I've just started out using photoshop for illustration after years of traditional media this is the first tutorial that has made any sense to me. Great content and presentation style. For the first time in two months the work flow makes sense. Big thanks from me!
Thank you so much for sharing your technique. I also found the original version of this video quite helpful since I wanted to learn how to add a watercolor texture to the painting. (I work in Affinity Photo, but it's similar enough to be able to translate.) The "multiply" setting was one I was ignorant of. Your characters are really cute!
Thank you so much, this was a very helpful tutorial on the brushes and your coloring techniques! It’s so nice to see talented people sharing their tips and tricks. For a beginner in visual art such as myself, this means a lot!
Oh my word, I have watched hundreds of vids, yours is the first that actually shows how to paint watercolor with tablet. I have always wanted to do more of this and recently a client asked if I could as they were tired of looking for stock images they liked with watercolor simple scenes. I better go dig out my pencils and start sketching too now. TY
It's 2022 and I have just watched and commented oh the 2017 video. I saw the link to this one and have just watched it as well. Many thanks Jess for another easy to follow tutorial.
Thank you for this! Most useful video I've found tonight, after searching through a number of them here on TH-cam. I'll tell you one thing that took me an hour or two to figure out: how to use the brush and tablet so that I wasn't getting streaky lines. As you well know, by painting in a circular motion and keeping my pen on the tablet rather than doing multiple strokes.
Thank you so much! I'm a traditional artist that is still learning how to use digital art. I love using gouache and watercolours and wanted to try creating the same effect in my digital art, but could only find how to transform a photo to a watercolour effect. Your tutorial was just what I needed.
I am kind of new to Photoshop and have been watching several tutorials. So far yours is one of the best ones. That is such amazing work. My crappy illustrations look amazing just by doing this. Thanks, really, you are really good at this.
Aww thank you - that's such a lovely thing to say! And I am sure your illustrations are not crappy! The more you play with this the better and easier it becomes. Have fun!
My god: you just made my life so much easier. I have a lot of watercolor things I need to work on and I only knew of one brush, and my method before was rubbish. Thanks!
Jess Bircham yeah! Subscribed and checking out some of your other videos! I’m surprised you don’t have more views: have you ever considered branching out to other things besides tutorials?
Great videos. I’ve been tinkering with the other “Ps generated” methods of water colouring with mixed degrees of satisfaction. I’ve spent HOURS tweaking custom brushes - with mixed degrees of satisfaction. I REALLY like you approach and I’m very keen to get trying a more authentic artistic approach to creating watercolour digital art. Also, I’ve just downloaded Kyles brushes 👍🤣
Excellent explanation- I have been working professionally on photoshop for many years as an artist and fabric designer- this simple explanation is brilliant:)
Thank you so much!! That was exactly what i was looking for!! Most videos of tutorials i always get the feeling of dread by the end of it. Yours, though, it made me motivated to try it myself, which is just, so rare for me!! Thanks again!! And also, sorry if english was off, it's not my first language.
Since I cant get Kyle's brushes what other free water color brush do you like? I have a little older photoshop and can only get Kyle's if I'm a paid subscriber in CC. Thanks so much I loved how you original color but using a computer as thats what I want to do. Not use all fancy computer to color for me.
I'd love to learn more about how to color the drawings (via digital watercolor) as I'm a beginner and blending and I are not getting along very well haha
Was going to comment on the older video of yours, but figured that you would see this quicker. I started out drawing when I was younger, and now am a graphic designer by trade. I know several artists who are the same way or similar. I pull illustration into my designs when it makes sense for the concept, but I am never a fan of all the tricks and such as well. I guess all this to say, from a graphic designer, thank you for making these tutorials so I can learn more how to keep the natural process there when creating art. I believe graphic design is a form of art, but know that some designers get a bad rap when it comes to traditional techniques because some are not trained that way or have ever put time into learning it. I think the most well-rounded designers can do both of course, so I'm always looking to grow. Have you ever tried Adobe fresco? I have not much yet but in some ways it looks promising and will get better with time! Also curious to try this for photoshop on the iPad!
