  • PLEASE CHECK OUT THE LATEST 2020 VERSION OF THIS VIDEO HERE: • Real Digital Watercolo...
    UPDATE 2020: I am no longer using these brushes but have a few favorites you can download for free from Adobe ~ Kyle T Webster Watercolor Brushes - my favorites are: Kyle's Real Watercolor Round Robin (creates wet edges - better than the one I use in this video), Kyle's Real Watercolor 500 Giant (great for soft watercolor backgrounds) and Kyle's Real Watercolor Soft Edger 1 for blending.
    Hi Guys! I'm back with a new video for you. This one was inspired by my recent exploration of the digital watercolor tutorials on TH-cam and I was immediately SO confused and overwhelmed by what people were trying to teach and to me all of them had lost the magic of REAL art!
    So if you haven't already given up hope on trying art in Photoshop check out my video. I make it easy to learn and it's perfect for traditional artists who typically work with pencil and paper or brush and canvas.
    You will need:
    Photoshop
    Drawing Skills (or not - drawing is like a muscle you have to use it to make it stronger - get started and you will only improve).
    Wacom Tablet (any kind) and digital pen (usually comes with the tablet)
    A watercolor brush - UPDATE 2020: I am no longer using these brushes but have a few favorites you can download from Adobe Kyle T Webster Watercolor Brushes - my favorites are: Kyle's Real Watercolor Round Robin, Kyle's Real Watercolor 500 Giant and Kyle's Real Watercolor Soft Edger 1 for blending.
    I hope you enjoy - please let me know if you have any questions. Subscribe to my channel for future videos and please share my video - Cheers!
    ~ Jess ;-)

    My smudge tool wasn't working as well as yours, so I realized "Finger painting" wasn't selected. That changed everything.
    I'm saying it in case someone's going thru the same.

    Gosh this was so helpful. I’m trying to make an illustration in a watercolor style (I usually do highly-rendered digital) and oh my *god* I didn’t realize I needed to be told “just put colors down, don’t worry about being clean and have fun with it”. Thanks *so* much

    I tell you, even if i'm a noob, I think it's better having as many layers as you can. In this way your draw would be easier to edit. A long time a go I did a drawing where I created a layer for every single line of the lineart i was making. This allowed me to change some lines of it at the end of the work easier and faster than when you have all in one layer, and then i could switch between them to see which one was better

    • @JessBircham
      @JessBircham  6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I agree sometimes it is good to have lots of layers for certain types of art. I do this for fabric art for example when I want to replicate one element over and over and move them around easily. The disadvantage to many layers is the more layers you add the larger your file size will be. You also have to be very disciplined and label each layer so you don't spend half your time searching for a certain line or element. But if it works for you then that's great - we all have to find what works best for us.

    I've always been on the traditional side of art, especially watercolor illustrations. But I just bought a pen tablet and the whole digital art world felt so intimidating, the tools, brushes, settings etc! But this is the most sincere and humane digital art tutorial I've seen so far haha. Your voice is so comforting and loved it when you said like "Be messy, be free, and do it like how you would do it, not like how computers would do it". The whole thing seems more familiar already, thank you :)

    Actually, digital art is a different form of art. As a graphic design major I’ve realized it’s not all about drawing and painting, it’s about how you can create and design, whether it be logo design, business cards, menus, web designs, etc. It still takes an extremely creative mind to be a graphic designer. If you’re an artist, you should know this.

    • @JessBircham

      I do a lot of graphic design myself - I'm not knocking graphic designers - art is a fluid concept. This video is meant to help those who want to do traditional art but on a digital platform.

    Bless your heart, this video is super easy and straightforward, and all I needed was a new brush and some guidance. I used to dread having to color b/c as good as I am at drawing, I can't color at all digitally, so now I'm learning to do it. I love the watercolor effect and although all of the other watercolor videos on YT look nice, the effects don't look genuine at all; or if they did, you still had to buy brushes and all sorts of complicated tools and actions :(

    Effective simple technique. I, being the dreaded _graphical designer_ i am, improved the end result by duplicating the color layer, applying find edges and a few pixels of blur and multiplying that on top of the color layer. Makes more convincing dried outlines to the "watercolor strokes". With that addition and a bit of touch up i am quite happy with the effect.

    Everyone always takes things so negatively! I am a graphic and web designer who loves to paint and produce digital artworks for our clients if needed, and I found no offense in what you said. It wasn't: "Be a real artist", it was, "Think like a fine artist,". Paints and applications are so much different than digital, she's just trying to get the feel of the most realistic composition. Which people pay loads for! The more realistic the watercolor, the better the quality. And in the digital world, it's all about thinking like a fine artist would. Love this video, thank you!

      Chiaotzu that's my point.. I was being sarcastic. It seems that the creator of this video thinks that graphic designers are not artists. Little did she know, graphic designers study art and practice it as much, or even more than fine art artists or whatever she calls artists.

