    Fun fact: at roughly the same time when the Indian trading port was established. King Gustav III was planning to establish a colony in Western Australia by the help of the Dutch-English explorer William Bolts.
    A contract had been signed and preparations went underway, but sadly it’s funding got delayed when war broke out between Sweden and Russia and eventually the plan were cancelled.

    According to Wiki, New Sweden was settled by 600 Swedes and Finns, a number of Dutchmen, a few Germans, a Dane, and at least one Estonian. Further investigation reveals that the half of the settlers were Finns. Hence the Delaware Finns and the southwest corner of the cape of Penns Neck, on the east bank of the Delaware River near its mouth on Delaware Bay, being called as Finns Point till today. There's also the Mullica River in southern New Jersey. Named after Eric (Erkki) Pålsson Mullica, an early Finnish settler to New Sweden. He and his family were the source of the name of several geographic features and places in New Jersey. Pålsson means 'Paul's Son' in Swedish. In Finnish 'Paavonpoika'. Eric's father was Pål (Paavo) Jönsson Mullica. The father of Pål (Paavo) was Juho Mullikka, who had earlier moved to Sweden from Finland. "Mullica" is a variation of the Finnish term 'mullikka', which means 'young bull'. Finns brought their carpentry skills and ways of working the land. The oldest log cabin still standing in its original location is in New Jersey due to those settlers. Also one of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence, John Morton, was a descendant of those settlers. A Finnish settler Martti Marttinen was his great grandfather. The surname Marttinen was changed to Morton.

    Ive heard that swedish-native relations were largely pleasant all things considered. Though some disgruntled forest finns fled the swedish colonies where they were treated as second class citizens to join up with the Ojibwe tribe. Where they still have some hybrid finnish-native American traits with Finnish surnames and a cultural love of saunas and the Finnish concept of sisu(stoic perseverance). Finndians are probably among the rarest ethnicities to exist.

The true underdog story of europe is really the story of Finland, sweden is the child born with silver spoon. btw roughly 2/5 of the infantry and 3/7 of the cavalry in the swedish army were from Finland.

Also sweden is mostly just forest and wilderness, like 70% today is just forest and it was mostly inhabitable because sweden doesnt really have rivers, we have streams with high currents and stuff but no real rivers that could be used for transport.

    • @alaric_
      @alaric_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      To clarify, by "developing" you mean either completely ignoring or converting Sami to christianity? Not forgetting to tax them of course.
      During the history, Sami never got any positive attention from any of the countries they have lived on: Norway, Sweden, Finland or Russia. The only question is "were they ignored as 'backwards' people, converted or tried to erase their culture to achieve an ouright cultural genocide?" The latter was what Russia did, the former choices are what the other nordic countries did.
      There is no need to sugar coat the thing, no nordic country did any favours for the Sami. It's a small miracle that so much is left of the Sami people and their culture, even in the nordics.

    Again I could be wrong but if that is true it shows how low supplies were for the colony.

    2:29 I think a more practical method of settlement for the colony would’ve been for the Swedish government to find a marginalized group within Swedish society (let’s say the Sámi) and tell these people “hey you can either stay in Sweden and surrender your culture to the dominant Swedish society around you or you can come to this cool little colony we’ve set up for you and preserve your culture in the process essentially building you’re own society for you and your children” this would have not only motivated people to settle the area it would’ve also motivated people to stay in the area and have children in the process keeping the colony alive for more than 5 seconds