Hi Matt - thanks so much for your comment! I really like to use a mixture of traditional art and digital but I love how Photoshop and the other Adobe products can help us stretch our artistic abilities. I do a lot of graphic design type work too so I see it from both sides but my heart is with my traditional art. Good luck with your work and thanks for reaching out :-)
Love these tutorials and have followed them to do this style of painting for a project I am doing. One question. If I do the rtists surface overlay as you show why isn't the texture showing like in yours? I am following it closely but not sure if I am missing something being clicked on? I am using an older version of Photoshop CS 6. But I imagine when you did your first one it was a similar version? ANy help is appreciated. Does the painting layer need to be inside the group with the filter? I might have missed it on your original video. Thanks
This is so generous of you to share this video of your process. I love the look. I have a new iMac, the big one. I have always wanted to try digital watercolor painting. Are Kyle's brushes royalty free, inotherwords, can I see my art using the downloaded brushes? Now, I feel I will really get my money's worth from this purchase. I do have a question: to make things easier, I should get a Wacom. Have you ever tried your technique with an iPad Pro? Although, Photoshop is not offered on the Pro yet, but using Procreate? I was thinking of a lesser expensive way to achieve the same look by using Procreate with an iPad Pro. Thank you.
I would HIGHLY recommend you get a Wacom tablet - if you've got a new iMac your 70% of the way there already. You can get a refurbished one on the apple website for less and they work just as well (in my experience). As far as an iPad Pro and Procreate goes - it's on my list of MUST HAVE'S! I would absolutely love to get one and try out Procreate - I've seen some incredible art created using an iPad and Procreate.
@@JessBircham Thank you. Can you tell me how to make my color layer to look more vibrant. I am using multiply for the brush and set on normal in the layers panel. Am I doing something wrong? When scanning the work into PS should I have a white background? I scanned in the sketch with no transparency, is that the problem? Thanks, again. BTW, I love working with an iPad. I don't have a Pro but am debating on getting one and a Wacom. I understand the iPad Pro works well as a tablet drawing pad when connected to the iMac. I may go that route because there is so much you can do with the Pro.
Hi Jess. Are you able to let us know the specific brushes you like besides the Robin brush? Love to know as there are so many options. But I really love your approach the result. Yourtuorials have saved me a heap of time developing a process for illustrations I need to watercolour!
A very detailed video. Thank you. Maybe next time, a drawing with more colors for tutorial? It is watercolor, after all. It may help you get more clicks. A great video.
Thank you! This is perfect. Is there a trick you use to keep your colors consistent between pages when illustrating the same character? I am a painter and am new to digital illustration.
I notice you have your airbrush tool on as well and switched on? Is there a reason for this? I have faked watercolour before with the airbrush tool but it looked too smooth...
can I ask was your issue downloading the brushes because of the vs of PS you are using? if so what vs are you using and how did you manage to download.. I only ask I am using CS6 and can't download either. Jess assures me using PS basic brushes will be fine but isn't it tempting to use what is in the demo? lol
can i ask something...? if i release mouse button and redraw, the watercolor brush overlabs... i draw each tones at one go.. i am very difficult to draw under color... how can i draw with the water brush not overlab, i want to connect the color i painted before release mouse button...
Great question! So if you don't want to overlap your color make sure the brush is set to "Normal" (top left menu) - however if you are using a watercolor brush that brush may already have a built in opacity to it in which case you can't help but overlay color every time you release the mouse. The only answer to that is to hold the button down until you're done coloring or use a different brush. Hope that helps!

Hi Kristina! Thanks for your kind words. HELLO CAN YOU PLEASE ADD THE LINK FOR BRUSHES PLEASE PLEASE
Just click on add more brushes in the brushes menu in Photoshop and it will take you straight to where you can download them on Adobe.com
Can I use Ai instead?