    • @JessBircham
      @JessBircham  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Actually I NEVER once said Graphic Designers were not real artists. I said the videos you find on TH-cam with the computer effects do not feel like real art. I am trying to bridge the gap between traditional art and digital art. People who have been drawing and painting their whole lives very often have a hard time translating that to digital media. If you are going to post negative comments on my videos I will remove them as this was intended to be for people wanting to learn something not for hateful remarks. I am completely self taught on all of the Adobe software and others as well as being a traditional fine artist so you don't have to preach to me about the hours it takes to learn this stuff - because you're looking at it.

    I really enjoyed this tutorial. I'm a graphic designer and I majored in illustration in University, but first I'm an artist. I tend to approach my design work by hand. My problem is that I want to use the computer more, but with the skills I have as an artist and designer, not as a Photoshop expert. However, I need to be an expert in PS to be able to create the artwork I see in my head. It's confusing. The first thing I wanted to learn was how to paint watercolour in PS and Illustrator. This was a good first step for me, I found it really helpful. I too like to do my line drawings by hand and scan them in, and you also showed a great way of deleting the background I didn't know about either. So THANK YOU, sorry for taking up so much space and rambling and I love your accent, it adds that extra touch to the video.

You are the best!!! :) If you don't mind, I have one question. What kind of brush do use for the watercolor effect? Is the brush you used in the video is basically set in the Photoshop? I tried to use the brush in a photoshop that seems what you used in the video, but it doesn't look same. The brush I used has tips very splited out like messy. But yours doen't look like that. Hi Jessica - are you using Photoshop CC? Sounds like you might just be in the wrong area. When you have brush tool selected go to the top left corner of the grey bar - it says Mode: click the drop down menu and you should be able to see a big list of options - multiply is one of them. Make sure you're in "Painting" set up - you can choose that in the top right corner of Photoshop on the grey bar. Hope that helps!

      Hi Jo - you can definitely use the normal brushes Photoshop has to offer - in fact when I create my hyper realistic art I only use the hard round and soft round to create that art and it comes out great! The key is detail and attention to color. Good luck!

    It looks good but I can't really use the downloaded brush cause it lags horribly. It is of course my PC but other brushes don't lag :(

      No it's not your computer - that brush suddenly started having issues. Check out my latest video - there are loads of even better watercolor brushes free with Adobe CC now - Kyle T Webster's Watercolor brushes :-)

    Brilliant video thanks! How do you make the smudge tool work so well? what settings do you use? mine just looks messy whereas yours on the edges of each colour looks diluted and more natural.

    This is a beautiful and perfect video thank you so much I have a question if I wanted to take the background out and just have the image of the fox cut outs how would I do that

    • @JessBircham
      @JessBircham  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! If you want the fox on it's own with a blank background you could lasso around the fox and put it on a separate layer. The background layer could be set to transparent, if you wanted it to be actually blank. You may have to clean up around the fox a little with the eraser tool. Hope that helps

    • @JessBircham
      @JessBircham  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm that is strange - not heard that before. Did you download the set of brushes - as there are 8 or 9 different brushes to choose from and you can try them all and see which one you prefer. I will have a tutorial soon on how to make your own brushes too :-)

  • @emilywest4886

    I'm fairly new at this and am attempting to download the paintbrush linked in your description. Is there anything specific I need to do to get it to upload into photoshop?
    (P.S. I have spent years looking at different digital art tutorials and yours has been, by far, the most valuable!)

    • @JessBircham
      @JessBircham  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's awesome Emily thank you for your kind words. You just need to download them and then upload them to Photoshop by going to Brush Presets (top right icon by the brush presets box> Load Brushes and then find where you downloaded them and they should show up in your brushes. Hope this helps!

    This tutorial was absolutely awesome, thank you! I have a quick question - my blend/smudge tool doesn't have the same effect yours done. Instead of blending, it seems to just smear the top color across the page. Any tips? Thank you!

    • @JessBircham
      @JessBircham  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi - thanks for the lovely comment! Every computer is different and has different settings. So my suggestion when this happens is to play around with the brush type and strength of the blending tool until you find something you like. It can take a bit of time to really find the ideal blending tool. If you can download NKS5 - that is my favorite blending tool - however some people have trouble downloading it. Hope that helps!

      I know its been a long time but I think I found the solution: try to increase spacing and scatter in smudge brush settings. it worked fine for me :)

  • @cloudymatchalarge
    @cloudymatchalarge 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    hello! to achieve this effect do i need my system unit to have a higher RAM? because it worked with me but the brush is responding slowly and it doesn't paint along with the brush :(((

    • @JessBircham
      @JessBircham  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope - for some reason that brush has been lagging for me too - I'm not sure why but I need to remake it or upload it again - sorry! My other watercolor brushes don't lag though and you can use this technique with any brush!
