielded positive results.. There is Unity in strength.
But I feel the independence struggle begun on a wrong foot. It was more like Nkrumah was forcing things on the neck on some of the people. Maybe they didn't really get the picture nkrumah was tryna paint.
We shouldn't forget the fact that, Africans have always had territorial States, we hadn't seen this new system before.... The more reason why the message must've sank to the people first, not just self government now mantra.. Many followed nkrumah for his charisma without actually understanding his plan.
I feel nkrumah should've gone down to listen to the views of the Asantes and northerners.. It didn't make sense to them as to why you will use their resources to develop a different place... Don't forget this was in the 50s and we had never seen anything like that before... They had a genuine case and some cultures to protect.
I now understand why JB Danquah drafted a constitution that was gonna involve all the traditional leaders in Gold coast then..
Moving forward, I still think the centralized power system is very bad. We must deceminate the powers...we have to sit down and draw a constitution that will inculcate everything, our culture, values, traditions and everything...we should stop the copycat attitude.... That is why we are struggling as a people

Why did the UGCC made up of the Danquahs, Ofori Atta's etc. brought in Nkrumah? And why did they fight against him in many instances?

@@prospersosu . You are right bro. And I think it was the selfish and greedy attitude of the UGCC that destroyed the whole Nkrumah”s plan. The UGCC wanted the British to continue ruling but through them cos the were the “elites”, probably we would have ended up like Zimbabwe where most the land is owned by the European community or perhaps South Africa and gone through periods of apartheid. When Tge people rallied behind Nkrumah cos of his charisma and we finally got Independent, the fight against him didn’t end there and that sabotaged most of his visions for the country and continent as a whole . The UGCC thought they had to be in power even though they didn’t actually have a clear cut plan for Ghana cos of heavy reliance on the colonial government ( imperialist). They overthrew Nkrumah and brought in Bush’s and that forever changed the course of history for the country and the years after was all periods of coups and distractions. I guess a one party state where we all belonged to one party as a country with a common plan would have helped. Now the NDC and NPP is the norm now , rubbing the country in 8 years interval. There’s no planning in the country . They both come rob us and move on . Both parties themselves don’t even have a party plan for the country such that regardless of who’s the flag bearer the plan of the party for the country remains , rather each flag bearer has its own ideas and smart ways of robbing the country. This years is china”s 14th five year plan for its country. They make five year plans and make sure they achieve everything in the plan in the space if the 5 years of which they set new five year plan upon completion. And should they not complete the plan in five years , they extend it for a space of one or two years , complete it and set a new five year development plan. Wake up guys ! NPP AND NDC have nothing to offer us

Power is centralized in Accra.
The regional minister is not elected by the people therefore he or she is not acceptable to the people of the region.
The regional minister is accountable to the president.
I talking about regional governors with proper powers to steer the affairs of the region and implement policies peculiar to that particular region.
Not the one size fit all approach that is normally taken by the president and the ministers are to implement it.
There is no sense in collecting taxes in Kumasi send it to Accra and when a school in Kumasi needs chalk now you have to write a letter to someone in Accra to make that chalk available.
The leaders of the regions should be given powers to operate on their own.
The tax should be split one for central government and one for the regional government.
The regional ministers should be elected people not people appointed by the president.
Our constitution needs review and amendment.

I have been viewing Ghana's and most of Africa's history through the lens of Americans like W.E.B. Dubois and Dr. John Henrik Clark, thus the greater part of my focus has been on heritage. Apart from South African Apartied, the continent as a whole, simply did not loom large in my imagination. Paying greater attention now does not make my ignorance any more palatable. The African Diaspora cannot mend, nor should it attempt to mend the centuries old tribal conflicts and subjugation which is deeply embedded in the African's consciousness and spirit. Does one willingly wade into the psyche that is Africa? Yet, when invited to assist, does one refuse? Does one model their behaviors after those Africans who have fled the continent and have vowed never to return or return in 5 or 10 years? What happens to fools who rush in? I am left with more questions then answers. This is necessarily a good thing. I will seek understanding, discernment and confirmation before acting and operating in a void. Kwame Nkrumah was a magnificent figure, but if the corruption allegations which sparked the inception of the NLM and the passionate appeal by the Northern Territories hold true, what did he (Nkrumah) do to address it? Or, dare I ask, was he complicit in it himself, being laissez-faire in those dealings? Or was he too lax in bringing the culpable state officials to book because of his personal relationship with them, while pulling the whip on reactionaries revolting because of corruption in the first place?

Look the west were not doing anything in our best interest but Britain had taken a humanitarian posture towards their colonies and tried to build a bigger empire by developing their colonies. That will serve their purpose anyways but it held some benefit for us.
Nkrumah radical approach made them think twice and possibly made them leave us with very little wealth which at that time was still a lot. Instead of developing Ghana with that little money, he went on an African campaign. Snd in 9 years rendered us in debt of 25 percent more than the capital he had been given.
From 200 million pounds to owing 250 million pounds.
He undid himself in a lot of ways.

Learnt a lot from this video. I have to say I'm saddened by the tribal divisions in the country pre-independence and the current state of affairs of the country. The British were generously understanding, yet we shoot ourselves in the leg after Independence. The country is in shambles now. Funny to hear the North didn't want to be a part of a black government but would rather be governed by the British in the name of protection and development, I mean I can't criticize them too much looking at the current state of affairs. There's still tribal conflicts within the country. Where do we go from here?
The reasons was that one tribe felt left out and up to date same exactly what we're witnessing in NPP government today.... Assuming Kwame Nkrumah brought all tribes together like by now Ghana is flying high....
Shambles is too strong a word. Tribalism has by and large been contained. It's the 2 party rule that seems to have not evolved. The members of each party see things through the lens of "we did this...you didn't do that".... I have learned from this video that we took the mantle of governance before independence, on a trial and error basis. It was learn as you go....Good thing Ghana didn't become 'federal' like Nigeria.

Nkrumah was a bit politically naive and he was in a hurry to do things. What he should have was to take his time. The picture looked good to him and he was under the impression of the civil rights movements. To have abandoned traditional rulers in this fight who had started the journey long before him was a mistake. That was one thing Rawlings did that kept him afloat.
